We remain focused on top-notch staffing and competitive compensation, to maintain the highest standards for our educators and employees. Approval of the budget override by our community in November has given us the means to retain and recruit the best of the best.

Our push to integrate technology into the classrooms continues. Thanks to the voter-supported bond funds, access to secured and filtered Internet resources is opening up a whole new world of educational opportunities for Mesa’s children.

Over the past several years, education has experienced many changes—changes in funding, standards, assessments and more. But one thing hasn’t changed—our conviction that every student is important, valued and deserving of every opportunity to learn and achieve.

John-David Bowman Teacher of the Year John-David Bowman Maestro del Año

When Westwood High’s John-David Bowman was named 2015 Arizona Teacher of the Year by the Arizona Educational Foundation, he was shocked. “It was like an out-of-body experience,” he remembers.

Bowman, who’s been at Westwood for eight years, teaches International Baccalaureate theory of knowledge, IB history of the Americas and Advanced Placement U.S. history.

Bowman loves watching students learn.

Meet Eli Gomez

Conozcan a Eli Gomez

Fremont Junior High’s Eli Gomez is making quite an impression. As National Junior Honor Society president and violist in the advanced orchestra, the eighth-grader is recognized as a leader on campus. He enjoys coming to school and embraces his favorite class, Spanish, so he can communicate fluently with his grandparents and community members.

Gomez’s family inspired his love of service and standing up for his beliefs. “I overcome challenges by being confident about myself, and not just giving in to the pressure of becoming part of the crowd,” he says. Gomez has learned he has a strong voice that should be heard.

Gomez looks forward to college and has already begun collecting scholarship awards.

Although his career path is still undecided, he vows to continue to be a “focused, committed and hard-working student.”

Eli Gomez, de la Escuela Secundaria Fremont, está causando gran impresión.

Meet Mark Andrews Conozcan a Mark Andrews

Summit Academy has a dynamic leader. “I do things so kids can be successful,” admits principal Mark Andrews. From the day he established the A-rated, K-8 International Baccalaureate school from two former schools, he has focused on student success. More than 50 percent of students who attend Summit Academy choose to on open enrollment. s student council president at Carson Junior High, eighth-grader Jacob Valdez uses his position to change lives. “I love being a leader,” he smiles. “I help those who don’t stand out by making them feel like they’re a star. I also help new students gain confidence so they’re not as scared.”

Valdez will attend Westwood High School, and he’s excited about the school’s opportunities.

“I’ll try to get into International Baccalaureate courses, take Advanced Placement classes, stay in AVID and do extracurricular activities like soccer,” he says.

Valdez’s future is bright, and his favorite subjects will help him get there. “Math and science are a strong foundation of what I want to do when I grow up, which is become a nuclear engineer,” he explains. Valdez also loves music and sees its importance in his future. “Music combines everything. Without music, you have no rhythm to complete anything in life.” estrellas. hen Hermosa Vista kindergartners start getting restless or unfocused in class, teacher Kris Burton knows just what to do.

It’s time to move.

Thanks to innovative HOPSports Brain Breaks,® the students get the benefits of physical activity without leaving the classroom. Brain Breaks® are short, web-based physical activities for students.

Mesa Public Schools integrated the program into its curriculum three years ago.

“It re-energizes and refocuses them—they love it,” says Burton, an 18-year teaching veteran who has been using the program since its inception. “I take 14

my cues from the students. When I see their eyes glaze over, or it’s been a particularly long lesson, it’s a great break.”

The two-to-five-minute exercises are designed based on extensive scientific evidence that proves when kids move, they learn. Burton can attest to that. “When they sit down, they know it’s time to regroup and focus on the lesson at hand,” she says.

Activity boosts academics Deb Pangrazi, the district’s elementary physical education coordinator, brought Brain Breaks® to Mesa Public Schools along with her husband, Dr. Robert Pangrazi.

“Research showed a strong and positive relationship between physical activity and academics,” Pangrazi says. “Attention span, classroom behavior, attendance and achievement test scores positively correlated with physical activity.”

Brain Breaks® get students on their feet, Pangrazi explains. Among the lessons: pretending they’re on a roller coaster,

racing around a track or walking through peanut butter.

“Teachers have an instant tool to revitalize the classroom environment and enhance student learning,” Pangrazi says.

Burton says the roller coaster and racetrack activities were particularly popular with her students.

ccording to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, in 2010 one out of 64 children in Arizona was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

More than 8,600 special-education students are enrolled in Mesa Public Schools, and 800 of those students have a primary disability of autism. Mesa Public Schools is responding to the unique needs of students with autism in a variety of ways. Some receive instruction in general education classes, others may receive specialized instruction related to their disability with a special education teacher on their school campus, and students who need intensive interventions attend the autism classes at SHARP School. SHARP stands for School Home Adjustment Reinforcement Program.

SHARP School serves the special-education community from kindergarten through 12th grade. The autism program is specifically designed to teach students basic skills such as how to look, listen and imitate, as well as complex skills like reading, conversing and understanding another person’s perspective.

The program utilizes research-based teaching practices based on the principles of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) to bring positive change in learning and behavior to its students.

Leilani Scott, principal at SHARP School, says, “Numerous studies have demonstrated that children with autism experience significant improvements in learning, reasoning, communication and adaptability when they participate in high-quality ABA programs. We individualize interventions to each learner’s needs, skills, interests, preferences and family situations.”

This year students were introduced to daily rotations between classrooms for greater socialization between staff, students, abilities and age ranges. In the afternoon, secondary students participate in transition-to-work and lifeskills lessons.

Anna Miller, secondary autism teacher, explains, “Teaching students social skills and the ability to communicate their need for things like food, drink and sensory issues is huge for their success in school and beyond.”

Adaptive Technology Each student’s needs are different. Along with the use of prompts and strategies, some may use pictures to communicate and others may use technology devices. Devices give students a vocabulary, enabling them to participate in instruction and discussions.

“Technology has opened up new avenues of communication for some students,” explains Miller. “For example, when one of our students received his communication device, it changed his life because for the first time he could put several words together to form sentences.”

Programa para los estudiantes con autismo en la escuela SHARP

Más de 8,600 estudiantes de educación especial están inscritos en las Escuelas Públicas de Mesa y 800 de ellos tienen una discapacidad primaria de autismo. Volz is also the phase liaison at SHARP School, where she coordinates the process of transitioning students back to their comprehensive campuses. She has facilitated transitions for nearly 200 children. To transition, students must demonstrate appropriate behavioral skills that will enable them to successfully phase back to their school campuses. Volz spends approximately nine weeks working closely with each student during transition.

esa Public Schools food and nutrition department provides students with a wide selection of foods that are both appealing and nutritious.

School breakfasts and lunch menus must meet the minimum guidelines set by the USDA for protein, grains, fruits, vegetables and fat calories.

It’s essential to keep menus cost-effective and, at the end of the day, ensure students’ taste buds are satisfied.

Chef Michael Turcotte of the East Valley Institute of Technology, and Schwan’s Food Service Chef Craig Claude conduct food demonstrations to enhance the team’s culinary skills. The cooks get creative with products already in their inventory, while adhering to new USDA guidelines.

Mesa Public Schools continuously improves recipes to meet the needs of our customers’ discerning palates. Professional development plays an important role in keeping menus fresh and engaging. For example, members of the food and nutrition department participate in workshops on knife skills, spicing up flavor profiles, food preparation techniques and recipe development.

“Recognizing the versatility of our products opens a world of creativity to us,” says Loretta Zullo, director of food and nutrition.

Chef Claude taught them how to take a round pizza product with a proven success rate and reinvent it by turning it into a stromboli. It was a tasty and satisfying lesson in adding additional vegetables to a lunchtime classic.

USDA reduced sodium guidelines to make school lunches healthier. It can take time for taste buds to adjust, but lower sodium does not have to mean less flavor. Our culinarians create flavor profiles using spices and herbs to amp up flavors without salt. New flavor

profiles offer flexibility in the kitchen and is an important tool when servicing the needs of students.

The composition of school meals takes into consideration how they are consumed. For example, in elementary schools, meals are designed to be eaten with smaller hands or with a spork. At Westwood High School, more than 800 lunches are served in 35 minutes. Mesa Public Schools serves more than 37,000 lunches per day at 79 schools, and 18,000 breakfasts per day at 67 schools.

Food and nutrition conducts student taste-testing of new products at elementary, junior high and high schools throughout the school year to evaluate potential new items.

The goal is to have students enjoy and finish their meals. Research indicates children who are well-nourished have improved concentration, elevated test scores, better school attendance and fewer behavioral issues.

What is AzMERIT?

A

rizona’s Measurement of Educational Readiness to Inform Teaching (AzMERIT) is the new assessment that Arizona students will take to measure their mastery of standards.

It replaces Arizona’s Instrument to Measure Standards (AIMS). The test will be administered this spring.

¿Qué es AzMERIT?

How will students take the new assessment? Students will take AzMERIT on a school computer. For sites that are not equipped or ready to administer a computer-based assessment, a paper version of the test will be administered.

AIMS Science will be administered to students in grades four and eight, and in ninth or 10th grade at the end of a course in biology.

How do we expect students to score on AzMERIT? Requirements to pass the test will not be known until late summer. However, in other states that implemented new standards and assessments, only 30 to 40 percent of students passed the tests in the first year. It is expected that similar results will occur in Arizona.

The presenting teacher begins each webinar by display-

ing a screen with that day’s topic and the “do for the day.” She greets students as they enter the webinar and conducts a homework review and a questionand-answer session before moving to the daily lesson.

The supporting teacher records and archives classes so students can review them at any time, and answers individual and group questions. If several students have the same question, she advises the presenting teacher, and she can stop and review the material.

Students participate in class using a district-issued tablet with a built-in webcam, microphone and stylus pen. They use the stylus pen as if they were joining the teacher at the whiteboard. Students raise their “virtual hand” to ask questions, and the teachers unmute them so all attendees hear. A virtual “thumbs up” signals they are ready; a caution sign indicates they need assistance to get back on task.

Students submit their homework using Edmodo by saving it as a notebook document or taking a picture of it with their doc cam and converting it into a JPEG. Johnson says, “Mesa Public Schools is challenging these students and providing technological opportunities that are used in real life. They are participating in webinars, just like the real world, using cutting-edge technology to learn and to help prepare them for jobs that may not even exist yet. It takes a strong, self-motivated student to succeed in this atmosphere since we are not able to hover over them, keeping them focused.”

When greeted at logon, students were asked how they feel about the class. They reported it is the best part of their academic day. Recently one student shared, “Good morning. Still in Hawaii for one more day but couldn’t miss your class.”

Going green results in saving green

F

rom July through March of 2014, Mesa Public Schools saved $1,756,792 in electrical costs. The savings can be attributed to renovations, school closures and changes in practice. The savings in natural gas during the same timeframe is $414,080.

Energy conscious renovation expenditures include $8.2 million HVAC and chiller replacements, Energy Management Systems upgrades and lighting improvements.

And, the district is a leader in converting to propane-fueled school buses. In fiscal year 2014, 61 propane buses were purchased with $7.5 million in bond funds. Over five years, the expected savings will total $3.3 million.

Mesa Public Schools also has a robust recycling program. The district estimates it saves more than $100,000 annually through its participation in the City of Mesa’s Blue Barrel Program. More than 1,400 barrels and cardboard bins are deployed at school and department sites.

Tom Farnsworth, Westwood High School graduate and successful physical therapist for more than 17 years, credits a high school football injury for helping him find his passion for a career in the medical field.

Tom’s therapist, a family friend and Westwood alumnus, assisted him with his rehabilitation. He gave him not only the opportunity to finish the season, but also helped guide Tom by suggesting classes and teachers to prepare him for college.

“Each day brings new cases and people, and I enjoy going to work every day,” he says. “To anyone interested in physical therapy, load up on science courses in high school and college, and don’t get discouraged.

The earlier you decide on a school to attend, the better.

You can then concentrate on what prerequisites you need to apply to physical therapy school.”

The grounds department proudly participates in the city’s green waste program by recycling grass and landscaping cuttings.

Other items recycled include batteries, asphalt waste, wiring, metal, light bulbs and ballasts.
