From the innovative 1:1 technology program at Skyline High School to our dual language program helping elementary school students to be proficient in two languages and more, we continue to move toward closing the achievement gap. The district website hosts a wealth of information to help individuals stay connected with news and events, schools, department information and social media. The district YouTube channel, Facebook page, and Twitter and Instagram feeds engage the community with news and information about students, staff and schools. Find us @mpsaz.
Mass communication systems such as SchoolMessenger empower schools to provide information efficiently to parents via phone, text message or email. The system delivers information about everything from school safety and security issues to attendance and school functions. The most important thing a family can do to keep the lines of communication open is to update their child’s school office with any changes to phone numbers, email and home addresses.
The Parent Portal experience at mpsaz.org/mymps provides parents easy, secure access to their secondary child’s grades, attendance, assignment activity and teacher comments. Parents can track their child’s progress and identify areas where they may need extra help. To access your MyMPS account, please visit the school office to pick up your activation key.
To meet the needs of busy parents, the district launched a mobile app with up-to-date district news and information. The user-friendly app makes it easy to find school contact information, calendars, lunch menus and sports schedules. Download the app today from the App Store, Google Play or mpsaz.org/app.

eElla Gardner, family support specialist at Taylor Junior High School, is the mother of six children. Five are Mesa High School graduates. Her youngest, Ty, is currently an eighthgrader at Taylor Junior High and will graduate a Jackrabbit. So there is little surprise that she is an advocate of the educational foundation her children received. “There are so many educational choices today,” Gardner says. “Sending my children to Mesa Public Schools was the right decision for my family. We have assembled a long list of wonderful relationships including administrators, teachers and coaches who influenced and supported my children so they could be successful.”

Here is a snapshot view of her family Preston practices bankruptcy law and business restructuring as an associate attorney at Davis Miles McGuire Gardner, PLLC. He and his wife, Devan, have three children and one on the way. Nicholas will finish his masters in international business from the Thunderbird School of Global Management in December. He is the director of customer support and operations at Risas Dental. Married to Kristen, they have one child. Skylar will graduate from Regency Beauty Institute in November. His two daughters attend Porter Elementary School. 12

Beau graduated from Northern Arizona University with a degree in finance. He signed with the Atlanta Falcons as a free agent to play tight end. His wife, Chelsey, finished her student teaching with Mesa Public Schools. Keelen Johnson came to stay with the Gardner family during his junior year of high school. This Jackrabbit played football at Arizona State University and then played for the Miami Dolphins, Philadelphia Eagles and Dallas Cowboys. Paige married Brandon Eyring, also a Mesa High graduate. They attend Utah State University Eastern on sports scholarships: volleyball and baseball. Ty looks forward to blazing his own trail.

For many students, college is now a reality thanks to this innovative college readiness system.
I
n Arleigh Crispin’s first-hour AVID class at Kino Junior High, students quietly write out their GPA goals for this semester. The eighth-graders list what grade they plan to get in each class and how they will achieve it. As they write, Crispin tells a story about her time at Arizona State University. After her first two years in college, she asked herself why she didn’t have all As. She reasoned that it was because she didn’t set goals. “I then set goals to get As my last two years,” she explains. “Guess what happened?” The class chimes, “You got all As!” Crispin nods and tells students, “With the right mindset, you can do whatever you want.” This is the underlying theme of AVID, which stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination. By setting goals and working toward them, students can attend and succeed in college. Since first adopting the AVID College Readiness System in 2000, at Westwood High School and Kino and Carson junior high schools, the district has seen its students thrive. Now, all secondary schools offer AVID. “AVID is a different way of thinking,” says district AVID specialist Michael Garcia. “It is a belief that our students can achieve at high levels if we push them and support them.” 14

Educators are trained in proven practices such as labeled three-ring binders and Cornell notes. AVID provides research-based strategies and curriculum to elementary and secondary schools. Like AVID Secondary, AVID Elementary focuses on instruction, culture, leadership and systems. It incorporates student success skills, organizational skills, partnerships and
WICOR lessons (writing to learn, inquiry, collaboration, organization and reading to learn in all content areas). Although AVID is an elective class at the secondary level, AVID Elementary is schoolwide. “We are excited about AVID because of the consistency it brings to our school,” says Andrea Erickson, principal of Whitman Elementary, one of seven new AVID schools this year. “AVID provides a platform to set up a ‘college-bound’ culture and create an environment where all students know they have the opportunity to strive for graduation from high school and move on to college.”

At Kino Junior High, Crispin and Rochelle Deriso each teach three AVID classes. “AVID takes students who are typically in the middle with their schoolwork and grades and puts them in rigorous classes. And then we push them,” Crispin explains. Deriso, who teaches AVID to seventh-graders, adds, “We want them to be involved in at least one honors class, or as many as they can handle. AVID college tutors support students in their higher-level classes.”
On the high-school level, AVID offers support to students as they follow the path to college. From college and scholarship applications to SAT and ACT practice, students are outfitted with the tools to succeed after graduation. 16
“As teachers, we become their cheerleaders and advocate for them,” says Mesa High School AVID teacher Nancy Berthold. “Throughout the year, our AVID class becomes a family and the students know they can count on their family to help them navigate through the trials of high school, both academically and personally.”
The benefits of AVID go far beyond K-12. “So many students come to me each year with gratitude for the AVID class and the skills they learned,” Berthold explains. “When they begin college, they realize it is not going to be easy. n English and AVID teacher at Mesa High School for 11 years, Michael Garcia led the school to become an AVID National Demonstration School in 2012 as AVID coordinator. Now Garcia is the district’s AVID specialist, helping lead the expansion of AVID throughout Mesa Public Schools. What’s your favorite memory of a student who told you AVID changed his or her life? I have seen AVID change the lives of hundreds of my students over the years. My favorite memory was at AVID Summer Institute 2009, when my student Luis De La Cruz was chosen to speak in front of more than 6,000 teachers in San Diego, California. What do parents tell you about AVID? Once they see what AVID can do for their child, they start thinking about college as a possibility for the first time. At the elementary level, parents love the organization AVID brings to their students. At the junior-high level, parents respond to the study skills their students learn, as well as the laser focus they have on school. At the high-school level, parents are more thankful, because their son or daughter is headed off to college and generally they have found a way to pay for it. What is a common misconception about AVID? One common misconception about AVID is that it is just for some students. AVID is comprehensive, and the AVID College Readiness System can help ALL students, teachers and leaders be better at what they do.

The Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) was signed into law in 1965 by President Lyndon B. Johnson, who believed that “full educational opportunity” should be “our first national goal.” Title I-A is a section in the ESEA aimed at providing supplemental funds to schools that are at least 40 percent free and reduced lunch. The additional funds support the learning of students who are not performing at grade level in reading, math and writing. Mesa has 55 elementary and junior high Title I schools that identify student needs, develop School Continuous Improvement Plans and allocate federal funds by hiring highly qualified reading and math interventionists and instructional and technology assistants. Title I sites and the district set aside funds to support professional development for teachers and support staff to impact student learning. “Title I funds provide support for the district’s notification system, SchoolMessenger,” says Sue Edman, director of Title I. “They fund important programs like Parent University, family literacy, elementary AVID and key positions that include Title I and family support specialists.”

The answer is Parent University. Mesa Public Schools established Parent University in 1987. Under the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965, federal Title I funding is set aside for parental involvement activities that build partnerships between parents

Family Literacy Program changes lives

small group of parents gather at their children’s elementary school to listen to a presentation on how to help their students develop good study habits. These parents are participating in the Mesa Public Schools Family Literacy Program, which teaches parents of children in kindergarten through third grade skills to support their children and influence their educational success. The program addresses parents’ needs in a four-part approach: •
developing their English language skills
•
helping them understand their children’s academic needs
•
providing parenting lessons on topics such as good nutrition, proper rest and carseat safety
•
encouraging them to spend time in their children’s classroom
The classroom time, or parent and child together (PACT), is essential in helping the participants build a working relationship with their child’s teacher. “When parents enter the Family Literacy Program, they make a big commitment,” says Christine Niven, adult education specialist for Mesa Public Schools. “They are in classes four days a week, learning about everything from how to understand their child’s report card to helping them with homework. They develop important relationships with teachers and staff members. The impact the program has on our families is powerful.” Once parents feel confident, they are encouraged to apply their skills by continuing their education, holding leadership roles in school or parent organizations, or becoming involved in their community.
“Parents who attend the Family Literacy Program become learning role models for their children,” says Kathy Ray, principal at Stevenson Elementary School. “It changes the lives of entire families. Some will continue to get their GED diploma, others excel in the workplace. And they all have higher education expectations for their children.” “It is exciting to watch former students excel,” explains Renita Carlton, family literacy specialist at Stevenson Elementary School. “They continue their studies and earn college degrees, get better jobs, improve their economic situations and make our community stronger.” Family Literacy Programs are available at Adams, Eisenhower Center for Innovation, Holmes, Jefferson, Keller, Lincoln, Longfellow, Porter, Redbird, Stevenson and Whitman elementary schools. Meet Norma Huerta Conozcan a Norma Huerta Norma Huerta is the family literacy and adult education liaison for Mesa Public Schools. Her first involvement with the district was in 1998 as a family literacy student at Webster Elementary School. And it is one of the reasons she is passionate about her role in connecting with adult students.
Along with learning to speak English, the program taught her how to set goals, develop life skills, become a better parent and garner an appreciation for being a lifelong learner.
“As a non-English speaker and stay-at-home mom, I remember how frustrating it was to communicate,” Huerta says. “Especially when taking my children to the doctor or reporting an issue to my landlord. When the opportunity arose to start the literacy program, I jumped at it. I didn’t have transportation and walked several miles each way with my preschoolers in the Arizona heat, and it was worth it.”
“I can say that family literacy impacts families in a positive way,” Huerta shares. “One of the core messages in family literacy is that parents are their children’s first and most important teacher. My four children are products of Mesa Public Schools. The two that walked with me to the literacy program are in college, and my other two children are in elementary school.”

Today, Huerta inspires her peers by presenting workshops at national conferences across the country. She is an alumna of the Hispanic Leadership Institute, a member of the City of Mesa For Our City community organization and a board member of the Mesa Association of Hispanic Citizens.

Norma Huerta es la coordinadora de alfabetización y de educación de adultos para las familias de las Escuelas Públicas de Mesa. Su primera participación en el distrito fue en el año 1998 como estudiante de alfabetización para la familia en Webster Elementary School. Meet Owen Grant Conozcan a Owen Grant
wen Grant, sixth-grader at Brinton Elementary School, boasts that the school’s teachers and students are the best. As student council president, Grant enjoys paying it forward to his beloved school. “I love helping people,” he confesses. “I like doing things that make it a better place. It makes me feel good to help my school.” A well-rounded individual, he plays the viola and is a Boy Scout. However, it is his passion for running and Brinton’s running club that is near and dear to his heart. “I like to cheer people on and do all the races that I can,” he says. “I finished the Phoenix Half Marathon in two hours and 17 minutes.” Grant’s future includes transitioning to junior high school and improving his running time.

Meet Jeanne Vandemark Conozcan a Jeanne Vandemark Jeanne Vandemark keeps the wheels on the district’s 538 school buses moving round and round in the most efficient way. “Transporting students in a safe and timely manner is our priority,” Vandemark says. “Given traffic and road conditions, weather challenges and the number of miles driven, our drivers perform miracles every day for our 29,130 student riders.” Vandemark celebrates 24 years with Mesa Public Schools. This is her second year as director of transportation, leading the more than 800 dedicated and resourceful transportation employees who drive 38,172 miles daily. “We have a diverse group of people in our department that support educators and school leaders,” Vandemark shares. “From retired career firefighters to business owners and college students, we have one common goal, and that is student success.”

What is a tax credit? A tax credit is different from a deduction, because you may subtract the entire contribution from your Arizona state tax bill. With construction projects underway and innovative technology initiatives taking off, Mesa Public Schools students are thriving thanks to community support. Skyline 1:1 technology initiative In fall 2015, every Skyline High School student was given the opportunity to use a Lenovo Yoga Thinkpad at school and at home during the school year. Funding for the initiative came from bond dollars earmarked for technology. Students and parents have embraced the initiative, and Principal Steven Green is optimistic about the initiative’s outcome. “Students are engaged in classroom learning experiences in different ways than without the devices,” he explains. “Access to higher-level questions and learning activities can occur, and students are assessed and held accountable in new ways.” All district secondary math students are also participating in 1:1 classroom technology initiatives this year, while Westwood High School will join Skyline in the take-home initiative next semester. Construction at Westwood and Dobson high schools Community members who’ve driven past Westwood or Dobson high schools recently may have noticed the campuses look a little different. At Dobson High School, a new two-story building is under construction in front of the current administration building. The building will house 32 classrooms and administrative offices. Construction is to be completed in January 2016, and the building is set to be in use by spring semester. At Westwood High School, the 600 building has been demolished to make way for a new two-story building that will house 25 classrooms, a media center and a commercial kitchen for the culinary program. Last fall, a 50-member think tank of students, administrators, teachers, district-level staff and community members recommended the new building, which will be ready for students by the 2016-17 school year. “We’re excited,” Principal Shawn Lynch says. “This will help us keep moving our culture of success forward.” 34
