INTRODUCTION
Welcome Letter It’s an exciting time to be in business in Mesa. Welcome to the second edition of Mesa COMPASS! I am so excited to share with you some of the wonderful and exciting things the Mesa Chamber of Commerce has been up to. From business profiles about our outstanding members, to stories about our wide variety of enjoyable networking events and feature articles about what makes Mesa a wonderful place to live, work and play, I am confident you will find plenty of interesting things to read about. For many years, I have been truly fortunate to work at the Mesa Chamber of Commerce. What keeps me coming back day after day is one main thing: our members. I literally get goose bumps when I see our members hard at work, doing everything they can to not only market themselves, but also assist other members. I constantly see and hear our members referring people to other members, making helpful suggestions like “I know someone who can help you with that,” or “Have you contacted this other business for help?” It is so invigorating and rewarding to see how our members truly band together and do everything they can to help each other succeed, and in turn help Mesa to continue to add to its successes. While we are always doing whatever we can to encourage new membership, at the Mesa Chamber of Commerce we like to take it even further than that. Once a business has joined the Chamber, we strongly encourage them to get involved in everything we have to offer. Our monthly and annual programs and events allow members to get to know others, do some serious networking, and learn from our various speakers. Other members like to take a different approach to their membership through more of an advocacy role, participation in councils, meetings, and/or planning sessions. No matter how businesses use their membership, we have definitely found that the more active they are, the more successful they will become. I can honestly say that I have been blessed with not only the best staff in the world, but also the best board and the best members. I am thrilled and honored to share some of our stories with you here, and I look forward to serving you for many years to come.

CITY OF MESA
INTRODUCTION
Majestic Red Mountain provides a beautiful backdrop to the City of Mesa.
Magnificent Mesa A hub of high-quality employment centers, top-notch arts and entertainment venues, plus first-class housing and transportation options. BY PAULA HUBBS COHEN Start with a business and family-friendly lifestyle. Add in outstanding healthcare options, first-class educational opportunities and high-paying jobs. Mix with multiple connecting freeways, expanding light rail and two busy, bustling airports, and what do you get? According The third-largest city in Arizona: Mesa.
Economic growth
Mesa is a burgeoning employment center for healthcare, education, aerospace, technology and tourism (HEAT) where forward-thinking leaders don’t just ‘talk the talk’ — they ‘walk the walk’, supporting the city’s 17,000-plus businesses with an overall commerce-friendly environment. A shining example of this work recently resulted in Apple, one of the largest companies in the world, announcing it has purchased a manufacturing facility in Mesa’s Eastmark community for one of its suppliers, GT Advanced Technologies, Inc. Apple has projected that it would pour about $1 billion 6 | Mesa Chamber Business and Resource Guide
into the $79 million property, a plant that is expected to employ about 700 people, with an additional 1,300 construction-related jobs being needed to get the facility ready for production. Additional examples of the economic engines that sustain — and drive — Mesa’s to a recent growth are Boeing (where the top-rated Apache study from the attack helicopter is manufactured) and Banner Health, which is the leading employer in W. P. Carey School of the City of Mesa and has a number of major Business at Arizona hospitals and medical centers in and around Mesa. Another strong employer in the area is State University, Empire Southwest, LLC, a third-generation, Phoenix-Mesa family-owned Caterpillar® dealership that is headquartered in Mesa. Earlier this Gateway Airport year, Empire Southwest broke ground on a generates 90,000-square-foot expansion of its Mesa facility that the company estimates will add over $1.3 billion in up to 175 new jobs over the next six years. economic benefits More than 100 companies are adjacent to the Phoenix-Mesa Gateway and Falcon and supports over Field airports, employing thousands in 10,000 regional jobs. manufacturing, software and aerospace/
aviation high-tech clusters. In coming years, the Gateway area is projected to be home to more than 100,000 jobs thanks to a strong collaboration of policymakers and business, civic and educational leaders including those who are working to develop Gateway as an international aerospace center with aircraft maintenance, modification, testing and pilot training. In addition, Gateway has been designated as Foreign Trade Zone #221, as well as a Military Reuse Zone, assets that make it a prime location for global-minded companies.
Expanding transportation options
Set in the midst of a modern and growing transportation system, Mesa is close to a trio of nearby freeways with numerous planned interchanges that will further enhance access to the East Valley. Combined with the eastward expansion of Valley Metro light rail into downtown Mesa, ground transportation accessibility and ways to connect with Mesa are almost unmatched. But the area’s transportation gifts aren’t restricted to just freeways, updated roadways and light rail. Indeed, Falcon Field, touted as one of the busiest general aviation airports in the country, and Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport, one of the state’s transportation jewels, are both located in Mesa. Expected to carry some 1.3 million total passengers in fiscal 2013, Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport was the fastest growing commercial airport in America last year based on passenger percentage growth. Currently nearing completion on a multi-phase expansion plan, this regional hub hosts more than 40 companies and serves over 35 cities with non-stop service via Allegiant.
World-class healthcare
Healthcare is another huge success story for Mesa, with massive investment in medical providers, hospitals and medical centers in the East Valley in recent years. As a result, world-class healthcare institutions are located in Mesa, including Banner Desert Medical Center (549 beds; 3,500 employees) and Banner Children’s at Cardon Children’s Medical Center (206 beds; 642 employees). All this new building, plus tens of millions of dollars in renovations, means that Mesa is reaping not only the health and peace-of-mind benefits of having quick and easy access to high-quality healthcare, but also the
economic boon brought about by a wealth of employment opportunities and an influx of localized spending by the thousands of associated employees.
Higher education
Among the plethora of higher education institutions in Mesa are Arizona State University’s Polytechnic campus, A.T. Still University and Mesa Community College, which is part of the Maricopa County Community College District, one of the largest providers of higher education in the United States. In 2012 and 2013, Mesa attracted several additional top-notch educational institutions: Albright College, Benedictine University, Upper Iowa University, Westminster College and Wilkes University. And just recently, Phoenix-based Grand Canyon University selected Mesa’s Eastmark community for its East Valley location. Beyond traditional higher education, the East Valley Institute of Technology (EVIT) was Arizona’s first joint technological education district that allows public school districts to deliver specialized vocational, career and technical education. With two campuses in Mesa, EVIT provides a broad array of occupation-specific programs to career-minded high school students as well as adults.
Shopping, arts and entertainment
But Mesa’s not all work, study and no play. In fact, indoor pursuits are plentiful, and shopping is one of the major attractions in the hustle and bustle that is Mesa. For example, anchored by Arizona’s only Bass Pro Shop, Mesa’s largest retail offering is Mesa Riverview which sports more than 1.3 million square-feet of retail space featuring a mix of well-known stores, independent retailers and an eclectic selection of specialty shops and restaurants. Mesa is also home to a bevy of upscale shops at Dana Park Village Square, the popular Fiesta Mall, outlet stores and other value-priced venues at Power Square Mall, and Superstition Springs Center’s 150-plus family-oriented stores and eateries. When it’s time to relax, many folks find respite at one of the numerous performing arts venues and museums in Mesa. To wit: Drawing almost 400,000 patrons a year, the Mesa Arts Center is Arizona’s largest
Mesa Mayor in national spotlight This past summer, Mesa Mayor Scott Smith was sworn in as President of the U.S. Conference of Mayors which is the official nonpartisan organization of cities with populations of 30,000 or more. There are 1,210 such cities in the country today, and each city is represented in the Conference by its chief elected official, the mayor. Mayor Smith is the first Arizona mayor to serve as President and his position gives Arizona a direct connection to the federal government on important issues such as immigration, education, cyber-security and expanding trade in the Americas. Indeed, Smith said that being President of the U.S. Conference of Mayors has given him a voice in Washington, D.C. on the issues that impact Arizona and Mesa the most. “I can also work with fellow Mayors from across the country to find solutions to common issues and share strategies for success,” he added. As Conference President, Mayor Smith will set the organization’s agenda, appoint committee and task force chairs, and serve as the national spokesperson during his year-long term of office. Prior to becoming President, Mayor Smith served as the Conference’s Vice President and represented the organization at the Republican GOP Convention.

THE ARIZONA REPUBLIC
Looking back at Mesa
Spring Training in Mesa is a great opportunity for Chicago Cubs’ fans to get their favorite player’s autograph.
arts center with four theaters, five art galleries and 14 art studios. This architectural showpiece features a comprehensive calendar of professional performing arts shows and concerts as well as visual arts and arts education programming. Boasting opportunities for all ages and interests, Mesa is also where you’ll find the Arizona Museum for Youth, Mesa Historical Museum, Commemorative Air Force Aircraft Museum and the Arizona Museum of Natural History. Last, but by no means least, baseball aficionados definitely love the fact that Mesa is home to Major League Baseball Chicago Cubs Spring Training, one of the biggest draws in the Cactus League. Having hosted the Cubs for more than 50 years, Mesa is upping its game even further with a year-round, state-of-the-art sports and parks venue — Riverview Park — scheduled to open in 2014.
Housing options
Employment, healthcare, educational and recreational amenities are part and parcel of why Mesa is such an in-demand location for homebuilders and homebuyers — a fact reflected in the area’s huge uptick in the market for new homes. Speaking of which, after a day spent at work or play, Mesa residents have their choice of a wide variety of family-friendly affordable neighborhoods, upscale gated communities, acre-plus equestrian properties and even million-dollar (and more) estates. A sampling of some of the nationally known builders who are currently creating new neighborhoods in Mesa — an investment in their belief in the health and growth opportunities available here — are Pulte Homes, Blandford Homes, Taylor Morrison, Maracay Homes, Richmond American, Mattamy Homes, Woodside Homes, Ryland Homes, Standard Pacific Homes and Meritage Homes.

Mesa has come a long way in the 2,000 years since the Hohokam people first settled the area. Today, Mesa is the 3rd largest city in Arizona, as well as the 38th largest city in the United States. Mesa’s rich history has contributed to its status as one of the most culturally diverse cities in Arizona Some of the canals that are in use today are relics from the Hohokam’s days. Centuries passed, however, before additional settlers arrived in the area. Among the first settlers in the late 1800s were Mormon pioneer Daniel Webster Jones, as well as the First Mesa Company, consisting of settlers including Francis Martin Pomeory and Charles Robson. The First Mesa Company chose to settle on the very mesa that the city gets its name from. Mesa was able to stave off the worst of the Great Depression thanks to major contributions from Dr. A.J. Chandler, who expanded one of the old Hohokam canals and paved the way for an electric power plant. The plant was eventually purchased by the city and helped provide new infrastructure and stability during the rough economic years. Mesa received a major boost in 1941, when Falcon Field and Williams Air Force Base were constructed to provide training for pilots during WWII. Many of these families ended up settling in the area and contributed to the population boom that took place throughout the 1900s. Following WWII, Mesa saw a shift from agriculture to more aerospace and high-tech companies, thanks to the established presence of the air fields. High-tech companies now number in the hundreds and include major staples such as Boeing. These companies help to develop technology that is used for both commercial and military purposes. Thanks to numerous decades of more than 70 percent growth, Mesa has come a long way from its early beginnings. Beautiful weather conditions and hundreds of entertainment options have made Mesa one of Arizona’s most successful cities.

MESA CHAMBER
The Mesa Chamber of Commerce hosts events thorughout the year, offering great opportunties for networking and education.
The Voice of Business and the Community Mesa Chamber of Commerce is strong advocate for business success and growth Since the day the Mesa Chamber of Commerce first opened its doors over a century ago, it has strived to do everything possible to help local businesses grow and succeed. Sally Harrison, President of the Mesa Chamber of Commerce, says this commitment remains as strong today as it always has. She and her staff are constantly looking for ways to help their members get the resources they need to succeed. “We work hard to give our members opportunities — not just as far as the many networking events that we do — but also in terms of having the Chamber represent them with political issues,” Harrison says. “We always want to be an advocate for businesses, and we are always looking out for members who have issues that need to be addressed.”
Getting the word out
In addition, Harrison says that if a member has some type of event or other news to report, the Mesa Chamber will do all it can to help get the word out to the community. “We will promote our members’ events through social media or whatever makes the most sense,” she says. Eric Frei, general manager of WAXIE Sanitary Supply, says that he has definitely noticed and appreciates the way the Chamber will help spread the word about what the different members are doing. 12 | Mesa Chamber Business and Resource Guide
BY ALISON STANTON
“They are great about communicating about the events and do a terrific job blasting out the information to all of the members,” he says, adding that he is also impressed with the way the Chamber is always reaching out to find new members, as well as finding ways for existing members to be more involved.
Community involvement
In addition to helping the local businesses succeed, Harrison says she and her staff are also proud of their extensive community involvement. “I think it’s a very important part of our job to be active in the community and be involved. It’s crucial to build relationships not just with our members, but the business community in general,” she says. Ray Speakman, a partner and business developer for Velocity Design Group, says the “Mesa Morning Live” program is an outstanding example of how the Chamber is striving to be an advocate not just for businesses, but the entire community. “The show will often have influential people and government officials on as guests, and they will not only talk about Mesa and how to improve it, but also how to help build the business community,” he says, adding that he is also impressed with the way the Chamber has a council devoted to helping non-profits succeed. “The Chamber truly recognizes the need to be involved with the local community and to reach out and help.”
Mesa Chamber offers something for everybody Events, activities, customized to business and community needs The Mesa Chamber of Commerce features a vast selection of events and activities that are tailor-made for their members. Between weekly meetings, monthly networking activities and annual get-togethers, the Chamber is involved in more than 450 “happenings” each year. The following trio of events help illustrate the variety of activities the Chamber offers: • BREAKFAST WITH THE MAYOR — Every year, Mesa Mayor Scott Smith announces an exciting new program or initiative during the popular event. Former announcements have centered around Mesa’s H.E.A.T. (Healthcare, Education, Aerospace, and Tourism/Technology) Initiative for Economic Development and iMesa, a grassroots project that is meant to develop transformational projects that will help to improve the community. “Everybody always wants to hear from the Mayor and learn what he has planned for the city,” says Sally Harrison, President of the Mesa Chamber of Commerce.
BY ALISON STANTON
• ANNUAL LEADERSHIP AWARDS — This event allows members to gather together and celebrate and honor some of the best and brightest businesses and educators of the Mesa business community. While the event has traditionally been a more formal affair, Harrison said the next awards ceremony, which is scheduled for April, 2014, will feature a fun and casual baseball theme. “We will encourage groups of people to come as a team with their own jerseys or t-shirts with their team name on them,” she says, adding that one member will also be inducted in the Mesa Chamber Hall of Fame. • FIREBALL RUN — In 2014, Chamber members and Harrison will be part of the reality show “Fireball Run,” which involves teams competing against each other to help find some of America’s missing children. Harrison said her team will be assigned a child from the Mesa area. “This will be a really unique opportunity for us to highlight Mesa and some of our sponsors while we work together to try to locate the missing child,” she says.
Mesa Morning Live Monthly event engages, and provides outstanding networking opportunities One of the most popular programs offered by the Mesa Chamber of Commerce is called Mesa Morning Live. Held from 6:45 to 8:30 a.m. on the second Friday of every month, the show features an entertaining David Letterman-like emcee, several interesting guests, and a tasty breakfast. In keeping with the Letterman theme, Mesa Morning Live features a Top 10 List that is always a hit with attendees. Past guests have included “The Human Calculator” — who impressed both the emcee and the audience with his amazing mathematical skills — City Council members, journalists, Sheriff Joe Arpaio, and some of the Chamber’s many sponsors. “Mesa Morning Live has really taken off,” says Sally Harrison, President of the Mesa Chamber of Commerce.
BY ALISON STANTON
“Every month we have about 100 to 150 people in the audience, and the program is also rebroadcast on Channel 11,” Harrison says. “We have also started uploading our shows onto YouTube, so people can always see the show.” In addition to having the chance to watch the fun and often funny show, Harrison says Mesa Morning Live offers attendees an outstanding opportunity to meet other members of the Chamber and network about their businesses. “The overall theme for the Mesa Chamber is ‘Get Up. Get Connected. Get in the Know.’ and we have found that is really true for those who attend Mesa Morning Live,” she says. For more information about Mesa Morning Live, visit mesamorninglive.com. Not a Member? Here’s what you’ve been missing Mesa Chamber helps to nurture, grow the local businesses In order to offer members a wide variety of value-added events, features and benefits, Mesa Chamber of Commerce President Sally Harrison said the staff is always trying to think outside of the box. “In fact, we always say that the Chamber doesn’t even have a box anymore,” she says. In addition to a variety of benefits — including being listed in the Mesa Chamber website, the annual Membership Directory and Resource Guide found inside this issue of COMPASS, and being part of the exclusive member-to-member referral program — Chamber members can take part in dozens of events and activities that will help connect them with each other and the community. From unique programs like Mesa Morning Live to Celebrate a Member Day, which started off small, but has expanded into a much larger monthly event that honors a member for one day, Harrison says the Chamber truly helps to grow and support local business owners. Another innovative program that the Mesa Chamber offers is called the Mesa Business Education Alliance, which Harrison

said helps to bring the education and business communities together. “For example, The Boeing Company may need engineers, and so through the Alliance, they can learn which local higher education facilities can provide them with what they need,” Harrison says. The Non-Profit Vitality Council also offers the chance for members to connect, cooperate and collaborate, Harrison said. “We have some small non-profits in the Chamber that can work with other local and larger businesses who will mentor them,” Harrison says. “It’s kind of like a big circle coming together. Everyone is working as a team to enhance what everyone else is doing.” By building a strong business network, Harrison says the Mesa Chamber helps to improve the overall community as well as the quality of life in Mesa. “Through our programs, events and activities, the Mesa Chamber of Commerce is doing all it can to build an even better Chamber.”

The Mesa Chamber of Commerce recently began to offer an insurance program through the Humana company that members are welcome to join. Craig Henry, a sales manager at Alphagraphics and the Chamber’s in-coming board chair, says the new program is based on an offering that Humana has for businesses with two to 99 employees that are already compliant with the Affordable Care Act. “A couple of years ago, we started looking at how to craft a series of benefits that local businesses couldn’t get without being a member of the Mesa Chamber,” Henry says. “Offering insurance has always been a problem for small businesses, so we tried to get a program that would give them the most bang for the least amount of money.” By creating what is called a “skinny network,” Henry says the new Humana insurance program is working with a select group of doctors and hospitals that will accept payments at a certain level. “There is a real emphasis on wellness with the Humana program. Members can earn points and premium reductions by doing even simple things like getting their blood pressure or cholesterol checked.”

In addition, different types of plastic are now recycled and can be transformed into beautiful textiles, carpet, clothing and a wood-like material that is used for decks, outdoor furniture and more. Newspapers, telephone books, office paper products and magazines can also be recycled and made into new paper materials. According to the Container Recycling Institute, the 36 billion aluminum cans that ended up in landfills across the nation last year had a scrap value of more than $600 million. There may actually come a time where we may literally mine our landfills for the huge quantities of resources that we previously buried. In order to help Mesa solid waste customers recycle as much as possible, thereby minimizing the amount of material going under cover, the City of Mesa offers a wide variety of innovative, easy-to-use and sustainable recycling programs. Nearly every year, the city of Mesa is home to significant expansion, both in the public and private sectors. In 2013, for example, the airport serving the East Valley — Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport — announced that it will be expanding from eight gates to 10. The Airport Council International lists Gateway Airport as the fastest-growing commercial airport in America for total passengers served, based on percentage increase. In 2012, 45 percent more passengers traveled through Mesa Gateway than the year before. Light rail construction began to extend routes along Main Street in Mesa, with the line reaching Mesa Drive by 2015. Mesa Community College is constructing a $15 million performing arts center.

Mesa has a rich history with an exciting future, full of a variety of amenities and opportunities. I love the exuberance the community has for where we are headed as a city, especially the changes going on in the Downtown area. The investments in higher education, light rail and arts and culture will generate sustainable positive changes for generations to come.”
Attracting impressive companies isn’t new for Mesa. Consider that Nammo Talley, Inc., a developer of specialized defense industry products and vital aviation safety equipment such as military aircraft seat ejection systems, has been located in Mesa since 1956. “Mesa has a fantastic business environment but it’s also a great place to live,” says Scott Selle, President of the company

that employs 200 in Mesa. “The city offers an overall great work-life balance with affordable housing for employees, good schools for their families, plus countless recreational activities. We can recruit talented employees from ASU Polytechnic (in Mesa) and Mesa Community College, and the high standard of living ensures we are able to retain them.” Boeing first came to Mesa as Hughes Helicopters, when that company relocated from Culver City, Calif. in 1982 to flight-test the Apache helicopter. The Mesa facility became Boeing in 1997. GECO, Inc. was established in Mesa in 1995 as a producer of hardware, software and engineering components for defense systems. Today it has close to 50 employees. “Very few cities offer the supportive business environment, the skilled, aviation-knowledgeable workforce and the stability that Mesa does,” says George Graves, Vice President of the company. “We look forward to supporting the City’s economic plan as it supports our focus on business growth in aviation markets. “As the economy has improved, more and more companies are looking to expand,” says Bill Jabjiniak, City of Mesa’s Economic Development Director. “The city of Mesa has invested heavily in infrastructure over the years. With the improving economy and infrastructure investments, Mesa is well positioned for attracting high-value companies.”
Moving to Mesa was a truly great decision for Crescent Crown. The Cubs’ new $84 million Riverview Park Spring Training home at the intersection of the 101 and 202 Loops will bring plenty of Wrigley Field elements, including a replica marquee and a cantilever upper deck and roof only seen at the historic ballpark. But local economic development officials see the potential for a lot more than a Wrigley-ville knock off.

Mesa home to high-tech heavy hitters In addition to being a long-time leader in the aviation sector, Mesa has become a high-tech haven, and expansion and relocation of prestigious companies continued in 2013. In November, the world’s most valuable company announced it’s helping a supplier relocate to east Mesa to produce components for cell phones and tablets. Apple Computer has purchased a building in east Mesa that once was the First Solar factory. Apple’s supplier, GT Advanced Technologies, Inc., will manufacture small pieces of high-tech glass for Apple products. The plant will employ 700 people, and 1,300 construction workers will be needed to renovate the facility to conform to the company’s needs. Products manufactured there will include the now-famous fingerprint sensor on the new iPhone 5S. Jobs are expected to pay an average of $50,000 a year. A prominent supplier of industrial, medical, specialty and electronic gases announced it will build a large-capacity air separation unit. oxygen and argon will be separated from atmospheric air in a chilling-and-compressing process. The plant is expected to be producing high-purity products by the third quarter of 2014. A major tire producer planned a research facility to investigate the use of a desert plant as another source of rubber. Bridgestone America’s new Biorubber Process Research Center will investigate the use of the Guayule (pronounced Why-u-lee) plant as an alternative natural rubber source. Once built, the center will accommodate 40 researchers and technicians on a 10-acre site. The first rubber samples for tire evaluations are expected in mid-2015. Equally important is the Intergovernmental Agreement (IGA) signed between the City of Mesa and Arizona State University to create the Mesa Technology Accelerator on the ASU Polytechnic campus in east Mesa. A business accelerator such as this will help enlarge the regional employment center near the Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport and move the city closer to its goal of creating an additional 100,000 high-wage jobs.

Falcon Field is huge economic driver in City of Mesa, employing more than 1,000 workers.
Mesa flying high City’s aviation industry is $2.3 billion economic driver Mesa’s rich aviation history has become a massive economic engine. Both Falcon Field and Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport have roots dating back to World War II, when they were opened largely to train pilots. But today, they bring a combined $2.3 billion annual economic impact with plenty of room for growth.
Falcon Field
Falcon Field is home to CAE Oxford Aviation Academy’s Phoenix branch, which is part of the largest flight school academy in the world. Falcon, a northeast Mesa general aviation reliever airport, is also regularly on the FAA’s top 10 busiest general aviation airports list with 260,000 to 300,000 touch-downs or takeoffs annually. Falcon has more than 30 aviation-related companies on-site, including firms like Heliponents Inc., Performance One Aviation and AeroMaritime America, Inc. Combined, all the companies at Falcon employ more than 1,000 people. The airport will begin a $1.6 million terminal expansion in early 2014.

Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport
For Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport, massive growth comes largely at the hands of Las Vegas-based Allegiant Airlines, which now serves 35 different cities out of Gateway. “Before Allegiant came, we were kind of planning for our hopes and dreams and then it all came to fruition,” says Jane Morris, the airport’s Executive Director, when discussing the airport’s early master plan. Allegiant’s strategy to connect customers with smaller communities near larger destinations was untested several years ago. But the concept boomed. With its low-cost, low-overhead approach, Allegiant is also a perfect fit for Gateway. “Our low fees really fit with their business model. We’ve been able to grow together,” Morris adds. Phoenix-Mesa Gateway airport serves more than 1.4 million passengers annually and has a capacity of 2.5 million under its current 10-gate configuration. The 3,020-acre southeast Mesa site will likely see a more than $300 million expansion effort commence within the next five years.
The areas surrounding Mesa’s two busy airfields have also been attractive for business relocation. More than 100 companies are located adjacent to the airports, employing more than 10,000 people in fields like aerospace/ aviation high-tech, manufacturing and software industry clusters. Companies near Falcon Field include Boeing, MD Helicopters and non-aviation industry enterprises like Waxie Sanitary Supply and Wiremasters, to name just a few. One of Phoenix-Mesa Gateway’s larger employers is aircraft repair company Able Engineering, which recently moved into a 250,000 square-foot building, employing more than 200 people. Whether housed at or near Falcon Field or Gateway, company leaders and employees enjoy quick freeway access to ASU’s Polytechnic campus, the school’s main Tempe campus, downtown Mesa, the Mesa Arts Center, Cubs spring training games and other valley amenities. The transportation system is a big selling point for companies, according to Falcon Field spokesperson Dee Anne Thomas. “I think there’s a lot of business activity, a lot of economic activity people don’t realize around the airports,” she says. The areas around the airfields are primed for further growth, especially with the city’s HEAT (Healthcare, Education, Aerospace, Technology and Tourism) economic development program in place, which also targets aerospace sector growth. In addition, the city projects more than $100 million in new aviation infrastructure development alone to be completed by 2015.
Light rail extension key for downtown redevelopment BY BRIAN SODOMA
Rob Antoniak is excited for the home stretch — even though it’s still a ways away. But Valley Metro’s community outreach coordinator says the next year will bring some more tangible evidence of the $200 million, 3.1 mile Central Mesa (light rail) Extension. For the past year, he admits, it’s been a bit humdrum, with the focus on utilities relocations. In 2014, commuters along Main Street, between Mesa and Sycamore drives, will see plenty of center-street guide-way work, as well as four transit stations and a Park-and-Ride taking shape. The extension will connect downtown Mesa to Tempe and the central valley by 2016. Bringing light rail and an estimated 9,700 weekday passengers to the area will bring a
boost to downtown’s restaurants, retailers, the Mesa Arts Center, and growing resident base. “It (downtown Mesa) is really going through that evolutionary period. You’re really starting to feel that change,” Antoniak adds. One of the keys to the area’s revitalization has been the opening of several private college branches. The light rail system was a big conversation when courting the schools, said Scot Rigby, a Project Manager with Mesa’s Economic Development department. “For the universities it was important. They wanted to have a walk-able campus and a way to get people around. Transit was a big component,” he says. For more information about the project, visit mesaaz.gov/lightrail.

HOUSING
There’s no place like home Mesa’s real estate market is expanding and diversifying If George Bliss wasn’t the Managing Director for Keller Williams International’s KW Commercial in Mesa, he would most likely be the city’s head cheerleader. When asked how Mesa is faring in the expanding real estate market, he enthusiastically answered, “Phenomenal! What started as a sellers’ market has balanced now between an equal number of buyers and sellers.”
Prices to fit any budget
From designated historic areas such as the Evergreen and West Second Street Historic Districts, where shade trees line wide streets containing classically- constructed homes, to new subdivisions and master-planned communities, Mesa’s available real estate offers a price range to fit most budgets. For example, according to Bliss, a townhome in the upscale, planned community of Las Sendas is available for $200,000, nudging the $4 million mark at the high side for a large stand-alone, single family home, with varying pricing in between. In the multi-use neighborhood called Red Mountain Ranch, homes vary in price from $200,000 to nearly $1 million. However, other areas in the city offer starter homes, think townhomes, for as low as $70-75,000, Bliss says. For the 55-and-over folks, according to Craig Ahlstrom, chairman and CEO of Farnsworth Development Company, there’s a plethora of options.
BY LINDA FINE CONABOY
For example, homes in areas such as Dreamland Villa, Sunland Springs Village or Sunland Village East, all Farnsworth projects, start at around $160,000 and climb close to $500,000, or more depending on the area, Ahlstrom said. Generally, amenities in master planned, active adult communities include golf courses, swim and fitness centers, outdoor sports, clubs and interest groups.
New communities
Growth is apparent within the city’s Eastmark, a planned community, with close to five-square-miles of both residential and commercial venues. The first major increment, a residential component, broke ground last year including several builders in the first phase. With new residents arriving daily, land developer DMB Associates plans more new homes and commercial centers. The announcement of Apple, Inc’s. recent foray into Eastmark at the long vacant First Solar, Inc. factory promises even more homes and jobs at top salaries, a feather in the cap of an area already enjoying a healthy economic outlook. “We hope this is the first of many facilities,” Mesa Mayor Scott Smith told The Arizona Republic in a November 5 article. “We’d love it if they [Apple] found great success here and found a reason to build more here.” “I don’t know of other places in the country where someone could come and find the perfect storm of housing affordability, climate, transportation, an outstanding freeway system and great airports,” Ahlstrom says.

Mesa housing: By the numbers
Eastmark: Heart of the East Valley Connected via a plethora of parks and neighborhoods, Eastmark is truly a complete community BY PAULA HUBBS COHEN The most buzzed-about new community in the Valley is Eastmark, a 3,200-acre residential, commercial and industrial community located on the site of the former General Motors (GM) Proving Grounds in Mesa. Developed by DMB Associates, Eastmark opened in June 2013 to much acclaim with seven first-class builders offering an array of unique-to-Eastmark floor plans. Along with high-quality homes, intimate neighborhoods, top-rated schools and an abundance of recreational spaces, Eastmark also includes the 100-acre Eastmark Great Park that, at build-out, will connect the community’s residential areas, employment cores, parks and commerce venues. Modeled after a number of notable urban parks, the mile-and-a-half-long Great Park is intended to be a gathering place for community celebrations, sporting competitions and other recreational uses. The Great Park is at the heart of this tree-lined community that will include richly landscaped streets and parkways as well as an interconnected system of more than 100 parks, piazzas and plazas at completion. Anchored by Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport, three major freeways, numerous businesses and more, the entire Eastmark project calls for 15,000 residential units and 20 million square-feet of non-residential use, including office and professional use plus resort and entertainment districts.
Eastmark’s historic roots
Some 60 years ago, General Motors needed a private hot-weather setting where they could test vehicles for durability, road-handling and emissions. What the executives at GM found back then was an isolated site in Mesa, a site that became known as the Desert Proving Grounds. For nearly half a century, the Desert Proving Grounds would be a center of top-secret, hidden and out-of-the-way automotive innovation, but by 2000, the City of Mesa had greatly expanded, encroaching on the privacy vital to the competitive nature of GM’s work. Because it had become increasingly difficult to protect trade secrets from a rapidly growing population, GM announced their plan to relocate the Desert Proving Grounds, leaving behind a mostly undeveloped plot of land encompassing nearly five square miles.

Retirement dreams Warm weather and affordable living make Mesa attractive to winter visitors, retirees BY LINDA FINE CONABOY It’s no secret, retirees and winter visitors flock to Arizona, lured by mild winter temperatures; however, Mesa’s gentle climate, combined with its down-home warmth, amenities and affordability seem to be an especially popular blend, swelling population levels to near record numbers; Mesa is now the third largest city in the state.
Sunny skies
“Our year-round sunshine draws visitors from around the world,” says Mesa Mayor Scott Smith. “You can spend a day on the golf course and a night downtown taking in a show at the award-winning Mesa Arts Center. Whether you enjoy the outdoors, sports, museums, shopping or dining out, Mesa truly has something for everyone.” But what the mayor didn’t mention is the wide range of housing opportunities from charming older districts to the newer, more cosmopolitan neighborhoods. Plenty of affordable, mid-priced to upscale housing is available as well within carefully planned communities, including several options in master planned areas aimed at the 55-and-older resident. Although Mayor Smith touched on it, he didn’t describe the shopping within the older city core, originally a one-square-mile town 34 | Mesa Chamber Business and Resource Guide
site and now home to an array of eclectic small shops including a barber shop fronted by an old fashioned barber pole, book sellers, a piano store, art galleries and numerous independently-owned restaurants serving up delectable food not found at their fast food rivals. However, lest your taste leans to the opposite end of the shopping scale, several newer shopping centers flank the city’s east and west ends.
Signature destination
In addition to shopping, more than 2,000 acres of parkland are within the city limits, with a vast network of hiking trails in the mountains. If all else fails, maybe its baseball that will be your lure to Mesa, specifically the Chicago Cubs, which draws a myriad of visitors to spring training. “The Chicago Cubs have been coming to Mesa each spring for more than half a century,” Mayor Smith says. “I’m excited to see the new stadium and Riverview Park [part of the Cubs spring training facility] become signature destinations for our residents and sports fans.” The Mayor had it right when he said, “Mesa truly has something for everyone.”

Classes are small and students are provided with personal attention and guidance from faculty. The school is nationally recognized for its individualized academic communities. Wilkes University was established in 1933 in “ We hope that in five Wilkes-Barre, Penn. The years or so there will liberal arts college offers graduate level programs in be literally hundreds mechanical engineering, if not thousands of engineering management, business administration, college students living classroom technology in the downtown area.” and creative writing. The school prides itself on — Mesa Mayor Scott Smith providing small classes taught by Ph.D level faculty and a strong mentorship program. Wilkes University is consistently named one of the nation’s best universities by U.S. News and World Report and the Princeton Review ranked Wilkes on its “Best Northeastern Colleges” list.
High quality
“I think it’s phenomenal,” says Michael Gundersdorf, enrollment coordinator for Wilkes University. “All the schools that came here are high caliber universities and colleges. They are student-centered which is different than for-profit or big university models. They have smaller class sizes that provide a well-rounded, immediately applicable, educational experience.”

Student success is Job #1 Mesa Public School District one of country’s best BY DOLORES TROPIANO
In a state where many schools are suffering from reduced funding and academic apathy, Mesa’s Public School District has made the grade with everything from A+ schools of excellence to military academy appointments and national merit scholarships. Test scores of Mesa students consistently rank high, with both Mountain View High School and Heritage Academy scoring some of the highest SAT scores in Arizona and Mountain View High School ranked as one of the best high schools by U.S. News and World Report. “Mesa Public Schools have a laser focus on student success,” says Michael Cowan, superintendent of the Mesa Public Schools. “Our outstanding educators deliver a rigorous curriculum using proven instructional practices.” The district is one of the largest and most influential of any in the state, often being called upon for legislative leadership. An annual budget of $562 million helps schools secure their vision of providing unprecedented excellence in education. The district has embraced the concept of choice with 50 elementary schools, nine junior high schools, six comprehensive high schools and 17 choice and success schools. Students can select from back-to-basic Benjamin Franklin elementary and junior high schools, International Baccalaureate programs, biotechnology schools, STEM diplomas, dual language and an award-winning Flight Centers and Space Integration Modules. “We offer a broad spectrum of quality educational choices to meet the needs of every learner,” Cowan says. “We truly have a place for everyone.”

Reason to ‘smile’ New Mesa clinic offers advanced dental care When routine dental visits aren’t enough, it’s reassuring to know that there are advanced resources available. The Dr. Rick Workman Advanced Care Clinic in Mesa opened in July to serve patients with complex dental needs, including patients with medical conditions such as cancer, hemophilia and kidney disease. The first of its kind in Arizona, the A.T. Still University (ATSU) clinic also trains dental students and licensed dentists in special care dentistry. Previously, patients with special needs often traveled outside the state for dental care, says Dr. Maureen Romer, associate dean of post-doctoral education at ATSU’s Arizona School of Dentistry & Oral Health. In addition to serving patients with medical problems, the clinic provides advanced care for patients with physical and developmental disabilities, patients with heart and Alzheimer’s diseases and bariatric patients. The clinic is wheelchair-accessible and includes a dental operating suite designed for patients weighing more than 350 pounds.

Hometown charm shines with surprising amenities Warm, friendly folks the best perks of all As you bask in Mesa’s friendly, hometown charm, you’ll find an amazing wealth of world-class amenities made all the more wonderful by the warm, friendly people who live here. From international concerts and colorful festivals to education, shopping, employment and outdoor opportunities, the city abounds with exciting possibilities for all ages. Contributing to a nostalgic neighborhood feel is a downtown that is modest in size, conveniently accessible and wonderfully walkable — not what you’d expect from the 38th largest city in the nation. Buildings from the early 1900s speak to a depth of tradition and offer whimsical ghost tours in the former bootleg tunnels underneath West Main Street businesses.
Cultural galaxy
Dramatic new architecture is woven into the historic cityscape. The International Association of Venue Managers acknowledged The Mesa Arts Center’s awesomeness with its Award of Excellence, choosing it over the Sydney Opera House in Australia. MAC, as it is fondly called by locals, glows with a galaxy of international performing artists from Vince Gill to Itzhak Perlman. The center hosts exhibitions, classes and organizations including seven founding resident companies as diverse as the Southwest Shakespeare Company and East Valley Children’s Theatre.
Brilliant downtown
Going to Mesa restaurants, parks and special celebrations are fond childhood memories for Mayra Perez. Now 22, she enjoys shopping the sweet boutiques and going to cafes, music happenings and festivals like the Zombie Walk and Dia de los Muertos. “Mesa has become more young and hip,” she says. “My friends and I like going out to the art events like Second Fridays. Plus, the Friday Farmer’s Market is just the type of thing my age group is into – getting more fit and healthy.”

of Mesa are the Superstition Mountains with trails ranging from wheel-chair accessible to multi-day backpacking and rugged rock climbing. Nearby desert lakes provide a year ‘round oasis for swimming, boating and exploring canyon coves. Strolling through gorgeous neighborhood parks is one of Mesa resident Josh Todd’s 2-year-old daughter’s favorite things. After living out East for the past decade, Todd says it’s great to be back in the wonderful weather and activities he remembers growing up here. He added, with his wife’s family in Kansas, the bargain flights from adjacent Phoenix-Gateway Airport are a convenient bonus. “There are a lot of young professionals coming to Mesa,” Todd says. “And, because many people here are not from here, I think they are more welcoming. Already, we’ve made good friends with a couple from Ohio.”
City of opportunity
The openness and willingness to meet new people reminds Robert Seelinger, Westminister at Mesa campus dean, of his dad, who was from the West. Moving to Mesa from the college’s Missouri campus, Seelinger said the willingness of the city to partner with the private liberal arts college reflects the inviting and innovative spirit of community. Moving recently to the downtown, Dr. Selcen Phelps, director of International Business Programs on the Westminister at Mesa campus, says the people who say hello as they walk by and chat if you have time are much like her husband, who grew up in a small town. But here, you have “big city” cultural, education and business opportunities. Describing to those who haven’t experienced the open attitude of its people and the “big sky” of the West can be difficult. Phelps chuckles that now that one of the world’s legendary tech companies announced it is opening a Mesa facility, she just tells Midwestern friends that Apple discovered what she has found in Mesa — a community on the rise that nurtures creativity while holding onto its tradition of a warm, Western welcome.
The City of Mesa is always looking to, not only improve the quality of life for its residents, but to also help strengthen and support local businesses. A good example of this is The Cheesecake Factory, which was a real win for Superstition Springs Center and Mesa. The popular restaurant broke ground in June of 2007 and opened a short 88 days later; this amazing time frame could have only happened with tremendous support from the City of Mesa.” — Steve Wood, Senior Manager, property management, Superstition Springs Center Mesa Chamber Business and Resource Guide | 43

Magic and discovery Mesa offers a plethora of attractions that amaze and inform BY GREMLYN BRADLEY-WADDELL
Ready to explore Dinosaur Mountain without having to put on hiking boots or witness a flash flood — safely, of course — without getting soaked? Or just want to get away from it all for a few hours and take in a Broadway hit like “Fiddler on the Roof” or “South Pacific?” Entertaining and, yes, even educational (don’t tell the kids!), experiences like this are close at hand and just waiting to be had at the Arizona Museum of Natural History and The Palms Theatre, respectively, in Mesa. And these are just a small sampling of the city’s rich treasure of cultural offerings. Check them out, as well as, these other awesome attractions in the area: • The i.d.e.a. Museum: Formerly the Arizona Museum for Youth, this family-friendly museum mixes creativity, imagination, science, technology, mathematics and the arts. • Mesa Arts Center: Concerts, lectures, art exhibitions, classes and workshops – this award-winning facility’s got it all. The lineup for 2014 includes ballet classes, a performance by Itzhak Perlman and the musical Oliver! • Arizona Museum of Natural History: Touch a fossilized thighbone from an 44 | Mesa Chamber Business and Resource Guide
Apatosaurus, a Jurassic-era dinosaur the likes of whom once roamed what’s now Arizona, visit a replica of a Hohokam village, experience the interior of a vintage territorial jail cell and then head outside to pan for gold. • The Palms Theatre: Get gussied up and ready for a great show, whether it’s a comedy, a concert, a Broadway hit or a children’s production. Don’t even bother making dinner reservations elsewhere; an extra fee snags you a yummy, in-theatre meal. • The Arizona Wing of the Commemorative Air Force Aviation Museum: This is the place to learn more about World War II, with a variety of exhibits including ones devoted to the Tuskegee Airmen, Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASPs) and the B-17 Flying Fortress, “Chow Hound,” which was lost in action during the war. • The Desert Belle and The Dolly Steamboat: Water you waiting for? These separate operations, the Desert Belle paddleboat at Saguaro Lake north of Mesa and the Dolly Steamboat at Canyon Lake northeast of Apache Junction, offer pleasure and dinner cruises showcasing the Sonoran Desert’s stunning flora and fauna.
Spirituality is alive and well in Mesa. One of the state’s popular visitor attractions, especially during the holidays, the Mesa Arizona Temple Visitors’ Center, founded in the early 1900s, represents just one of many faith choices in the area. Several hundred Christian congregations are found within the city from Baptist and Lutheran to Greek Orthodox and Unity. Home to Catholics, Mesa’s largest religious population, are historic churches such as Christ the King, founded in the 50s, and Queen of Peace that opened in 1940 but whose roots go back to 1912, when the Franciscan brothers started Sacred Heart. Find a listing of some of the city’s Christian Churches at www.churchangel.com. The Chabad of Mesa serves the Jewish community and Masjid-e-Noor is an Islamic mosque. Followers of Eastern religions find a variety of choices including the Arizona International Buddhist Meditation Center and Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism Tongdo Temple. There is a Sikh Gurdwara and several Taoist Tai Chi centers. The East Valley Center for Spiritual Living is founded on the teachings of Ernest Holmes and other New Thought writers. Followers of pagan teachings can connect through the American Ring of Wisdom Temple.

Dine out! Mesa delivers every taste and every flavor on the culinary scene Craving a great dining experience? Whether you’re snagging a fast meal for one, planning a romantic dinner for two or need to feed a crowd, Mesa’s culinary scene delivers on all counts with independently owned standouts like Mango’s Mexican Café and Flancer’s Restaurant to delish chain options like Cracker Barrel, Carraba’s Italian Grill and Texas Roadhouse. Still hungry for more? We whipped together this menu of options to highlight some other tasty local faves:
Care for a song (and maybe a dance) with that?
• Whether you’re a longtime Valley resident, a new transplant to the area or a winter visitor, there are two must-try spots, the first one being Organ Stop Pizza. Enjoy pizza, pasta, salads, sandwiches and more while listening to musicians play tunes old and new on “the Mighty Wurlitzer,” a pipe organ with nearly 6,000 pipes, making it the world’s largest Wurlitzer theatre organ. • For a more rustic-themed, must-see experience, make your way to the Mining Camp Restaurant, a seasonal venue near the Superstition Mountains. Dinner-and-show packages are offered three times daily, Monday through Saturday (show-only options are available, but call ahead to reserve your seat), while Sundays are reserved for meals only. Family-style main courses include roast chicken, roast sirloin of beef, oven-baked ham or BBQ beef ribs, and “fixin’s” like cole slaw, oven-browned potatoes and baked beans. After the meal, in-house entertainers or celebrity performers take the stage and get everyone’s toes a-tappin’. 48 | Mesa Chamber Business and Resource Guide

How about a little slice of history?
• The pretty red building in which The Landmark Restaurant is housed dates back to 1908, when the structure served as a Mormon church. Today it’s not only on the National Register of Historic Places, but home to, among other things, the restaurant’s renowned salad room. Along with serving up hearty lunches and dinners, the Landmark also hosts weddings, banquets, receptions and private parties. • For a laidback cup of coffee, a tasty chicken curry sandwich (a signature item) or, yes, even a wedding and a reception, try Inside the Bungalow in the downtown area. This leafy eatery is comprised of two historic bungalow-style homes and, whenever possible, features natural and organic menu items.
Want to throw in some spice?
• OK, so the blue-roofed, A-frame building doesn’t exactly read “New Mexican cuisine,” but the Hatch red and green chili sauces on everything from enchiladas to quesadillas sure does. The Original Blue Adobe Grille also features Sunday breakfast. • If you’re hankering for a different kind of Southern spice, mosey on over to Dickey’s Barbecue Pit, where the meat selection includes Texas-style chopped beef brisket, spicy cheddar sausage, barbecue, honey ham and “old recipe” Polish sausage as well as jalapeno beans and fried okra.
Museum opens window to past Baseball and weird turn-of-the-century gizmos are featured in two entertaining and educational exhibits at the Mesa Historical Museum’s downtown location. “Play Ball: The Cactus League Experience” celebrates the league, which first took root in 1945 when the Cleveland Indians persuaded the New York Giants to join them in Arizona for spring training. This exhibit reveals never-before-displayed images, behind-the-scenes documents and lots of cool and rare memorabilia, with materials Major League Baseball’s Cooperstown Museum only wished it had. A Cub’s uniform from the 30s, equipment from Buckhorn Baths where the Giants stayed and a grapefruit signed by Sammy Sosa are some of the hundreds of items that take the young and young-at-heart on a fascinating baseball journey. “Curiosity Cabinet” gives visitors a peek at life in the late 1800s and early 1900s through strange gizmos and devices that were part of everyday life. Take a look in the cabinet and see if you can guess how that odd hook or dangerous-looking electric rod could have been used back in the day. The museum is working with the City of Mesa to relocate in July 2015 to the former Post Office building in downtown Mesa, which is currently being renovated. In addition to

LAS SENDAS GOLF CLUB
LIFESTYLE
Designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr., Las Sendas Golf Club in Mesa is widely considered to be one of the top golf courses in the Valley.
View to a tee Linked by their unparalleled view of the East Valley, Mesa’s top golf courses offer two strikingly different approaches. BY JIMMY MAGAHERN The one thing Mesa’s two top golf courses have in common is their shared greatest asset: a spectacular view of north Mesa. At the right time of day — which can actually happen several times a day in this tranquil, sun-blessed region — a view from either Longbow or Las Sendas can encompass all the colors in the rainbow: sparking blue ponds lined with white wind-raked sands, layered with acres of spring green hills rolling up to majestic red mountains — all topped by the unmatchable orange and purple hues of a fluffy cloud-dappled Arizona sunset. 50 | Mesa Chamber Business and Resource Guide
Choose your challenge
But beyond the views, Longbow and Las Sendas can be fundamentally different experiences. Nestled in the foothills of Usery Mountain, Las Sendas Golf Club is, at its core, a community course, the pride and joy of the residential community that surrounds it. Rescued from the recession slump by two Canadian brothers — one, former NHL pro Wayne McBean, who happened to live on the 16th hole and was tired of its bare-bones clubhouse — Las Sendas today
World-class views
Both approaches have their charms. Las Sendas gets a lot of love from its community, which keeps its tee-sheets booked and its patio bar hopping with entertainment six nights a week. “These homeowners finally got to have what they expected all along when they moved in: a world-class golf course,” McBean says.
“And they’ve done for us what we did for them. The love goes both ways.” At Longbow, however, with its rolling greens unobstructed by rivulets of high-dollar homes, you get a better view of the other golfers on the course — which is, after all, the community serious golfers crave most. “We get players of all calibers,” Larscheid says. “We have tee options for every level of golfer.” Either way, you’re guaranteed that unparalleled view of the far-eastern tip of the Valley of the Sun. “The elevations here are so good,” McBean says. “All we’ve done is throw a rainbow up over it, and lift away the grey cloud the economy had left over the last five or six years.”

LONGBOW GOLF CLUB
is known as much for its fine restaurants as for its Robert Trent Jones-designed golf course. “Not everybody golfs,” explains older brother Lloyd McBean, himself a former PGA pro golfer, who estimates the renovated property brings in twice as much revenue annually from its restaurant, sports grill and open patio lounge than it does from golfing. “But everybody eats!” Less than four miles to the west, Longbow, on the other hand, is what’s called a core golf course: nothing but golf, with no homes marring the landscape. “You don’t see that a lot anymore,” says Jay Larscheid, Longbow’s General Manager. “It’s just golf out here. We basically don’t have anything around us. The course is not winding through homes. When you arrive out here, it’s just an extraordinary desert links-style golf course.”

The future of Mesa 5 bright lights for Mesa
BY KERRY HAMILTON
Mesa’s forward-thinking economic plan is giving the city much to celebrate in the near future:
1
A HOME RUN — The grand opening of Riverview Park, home to the Chicago Cubs’ new
training facility, is scheduled for late 2013. Reminiscent of Wrigley Field, the new ballpark and clubhouse will expand the already vibrant Mesa Riverview retail and entertainment complex and attract additional development to this diamond of a destination near the 101 and 202 freeways. In 2015, Hohokam Park will complete $20 million in renovations to welcome the Oakland A’s to their new home. APPLE OF MESA’S EYE — Apple, ultimate innovator and maker of the iconic iPhone, iPad and Mac devices, will root its high-tech glass manufacturing facility in the heart of Mesa Gateway. Apple’s presence in Mesa is anticipated to create at least 700 jobs directly and employ an additional 1,300 others involved in construction and development of its new facility.
2
ALL ABOARD — Mesa’s light rail line will extend along Main Street to Mesa Drive by 2015, and to Gilbert Road by 2018. The nearly $350 million investment, comprising federal, state and municipal funds, will stimulate additional commercial investment and connect even more Mesa residents with the metro-Phoenix area.
3
A GRAND-NEW CAMPUS — Based on rising demand, Grand Canyon University is scrapping its original plans for a 1,500-student East Valley campus and instead has announced its new campus will accommodate 10,000 students. The university’s second location will also feature a $35 million dormitory near Mesa Gateway’s master-planned Eastmark community.
4
5
TAKING FLIGHT — The Mesa Gateway Logistics and Commerce District, adjacent to
Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport, will welcome Matheson Tri-Gas in 2014, an industrial gas supplier that provides essential resources to manufacturing and healthcare companies. Positioning entities like Matheson Tri-Gas in the district promises to have other companies flying to invest in Mesa Gateway.
