Ready to lead a less complicated life? When it comes to your living environment, sometimes bigger isn’t better. A smaller, more compact home offers many benefits without sacrificing comfort.
Right-sizing your lifestyle Smaller-space living can be big on benefits ! By PAULA HUBBS COHEN
P
eople at various stages of life often downsize their living spaces to a still very comfortable, yet more manageable size. For some folks, that might mean a condominium, which tend to have — but this certainly isn’t always the case — a bit less square-footage than some single-family homes. For others, downsizing might really be more about right-sizing — or right-lifestyling, depending on the circumstances — into an independent and/or assisted living community. Right-sizing your lifestyle
Cachet Homes/Scott Sandler Photography
One example of right-sizing your lifestyle into a condominium is Monterey Ridge by Cachet Homes, a gated luxury condominium community nestled on the North Phoenix/Scottsdale border. Monterey Ridge has five distinct single-level floorplans ranging in size from 1,091 to 1,870 square-feet. “Each unit includes a two-car garage and additional storage,” said Sue Goodrich, vice president of sales and marketing for Cachet Homes. Cachet builds single-family homes, townhomes and condominiums, including condos at Cachet at The Wigwam [in Litchfield Park] and Monterey Ridge. Goodrich noted that each nine-plex building at Monterey Ridge has an elevator for easy access from the garage to the front door.
“At 1,870 square-feet, our larger floorplan has room for your favorite furniture pieces.” —SUE GOODRICH, Cachet Homes A different example of right-sizing your lifestyle is The Manor Village at Scottsdale, a boutique independent and assisted living community located near Loop 101 and Shea Boulevard. Suites at The Manor Village range in size from 715 to 1,011 square-feet and include full kitchens, spacious living rooms and large bedrooms, said Shawn Halla Gallé, the community’s executive director. She added that there is also additional storage on each resident’s private balcony. RIGHT-SIZING, continued on page 8

The evolution of electric fireplaces Modern Flame products are changing the way we look at home comfort and design.
Arizona Fireplaces
Endless design options for every living space By MEGHANN FINN SEPULVEDA
A
fireplace is often the focal point of a home, adding that extra touch of warmth and creating a more inviting space. Electric fireplaces are versatile and energy efficient and are a great alternative to traditional wood-burning or gas fireplaces, which can be costly, require maintenance and even emit harmful fumes. Modern Flames, a leading electric fireplace manufacturer, offers their award-winning innovative products through local distributor Arizona Fireplaces.
Achieving the look For many homeowners, especially those who live in the Valley, a fireplace is more about creating ambience than generating heat. That’s why Modern Flames, which launched in 2008, developed a series of electric fireplaces, including the newest FusionFire™ Steam Fireplace. “We recently redesigned our linear electric fireplace so it is now three-dimensional and has a more realistic feel,” said Elliott White, marketing manager for Modern Flames. “It’s an affordable option for individuals who want a fireplace in
their home because it doesn’t require a gas line or venting system.” The FusionFire Steam Fireplace uses innovative steam flame technology that projects and illuminates a life-like flame onto an LED light curtain and a glass face that is cool to the touch. The fireplace is operated through a hand-held remote or can be controlled via touch pad and features six adjustable flame heights, speed and style settings ranging from smoky to robust. “This fully built-in fireplace can be installed during new home construction or after market as an upgrade option and is essentially maintenance-free with minimal usage costs,” White said.
opposed to gas fireplaces,” White said. “Because of the unique development and design of the FusionFire Steam fireplace, the flame is so vibrant that it provides a very natural look.” Modern Flames also offers electric fireplaces for outdoor use, including the NOVA Recessed Indoor/Outdoor Electric Fireplace, which is fully enclosed and able to withstand weather elements such as heat and rain. Later this year, Modern Flames will introduce a contemporary alternative see-through linear electric fireplace series for ultimate entertaining.

Creating ambience The FusionFire Steam Fireplace, along with the many other electric fireplaces designed by Modern Flames, range in size and can be easily customized and installed nearly anywhere in a home. Driftwood logs, coal and glacier crystals, along with a heating system, are a few of the available options that add to the overall appearance and functionality of an electric fireplace. “We are noticing a trend among many Arizona homeowners who are seeking electric fireplaces as

New year, EAT By DEBRA GELBART
Right
t the start of every year, almost all of us try to be healthier eaters. But that doesn’t mean you have to deprive yourself of the foods you love, even if you suspect they aren’t the most beneficial for your nutrition. The registered dietitians and nutrition specialists at Pinnacle Prevention, a Chandler-based nonprofit committed to building healthy communities by improving access to nutritious food, offer their advice for a feel-good approach to food in 2018: Adrienne Udarbe, a registered dietitian-nutritionist (RDN) and executive director for Pinnacle Prevention: “As you start the new year don’t use food as punishment or reward. Nurture a healthy relationship with food by being a ‘competent eater.’ Eating competence means having a positive attitude about eating and
A
food. Trust your internal cues of hunger and fullness to eat a variety of different foods and taking the time to eat and enjoy meals with those you love.” Kathleen Carlson, RDN and project manager/evaluator: “Take some time to reflect on what your body has done for you in 2017. All of your living, working, playing this year was done in your amazing body. When you are eating in the new year think about choosing foods that help your body feel good, that give you energy and bring you joy.” Jaclyn Chamberlain, RDN and project manager: “Don’t vow to make a new you. Make it the year you celebrate you. Give yourself permission to eat what you love, to move in a way that brings you joy and strength, and to not hold yourself to impossible standards or strive for perfection.

Don’t eat things that don’t make you feel good, mentally or physically. And take time to enjoy meals with family and friends, savor each bite and, above all, eat when you are hungry, and stop when you are full, before the point of discomfort.” Jessie Gruner, RDN and project manager: “A healthy diet has room for all foods. Instead of focusing on foods to REMOVE from your diet, focus on healthy foods to ADD to your diet, like fruits and vegetables. Small, simple, sustainable changes are going to have the best long-term results. Find things you can do for the rest of your life and concentrate on those (hint: If you cut out all sugar and carbs for 30 days, you might see some initial success, but you
will likely be grouchy and chances are the initial results diminish as soon as you start eating sugar and carbs again).” Cynthia Melde, nutrition specialist and project manager: “With the new year, we always find a new cooking challenge for our family. This year we are incorporating meatless Mondays, expanding our horizons with vegetarian meals. The kids get involved picking the vegetables while shopping and even help mom and dad cook the meal. Keep in mind, kids may need to be exposed to new foods 15 times before they are willing to try it. That’s okay! With consistent exposure, by the end of the year, we hope our meals will be more colorful with new vegetables we love.”
Today, 55-plus is whatever you make it. Here’s to making it your own. Kick back and relax with family and friends and your favorite activities. Or blaze new paths through community service and renewed interests. However you define retirement, we say, “go for it.” We’ll help you achieve it with affordable, energy-efficient homes in amenitypacked neighborhoods. Tour today; homes from the low $200s.

Discovering food fantasia at Mesa’s Discovery Point By PAT WHITNEY
I
t’s not every day you hear about “buffalo chicken salad in a jar” that turns an easyto-make salad on its head! Or, a “guiltless double-chocolate cheesecake” that’s both gluten-free and sugar-free. Especially at a retirement community known for its largely octogenarian “meat and potatoes” clientele. But that’s exactly what you can expect at Mesa’s Discovery Point Retirement Community where food director Ginger Buck creates both flavorful and healthy breakfasts and dinners for residents. An accomplished baker, she’s famous for her Tiger cake and gourmet cupcakes made special for each resident’s birthday. But Buck is creating new audiences with her “food shows,” which have expanded to six other Mesa senior communities. “I introduce the latest food trends (like those trending on Pinterest) and use interactive skits to provide colorful food presentations,” Buck says. A recent presentation highlighted buffalo chicken salad in a jar. Buck suggests starting with dressing at the bottom; adding chopped tomatoes, celery and carrots; beans and/or corn; a grain like quinoa with a final layer of chopped lettuce. “Store in a sealed mason jar in the refrigerator three to five days. Shake and pour out a perfect salad whenever you need it,” she says. Executive director Alice Arambul says Buck’s food shows have created quite a following. “She’s become a celebrity of sorts.” Native New Yorker Sue Blessing would agree. It’s what brought her to Discovery Point. Last February, Blessing’s daughter, Sheri DeSimone, a resident at Mesa’s Palmas del Sol, invited her mother to attend

a food demonstration during her visit from New York. She suggested her mother take a look at Discovery Point where DeSimone had met Buck during food demonstrations. “I liked it from the get-go,” Blessing says. “I moved here last August. My daughter and I love attending Ginger’s food demonstrations. I have met Ginger’s entire family and have shared my Italian sauce recipe

that goes back generations with her. I used to sell the sauce for $5 a jar and donate the money to the church.” Now, Blessing’s gifting Buck her prized recipe for use in future food demonstrations—in exchange for the kindness she has found at Discovery Point. “I just love it here,” she says. A blessing indeed.

We’re building more patio homes in the neighborhood north of Beatitudes Campus. If you’re inspired by a vibrant and diverse social life and lifelong learning opportunities, and you appreciate the value of planning ahead, we would love to be your neighbor.
While condominium communities often tout their walkability scores — meaning how close they are to lifestyle amenities such as shopping, dining and recreation venues — independent/assisted living communities are more often about their on-property services and amenities. For example, Goodrich said that Monterey Ridge is within walking distance of several restaurants, theaters and shopping venues. It also enjoys easy access to the Loop 101 freeway which makes it an ideal setting for young professionals as well as empty-nesters. Meanwhile, The Manor Village at Scottsdale features a variety of wellness and fitness programs as well as plenty of excursions, on-site activities and amenities including a store/café, library, fitness center, theater, multiple game/ lounge areas and a lovely dining room.
Critical design attributes
Beatitudes Campus is a life plan community and a not-for-profit ministry of the Church of the Beatitudes. AR-0008752845-01
Although differing in residential focus, when it comes to designing their respective living spaces, both types of communities are in agreement that in smaller-space living, ease of movement, a warm and inviting décor, functionality and personalization are all critical design attributes. Indeed, at Monterey Ridge, the condominiums are designed so that each floorplan is on a corner of the building, allowing ample light when paired with big windows and sliding doors. Kitchen design is also paramount at Monterey Ridge. “We know that the kitchen is the focal point of the home and we work with our architects to make sure the layout is efficient,” Goodrich said. “Our kitchens are designed with nice counterspace, cabinetry and pantries, some of which are larger than in a single-family home.”
At The Manor Village, the building was designed to maximize livable space in each suite, said Georgette Kelly, sales and marketing director. To optimize internal space, each kitchen comes with a ‘lazy susan’ and each suite includes a stackable washer/ dryer. “We also have a multitude of common-area amenity spaces that we view as extensions of the residents’ homes,” Kelly said.
The bottom line No matter your lifestyle, smaller-space living can be very comfortable, stress-free and enticing. Experts advise that in order to decide what’s best for your personal situation, you should: • Assess your current as well as longerterm circumstances • Evaluate what location and amenities are important to you • Do extensive research Then: move forward and enjoy the next phase of your life!
