Meet our cover stars

T

he arts have played a significant role throughout my life. I have fond memories of performing onstage in Oklahoma! as a high-school student. I proudly attended my four sons’ choir concerts, always amazed at the musicality attained by our students. And now, I strive to attend the district’s art shows and as many music performances and drama productions as possible.

Students and staff pour their hearts into these life-changing opportunities. For many of our students, music and the arts are the reasons they come to school every day.

Mesa has always been a strong supporter of arts in the schools. It is woven into the K-12 educational fabric of our community, along with strong academics, quality athletics experiences and other opportunities that respond to the needs of a diverse student population.

In this issue, we are pleased to share the creative and performing arts successes we have achieved. Enjoy!

Las artes han tenido un papel importante en mi vida. Como estudiante de la escuela preparatoria, ¡guardo gratos recuerdos de mi participación en el musical Oklahoma! eveloping student leaders is part of the culture established at Mesa Academy for Advanced Studies. Dedicated staff help students discover their passions and talents, while developing their skills and understanding of leadership. “The International Baccalaureate program promotes the qualities of leadership necessary for student success,” explains Bob Crispin, principal of Mesa Academy. “Being open-minded inquirers, thinkers, communicators and risk-takers are among the traits embedded throughout our curriculum.”

As the academy shifts from teacher-centric to student-centric classrooms, Crispin sees more students taking charge of their quest for knowledge. “This student empowerment creates wonderful opportunities for learning and leadership,” he says. “It’s reflected in students teaching their peers, contributing to evaluation criteria and assessing their own work against established criteria.”

Everyday artists are created in Mesa Public Schools

uzanne Erickson’s sculpture class at Smith Junior High is truly hands on. In early weeks, students learn how to create pinch pots, coils and slabs together at tables. Later in the semester, they work with the pottery wheel, making vases, bowls, masks, intricate mosaics and even clay guitars.

Erickson has taught at Smith Junior High since 2001. After visiting the school one day as an elementary teacher, she was surprised to feel drawn to junior high. “I found that I liked working with the older kids,” she says.

“They’re amazing and unique. I encourage confidence and positivity. It’s a safe place to be who they are.”

Erickson’s classes welcome all types of students. Even those who struggle in other classes can thrive in hers. “I want them

to trust me,” she says. “I do that by getting to know them and laughing with them. I pay attention and observe. When they share, they’re not scared that I’ll criticize. And I will never ever compare them.”

Her students clearly feel at ease. “Mrs. Erickson teaches us things while making it fun,” says eighth-grader Jessica Hill. “You learn to get along with people you don’t normally interact with.”

Arts benefit the whole student Mesa Public Schools has a robust creative and performing arts program. Students throughout the district have access to teachers and coursework that urge them to be themselves.

“Traditionally, arts education is looked at as an extra or nice to have,” says Patrick Walsh, director of creative and performing arts. “The skills that are taught through arts education — expression, collaboration, innovation and

Like many district elementary art teachers, Scott Krenytzky divides his time between multiple schools. He currently teaches art to fourth-, fifth- and sixth-graders one day per week at Keller, Lehi, Redbird, Roosevelt and Whitman elementary schools.

Krenytzky says a common misconception about elementary art programs is that it’s about creating lookalike projects. “My goal is that when my students finish a project, every one is different,” he explains. “As long as they incorporate patterns, shape and texture, I know they understand the concept. It’s not about following directions. There’s so much freedom, that’s the essence of creativity.”

Granese spends half her day integrating art curriculum with math, science, language arts and social studies content. Several other district schools followed Eisenhower’s lead in doing the same. “I believe the arts are an integral part of a well-rounded education,” she says. “At ECFI, I am reminded every day not only how much our primary students have grown in their knowledge of art processes, vocabulary and technical skills, but also how they have strengthened their knowledge of academic subjects through art. It feels good to hear a classroom teacher tell me that my art lesson helped their student achieve more.”

Krenytzky and Granese are thrilled when any student realizes he or is an artist. “I love those moments when you see a student light up because they finally get it or when they are proud of themselves for creating something they doubted they could,” Granese says.

Students in Mesa Public Schools’ dance program are learning to communicate using their bodies.

Dancers use moves such as demi plié, arabesque and pas de bourrée to tell their beautiful stories.

“The study of dance is physically demanding, and students train as athletes building strength, flexibility, endurance and precision of technique,” Arnold explains.

The dance program is open to junior-high and high-school students.

They have the opportunity to advance their understanding of the fundamentals of dance technique and composition in ballet, modern, jazz and hip hop in a safe noncompetitive atmosphere.

“Like all fine arts classes, dance helps students become aware of themselves and develop confidence in their physical form,” says Patrick Walsh, director of creative and performing arts. “For some students, this program is the only creative outlet in their day, and students who have difficulty expressing themselves through speaking and writing are able to do so in the dance room.”

Inspiring students through movement Students develop discipline and coordination so they can move with style and grace. They learn the art of storytelling through movement and how to express emotion through facial expression. Students in the highest level can spend countless hours after school each week practicing their craft.

“Dance acts as a form of therapy, it’s an outlet for students to express themselves,” Arnold says. “Dance boosts self-confidence that carries over into all aspects of their lives. I want students to find a love for dance as physical fitness and a way of life.”

Practice makes perfect As dancers from the Westwood dance company prepare for a performance, they call on memorization skills while collaborating with others. The smiles on their faces radiate pure joy as they rehearse.

“Our dance department is extremely varied,” shares Jeanette Layton, Westwood High School dance teacher. “Classes are open to everyone.

Most students begin with little to no prior experience aside from watching dance videos or dancing socially. Some students have been dancing from a young age.”

Lauren Hawks, senior at Westwood, was named 2016 Distinguished Young Woman of Arizona, and she credits the dance program for the conditioning and training she needed to represent Arizona in a national competition.

“Dance has taught me how to find passion in what I do,” Hawks says. “There is something fulfilling in knowing what one’s body is capable of doing. Through dance, I forge a link between my mind, body and soul, resulting in the most honest and raw movement.”

Sarah Woods, junior at Westwood, turned to dance when her mom was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.

“My world was falling apart,” she says. “But Mrs. Layton inspired me to express my feelings through dance, and opening up my heart and mind to it has given me my best friends. We are a family. Now that my mom is getting better, I dance more. She is my inspiration and I dance for her.”

“Mi mundo se desmoronaba”, dice ella. “Pero la Sra. Layton me entusiasmó para que expresara mis sentimientos a través de la danza, y he encontrado a mis mejores amigos al abrir mi corazón y mi mente a la danza.

Somos una familia. Ahora que mi mamá está mejorando, bailo más. Ella es mi inspiración y bailo para ella”.

n a cold January morning, Sandy Stones’ drama students prepare to perform for visiting juniorhigh school students. With seven minutes to wow future Jackrabbits, the actors are focused and excited. As stage tech students prepare the auditorium, it feels more like a professional performance than an assembly. But that is what’s to be expected of Stones’ program.

Stones gets teary eyed remembering her student successes. One student grew up in homeless shelters and attended various schools until she came to Mesa High. At the end of her first week in drama, she told Stones, “I am graduating from this school. I don’t care what it takes.”

explains Patrick Walsh, director of creative and performing arts. “Communication, expression and collaboration are essential to a strong workforce. The creative component of a student’s education can only be developed through classes that ask students to stretch themselves in this unique manner.”

After landing a lead in the fall 2014 production of Seussical the Musical, the student woke up at 4 a.m. every day to travel from a shelter in Phoenix via bus and light rail. Stones drove her home after night rehearsals. “She did whatever it took to graduate and be successful, and I did whatever it took to help her do that,” Stones says.

Matt Erickson taught high school before joining the Rhodes Junior High staff. He adores working with junior-high students. “I get to watch them blossom as students,” he shares. “To be able to expose them to the arts now is so fun.”

Mesa High has won countless awards in the 12 years since Stones has been a teacher. With more than 200 students vying for 40 spots in her beginning drama class, her students view it as a privilege to be taught by the theatre veteran. However, Stones feels like she’s the lucky one, saying, “I love my job.”

“We’re not just a drama group, we’re family,” says junior Anson Romney. “Mrs. Stones teaches us to be positive. It makes my day seem easier, and I’m not being a pessimist toward other classes.”

Set roles teach responsibility In Stones’ classes, responsibility is key. “The first six weeks, I give them the tools they need to direct and work with their peers. I teach them how to be managers,” she explains. “I believe kids learn best when they own it. They know my expectations and parameters, and they take the program and run.”

Junior-high students enjoy the arts Theatre education is available at the six comprehensive high schools. Depending on interest and available resources, theatre classes are offered in junior high schools.

The classes provide students the opportunity to express themselves without fear. “To be successful in modern society, students must be able to communicate on many levels,”

Erickson says students don’t need big personalities to succeed in drama. “I’ve had kids go from quiet to outgoing,” he says. “I had a shy student who got interested in theatre after seeing what I was doing. He helped backstage in seventh grade. In eighth grade, he auditioned for the play and got a lead. He went from a shy kid to someone everyone knew.”

Erickson’s students’ enthusiasm and energy vibrate the room. “We’re able to be ourselves and have tons of fun,” says eighth-grader Jaedia Williams.

And music programs are available throughout the district, from the foundational general music classes offered in grades K-6 to award-winning band, choir and orchestra programs in junior high and high school.

“Music education is cross-curricular. While students learn music, teachers integrate state English language arts and math standards,” says Ruth Argabright, district music coordinator, “When other curricular areas are integrated with music, learning in these areas becomes more meaningful for students.”

A special kind of learning takes place in music classes that impacts students’ intellectual and emotional development. Patterson Elementary School’s pilot music program and innovative music schedule provide an all-inclusive high-quality educational music experience for all students.

“Music education helps develop well-rounded learners,” says Maxine Sullivan, principal at Patterson Elementary. “Studies show a strong correlation between music education and academic success in other content areas.”

Engaging students with music The Patterson program provides fourththrough sixth- graders music classes three times per week. Students elect to play an instrument to develop their skills for three years. Students in kindergarten through third grade take music classes twice a week.

necessity for a pull-out schedule by serving the entire classroom at the same time. Parents applaud it because children are thriving with the innovative music schedule.

“Music is more than just playing. It involves perseverance, self-reflection and self-critique, which promotes lifelong learning skills critical to college and career readiness,” says Julie Willis, general music and orchestra teacher at Patterson.

Willis continues, “For example, I have a sixthgrade student who transferred to Patterson never having played an instrument. It would have been easy for her to give up. Instead she overcame obstacles like not having an instrument, and every day she practiced before and after school on classroom equipment. Her parents saw her determination and progress, and they found a way to get her an instrument. After four months, she was surpassing the students in her class.”

Music is a great equalizer Music can be the key to learning for children who think outside of the box. They enjoy participating in the program with their classmates, and some find music is the motivator to come to school.

“For many of our students, this is the one time during their school day where they feel equal to their peers and are not judged by scores,” shares Angela Mantie, general music and band teacher at Patterson.

“Quality music education creates opportunities for students’ personal contributions, thoughts and ideas to be validated and expressed through song, dance, playing instruments, acting and storytelling. The depth and breadth of engagement may vary, but all children are able to contribute personally or socially.”

C

hrista Cook is a music teacher at Jefferson and Lincoln elementary schools. An alumna of Skyline High School, she started her music career at Patterson Elementary as a fourth-grade student who was fond of the violin.

“My original plan was to play violin for one year until I could join band and play the flute,” Cook says. “After my first year, I fell in love with the violin and never looked back.”

Music is something students can take with them throughout their lives. Not all students will go on to become music majors in college or play in the world’s top symphonies, but it is Cook’s goal to help them acquire the skills and knowledge they need to be lifelong musicians. Whether singing in a community choir, performing at open mic nights or dusting off the cello and playing for pure enjoyment, she hopes her students never lose their passion for music.

Highland Arts creatively increases engagement through art Highland Arts creativamente aumenta el compromiso hacia el arte

here’s something special about Highland Arts Elementary,” says second-grade teacher Nancy Babos. “You feel it the second you walk in the door.”

Every day the arts-integrated school ties visual arts, music, dance and drama into its curriculum.

In Babos’ classroom, students look intently at a Chinese painting, Han Xizai Gives a Night Banquet. Without revealing the name, Babos asks students to notice details and ask questions. The class discusses how the subjects are dressed and what they are eating to determine what is happening. One student even asks, “Is it on silk?” referencing a previous lesson.

This is called deep noticing, and it’s one of the capacities of Lincoln Center Education’s framework for aesthetic education. Highland Arts, along with Kerr Elementary, partnered with the New York-based organization two years ago. Although Highland has always been an arts school, Principal Suzi Rollins recruited Loreen Pearson in 2014 to help launch an increased arts education program.

“I help students build self-confidence and improve presentation skills,” says Pearson, arts director and drama teacher.

“Through oral recitation and reader’s theatre, students increase their fluency, vocabulary and speaking skills.”

In Emily Hultz’s first-grade class, students make owl artwork in a lesson about graphs and surveys. “Having that connection with art and math is a way to have fun and not even realize they’re learning,” she says.

Later, they study a Paul Cézanne artwork while learning about adjectives. “If they notice deeply now, that will transfer into their academics,” Hultz says.

“My hope is that we can give them a strong foundation that will provide a good toolbox as they move on.”

Kindergarten teacher Mary Dominis has watched student engagement soar since the school amped up its arts integration. “I’ve noticed over the last several years, their joy has increased, their learning has increased and their scores have certainly gotten higher,” she says.

The creativity doesn’t stop flowing once school ends. Twice a year, the school’s booster club produces plays. This spring, the school presented Disney’s Cinderella Kids. Longbow Golf Club, First Tee World Golf Organization teach MPS students values

T

he First Tee of Phoenix began introducing golf to students in Mesa Public Elementary Schools (MPS) in 2009. As part of The First Tee National Schools Program, students in schools in this country and across the world are given a basic introduction to golf as part of their physical education curriculum.

The First Tee focuses on Nine Core Values in golf, key values that apply to everyone throughout their lives. Those are Honesty, Integrity, Sportsmanship, Respect, Confidence, Responsibility, Perseverance, Courtesy and Judgment.

Those students who take a serious interest in the game of golf are then introduced to real golf courses for “green grass” lessons like Longbow Golf Club near to where they live where instruction is offered year around.

Sessions last a few weeks at a time led by professional instructors and volunteers from the community.

Thanks to Longbow Golf Club General Manager Bob McNichols and The First Tee World Golf Organization more than 700 MPS

students each year get the chance to learn and enjoy a “green grass” golf experience.

Deb Pangrazi, MPS Elementary Physical Education Coordinator, said three special Junior Golf Clinics have been held annually at Longbow Golf Club for the past six years reaching more than 5,600 students, their teachers and physical education instructors.

The special Junior Golf Clinics introduce golf instruction to students in all 56 MPS elementary schools receive every year.

Upon arrival at the special Junior Golf Clinic, all students are presented with a golf cap donated

by PING, and a t-shirt from The First Tee of Phoenix and Longbow Golf Club.

“Every field trip also includes a trick shot artist, motivational speakers, golf skill clinics that are taught by professional players and elite junior golfers, and a healthy lunch,” Pangrazi said. “Messages about the nine core values, the importance of graduating from high school and going to college are always emphasized throughout the events. The students learn a lot and they have so much fun.”

Skyline High School senior Adriana Tapia has already served as captain of the varsity basketball team and an award-winning volunteer for Chandler Regional Hospital, as well as earning a Gold Congressional Award Medal. Visit the campus to meet the teacher, see their classroom, pick a meeting spot or attend an event to help your child feel at ease.

Create a “Task Chart” together. Having simple jobs at home builds responsibility, self-confidence and a sense of accomplishment.

2. ABCs and 123s Help your child notice numbers, shapes, letters and words everywhere you go. Provide opportunities for your child to count, measure and compare.

Read, read and read some more. Take time to ask your child questions that allow them to retell the story in their own words.

Practice language by singing songs, reciting poems and talking about the world around them.

3. Get moving Encourage home-skills activities like cooking and laundry to build fine motor skills such as scooping, pouring, stirring, sorting and matching.

Play following-direction games like Simon Says to get them running, jumping, climbing, walking in line and skipping.

Practice buttoning, snapping, zipping, tying, washing hands and putting things away. Providing opportunities for your child to manage their personal life skills will help build confidence in their new setting.
