It’s a business incubator. It’s a tech hub. It’s a knitting school. It’s a freespeech zone. It’s a homelessness help center on wheels.

It’s a ... library?

Yes, indeed.

Thanks in part to grants administered by the Arizona Secretary of State’s Office, local libraries are developing an increasingly wide range of identities.

Grants fund more than books The federal Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) distributes funds from the national Institute of Museum and Library Services to states, which use the money to support special projects in local libraries.

In Arizona, the LSTA grants are managed by the Arizona State Library, which is overseen by Secretary of State Michele Reagan.

In 2017, Reagan’s office distributed $800,000 in LSTA funds to 56 programs across the state. The grants ranged in size from $2,500 for “Programming in a Box” at Prescott Valley’s library to $57,800 for a “Grow and Play” space at the Pima County Public Library.

This year’s grant applications will be accepted until March 9, with funds awarded as soon as May 1.

Grants are awarded to the programs that are most likely to provide lasting beneÿts, and to address needs speciÿc to local communities, Reagan explained.

“We look for unique projects,” she said, “especially something that’s unique to the area and needed locally.”

Because the grants are separate from libraries’ regular operating budgets, they provide a chance to expand beyond traditional services.

“Libraries are really going through a transformation across the entire country, as well as in Arizona,” Reagan said.

“They’re not just for books. Libraries are the places to go to ÿnd the technology or the classes or to ÿll whatever gap there is in a community.”

used the funds to meet surprisingly varied needs.

Avondale Public Library used a 2015 LSTA grant to encourage outdoor exercise with basketballs, trekking poles and other recreational gear that patrons can check out like books. Phoenix libraries used LSTA funds for robotics labs; Maricopa Public Library purchased virtual reality headsets; and Buckeye Public Library opened a mobile computing lab that provides laptops and computer classes to all ages.

Other LSTA grants have broadened libraries’ literary o‘ erings, such as Mesa’s Writer-in-Residence program, in which professional authors coach local writers.

And several libraries have used the money to equip “Makerspaces“ with

supplies and classes to empower patrons to do everything from sewing clothes to carving wood. Some, like Scottsdale Public Library’s Senior Makerspace, are designed to help older adults maintain cognitive and social skills, while others are open to anyone who wants to make things.

Makerspaces In Peoria, a group of creative residents made their own Makerspace.

Librarian Jennifer Crowell was working in her lower-level office at Peoria Public Library one Sunday in 2016 when a rambunctious group of knitters came down the stairs. They’d been meeting in the main level of the library, until another librarian suggested that their rowdy

get-togethers — while welcome — might be better suited for the activity room.

As she got to know the knitters, Crowell learned that they possessed other not-just-for-grandmothers skills, including crochet, quilting and embroidery.

Other library patrons started dropping by, asking for lessons or for help mending family heirlooms. Crowell was so impressed with the knitters’ willingness to share their talents that she proposed formalizing their Sunday library time with classes and group projects.

They agreed, and she wrote a 2017 grant requesting funds to purchase ÿve sewing machines, an embroidery machine, a serger, as well as scissors, a cutting taSee LIBRARIES, Page 4A

The Peoria Makerspace quickly became so popular that the library added a Wednesday sewing session with free kits that allow beginning crafters to complete a small project.

As the program expanded, the origi-

nal spirit of generosity has persisted.

Makerspace participants frequently devote sessions to knitting things like breast prostheses to donate to women who have undergone mastectomies, or caps to give to newborns at area hospitals. Others sew dog beds for animal shelters or make stu“ ed animals for the library’s storytime events.

The Glendale Public Library also found a way to enhance city services, by collaborating with the city’s economicdevelopment department to establish an Innovation Development and Entrepreneurial Assistance (IDEA) Center.

The IDEA Center, which was awarded a 2017 LSTA grant to buy furniture and equipment, aims to be a “one-stopshop” for people looking to start a business or ÿnd a job, according to librarian Michael Schor.

“It’s a gathering place and hub for anyone who has an idea that they want to grow into a business or career,” Schor said.

Conference tables provide space for networking and consultations; databases allow small business owners to do market research; and two of Glendale’s economic-development managers keep office hours at the center so they’re accessible to anyone with questions about starting or expanding a business in the city.

Job seekers come in for skills classes, free advice from a career coach, and to use the center’s computers to search for jobs, write and print resumes and ÿll out applications.

Inventors and hobbyists use the center’s 3-D printer and scanner to create and revise their prototypes — or, occasionally, to accessorize a Comicon costume.

And the center hosts classes on such issues as trademark law and 3-D programming, as well as quarterly sessions of the ASU Start-up series, in which attendees learn how to write a business plan and market products during a sixweek course in entrepreneurship.

To round out the one-stop-shopping, the library is installing an audiovideo production space with a green screen and enough digital recording and editing equipment to let people create podcasts, commercials or social-media promotions. Use of the room will be free, Schor said, as are all of the Glendale IDEA Center services, except for a small supply charge for the 3-D printer.

“The city of Glendale is really focused on helping small businesses,” Schor said, “so this is a natural ÿt. It’s a great way to serve our community.”

Dr. Cate McNamara, who is on the library faculty at South Mountain Community College, which co-operates the South Mountain Community Library in partnership with the city of Phoenix, also sees libraries as an inclusive space.

During the 2016 election, McNamara became concerned about the lack of opportunity for polite civil discourse and decided to address that absence by installing a whiteboard — nicknamed “Democracy Wall” — in the library. By asking simple, open-ended questions, then photographing and recording the answers, she hoped to give people a place to share their thoughts about issues ranging from library services to ballot initiatives.

“We want people to be able to express their voice and know that it will be heard in an equal setting with everyone else,” McNamara said. “And you might never know the full impact of your words. Maybe somebody else sees what you wrote, and that gives them an idea, or just another way to think about something.”

The low-tech project was so popular with library users — even small children got involved by dictating answers for their parents to write — that 11 other Phoenix libraries agreed to join it, leading to a 2017 grant to purchase more boards, markers and signs. In addition to coordinating questions across the branches, the library started collaborating with other city departments to get street-level input into city policies and services.

A recent question: “What could the city do to encourage you to ride your bike more?” was suggested by Phoenix’s bicycle coordinator, who was able to incorporate some of the best responses into a proposal for transit improvements.

Another question: “What is one thing you’d like to tell Mayor Stanton?” prompted McNamara to send photos of the boards directly to the mayor’s office.

“We’re giving the data to the folks who can use the data. That always feels good,” she said. “Plus, this is a great

Taking it to the streets With libraries providing so many services, it was probably inevitable that some would spill outside the walls.

Tempe Public Library’s Outreach and Marketing supervisor Nick Escalante was searching for a way to reach more people, especially those who are most underserved, like the city’s veterans and homeless residents. He thought about a Bookmobile. But he wanted something less expensive and more versatile. Something like a Book Bike.

With a 2017 LSTA grant, Escalante purchased a customized Icicle Bicycle — originally designed for selling ice cream — and hired Sean King, Tempe’s ÿrst Book Bike ambassador, who hit the streets in October, bringing books to the city’s parks, senior centers, schools and farmers market. He rides down Mill Avenue and along the Tempe waterfront, o“ ering reading materials to all.

library,” Escalante said. “So not only do you not have to get to the library, but you don’t need a library card for the Book Bike. If you don’t have an ID, you can still check out a book.”

King, who is a veteran himself, stocks the bike with up to 150 titles at a time — including a mix of mysteries, Westerns, biographies and children’s books — and rides three days a week, lending books with no more collateral than a name on an index card.

“At ÿrst people didn’t know what it was all about,” King said, “but it’s starting to build as people learn more about it. I’ve got some regulars now and they request certain genres.”

The books are all donated, and Escalante and King know that not all of them will be returned, but the books are, in some ways, only the hook. Although the conversation might start with James Patterson, King keeps chatting to ask what else his patrons might need. When he meets homeless residents, he gives them cards that list phone numbers and addresses for showers, food pantries, mental-health counseling and housing and employment assistance. When he

“It’s simple but it’s huge,” said Escalante. “Because a lot of times people don’t know they have these resources available to them. And if they don’t know a program is happening, how are they going to be able to use it?”

Much-needed funds While Makerspaces and the Book Bike used LSTA grants to purchase equipment that can keep going indeÿnitely, other projects are more ephemeral, like technology upgrades, data-collection projects and artist residencies.

Regardless of the di“ erences be-

tween the projects, librarians noted two key commonalities: each one ÿlls a need in their communities, and few would happen without the LSTA funds.

“We wouldn’t be able to do these programs without these grants,” Schor said. “We really need these grants to get us over to the next level of serving our community.”

With the 2018 grant deadline just days away, Secretary Reagan said she’s excited about the chance to help libraries take on even more roles within Arizona.

“Some of the things we’ve funded are things I would never have imagined,” she said. “The diversity is amazing. This isn’t how libraries were when I was growing up!”

All this — and they still have books, too.

Renowned architect Fred Guirey left stamp on Scottsdale Paul R. Messinger Special to Arizona Republic USA TODAY NETWORK

In the spring of 1958, we were preparing to build our ÿrst mortuary on our old farm at Miller and Indian School roads in Scottsdale.

We talked to Bert Owens, a licensed general contractor who was our neighbor at Miller Road and Citrus (today called Camelback Road). We asked Bert about architects and he suggested Fred Guirey.

We contacted Guirey and his assistant, Murray Harris.

They looked at my “oorplan ideas.

We told them the building should have some outside glass walls, wide halls and a shaded north entry and the outside should not be dated to re“ect any era.

Before he started, Guirey had us look at his home on Missouri Avenue near Central Avenue in Phoenix. He had built it for his family about 20 years earlier.

The home had major window walls, exposed wood framing and wood beams.

It was not dated, and it seemed to ÿt its site, planned uses and the Southwest.

At one time, it was featured in the Modern Phoenix Home Tour.

We hired Guirey and Associates.

Within a month, the architects provided us a front elevation featuring a long, shaded entry supported by iron “tree form columns” that were ÿtted with small but very thick pieces of French stained glass. The wide fascia gave it the appearance of strength. It was an ageless design that still looks good 60 years later.

When Guirey designed our chapel, he made the side walls glass, “oor to ceiling, and set them in wood frames. He added a covered entry on the southern side of the building. The ceiling was constructed of laminated wood set on four major steel bents, with a steel-lined wood air-conditioning duct down the center of the ceiling. This allows slow-

moving cool air to fall from the ceiling, making the air-conditioning virtually silent.

Over these 60 years, we have not changed the chapel or the entrances.

We’ve just maintained them. When people ask us when the mortuary was built and we tell them 1958, they are surprised. The building does not date itself,

which was intentional.

During construction of our building, Guirey had to stop work on our project for about 90 days so he could develop the prototype for the ÿrst Ramada Inn. The Isbell family here in the Valley was starting its chain of hotels. They commissioned Guirey to provide a design that could be repeated worldwide. The ÿrst Ramada Inn was built that summer on East Van Buren Street in Phoenix.

Guirey was a highly successful architect who designed the ÿrst sanctuary of the Scottsdale United Methodist Church on Miller Road, the state Transportation Department building on 17th Avenue south of the Capitol and many other buildings.

It is nice to be able to look back and see the fruits of this man’s life’s work more than a half-century later.

This year’s Cactus League Hall of Fame induction and an exhibit at Scottsdale’s Civic Center Library touch upon a little-known chapter of history — WWII Japanese internment camp baseball and the impact it had on the sport and culture of Arizona.

As part of that programming, the Arizona Spring Training Experience and the Cactus League Hall of Fame on March 13 will present a free screening of the 2007 feature ÿlm “American Pastime.”

In conjunction with the induction of Chicago Cubs longtime clubhouse manager Yosh Kawano to the Hall of Fame, “American Pastime” provides an intimate look into the lives of Japanese Americans detained at internment camps during WW II and the signiÿcance of baseball in Japanese-American

culture.

Kawano, who worked as a teenage bat boy for the Chicago White Sox and spent 65 years in the Chicago Cubs organization, was detained with his family at the Poston War Relocation Center near Yuma before embarking on his Big League career.

The March 13 screening of “American Pastime” will be introduced and followed by a Q&A session with producer Kerry Yo Nakagawa, founding curator of “Diamonds in the Rough,” an international touring exhibit on JapaneseAmerican baseball.

Author Bill Staples, who wrote “The Legacy of Japanese American Baseball,” will also be participating in the postÿlm discussion.

Jewish Foundation raises $914K Special to Arizona Republic USA TODAY NETWORK

Nearly 600 guests gathered for the Jewish Federation of Greater Phoenix’s sold-out MEGA 2018 at the Scottsdale Hilton Resort on Feb. 15, raising $914 ,600 for the federation’s annual campaign.

Featured guest David Gregory, broadcast journalist and author, discussed the role faith has played in his life and that of his family. He also read a few passages from his book “How’s Your Faith?”, a question posed to him as chief White House correspondent during an interview with President George W. Bush.

Jewish Federations of North America President and CEO Jerry Silverman also spoke, sharing the work the federation is doing across the continent and around the world.

The evening was highlighted by the presentation of the Jewish Federation of Greater Phoenix’s highest award, the Medal of Honor, to Irwin Kanefsky for

his decades-long commitment to the federation and the community.

“It was very humbling to be acknowledged in front of my friends and family. I will always cherish being part of a group of Phoenix Jewish leaders who have had the vision and passion to set the standard for Jewish communal involvement,” said Kanefsky. “It is very special to be one of only four couples in the history of this community to have both received the Medal of Honor.”

Irwin’s wife, Shari, received the Medal of Honor in 2014.

Additionally, Jonathan and Rachel Hoffer received the inaugural Harold & Jean Grossman Award.

“It was a blessing to witness Irwin Kanefsky receive the Medal of Honor for lifetime achievement and for me to stand in for Jean Grossman to present the inaugural Harold & Jean Grossman Award to Jonathan and Rachel Hoffer,” said Marty Haberer, CEO. The event was co-chaired by Ben and Sasha Ellis and Jerome and Anita Gutkin.

Another restaurant has closed on Seventh Street’s restaurant row in central Phoenix and the area that was recently shaping up to be a food-and-drink utopia doesn’t look like such a sure thing.

Joe’s Midnight Run at Seventh Street just north of Bethany Home Road is now closed.

The restaurant in a former drivethrough liquor store was originally opened by Rick Cordova in April 2016 and focused on wood-ÿred dishes and latenight eats. Bob Mayo, formerly of Roy’s Hawaiian, took over operations in December last year.

“We were working with our guests to tweak the concept and felt we were making real progress,” Mayo wrote in an email. “Although we were very busy on

Friday(s) and Saturdays, the rest of the week was a struggle. In the end, we just couldn’t sustain those slow weekdays.”

Mayo said he is working with other Valley restaurants to help his employees ÿnd work. The news came abruptly Monday afternoon with a short post about the closure on the restaurant’s social media pages, including on Facebook. On Sunday, there was a post about Prime Rib Sundays with no indication of the closing.

The area along Seventh Street from Missouri Avenue to just north of Bethany Home Road has become a food hub in recent years, with a number old buildings being transformed into hot new eateries and late-night spots. But there have been a string of closures in less than a year: z Herb Box, which was the ÿrst restaurant at the Colony, a retail-dining complex on Seventh Street, closed last May. z Cullen Campbell’s Southern spot Okra Cookhouse & Cocktails shuttered in October. z Casa Añejo shut its doors in January after less than a year in business. It will reopen as another location of the downtown Scottsdale sports bar Bevvy.

Evening Entertainment Group’s most recent flashy splash in central Phoenix lasted less than a year, but a replacement is already in the works.

Casa Añejo, the contemporary Mexican restaurant with a menu designed by chef Joe Absolor and a glitzy room designed by Alison Victoria and featured on “Kitchen Crashers,” closed in January.

In its place, owners Diane and Les Corieri will open a second location of Bevvy, which launched in downtown Scottsdale in 2015.

The switch marks another notable change for the wild Seventh Street scene, where a massive restaurant boom has, more recently, generated busts, including the now-shuttered Barrio Urbano and Okra. Evening Enter-

tainment Group’s other Seventh Street projects, Stock & Stable and Honor Amongst Thieves, remain unchanged.

The new Bevvy will be similar to the original, heavily focused on a central bar with casual pub fare, wood paneling, numerous televisions, DJs, a large patio and an assortment of bar games and entertainment.

Having operated Evening Entertainment Group for over two decades, the Corieris are the godparents of the Scottsdale nightlife scene, with successes like Sandbar, Bottled Blonde, The Mint and RnR in their portfolio. Their most recent project, Casa Amigos and Skylanes, opened in downtown Scottsdale in January.

The new Bevvy is scheduled to open in mid-March.

Well I’m back. Older, wiser and “wit” as much passion to produce a delicious sandwich. Still asking the age-old question: Slather the Cheez Whiz on the bread or on top of the meat?

I decided to beat the odds of getting called out again, so I went to cheesesteak school for a day, sort of. I asked a local Philly sandwich shop to take me behind the scenes to watch this iconic sandwich in the making.

Second choice: Rib eye. Third choices: skirt steak, flat iron steak, top round.

The Slice: Thin. Freeze it ÿrst and then slice into ribbons of beef no thicker than a quarter-inch.

The Onions: sweet yellow onions, chopped in 1⁄2-inch squares, cooked up on a hot, flat griddle with vegetable oil, salt and pepper until golden brown.

The Bread: The authentic cheesesteak bread is called an Amaroso roll. It’s not a sweet dough. It’s not a sour dough.

The official term, they told me, is “Philly cheesesteak white bread.” You probably won’t ÿnd Amaroso rolls out here, so a

Has your child, teen or grown-human companion been spending a little more time than usual playing the X-Box, computer or other video-game device? And sporadically yelling at the absolute top of their lungs like a crazy person while doing so?

Well, they’ve probably been playing a newish video game called Fortnite. You have questions. Here are some answers.

Let’s go.

What kind of game is Fortnite?

Fortnite is a shooter game with a pinch of Minecraft, where the hook is that players get dropped onto an island with 99 other gamers and try to be the last one alive. It’s one of the ÿrst games in this new genre.

(Technically, there are two modes of Fortnite, the ubiquitous “Battle Royale” mode, with 100 players all trying to murder each other, and the much less popular “Save the World” mode, which is played against computer-controlled monsters, not other gamers.)

What’s the big deal?

No one knows. Scientists have yet to weigh in on the game’s burgeoning popularity, although early reports suggest that at the very least, being addicted to a video game is more understandable than wanting to twirl a ÿdget spinner.

But why do they have to yell while they’re playing?

The knuckleheads play in groups and use their headsets to communicate with each other and strategize. Oddly, because of the intense game play and noise-canceling e“ ect of their headphones, this leads to more full-throated Continued on Page 21

Don’t they have enough common sense to realize that they’re screaming at the top of their lungs for hours on end?

No. Remember the water-bottle flipping craze of 2016?

Good point. Does this Fortnite thing have something to do with how much time my kid/companion is spending on YouTube?

Yes. There are dozens of YouTube stars, like “Ninja” and “Muselk,” who stream videos of themselves playing Fortnite, with new ones popping up all the time.

Why would watching someone else play video games be entertaining?

What am I, a wizard? I still can’t ÿgure out how they can organize walkout protests nationwide over social media and harness the power of their phones to make well-produced videos but at the same time think Drake makes quality music.

Is Fortnite hyper-realistic and technologically advanced?

Not really. It actually looks like a cartoon.

And as for realism, it still su‘ ers from those weird video-game things where you can build a flight of stairs on the run or vaporize a wall with a couple whacks of an ax, and the jumping. … Video games have come such a long way in my lifetime.

Hmm. Maybe we could play.

Settle down. Kids playing Fortnite wield their 4 2-button controllers with as much speed and vigor as the Toyota sales dork during a sale on Camrys.

I’ve never felt older than when I tried to follow along with my son playing Fortnite, save for that time the radio started playing the New Radicals, “You Get What You Give,” and I spontaneously half-rapped along with that one weird part near the end.

Yikes. I bet the kids would think you’re a weirdo!

Maybe. Or maybe Fortnite players just want to bust out and express themselves too …

With thousands of Arizona families expected to hit the road this spring break and starting to make summer road-trip travel plans, now is a good time to learn about keeping pets safe when traveling by car, SUV or truck.

Basic rules can help reduce the risk of a crash or serious injury.

“When traveling with your pet, safety and comfort should be paramount,” said Bretta Nelson, Arizona Humane Society spokesperson. “A good rule of thumb is a child litmus test; if you wouldn’t allow a child to do something, your pet shouldn’t be exposed to it either.”

Among the safe-travel tips shared by the Arizona Humane Society: Keep the roam in check. A 10-pound cat or dog can easily be thrown from a vehicle in a potential crash. Crates, es-

pecially those that are anchored to the vehicle, are key to ensuring safety for pets. While restraints or pet seat belts are helpful in keeping pets from roaming, they haven’t been reliably shown to protect pets in a crash.

Make truck travel safer. Free-range pets in the back of a truck bed is a bad idea. Crashes, flying debris, weather conditions and loud tra“c noises that could scare a pet into jumping out of the truck are all hazards. Tethers and leashes are not a good restraint and could cause choking or dragging if a pet jumps out of the bed. Always keep pets with you in the interior of a vehicle while traveling and never leave a pet unattended in a vehicle.

Chinese Culture and Cuisine Festival offers a taste of Asia Andrea Estrada Cronkite News

For two days in February, Margaret T. Hance Park became the epicenter of Chinese culture and traditions as the 28th annual Chinese Cultural and Cuisine Festival took over the public space, offering Valley locals an opportunity to see, hear and taste what the Asian country has to offer.

Jeffrey Chow, a resident of Gilbert, and his wife brought their two young children to the festival, which ran Feb. 16-18. They said they came to enjoy the food and activities, but more than that, they came to expose their kids to their culture.

“We wanted to make sure our children kind of understood about what the whole celebration was about and to get them to understand their roots,” Chow said.

Martial arts performers took to an

outdoor stage to present their own bit of Chinese culture in the form of juggling ÿre spears and precisely slicing thin paper with just the ‘ick of a whip.

Chow said the performance, yet another display of Chinese culture, was among the several reasons for bringing his children to the festival.

Apart from the performances, the opportunity to taste traditional Chinese foods was another attractive factor to festival goers.

“The ÿrst thing that we were looking for was Chinese food, because that’s my heritage,” said Ray Chin, an Arizona resident of Chinese descent.

Ana Heinbach, owner of Steamed Buns, said what makes the food at this festival different is that it is not commercialized nor Americanized.

“When you go to a festival like this, there are more original Chinese foods.

The way our grandparents used to make,” she added.

“Sun Lanterns” by Eli Richard is an art installation featuring 23 solar-powered, multicolored plexiglass and steel lanterns. In February, Richard installed the lanterns in the non-functioning fountains, directly north of Robert Indiana’s “LOVE,” near the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts.

The fountains are at the center of Scottsdale Civic Center Mall, directly over Drinkwater Boulevard. They were shut o“ to prevent water from further damaging the bridge that spans Drinkwater Boulevard.

The city plans to renovate the Civic Center Mall, but because construction will not start for more than a year, Scottsdale Public Art was asked to ÿnd a creative design solution for the inactive fountains during the Civic Center Mall redesign phase. The city allocated

$30,000 of Community Arts Trust funds for the project.

Scottsdale Public Art then released an open call for project proposals and eventually selected Richard, an emerging artist based in Tempe. Richard’s

proposal included plans for lanterns of varying sizes to be installed throughout the fountains at multiple elevations.

The solar panels would absorb energy from the sun during the day and use it to illuminate the plexiglass lanterns at

night.

Richard’s design was inspired by the “quiet beauty of the desert,” including the dramatic colors of the local landscape, from verdant vegetation to multihued sunsets . “The color was also meant to bring a lot of energy to the space,” Richard said.

Color is not only found in the lanterns themselves but in the shadows they cast on the fountains during the day — as the sun shines through them — and at night, when they are illuminated by the solar lights within their structure. Triggered by solar sensors, the lanterns ‘ick er on, one by one, around twilight each night and turn o“ each morning with the rising sun.

Because of the redesign plans for the Civic Center Mall, “Sun Lanterns” is not a permanent installation. It is expected to remain in place for 18 to 24 months. It will then be donated to the city of Scottsdale for future public display.

Due to its prominent location in the Civic Center Mall, “Sun Lanterns” will greet a large number of visitors this weekend for the annual Scottsdale Arts Festival 10 a.m.-6 p.m. today and 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Don’t publish shooter’s name Everyone wrings their hands and wonders what we can do about mass shootings in schools and other public places. In addition to the much publicized mental-health and gun issues, media must take a large portion of the blame.

All national and local media show the chaos and publish the shooter’s name and history over and over again as they sensationalize this horriÿc act.

Stop sensationalizing these shootings, stop publishing the shooter’s name — report the news, but the shooter’s name does not need to become a household word. Stop feeding the beast!

Suggested changes on gun policy Regarding the March 3 letter to the editor “Make our children safe from guns”: The writer has stated many valid reasons for introducing safety issues. However, there are many issues the Ameri-

can voter will have to resolve before we see any changes.

The nomenclature describing the ÿx for this issue is commonly known as “gun control.” This is a ridiculous term.

There is no such thing as gun control.

You cannot control guns.

This is a term probably coined by the NRA and possibly the media, who have a common agenda to promote controversy. Controversy promotes headlines, which in turn result in higher TV and newspaper ratings and sales.

The appropriate term for this issue should be “gun-safety solutions.”

The other issue the American voting public should address is a way to prevent our congressmen, senators and president from feeding at the NRA trough.

This trough is replenished continually with money from sources unknown to us. Once these issues are resolved, we will see reasonable solutions.

Gov. Ducey is tax-averse

There are proposals out there to raise the cost of annual vehicle registrations.

Gov. Doug Ducey’s spokesperson said the governor doesn’t typically comment on proposed legislation until it is on his desk.

First, I have seen Ducey on many occasions support legislation before, during and after the legislative process.

Second, isn’t the governor supposed to help in“uence what legislation is prioritized, even if that means a threat of veto?

Whether Ducey supports this measure will be directly related to how e‘ ectively this proposal is deÿned as a tax. If we can make sure it is known that it is, in fact, a tax and not simply a fee, Ducey may feel compelled to block it.

Ducey, I am sure, is hoping it can drift through the process as a simple fee. You see, Ducey has committed to not raising taxes, which is why he loves fees.

Fees allow Ducey (and his Koch supporters) to stick it to average working folks while still giving bigger and bigger tax cuts to the wealthy and corporations. The money has to come from

somewhere, folks.

So when Ducey is given a choice between taxes on the rich or “fees” on the workers, get out your checkbook if you shower after work, because you lose.
