Meet Vivian Kineman Confident grandmother beats breast cancer twice BY B RIAN SODOMA
V
ivian Kineman is ready to take a few Arizona road trips. She moved from Tennessee to the Grand Canyon state in 2013, but has battled breast cancer twice in that short time. It put a damper on her ability to explore Arizona, but she’s now cancerfree and ready to hit the road. She says family support and a great care team are the reasons she was always con ident she’d beat cancer, even through the ups and downs of her journey. “Arizona, I believe, is where God put me, because I received the best medical care possible. Banner MD Anderson has been absolutely wonderful,” she added.
Double trouble
drug, Taxol, and came down with pneumonia. Having to cut that regimen short, she had a moment of doubt during her second cancer ight. “The doctor reassured me, I’d be OK because the next treatments were the most important,” Kineman recalled. After chemotherapy, she needed 30 rounds of radiation treatment. She said staff monitored the shrinking tumor’s progress
“Arizona, I believe, is where God put me, because I received the best medical care possible. Banner MD Anderson has been absolutely wonderful.” — VIVIAN KINEMAN
Kineman, 56, has no family history of breast cancer. So, in March 2014 she was stunned when a cancerous lump was discovered in her left breast following a routine mammogram. Under the care of Mary Cianfrocca, DO, a medical oncologist at Banner MD Cancer Center in Gilbert, Kineman underwent a lumpectomy and had several underarm lymph nodes removed. Radiation treatment was also needed, but she was cancer-free by November 2014. However, on her last check-up needed to con irm the cancer was gone, Cianfrocca found another cancerous lump, this time in the right breast. “This one was a lot worse. It was very aggressive. It had come on in about eight months. … I’m so grateful she decided to check instead of waiting another six months. I hate to think of how far along it would have been, if she didn’t,” the survivor explained. For the second bout, Kineman had an allergic reaction to the chemotherapy
and updated her weekly. “Every Tuesday, they’d tell me how I was doing.” Cancer-free since May, for the next ive years Kineman will take Arimidex medicine that helps block the hormones that allow breast cancer to spread.
Support system Kineman’s family and friends were pillars during her cancer journey. Her daughter, a nurse in New Jersey, and grandchildren came from out of town to help, and local friends were a constant positive presence, she says. “I tell people to seek out all the support you can get … and know you’re going to get through it. Banner MD Anderson also offers lots of support through classes and groups,” she noted. In addition to exploring Arizona, she’s looking forward to future family visits that are a lot less stressful. “Life is short. You just have to appreciate being together,” she added.

Behind the Scenes Meet Race Manager Zachary Singh, the man behind the Race
Z
achary Singh leads the team behind the Race’s 23rd year as Susan G. Komen® Central and Northern Arizona's (Komen® CAN AZ) Race Manager. Singh joined Komen CAN AZ three years ago as the Race intern as a senior from Northern Arizona University, becoming the full-time manager in 2013. He continues to help ight breast cancer because his mother, Jackie Singh, was diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer when he was a junior at Mountain Pointe High School. At a time when most kids were focused on fun, Singh was facing some real fears. Thankfully, his mother’s treatment was successful. Jackie remains cancer-free seven years later. The experience changed Zach’s life forever and motivated him to pursue more ways to help those struggling with breast cancer. For the Singh family, the Komen Phoenix Race for the Cure® is an annual cause for celebration. “There is an indescribable feeling that people experience when they participate in the Race,” said Singh. “It is both a time of celebration and a time of remembrance. There is also a sense of coming together with others to ight this disease and ind the cures. “ Together with his mother, they will join an anticipated 13,000 people who will either run, walk, or sleep-in on October 11 for the 23rd Annual Komen Phoenix Race. We talked to Zachary Singh about his experience with this year’s Race. Here is a “behind-the-scenes” look at how he makes the Race happen: When do you start preparing for the Race? We are always focused on developing the next year's Race strategy. However, my focus on the Race is heaviest from May through Race Day in October.
What is the irst thing you do to begin prepping for the Race? The irst thing we do is set up online registration, secure sponsorships to support the Race and begin promoting the event to encourage registrations. How many volunteers do you train and what is the process? We have a large group of volunteers join our Race Committee every year. The Race Committee helps recruit people to register and fundraise, schedule the entertainment, plan the survivor area, host in-person registrations throughout the valley and handle the logistics of the event. They really help make the Race the success that it is! What is a fact about the Race that most people don’t know. We are very proud that the Race is green! We created a partnership with Keep Phoenix Beautiful in coordination with all of our sponsors, volunteers and participants. We divert over 50 percent of our waste to be recycled. After using your water bottles and paper on Race Day, you can discard it in a recycling container and feel con ident that it will not go into a land ill! How many people including volunteers work on Race day? It takes more than 700 people to put on the event the day of the Race. We rely on the efforts of everyone who continue to make the Race happen year after year.
Why do you Race for More? “I race for more good news. Stories of survival, news of battles won and victories over insurmountable odds. News of advancements in treatment, early diagnosis and communities fighting this battle together!” – K A R E N E M E R Y, S U R V I V O R
What does it take to be a Race Manager? The role of Race Manager for Komen CAN AZ takes a lot of organization, planning, lexibility and most importantly, passion for the event! I love planning the Race. It’s something that I enjoy doing and it’s rewarding to see everyone on Race Day in such a spirited atmosphere.

Komen CAN AZ encourages each Race for the Cure participant to raise $100 — the approximate cost of providing one mammogram to an underserved community member. While it can be dif icult to ask for donations, these tips will make it easier. Don’t forget the No. 1 rule: Know and Tell how donations affect the community. Share statistics from komenCANaz.org and forward emails from Komen CAN AZ showing the dollars at work. Here are our favorite ways to FUNDRAISE. For more ideas, please visit komenCANaz.org/inspire.

Celebration Tree New to Komen Phoenix Race for the Cure Life is about celebrating all experiences faced every day both big and small. The Komen Phoenix Race for the Cure® Survivor Committee is building a Celebration Tree to recognize the amazing lives of women and men in the community with breast cancer diagnoses. This tree will serve as a place for Race participants to write a message of love, hope and inspiration on a ‘leaf’ to hang in the tree. The Celebration Tree honors those who lost their battle to breast cancer and celebrates the surviving warriors among us. Each life is a work of art, and the resulting work on the tree will stand as a symbol for the community’s collective strength as well as an inspiration to anyone who feels alone or scared in the face of a dif icult diagnosis. In addition to the tree, last year’s Memories of a Lifetime Wall will return for Race participants to take their photo as a backdrop full of inspirational quotes.
