hree truths describe Mesa Public Schools: we are student-centered, student-focused and student -responsive.

Meet the governing board Conozcan a la junta directiva Mike Hughes, father of five, has been president and CEO of A New Leaf since 1983 and has served on the governing board since 1994. A true community activist, he is on the board of directors of numerous organizations, including Mesa United Way and the Mesa Arts Academy.

Mike Nichols has been active in the Mesa community for many years. He was president of Pomeroy Elementary’s parent-teacher organization and co-chair of Mesa Parent Advocates for Quality Schools. The father of three children who attend or graduated from our schools, he has been on the governing board since 2009.

Steven Peterson, a CPA has been a governing board member since 2009. He has lived in Mesa for 12 years, during which he has been an active Westwood High School volunteer. He is on the board of Mesa Foundation for Educational Excellence. A father of eight, his children currently attend or graduated from Westwood High.

Gov. Jan Brewer appointed him to the Arizona State Dental Board in 2010.

oday they build robots for friendly competition. Tomorrow they are the world’s problem solvers. Mesa Public Schools robotics program’s mission is to unite purpose-driven students, teach them about engineering, science, technology and math (STEM), and ensure they have fun doing it.

The program, sponsored by the career and technical education department, enables students to expand their classroom knowledge by working side-by-side with adult mentors from engineering and technical professions. With financial support from industry partners such

as The Boeing Company, Cox, Microchip and Rural Electric, the program has grown significantly in the past two years to include robotics teams at Red Mountain, Skyline and Westwood high schools.

Last spring, the 40 members of Red Mountain’s Plasma Robotics received the Engineering Inspiration Award at the regional FIRST Robotics competition and qualified to participate in the world championship event. Skyline High School started its program four years ago with the help of several former Plasma Robotics team members and mentors. And at Westwood, a group of highly motivated students sought to revive a team that had been dormant for several years. It now has more than 60 members, making it one of the largest teams in Arizona. After a grand performance at the regional tournament, Westwood also earned a berth at the world championship.

are revealed in January, launching the six-week designand-build portion of the competition. After building their robots according to a required schedule, teams put them in sealed bags to await their regional competitions.

Last spring the championship was held in St. Louis, Mo. While the event is fiercely competitive, teams are encouraged to share their knowledge, experience and innovations with each other on and off the playing field. Mesa Public

Schools teams participated with a spirit of gracious professionalism and camaraderie.

This season teams are developing their leadership skills by expanding their collaboration efforts at the junior- and senior-high levels. By fostering mentoring relationships with district junior high schools through FIRST Lego League teams, high school teams encourage younger students to develop STEM skills, teamwork and the desire to become future team members.

With a smile Blevins shares, “It’s the most fun hard work you will ever love.”

Show & Tell

Meet Mya Parks Mya Parks is a gregarious eighth-grade bilingual student and class treasurer for the Kino Junior High student body. She started kindergarten at four and in her fourth-grade year had the opportunity to study abroad in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.

Her family travels have shaped her desire to continue experiencing the world and all it has to offer. This year her plans include scholastic endeavors and working on a school anti-bullying campaign, a topic that is close to her heart.

She shares, “It is something that no person should have to experience. Bullying is a chain reaction and it should end now!”

Parks is also encouraging her classmates to become more involved in school activities and is leading by example. When she is not busy with school choir and academics she enjoys cooking classes and mud-bogging with her brothers.

Her ultimate desire is to work with animals as a veterinarian.

Tia Torres from “Pit Bulls and Paroles” is her role model.

“I love how Tia takes an animal with a bad stigma for being a fighter, when it’s because it was raised poorly. Tia and her staff rehabilitate it and give the dog a second chance at a new life. My dream is to one day own a pet hospital, so I can help save the lives of animals,” says Parks.

Sus viajes familiares han dado forma a su deseo de continuar experimentando el mundo y todo lo que tiene que ofrecer. Este año sus planes incluyen esfuerzos escolásticos y trabajando en una campaña de lucha contra la intimidación escolar, un tema que está cerca de su corazón.

Meet Mana Azimi Conozcan a Mana Azimi Dobson High School junior Mana Azimi is a long-time student of the piano. Songs with piano parts are rare in the orchestra yet she longed to be more involved. Three years ago her orchestra director suggested she learn to play the harp. Striking a chord with Azimi, her ardor for this incredible instrument was born. • Azimi believes playing the piano accelerated her growth to more challenging songs on the harp. And this 16-year-old never misses a day of practice. She does not have a harp at home, so every free moment is spent in the practice room at school honing her skills. • Azimi shares, “Having the opportunity to learn this instrument makes me feel lucky!” • At the end of her freshman year Azimi was invited to play with the Mesa Harp Ensemble and after two short years was awarded first chair at the 2014 All State Music Festival. • She admits, “A rigorous academic schedule along with both the piano and the harp can be exhausting, but I learned that sticking to an organized schedule is the key to survival. Music is my passion and now I have the opportunity to play one of the most beautiful sounding instruments in the world. I would love to continue playing the harp in college.”

Mana Azimi, estudiante junior de la Escuela Dobson High y estudia el piano de hace mucho tiempo. Ensuring the safety and security of all Mesa Public Schools students, teachers and staff is a round-the-clock operation for the school safety and security department. As an integral part of the school staff their objective is to provide a safe learning environment and to ensure students and parents comply with truancy laws.

Supporting District security officers’ primary safe learning responsibility is to provide firstenvironments response support to elementary schools, actively patrol each campus to deter criminal activity and notify police when necessary. Uniformed officers in marked security vehicles patrol the entire district, which encompasses 82 schools and 1,400 acres of property. Serving as a liaison with local law enforcement officials, they report incidents, respond to strangers on campus, deal with custody disputes and assist with lockdowns and evacuations.

“The greatest benefit of having security officers on school campuses is the bridges that are built between the students and the police,” acknowledges Allen Moore, director of school safety and security.

Staying on the path to success

Junior high and high schools have campus-level security along with School Resource Officers (SROs), who are sworn city police officers.

Moore says, “When SROs foster an environment where students and parents feel comfortable approaching and speaking with the police officer, information will be shared that may not have been shared before.

That information, be it about a fight, bullying or other issues that hinder a safe school environment, is often how acts of violence are prevented.

“Student officer relationships are key to helping at-risk students succeed by keeping them on the right path and preventing truancy. When interventions do not work the next steps are warnings and court referrals, followed by partnering with court judges to hold students accountable for attendance and grades.

We monitor them closely with follow-up court visits,” adds Moore.

A visit to a school campus will reveal visible security updates, including increased fencing around the school perimeter. This fencing ensures all visitors enter through the front office. Enhanced camera systems at schools alert district security staff to potential issues, day or night.

New security tecnology advances safety

The new visitor management system on elementary campuses streamlines the check-in process, replacing sign-in sheets and logbooks. Parents and visitors check in at a kiosk. Adults swipe their driver’s license, the built-in camera snaps a picture, and a temporary visitor’s sticker is printed. The system automatically logs the visit and can alert staff of any security risks.

Redbird Elementary School principal Nicolas Parker attests, “It makes our lives at Redbird Elementary School easier because it records information right to the computer. We can immediately account for a parent helping out in a classroom or participating in a parent class. Our parents love the system because once they are trained, it is easy to use.”

Moore points out, “Security is everyone’s responsibility. With the students, parents, staff and police working together, we can ensure our campuses are safe.”

The traditional focus on reading, writing, and simple arithmetic has shifted toward these areas of study at the elementary and secondary levels.

Why STEM in Mesa?

Mesa Public Schools’ mission is to prepare every student for college and a competitive career market, bringing more hands-on, problem-based learning from all STEM areas into the classroom. Instruction rich in science, technology, engineering and mathematics is leading the way to an exciting future for Mesa students.

A wealth of opportunity is being offered to all students, including Project Lead the Way Engineering courses and LEGO robotics teams at our junior high schools. Red Mountain High School offers a STEM Diploma Program, an advanced diploma which offers specialized classes and training in such fields as biomedical, biotechnology, engineering and robotics.

hat’s a question many Mesa Public Schools students can confidently answer, thanks to our robust Career and Technical Education (CTE) program.

“It’s a far cry from the vocational education track some may remember from their own school days,” says Marlo Loria, director of career and technical education.

Its newfound focus stems from a 2008 mandate by the Arizona State Board of Education that all Arizona students in grades nine through 12 complete an Education and Career Action Plan (ECAP) that helps them identify their career aspirations and the necessary high school and college coursework that will help them accomplish their goal.

Exploration starts early

Mesa Public Schools starts the process in seventh grade, offering a career exploration class that helps students develop their ECAPs. In eighth grade, all students take the ACT Explore test which includes a career inventory section. Schools send a letter to every parent letting them know the results. Eighth graders and their parents are also invited to the district’s “Explore What’s in Store” fair, at which major companies and higher education representatives offer career previews and explain what coursework is necessary to prepare for them. The event at the Mesa Convention Center attracts thousands of students and parents.

Junior high students use their ECAPs to help them select CTE electives in subjects like computer technology, construction technologies, culinary arts, design and merchandising, education professions, engineering, health science and many others. High schools offer an expanded variety of 21 CTE programs that include plant or animal systems agricultural science, sports medicine and rehab services, biomedical sciences, biotechnology, industrial technology, information technology, automotive or welding technologies and construction/cabinetmaking technologies.

rista Procopio, a graduate of Red Mountain High School’s biotechnology program, credits her former CTE teachers with starting her on the path to her current career as a business development manager for Redox Diagnostics, a Phoenix company that developed and patented a new test for early detection of Alzheimer’s disease.

The test is currently undergoing preclinical trials.

During her second year in the CTE program, Procopio was accepted into the internship program at Barrow Neurological Institute. She researched Alzheimer’s and discovered a passion that continued through her college years and into her current position.

Con sólo 24 años, Foreman parti- cipió en varios trabajos de perfil alto que conllevaron a su contratación en Google, en donde ayuda a crear nuevas plataformas de aplicaciones, para después capacitar a promotores externos para que las vendan. Su carrera lo ha llevado por todo el mundo y le ha permitido desarrollar una red profesional muy amplia que sabe con confianza que lo llevará a ocupar puestos de mayor responsabilidad dentro y fuera de Google.

“CTE fue el cerillo que encendió el fuego”, dice Foreman. “Esa clase, además de tener a un mentor sensacional, Ken Jaycock, (maestro de CTE), me abrió las puertas a un nuevo mundo.”

He instructs a long list of subjects including math, woodworking, electronics, automotives, welding, manufacturing, economics and video game development.

“Career and technical education (CTE) programs allow us to find kids jobs. Welding is the class students choose if they are looking for a career, not just a job,” says Drobitsky.

“I have the best job on the planet and cannot believe they pay me to come here,” Drobitsky says. “I too am a student in my classroom and enjoy learning from my students. But the best part of teaching is when I see the light bulb come on for a student and he grins and says, ‘I get it!’

“I love when former students thank me for teaching them something they are using to create their career. My goal is to help them become happy, productive citizens and I often tell my students if you aren’t having fun you are doing something wrong.”

While culinary, welding and automotive are the most popular choices, all programs are growing. The agricultural specialties lead the expansion, and the veterinary technologist program is also popular because it combines students’ love of animals with something that’s hands-on.

A growing program Mesa students are responding to the chance to preview what their future career might look like. Nearly 12,800 were enrolled in CTE programs last school year.

In Mesa High graduate Richie Foreman’s case, a CTE class in interviewing, resume writing and networking, coupled with an expertise in computer software development, enabled him to land a dream job with Google in New York City, where he’s an enterprise engineer.

At just 24, Foreman has already held a series of highprofile jobs that led him to Google, where he helps build new application platforms, then trains external developers so they can effectively sell them. His career has taken him all over the world and allowed him to develop a large professional network that he is confident will lead to progressively more responsible positions within and outside of Google.

“CTE was the match that lit the fire,” Foreman says.

“That one class, plus having a wonderful mentor in [CTE teacher] Ken Jaycock, pushed me through the doors and gave me a stage.”

He spends countless hours taking his students to welding competitions across the state and sacrificed his summer to plan and implement our first welding certification camp. He works with our CTE math specialists and Skyline physics teachers to ensure his curriculum is relevant and rigorous for his students. Everything he does is to provide more opportunities for his kids, so they will graduate high school not only with the knowledge, but the skills to become productive members of our society.”

xtracurricular activity state tax credit contributions (ECA) support student involvement, helping them develop qualities such as leadership, teamwork and cooperation.

Last year donors generously supported schools with more than $2 million in ECA donations. The monies help supplement students’ educational experiences. From books for after-school literacy programs, musical instruments, math clubs and field trips to cameras for yearbook clubs, after school sports and registrations fees for spelling, math and geography bees—ECA makes a difference in a student’s educational experience.

“The majority of students at Mesa High are on a free- and reduced-price meal plan, making it a challenge to raise funds to provide our cadets with the same opportunities as a school from a stronger economic base,” says retired Lt. Col. Brian Walker, senior aerospace science instructor. “These young men and women are eager to participate in the JROTC activities that develop good citizenship. ECA contributions greatly enrich the lives of our students, and we appreciate the kindness of those participating.”

This tax credit is available to all qualifying Arizona individual taxpayers regardless of whether or not they have children in school, and 100 percent of the donation goes directly to the schools for extracurricular activities that enrich campus life and learning.

An individual can contribute and receive a tax credit for any amount up to $200, or a couple filing jointly can contribute up to $400. It is always best to consult a tax adviser to see if you qualify for the dollar-for-dollar credit.

He has touched the lives of thousands throughout a coaching career that spans five decades and defines greatness in what we call the Toro Way. Meet Tristan Covington Conozcan a Tristan Covington Stapley Junior High School eighth grader Tristan Covington is a well-rounded student with a passion for geography. Having traveled to six countries and 26 states, he documents his adventures on a thirteen-by-eight-foot map on his basement wall and collects coins and currencies from around the world.

• He starts his day at 5:30 a.m. in the pool for Mesa Aquatics Club, plays violin and piano, participates in the National Academic League and the spelling and geography bees, and encourages others to participate in activities. • But it is his state-award-winning science fair project, “The Solution to Child Drownings,” that helped Covington understand the rewards of hard work. His idea was to attach a water-sensing microchip to the back waistband of a diaper. If an infant falls into the pool, it sends an alarm signal to a parent’s smartphone using Bluetooth technology.

• He tested a prototype by conducting four different trial runs with sensors attached to a doll. He would like to build a final product to help save lives in our community. • “I spent nights and weekends working on my idea, design and presentation. Now that I look back, the long hours working on it have paid off,” says Covington. • When asked about his plans for the future he shares, “After high school, I plan on receiving a law degree at Brigham Young University, Provo. I hope to have the opportunity to win a national office such as Secretary of State or even the President of the United States one day. I would also like to use my swimming skills to compete for an Olympic gold medal.”
