When the real world is an utter disappointment, some choose to find respite in fantasy. Movies, books, comic books, video games and tabletop games can be a joyous relief, surrounded by strange, smart and fun fan communities.

One does not simply quench the thirst for geeky weirdness in one sitting. Sure, Phoenix Comicon is bringing 70,000 odd ones to Phoenix this weekend, but what about the rest of the year? Fear not. The Valley is home to a few nerdy sanctuaries.

There are places that serve alcohol, because sometimes it’s fun to drink a little while playing on a 25-year-old Sega Genesis or to indulge in a pinot grigio while listening to someone talk about the plausibility of time travel.

Others are family-friendly spots where you can sip an espresso while perusing comic books, or learn to play tabletop games for free among geeky brethren.

Go forth and find your haven.

East Valley Endgame Wander up the escalators and into a spacious bar on the second floor of a popular Mill Avenue building. Find out that it’s free to play all video games on every major console known to America and a few arcade games, and you can do it while drinking alcohol. Squeal with joy.

This is a common occurrence since Ryan Scott opened Mill Avenue’s first video game-centric bar and restaurant last October. It already regularly draws 300 to 400 people every weekend, he said, especially when they host tournaments (doubly so if it’s Super Smash Bros.). It’s all ages until 10 p.m. and they’re open until 3 a.m. on weekends, making the spot a gathering place for any beer-loving gamer. They host Geeks Who Drink trivia every Thursday at 7:30 p.m.

Comicon alert: They’re hosting two after parties: the Rapture Masquerade Ball tonight and a science-themed rave on Saturday. Both are 21 and up, and entry is free with a Phoenix Comicon badge.

Cult Classics Arizona Every month or so, a group of film geeks descend on Pollack Tempe Cinemas. They watch cult classics, create and buy illustrations of the movie and show off their best retro T-shirts. Each screening draws 200 to 300 people and many sell out, event director Victor Moreno says. Past screenings include “Poltergeist,” “Pulp Fiction” and “Army of Darkness.”

Comicon alert: The organizers are on two panels at Comicon, one about how to get involved in Arizona’s geek community and another on “Horror Film Heroes.”

They’ll also have a booth at the expo to sell art prints, T-shirts and tickets to their next screening, “Jaws.”

Pop Culture Paradise Comics and Games The Tempe location of this comicbook, figurine and game store is basically on Arizona State University’s campus, and draws mostly young people looking to get down with some Pokemon, Yu-GiOh! or Magic: The Gathering; ladies play Magic for free on Saturday nights. Nearly half the store is gaming tables, and they host various gameplay events every day. Less-serious gamers can go to a free board-game night on Tuesdays at 7 p.m., or peruse the new comics every Wednesday.

Gotham City Comics and Coffee Coffee is the perfect excuse to drop into a comic store if you have no clue about comics. It’s one of the reasons this shop is known for its sense of community, as well as their participation in downtown Mesa’s 2nd Friday Night Out and other events. They have in-store events almost every day, including “Doctor Whosday” on Tuesday, when people watch “Doctor Who” and do showthemed trivia, and a class on yo-yoing every Saturday from 1 to 3 p.m.

Howie’s Game Shack Howie’s bills itself as “the largest online interactive game centers in North America,” and the Mesa location is the biggest in the Valley, store manager Joseph McDaniel says. They house more than 150 PCs and 50 Xbox One stations, and get a full house of about 250 people every weekend, he said. Attendees are mostly teens and college-age gamers, but they regularly see families with young children and gamers up to 60 years old, he said. It’s easy to imagine that a Call of Duty tournament can draw just about anyone.

Adults’ Night Out Science fanatics 18 and older take over the Arizona Science Center every month to explore the center’s four levels without kids getting in the way. Plus, there’s a DJ and a cash bar. The theme changes each month, and one last year drew more than 8,000 people. Most exhibits are free, including lectures and Arts 360 displays in the Dorrance Planetarium.

Nerd Nite Roughly every month, a group of knowledge lovers meet at a roaming location to drink while listening to 18- to 21minute presentations on various intellectual topics. Nerd Nite exists in 80 cities around the world, according to its website, and the Phoenix night has frequented Mod, Carly’s Bistro and the Phoenix Art Museum.

Attendance runs between 50 and 150 people, but can dip as low as five — Phoenix Nerd Nite founder Ty Fishkind said they don’t care much about promotion.

It’s all about the learning. The nights are on hiatus for summer but will start back up in September.

All About Books and Comics This shop has been open for more than three decades and they have the fan base to prove it — more than 1,000 people attended their Free Comic Book Day this year, co-owner Marsha Giroux says.

They host occasional events, like in December they will have a Jedi-training session with Darth Vader to celebrate the new “Star Wars” movie. They’re moving to a new location just around the corner at the end of June.

Comicon alert: They will have a booth at the convention where they’ll hand out coupons for 20 percent off at the shop that weekend only.

Land of sun and summer showers, Land of grain and gold and flowers, In Columbia's diadem Of jewels rare thou'lt be the gem, Hail to Arizona, the sun-kissed land!

You say these words are not familiar, even though the Territorial Legislature adopted them as Arizonaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s first official song in 1901?

In his 1919 book, â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Story of Arizona,â&#x20AC;? Will Henry Robinson wrote, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Arizona has its own official flower, anthem and flag. Its flower is the white wax-like blossom of the Suhuaro (the Cereus giganteus) which puts forth its petals in June. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s anthem, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Hail to Arizona! The Sun-kissed Land,â&#x20AC;? was written by Mrs. Frank Cox and Mrs. Elise R. Averill.â&#x20AC;?

Most interesting is this long-forgotten paean has a direct connection to Tempe. You see, Averill, who penned the words, was an English and physical culture teacher at the Normal School of Arizona (now ASU).

Just to keep things in the family, Averillâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s sister, Mrs. Frank Cox of Phoenix, composed the music.

Arizonaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s first official song debuted at a daylong celebration of the opening of the new Capitol building on Feb. 25, 1901.

And 19 days later, the Territorial Legislative Assembly passed Act No. 49 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; â&#x20AC;&#x153;To Adopt a Territorial Anthem.â&#x20AC;?

Additionally, the act mandated School District Trustees, â&#x20AC;&#x153;â&#x20AC;Śdistribute copies of the song to all school children in their districts to be learned and used as part of their musical curriculum.â&#x20AC;?

A newspaper article the following day described the momentous debut. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Hail to Arizona, The Sun-Kissed Land,â&#x20AC;? by Mrs. Frank Cox, the rendition of which thrilled all who could crowd into the hall with all the patriotism a pa-

Mrs. Cox received a profusion of bouquets and was showered with violets, responding to an encore by repeating the last verse of the song. She sang with unusual feeling, in a manner soft and lento on the verses, and animated and lively on the chorus in which Arizonians are invited to hail to Arizona.â&#x20AC;?

Invited by special request to come up from of Tucson, Miss Lyzabeth Y. Allen accompanied Mrs. Cox on the piano.

Born in Texas in 1864, Averill arrived in Arizona about 1890 after a two-year stint as Oceanside, Californiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s first schoolteacher. She died in San Diego in 1968 at age 104.

Sadly, the long-overlooked â&#x20AC;&#x153;Hail to Arizonaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;sâ&#x20AC;? crown was unceremoniously deposed in 1919 by the Fourth State Legislature, which declared â&#x20AC;&#x153;Arizona,â&#x20AC;? a new song composed in 1915 by Margaret Rowe Clifford, as â&#x20AC;&#x153;Arizonaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s State Anthem.â&#x20AC;?

A closer look at Arizona’s ‘most challenging’ schools So here’s some good news about Arizona education: We have the most challenging school in America. In fact, we have three of the top 10 most challenging schools.

And we have the second-best school in America.

Even more interesting, those schools are all charters, all from one group: Basis. The Washington Post named Basis Oro Valley the most challenging school in America. And U.S. News and World Report named Basis Scottsdale the second-best school in America.

Now you might ask: How were these schools ranked? Interesting answer: based on Advanced Placement scores.

AP tests are grueling, three-hour, endof-course tests that award college credit if kids score a 3 or better (out of 5) on most of the tests.

And, on those tests, Basis kids are outstanding. Amazing results. Terrific schools, no doubt.

But we need a little context here.

First, you need to know that Basis

schools require their students to take AP tests, and most of the high-school courses for kids are AP. So it’s clear they are challenging.

So challenging that Basis loses kids.

Basis schools have pretty large attrition rates. And very small numbers.

Take that Oro Valley school, the one named most challenging in the country.

In 2010, according to the Arizona Department of Education, it had 40 freshmen. By the time those kids were seniors, 15 had left, a 37 percent loss of kids.

And according to the state report on graduation, none of those kids was economically disadvantaged or limited in any way by language. Kids with lesser abilities choose to go elsewhere as they matriculate, leaving Basis with only their best students. So when the Post and U.S. News rank that school, their base for it is 25 kids. The most challenging school in America is awarded based on how many tests those 25 take.

So we take small schools, with dwindling enrollment and claim these are model schools. Really?

Don’t get me wrong: Basis schools are

great for some kids. But they are hardly the “new model for education” that its chairman, Craig Barrett, claims.

There’s a second “but,” too. The one about district schools, where kids can get the same rigorous education Basis kids do.

The same AP courses with often the same AP results are available in a comprehensive high school that offers so much more than Basis does, not the least of which is mixing with all kinds of kids.

Let’s take the state’s largest district, Mesa Public Schools. Their seniors in 2014 earned $83,641,496 in scholarships, with anywhere from 28 percent to 41percent of seniors earning some sort of scholarship, depending on the school.

And on AP tests? The district had 235 AP Scholars, kids who passed three or more exams. Mountain View had 556 kids take almost 1,000 exams. Almost 3,000 MPS students took over 4,000 AP tests last year, 60 percent of them with a 3 or better, which is on par with the national average of 60 percent passing, and higher than Arizona’s 56 percent pass rate. Basis has even better pass rates,

with last year’s classes passing at an astounding 82 percent. Impressive. But again, it’s a small number — so small that all of the Basis kids in Arizona taking the test don’t equal the total taking them in Mesa.

And Mesa kids, like all district students, succeed in comprehensive high schools that feature a strong diversity of students and provide offerings that small schools like Basis simply can’t.

So what can we say, then? First, that no one should denigrate the great results Basis students produce year after year.

But those same kids could face similar challenges in any high quality, comprehensive district high school in our state, have the same success in those schools, earn the same scholarships, and go on to the same prestigious universities.

Let’s celebrate Basis. But let’s also celebrate the many district schools that succeed with more diverse and challenging student bodies.
