Fuel up with a healthy, portable snack

ontrary to popular belief (especially in the diet and nutrition realm), snacking can be a valuable part of healthy eating plan. Small bites spread throughout the day can keep blood sugar levels stable and help prevent overeating later in the day.

The key to getting the most out of snacking is making sure you choose the right foods. Whether you need a pick-me-up during a long day at the office or some added fuel to tackle a brisk walk or hike, nosh on nutritionally-balanced snacks that contain some carbs, protein and healthy fats.

Also choose foods that are easy to pack. Use plastic zipper bags or poptop containers for convenience and easy clean up.

Better snacking Bonnie Taub-Dix, a registered dietician nutritionist and author of “Read it Before You Eat It,” says snacks should have three crucial ingredients—protein, carbohydrates and fat—for longer-lasting energy.

She offers these suggestions for better snacking on the go:

A healthier chip If you love chips, choose ones that are baked or made with whole grains.

Pair them with a dip you make yourself using onion soup mix and plain Greek yogurt.

In the raw

Smooth sailing

For a healthier alternative to chips, dunk raw chopped carrots, cucumber, jicama or sugar snap peas in your homemade dip or yogurt. This packs more punch, crunch, nutrients and fiber.

Store-bought smoothies are often made with sugars and syrups that can send blood sugar levels soaring and dipping. Instead, blend your own using fresh fruit like bananas, strawberries and mango. Then finish it off with Greek yogurt, skim milk and ice.

Raise the bar Often filled with sugar, some energy bars can zap your energy rather than give you fuel. Read the ingredients and make sure it contains a combination of protein (at least 4 to 5 grams), healthy fats (from nuts, not trans fats) and carbs (from whole grain and fruits, not sugars).

Go nuts Stock your desk drawers, glove box, purse or briefcase with packets of raw nuts, such as almonds and walnuts.

Or pair nut butter with apple slices and whole grain crackers. The fiber, healthy fat and protein will keep hunger at bay.

Yogurt on the go Compact and portable, yogurt is a great and versatile snack. Opt for Greek yogurt, which contains twice the filling proteins of regular yogurt.

For a more satisfying and healthy treat, add fresh fruit or chopped nuts to boost nutrients.

Cut mini whole-wheat pita in half. Spread 1-1/2 teaspoons hummus over each half; top each half with 2 basil leaves and 1 plum tomato slice.

NUTS AND BOLTS TRAIL MIX 1/2 cup unsalted mixed nuts 2-1/2 cups multigrain toasted oat cereal 1/2 cup dried cherries 1/2 cup M&M’s 1 cup mini pretzel twists 1 cup whole-grain cheddar Goldfish crackers Combine nuts, cereal, dried cherries, M&M’s, pretzel twists, and Goldfish crackers. Portion into 1/2 cup servings.

CRANBERRY-PISTACHIO ENERGY BARS 1 cup uncooked old-fashioned rolled oats 3/4 cup uncooked quinoa 3/4 cup sweetened dried cranberries, chopped 1/2 cup salted, dry-roasted pistachios, chopped 1/3 cup baked unsweetened coconut 2 tbsp. flaxseed meal 1 oz. bittersweet chocolate, finely chopped 1/2 cup unsalted creamy almond butter 6 tbsp. agave nectar 1 tbsp. canola oil 1/4 tsp. salt Cooking spray Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Spread oats and quinoa on a baking sheet.

Bake for 8 minutes or until lightly browned. Cool. Place oat mixture in a large bowl and stir in cranberries, pistachios, coconut, flaxseed meal, and chocolate. Combine almond butter, agave, oil, and salt in a small saucepan over medium heat; bring to a boil. Cook 1 minute, stirring constantly. Pour almond butter mixture over oat mixture; toss well to coat. Press mixture into an 8-inch square glass or ceramic baking dish coated with cooking spray. Bake for 13 minutes or until lightly browned.

Cool completely in dish. Cut evenly into 16 (1x4-inch) bars.

Arizona offers skiing for all ages, experience levels

T

he mention of Arizona brings high temperatures and barren deserts to mind. Unbeknownst to many, the Grand Canyon State actually has some pretty impressive ski spots. Although this snow season is not seeing the heaviest snowfall, there is still some powder to dig your skis into.

Known for offering the largest beginner terrain in the Southwest, Arizona Snowbowl is a ski resort located in the San Francisco Peaks that has it all. Visitors can enjoy eight different lifts and 55 trails. It is also home to Arizona’s first and only high-speed 6-person lift. Whether you are a first-time skier or a seasoned professional, there is something for everybody. Snowbowl offers top-tier ski rentals, instructors for every level and plenty of restaurants and nearby lodges for a quick rest between ski runs.

“With excellent learning terrain and certified, bilingual instructors, Snowbowl is the perfect place for first-timers learning how to ski or snowboard,” J.R. Murray, Arizona Snowbowl general manager, said.

Located 200 miles northeast of Phoenix are Arizona’s White Mountains. This mountainous part of the state is home to a winter getaway called Sunrise Ski. The resort has three mountains: Sunrise Peak, Cyclone Peak and Apache Peak. Skiers of all levels are welcome on any of the resort’s 65 runs. Looking for a picturesque view? Then Apache Peak is what you are looking for. It sees some of the heaviest snowfall covered runs. Sunrise Mountain has the widest variety of ski trails while Cyclone Mountain is the steepest and most difficult for those looking for a real challenge. The resort’s lodge has 100 rooms and offers plenty of amenities such as dining, an indoor pool, a lounge and game room. During Arizona’s wet winters, Sunrise Ski provides some of the best skiing in the Southwest.

In the Coronado National Forest hides one of Arizona’s little know ski locations: Mt. Lemmon Ski Valley. This 200-acre spot has an elevation of 9,157 feet and receives an average of 175 inches of snow per year, and offers eight black diamond runs with unique names such as the Lemmon Drop as well as two intermediate and six beginner runs. The ski season normally runs December through March, but awesome hiking is available year-round.

“Something that is unique to Mount Lemmon Ski Valley is that it truly can be a day trip,” said Graham Davies, Mount Lemmon Ski Valley Area manager. “Skiers (and hikers) can just get in their car and be back home in the evening without having to budget for expenses like hotel and food.”

Staying fit and healthy Valley doc shares simple strategies for kickstarting a workout routine

ooking and feeling your best doesn’t always mean shelling out cash for a fancy gym membership. By adding a little exercise to your daily routine, you can get into shape—and enjoy yourself while doing it. We asked Craig Zimmerman, DC, founder of LaserTech Pain and Back Relief Center, to shed some light on the best tactics for starting a fitness routine and staying with it for the long haul.

Q: DO YOU NEED TO JOIN A GYM TO GET FIT AND HEALTHY? A: Some people feel more motivated in a gym setting, but it is not necessary to join a fancy gym to stay in shape.

The important thing is to find something that you will do consistently, whether it’s lifting weights at home, walking, running, swimming or biking.

Anything that you do regularly on a weekly basis is a smart way to go.

Q: HOW MUCH DO YOU NEED TO EXERCISE TO GET HEALTH BENEFITS? A: It’s been shown that you don’t have to work out two to three hours at a time, that 20 or 30 minutes of aerobic exercise is as good as exercising longer. Two to three days a week is a normal pattern but you can do it every day, depending on your fitness goals. The key is not how long or hard you exercise, but that you do something consistently. Moderation is the best policy.

Q: WHAT ARE SOME WAYS TO ADD EXERCISE TO YOUR DAILY ROUTINE? A: Try to park further away from your destination, walk instead of driving and take the stairs instead of the elevator.

When you’re sitting for long periods of time, get up out of your chair every 20 minutes and move. Keeping in motion not only helps you stay in shape, but it burns calories and takes stress off your body.

Q: WHAT SHOULD YOU DO TO PREPARE FOR A NEW FITNESS ROUTINE? A: Check with your medical provider before beginning any new exercise program. If you are experiencing pain from exercising, instead of working through the pain, you can see a doctor or a therapist or if you want to go after it without the use of medication or surgery, we are a great resource.

Definitely have it treated because exercising a painful area tends to create more chronic issues and more difficulties.

Q: HOW CAN I MAKE FITNESS FUN? A: Try the latest fitness gadgets to make exercise more fun and more interesting. There are technologies that track the number of steps you take, stairs you walk and calories you burn.

Exercising with a buddy or a group of people boosts accountability and can make exercising more fun.
