With less than a month to go before light rail arrives in downtown Mesa, officials are working to make the city’s core a destination rather than just a stop along the way.

Mesa has partnered with the Neighborhood Economic Development Corp. and the Downtown Mesa Association to implement a series of experimental projects nicknamed the Downtown Mesa Laboratory that will tackle everything from extra-wide alleys to outdated colonnades.

The projects are meant to be “temporary, low cost and high impact,” and to serve as tests for future investment in downtown, according to the city.

“The things that work well, we’ll look to see how we can make those permanent. And the things that don’t, we can get rid of, because it didn’t cost much to do,” said Augie Gastelum, executive director for NEDCO. “That’s the beauty of this — we don’t have to carry out extensive, long studies when we can just test something out in a low-risk way.”

The projects, funded primarily through money leftover from NEDCO’s light-rail-construction business-assistance program, will fall into one of four categories.

The first and most comprehensive, sidewalk and streetscape beautification, will focus on downtown Mesa’s visual appeal, especially along Main Street.

Potential strategies range from adding art installations, murals and landscaping to updating the design of colonnades. Together, those additions are expected to cost about $30,000, according to a preliminary budget breakdown.

Next, way-finding projects will highlight downtown attractions such as the Mesa Arts Center, museums and eateries “by using fun and creative directional signage,” according to Niel Curley, a Mesa management assistant.

Options include sidewalk stickers, window coverings and updated business directories and would require about $10,000.

over certain alleyways that feed into Main Street to create a more pedestrianfriendly atmosphere, to the tune of about $5,000. The first alley to be revamped is the one between Milano Music Center and the Castle on Main wedding and event venue.

“What we’re looking to do here is really draw people in and give them an excuse to linger in downtown Mesa after they’ve gone to a restaurant, seen a show at the MAC or gone to one of the museums,” Curley said. “We’re looking at programming some of these alleys with some lounge seating, making it really inviting and comfortable for folks to have a hang-out space.”

Last, “place-making” projects will aim to inject unique elements into the city center.

“We kind of call them these ‘moments of discovery,’ where people would be walking downtown and really be surprised that they would find maybe a

green space in a parking space or ... creative seating options,” Curley said.

Those efforts could cost about $4,000.

City Council members largely complimented the plan when Curley presented it at a July study session, applauding the alley-makeover concept in particular.

“We have such wide alleys and it makes sense to have those alleyways as something other than just vehicular traffic,” Councilman Kevin Thompson said.

Councilman David Luna said the transformation would make it so back streets were no longer a “nefarious place” but rather “a great place for people to gather together.”

Mayor John Giles did have one reservation.

“I’m not a big fan of the colonnades, I have to tell you,” he said. “I’m a big fan of shade, don’t get me wrong, but I think the colonnades kind of hide this really cool, authentic, 100-year-old downtown we

have with this stucco, 1970s-esque structure.”

While Giles didn’t appear to oppose temporarily sprucing up the colonnades, he urged city staff to discuss offering incentives to business owners to replace them with more attractive shade structures.

Gastelum, the NEDCO executive director, said that sort of feedback is exactly what development officials will be looking for throughout the Downtown Laboratory test phase, expected to last through the winter.

“We’re doing doing some projects right out of the gate just so that people can see what we’re talking about with some of these ideas, but after the lightrail opening celebration, there will be a much more extensive community-outreach component,” he said. “So, the (more permanent) things that get done will be the things that people in the community are asking for.”

Thanks to a parent who questioned tradition, Mesa residents have won the right to speak out at school board meetings — even if their topics are not listed on agendas.

The Mesa Public Schools governing board voted unanimously in favor of a new policy that allows parents and other members of the public to speak for up to three minutes on any district issue they wish.

Despite some restrictions, Tracy Langston, parent of a Westwood High School student, said she was "grateful" to the board for the unanimous vote Tuesday. "I think this will be a real win-win for the board and for the community," said Langston, whose activism led to the change.

State law does not require that school boards have open comment periods.

Mesa has not included open calls to the public on its meeting agendas in recent memory. Superintendent Michael Cowan, who has been with the district for 27 years, can't remember the district ever having them. The historical reason is unknown.

But most large Valley school districts -- including Chandler, Dysart, Gilbert, Glendale Union, Higley, Kyrene, Paradise Valley, Peoria, Phoenix Union, Scottsdale and Tempe Union -- do schedule time regularly for parents to voice things on their minds.

Issues that often come up in public comment at other districts include suggestions for curriculum changes, ideas for new classroom or extracurricular programs, praise for teachers or other school staffers or complaints about costs and fees.

Why it happened Langston began pushing for the open comment time earlier this summer after she learned that the district was fairly unique in its policy not to have a public comment period. She said her goal was simple — to get Mesa schools to adopt a public comment policy that is similar to those of surrounding school districts.

"I think this will be a real win-win for the board and for the community."

"By not having an open call to the public, you are missing the chance to hear in a timely manner about issues that are important to the community," she told board members at an earlier meeting.

At first, board members were not certain the proposal was a good idea.

They expressed concern that unlimited public comment would drag out meetings and be ultimately unproductive.

"When community members want to speak to us they have direct lines of communication to us," board member Mike Nichols said. "I have even shared my phone number with community members."

Tammie Pursley, president of the Mesa Education Association, the district's chapter of the national teachers union, however, said she favored the proposal because "teachers would value the opportunity to speak at board meetings."

How to comment The new public comment period will last for 15 minutes and take place during one board meeting a month, starting Aug. 25. Speakers must fill out cards with their names before making their presentations.

The policy limits topics to "issues within the jurisdiction of the board."

Even if someone brings up a great idea during open comment, board members will not be able to take action on it immediately. State law only allows board members to vote on items that are listed on agendas.

Still, the new policy will allow board and district staff members to discuss and take future action on suggestions.

They also will be allowed to respond to criticism brought up during the open comment period.

The new policy also cautions members of the public that they could be held liable if they defame anyone while making public comments at board meetings.

Margaret T. Hance Park, a Phoenix hub of cultural institutions and outdoor space, is foregoing green grass and community events this summer for improvements aimed at preventing damage to the freeway tunnel below it.

The Arizona Department of Transportation is in the midst of a $1.86 million project to upgrade the underground drainage system, affecting parts of the 32-acre park near downtown. Hance Park sits over the Interstate 10 Deck Park Tunnel, which this week celebrated its 25th anniversary of being open.

But for years, water has dripped from the park into the tunnel, according to ADOT spokesman Doug Nintzel. The agency’s project — which started at the end of May and is expected to run through October — intends to improve runoff collection to protect the equipment operating the tunnel’s lighting and ventilation.

“It’s been a nuisance over time,” he

wrote in an e-mail.

The park’s location poses unique challenges for the city, which has to coordinate with ADOT to make sure proposed changes or large events don’t affect the infrastructure below. Construction on the drainage system was originally scheduled for last summer but was postponed to give the city and other affected groups more time to plan.

And though stakeholders have coordinated throughout the process, the project already has caused disruptions for users of the park.

Most noticeably for visitors, areas of Hance Park’s green turf have turned yellow, said Cynthia Aguilar, deputy director of the Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department downtown division. Irrigation was cut off in parts to prevent water from interfering with ADOT’s installation of a barrier system.

Other parts of the park are torn up by trenches dug to add perforated pipes.

Trees were removed and walls were taken down, though public access still is available in most areas.

The project was scheduled for the

summer to minimize disruptions to park visitors and events during busier months.

“It’s just problematic to get around certain parts of the park,” Aguilar said.

The cost of repairing the impacts of construction will be reimbursed by ADOT, according to the city. The park is the focus of a new master plan that intends to change its design, but restoration will re-create how it looked before construction.

“We’re replacing like for like right now,” Aguilar said.

City and cultural organizations around the park also are affected by the project, including Burton Barr Central Library and the Japanese Friendship Garden of Phoenix.

ADOT crews will need to access infrastructure under the library, Aguilar said, though construction will be limited to outside its hours of operation. The garden prepared for months for construction, which started after it closed for its normal summer break, Executive Director Mary Murphy-Bessler said.

About 15 to 20 specialty pine trees gardened in the bonsai style were boxed beginning in March to avoid losing years of work when they were removed during construction, she said. The organization intends to replant them when the project is complete.

“Those are almost near impossible to be re-created,” Murphy-Bessler said.

Temporary irrigation was installed in part of the garden to mitigate impacts on other plants, she said, but a section of a signature walkway will have to be repoured.

“There’s a lot of attention to detail, as a Japanese garden demands,” MurphyBessler said.

She said the garden lost a handful of visitors from special summer tours but is mainly concerned with restoring the site before reopening in October, the height of its wedding season. The garden coordinated with ADOT and the city to ensure the six-week repair period would start on time.

The next phase of construction will soon move into the east side of the park, Aguilar said.

The Boulders Resort & Spa will get its first major face-lift this fall, but the inspiration behind the designs will stay close to the Hohokam ancestral land’s ancient roots, resort representatives and designers said.

The renovations come as the resort switches management affiliations from Waldorf Astoria to the Curio Collection, both under the Hilton Hotels umbrella, and will be the first major changes to the property’s design since its original construction in the 1980s. New designs will feature natural materials in colors prevalent in Native American art with special emphasis on the Hohokam, the land’s original residents, Deborah Bridges, the resort’s spokeswoman, said.

That’s not to say that the resort looks like a time capsule from the decade of glam rock and big hair. Local legend has it that the property’s original designer lived on the land for an entire year before building to gain an intimate understanding of how the sunlight interacted with its trademark boulders. Even now, its low, rounded buildings in stone and wood blend into the surrounding rocks.

The only true vestige of the 1980s can be found in the old Hollywood makeup mirrors in the guest bathrooms.

The resort will renovate all 160 of its guest rooms — or casitas, as it calls them — by this fall, and its most popular restaurant, Palo Verde, and lobby lounge by December. It will also add a ballroom with a spacious patio and fireplace that extend toward a waterfall and pool situated behind the main building. The resort’s two golf courses and spa will stay unchanged, Bridges said.

The bathroom makeup mirrors in the guest rooms will disappear to make way for an open floor plan with a floating vanity, and glass and stone shower. The bedrooms’ wood-burning fireplaces get an adobe update and each room will include a wood-inlay headboard in a traditional Hohokam design.

The wood-inlay projects are one of the design team’s favorite touches, said lead designer June Chun. The team visited the Heard Museum to learn about the history of the elements they wanted to incorporate, including wood pieces and color accents in teal and burnt orange.

While the renovations aren’t rebranding or reinventing the resort, General Manager Howard Harris sees the changes as an opportunity to appeal to new customers and markets as well as improve the resort for returning customers.

“So much of what our guests feel here is about health and wellness and the experience of being in nature, not being in a high rise ... and that’s what The Boulders is,” he said. “It’s such an iconic hotel.

People have heard about it from all over the world.”

The resort hopes the facelift will bring in more guests starting this travel season. Mayor Les Petersonof Carefree agrees, as many visitors to The Boulders make the short drive into the town’s charismatic center.

“The additional people brought to the Foothills area because of this renovation are very welcomed,” he said.

Vintage costume jewelry can be very desirable in the secondary market.

Can costume jewelry be a hidden investment?

If you’re like most people who are downsizing or cleaning house, and you come across a drawer full of costume jewelry, your first reaction may be that it’s cheap and worthless.

Not so fast! This style of vintage ornamentation, which originated in the 1920s and exploded in the 1950s, could be worth a lot of money, depending on the workmanship and materials used.

I recently visited a prospective client to inspect a house full of items and to assess the goods’ value for one of our upcoming auctions. On the kitchen table was a pile of costume jewelry that the homeowner was going to donate because she thought it was worthless.

I quickly scanned through what she had, and I started pulling out pieces that weren’t, in fact, cheap costume jewelry but actually well known brands. Some even used 14-karat gold in the construction of the jewelry pieces.

When I asked how she got this jewelry collection, she told me that most of it was handed down to her from her mother and grandmother, and she thought it would be considered outdated junk jewelry.

She was excited when I told her that some of her pieces could be worth several hundred dollars.

With costume jewelry, it doesn’t have to be made of gold to be valuable. An-

tique and vintage costume jewelry can be very desirable on the secondhand market. We have sold single pieces of costume jewelry with no gold content for hundreds of dollars.

Finding out if you have valuable costume jewelry may not be easy to the untrained eye. The first thing to look for is a jewelry mark. Most high-quality costume jewelry items will have the company name or stamp somewhere on the jewelry. Trifari, Wiess, Coco Chanel and Monet are a few of the higher end costume jewelry makers, and identifying the marks can be difficult to find without a jeweler’s loop.

Also, when you inspect the jewelry, check if it has a green residue or the finish is delaminating. If so, its value is probably low.

Finally, examine the back of it, and look carefully at the design details. If it is sloppy or running together, it most likely is cheap, but if it’s clean and it has clear detail to it, then the quality may be higher. If you’re unsure, your best bet is to take your jewelry to a reputable expert who can assess its value and suggest options for selling it.

An ode to Goldy We’re a sporty family; a baseball family, really. My son and daughter play baseball and softball, and my wife and I are fortunate enough to coach them, at least for their regular Little League teams. Although my son is 9 years old, he’s also in the club baseball deal so I’ve had to hand him off to real coaches for that, which makes me feel like that one Greenday song, “Good Riddance,” about how I hope you had the time of your life.

At any rate, I feel fortunate for a lot of things related to the kids’ baseball and softball experiences, but one of the coolest things has to be how lucky we are to be living in Arizona right now. We’re lucky to have the Diamondbacks as our local team, and it is incredible that we’re here during the Paul Goldschmidt era.

Kids have heroes. They look up to people like they were gods. For sporty kids like ours, often that means athletes. — And that can be a mixed bag.

For example, when I was a kid, my favorite player was Oakland A’s slugger Jose Canseco. He once sent his identical twin brother to pretend to be him and fight in a celebrity boxing match. Lots to unpack there, but the take away is that he was probably not the world’s best role model, and perhaps that’s why I have trust issues, and why I don’t feel love.

In contrast, kids growing up in Arizona right now have Paul Goldschmidt to look up to. Or Goldy, as he’s known.

Don’t underestimate the power of a solid nickname. I’ve been trying to get people to call me “The Duke” for 20 years (always with “the” as part of if, as in “Hey The Duke, what’s up today?”). I’d be 25 percent cooler if my nickname was The Duke.

Goldy couldn’t be cooler than he already is because he’s that cool; maximum cool. I won’t go into all his amazingness here, but here are some highlights: » By virtually any measurement, he’s one of the five best players in all of baseball. » He’s humble, down to Earth, and by all accounts, just a super guy. » He signs autographs constantly, before every game. » And people generally say he’s the

My favorite anecdote about him is that even after he got hit by a pitch on the hand last year and was forced to sit out the last two months of the season, he’d still come out on the field and flip balls to the coach who would hit balls to the team during pre-game practice.

So he’s really great. Impossibly, absurdly great. Like Regis hosting that Millionaire gameshow great. And Arizona kids have the opportunity to have him as their hero. They should all get on board.

I almost feel bad for the other Diamondbacks who are getting hosed out of being thousands of kids’ favorite players.

David Peralta has a remarkable story of how he made it to the big leagues, working at a McDonald’s at one point to make ends meet to keep his baseball dream alive.

Josh Collmenter was the Opening Day starting pitcher, and has Taylor Swift for his walk up music when he bats. And Jake Lamb is a natural hero for kids as he himself appears to be no more than 11 years old and could probably help the kids with all their Minecraft garbage.

But it’s tough for any of them to beat out Goldy. He is literally everything you look for in a childhood hero and role model. He’s my son’s favorite player. If he came into our house and stole my electronics and family, but he gave me a signed Goldy Fathead, I’d probably be okay with it.

He’s that good. Our kids are lucky to have him, and we are, too.

Mesa veterans parade now same day as Phoenix The East Valley Veterans Day Parade in Mesa, which formerly was held the Saturday before Veterans Day, will now be held concurrently to the Phoenix Veterans Day Parade on Nov. 11. Pho 68 owner Michael Ha grew up watching his grandparents, and then parents, run their Vietnamese restaurants in Vancouver, Wash., learning over the years how to perfect the aromatic, delicate broth that pho soup is known for.

The beef soup bones, onion, ginger, star anise, salt and fish sauce bubble for hours before deemed ready for service.

Ha watched until it was his turn, opening his incarnation eight years ago at the northeast corner of Dobson and Warner roads in Chandler, attached to Lee Lee’s International Supermarket. The market and restaurants at these four corners — C Fu Gourmet, Chinese Magic Noodle House, Phoenix Palace, Pho 68, Lee’s Sandwiches and Shimogamo — are at the epicenter of the local Asian dining scene.

“It’s a definite bucket-list item to try a home-cooked-style bowl of Pho,” Ha says. “You have been missing out” if you haven’t tried it.

Ha must have just walked back from the produce aisle before he prepared an order of Goi Cuon ($4.68), three crisp, cool fresh spring rolls loaded with chard pork, cooked shrimp, a large pinch of romaine lettuce and a bit of fresh basil rolled in a translucent rice noodle skin.

The pink and white flesh of the shrimp is

visible through the noodle. Three plump cigar-size spring rolls arrive room temperature, though the greens are cooler than that, along with a small, warm cup of sweet peanut sauce for drizzling. I could make a meal of just the rolls and love the crunch, clean flavors and freshness of it all.

Of course, we had to try Pho 68’s namesake soup, No. 15 Pho Tai, Chin, Bo Vien ($6.68) and No. 18 Pho Tai ($6.68).

These sound complicated in name, but are straight-forward delicious bowls of steaming goodness. About four cups of the salty, yummy broth holds about a cup and a half of pure-white long rice noodles in each bowl. The No. 18 includes a generous portion of thin slices of eye of round beef steak. The No. 15 includes the eye of round steak along with fattier but more flavorful beef brisket pieces and grilled pork meatballs. But what might be my favorite part of the experience is the side of fresh mung bean sprouts, sliced jalapeĂą os, lime wedges and sprigs of basil, all served raw and fresh. Add as much or as little as you like to the piping-hot bowl of soup.

You can control how much heat you want from the jalapeĂą os, crunch and flavor from the bean sprouts, acidity from the lime and wonderful basil aromatics. I dump the whole lot in the bowl and lap up every last drop and morsel. So good.

Because of Lee Leeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s extensive seafood department, Ha also recommends dishes from that part of the menu. He takes a whole tilapia fish and deep-fries it for Ca Chien Sot Ca ($11.98), the crispy fish resting on a platter dressed with simple tomato sauce, sliced onions and steamed white rice. In Do Bien Xao Thap Cam ($11.98), fresh black mussels are sauteed with shrimp, squid, onions and green peppers and paired with steamed rice. The mussels open and release briny seawater that flavors everything.

Husband-and-wife restaurateurs Christodoulos Komitis and Penelope Acosta-Komitis, the duo behind Cyprus Grill in Chandler, are taking East Valley residents on a new culinary journey with their latest venture.

This summer, the couple opened the Ivy Mediterranean Lounge at the Shops at Pecos Ranch. With sleek furnishings and decor, a full bar and 3,500-squarefoot patio, the restaurant flaunts a vibe that’s more upscale, hip and geared toward the happy hour and dinner crowd than Cyprus Grill, a casual Greek-centric spot.

Ivy’s menu features Mediterranean dishes inspired by Christodoulos’ homeland of Cyprus, as well as traditional fare.

Penelope, a native of Mexico, talks about their new spot and its food.

Qu e s t i o n : What is the inspiration for the Ivy? An s w e r : We are definitely inspired by the Mediterranean as a location, its food, its people. It’s really a place we love. And the name “Ivy,” it was short and catchy.

Q: How does Ivy differ from Cyprus Grill?

A: Cyprus Grill is the quintessential lunch spot, fast, convenient. We really catered to the busy lunch crowd and the menu is authentic Greek specializing in pitas and fresh salads. The Ivy Mediterranean Lounge has more of a casual upscale ambience, a fabulous patio, great bar area and our menu includes different flavors of the Mediterranean, not just Greek.

Q: So, there’s a difference between true Mediterranean cuisine and many people’s experiences with Greek food?

A: Yes. Mediterranean encompasses several different countries including Greece, Italy, France, Spain, Israel, Lebanon, etc. All of those countries have their specific dishes, but they fall within the Mediterranean umbrella.

Q: The menu features authentic dishes from Cyprus, but also salads, burgers and pita sandwiches. How did you give those a hometown twist?

A: We worked very hard on our menu, we really wanted to experiment a little bit more with Ivy by including other flavors. We like the balance of Mediterranean dishes with mainstream items. Our hometown twist is in how we prepare everything fresh, seeking the best ingredients.

Q: Where do the recipes come from?

A: A lot of them are family recipes.

My mother-in-law has taught us a lot. She is really an inspiration. We are also inspired by the places we like to go, our team of chefs… it’s really a group effort.

Q: Are there any longtime family recipes or dishes on the menu?

A: The lamb chops and our lamb souvlaki plate.

Q: What are your favorites?

A: I have to say that the (sear-roasted Chilean) sea bass (with cilantro orange salsa) is extraordinary. It’s really my favorite thing.

Q: Do you do a dish that is hard to find here in the Valley?

A: I would say that I haven’t had lamb in any other restaurant here like the one we make at our restaurants. Lamb is expensive and hard to cook but, done well, is really superb.

Q: Your beer selection includes several by local breweries. Was that a conscious decision?

A: Yes, supporting local products is very important to us as we understand the impact that has in our local economy.

We have great breweries and we want to showcase their product. People love local.

Q: Tequila, gin and whiskey don’t usually come to mind when people think of Mediterranean cocktails, yet you have an interesting list that features these spirits. How did you come up with them?

A: Well, tequila, gin and whiskey are enjoyed all over the world. I think there is a very interesting movement in the bar scene with the rise of mixologists. People love unique drinks and, as a restaurant, you have to be able to offer something unique and special so people come back.

Q: For anyone who has never really experienced authentic eastern Mediterranean cuisine, what dishes do you suggest they start with?

A: Hummus is always a good start.

Our gyro pita serves as a great introduction to our cuisine, as well as our spanakopita (spinach pie).

Q: What’s your idea of a perfect meal from start to finish?

A: If it’s at the Ivy, it will definitely start with a beautiful bottle of Pinot noir and the shrimp and eggplant appetizer (sauteed shrimp over breaded eggplant with a creamy, spicy marinara). For my main course, it will be sea bass and I will finish it off with a nice espresso and a little bit of tiramisu. Good food, good conversation and laughter are musts in my perfect meal experience.

Lou Malnatiâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Piz z eria to open in Phoenix area Chicago transplant Marc Jacobs and his wife, Christianne, are as excited as anyone that Lou Malnatiâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Pizzeria is planning on opening a branch in metro Phoenix next spring.

While the company is still in the location-scouting phase, Jacobs says he is â&#x20AC;&#x153;salivating awaiting the news,â&#x20AC;? with extra hope the store will be in his Scottsdale neighborhood. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We are very excited to think that Louâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s would finally open a location here,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll get our sleeping bags out and camp out if (we know) where (to go).â&#x20AC;?

Earlier this summer, a representative for Malnati Organization Inc. said the company had planned to set its first Arizona shop â&#x20AC;&#x153;in the next few years.â&#x20AC;?

But now, it looks like fans such as Jacobs wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have to wait so long for the famous deep-dish pies.

The company operates more than 40 locations, and this would be the first store outside of Illinois.

Wherever the store ends up, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a coup for pizza-loving connoisseurs Valley-wide, since Lou Malnatiâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s has been a Midwest institution since Lou and his wife, Jean, opened their first pizzeria in 1971. Malnati had actually been working in the industry since the 1940s, perfecting what was his longtime family recipe.

Malnati died in 1978, but the tradition continues under his sons. And it stays true to the core style of California vineripened tomatoes, a proprietary seasoned sausage blend, fresh mozzarella cheese from the same dairy that has supplied the restaurant for more than four decades, and the flaky, buttery crust that is a particular hallmark.

Scottsdale breakfast spot reopens as Urbane Manner BRKFST is now Urbane Manner, and while breakfast is still served, you canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t get it at breakfast time. Got that?

Owner Nicholas Lee has rebranded the concept he opened in April in the former American Junkie space on 75th Street south of Camelback Road, in Scottsdale. Now, the restaurant is limited to brunch from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekends, with the joint operating as a nightclub from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. weekends.

The place is already hopping, with DJs spinning tunes, but a grand opening party is slated for Saturday, Aug. 15.

Cave Creek Tap House to become Roadhouse Owners Mark Bradshaw and Jim Oâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Toole are turning off the taps at their beloved Tap Haus in Cave Creek. But fear not, beer and bike lovers.

The bar and eatery is being renovated, expanded and renamed Roadhouse to include not only food and craft beer, but a museum of sorts featuring vintage motorcycles, plus a bike parts and accessories shop.

Roadhouse will debut in October with more than 8,000 square feet of space, including roll-up garage doors opening onto Cave Creek Road.

Snooze, an A.M, Eatery is anything but a sleepy restaurant chain.

The trendy Denver-based breakfast brand is set to open another new restaurant in August. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the second in the last two months, having debuted in downtown Gilbert in July.

The latest location is coming to Kierland Commons in northeast Phoenix. A grand-opening celebration is planned for the first two days, Aug. 26-27, when the restaurant will host a fundraiser for the McDowell Mountain Conservancy and Whispering Hope Ranch Foundation.

Snoozeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s menu includes French toast with mascarpone cheese and salted caramel, chilaquiles eggs Benedict, pickyour-own pancake flight and breakfast pot pie topped with rosemary sausage gravy. It also has a full bar, serving breakfast cocktails such as mimosas, bloody Marys and â&#x20AC;&#x153;brewmosas,â&#x20AC;? wheat beer and orange juice.

The first Snooze opened in Colorado in 2006. The brand expanded to Arizona in 2013, when it opened at the Shops at Town & Country in Phoenix. That store was followed by one in Tempe at College Avenue and Sixth Street near Arizona

Let's face facts. It is apparent that there is more importance on winning an election and staying in office than for the safety of its citizens.

Common sense laws endorsed by responsible gun owners have no chance of passage as long as GOP state legislators are cozy with NRA cash for politicians who promote their agenda at any cost ... including the loss of lives via gunfire.

These are the same politicians who

are in office to serve the public, NOT themselves.

ID law results are ludicrous I was recently denied service when attempting to purchase two bottles of beer. I am a 31 year old who was carrying valid ID. I was in the company of my brother who was born in 1989. He has lived abroad for the past several years and has not yet switched to a horizontal license.

I was denied service on the basis that I might share my purchase with a 26 year old who holds a vertical license.

When SB 1397 was signed into law, it

became illegal to purchase alcohol using an ID issued before an individual's 21st birthday. I find it absurd that Arizona will not acknowledge an unexpired driver's license with date of birth as proof of an individual's age if the license is vertically oriented.

It was argued that this law would make it more difficult for underage individuals to purchase alcohol; however, the law has created ludicrous scenarios for out-of-state individuals, returning expatriates and military personnel — all of whom must find alternate forms of identification if they have not updated their licenses while away.

This law reflects the worst type of fussy overregulation and ought to be re-

pealed.

VA nonsense just continues I am furious. My 92-year-old roommate had made an appointment three months ago to see his doctor.

Last week, he received a “you have an appointment” card from the VA, reminding him of the date and time. All well.

On the date of his appointment, he gets a call from the VA. Doctor will not be available, come back in September.

When is this nonsense going to stop?

When are we going to see some improvements? Disappointed ... once again.

There is a deal with Iran.

Politics aside, it presents an opportunity to determine whether a religious leader should be involved in supporting or undermining a decision that affects international relationships.

After all, politics and religion certainly do not mix.

Spiritual leaders should relegate their thoughts and actions to matters that affect the moral aspect of human behavior.

When man’s attention is directed toward death and destruction, we clergy should stand up for decency and human survival.

Now, we are presented with a dilemma. In recent months we have been inundated with news of a nuclear deal with Iran. The drama is one made for movies.

First it was happening, then it was not.

The terms changed and then they did not.

On the surface, the details did not seem important. The simple truth is, it is the right thing to do given the numerous countries already possessing this ultimate weapon of mass destruction.

We are faced with a totally different issue. The issue staring us in the face is whom we are negotiating with. If we review the history of Iran we will find, since 1979, a country that has dedicated itself to tyranny and threats of genocide against others who disagree with its brand of civilization. The world knows this, but still hopes for a brightness to glow at the end of the tunnel of a global darkness destined to engulf the world.

From a religious point of view, there is no other solution than to rely on our faith to supply the answers we seek. Do we criticize our president? Do we condemn, given the information we are privy to? Do we lift our voices as one and declare that humanities struggle demands steadfastness and determination?

The questions are endless and are as unnerving as the answers we hear. But, questions lead to answers. While we may not agree with all the solutions being offered, we should be remembering that God gave us the ability to determine our own destiny. We can and should ask for guidance, but the final decision rests with us. To me, the answer is extraordinarily easy. Survival should not be negotiable.

Survival depends on our willingness to confront the issues, not hide from them.

Iran has told us numerous times and in many ways that they proudly support terrorism, territorial expansion and developing weaponry that will eventually cause more havoc than all of the wars fought previously.

Closing our eyes and believing that all will be right with the world is a fantasy.

In many scriptural writings the subject of “turning the other cheek” is described in different ways. This expression was not designed to make us cowards or give others an opportunity to destroy us, but rather to teach that giving the benefit of the doubt is not necessarily the answer to life-threatening situations.

Looking at the history of the human experience, we are exposed to extreme scenarios of “turning the other cheek.”

We can recall wars that were fought because steps were never taken to remove the threat. Hitler told the world exactly what he proposed to do. He performed the most heinous acts of horror leading to the eventual death of 60 million people, six million guilty of nothing more than following a faith that existed for thousands of years, in the span of 12 years.

Was that not enough time to react and act?

Finally the world garnered the fortitude to confront this nightmare at a terrible cost. Could this have been avoided?

Here we are at similar crossroads.

Iran has told us numerous times and in many ways that they proudly support terrorism, territorial expansion and developing weaponry that will eventually cause more havoc than all of the wars fought previously. That is the short list.

Still we sit and deliberate? We make offers that create a new meaning to “turning the other cheek.” We will probably lose that cheek and more.

This time the world will be engulfed in a battle, not only of survival, but of universal existence. There is enough nuclear power to blow all of us away forever.

This is not a doomsday prediction, it is reality.

This is not venturing into politics. This is not positioning for attention. This is not posturing for misguided recognition.

This is a spiritual declaration for survival.
