WELCOME TO

GOODYEAR, ARIZONA! A city continuing to take flight on possibilities turned realities

J

ust five years ago, the slogan in the City of Goodyear was “Imagine the Possibilities.”

Many of those possibilities have become realities in the city that has more than doubled from 33,500 residents more than 10 years ago to 70,000 today, making Goodyear one of the fastest-growing cities in the country.

Gaining national attention as a city that is the Spring Training home to two Major League Baseball teams — the Cincinnati Reds and the Cleveland Indians — Goodyear has been recognized as an All-American City and one of the best cities to live in America.

Just 14 miles west of Phoenix and 23 miles from Phoenix’s Sky Harbor International

Airport (about a 20-minute drive), Goodyear is deep-rooted in its past yet remains steadfast in moving toward a prosperous future.

Nestled between the Sierra Estrella Mountains to the south, the White Tank Mountains to the northwest and divided by Interstate 10 and the forthcoming Loop 303 highway expansion, Goodyear is well positioned for success. It holds a diverse range of activities for its residents and visitors including some of the best scenic desert hiking trails in the region.

The city is named after Charles Goodyear, the founder of the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. in Akron, Ohio. In 1916, he sent company executive Paul Litchfield to Arizona to seek out land that would be conducive to growing cotton used in the rubber for tires the company produced initially for airplanes during World War I and later, automobiles.

Today, the crown jewel in the center of the city is Goodyear Ballpark. The ballpark, which is part of a 100-acre Spring Training facility complex, is expected to be the nucleus of development. AeroTurbine is one of the largest employers at the Phoenix-Goodyear Airport and performs maintenance on and reconditions aircraft from around the world.

Just to the north of I-10 along McDowell Road between PebbleCreek Parkway and Bullard Avenue is the site of the future 1.1 million sq. ft.

In addition to the dawn-to-dusk sunshine, Goodyear boasts quality healthcare in the Cancer Treatment Centers of America and West Valley Hospital, upscale lodging and nearby world-class resorts, especially within the historic and rustic Wigwam Resort and Golf Course in neighboring Litchfield Park.

All you have to do is follow the tall palm trees lining North Litchfield Road and you’ll find your way there.

This past year, businesses such as Dick’s Sporting Goods Distribution Center have opened. Macy’s Online Fulfillment Center is expanding and the city’s major healthcare facilities such as Cancer Treatment Centers of America and West Valley Hospital also are expanding.

With Luke Air Force Base nearby and the quadron expansion of the F-35A II Fighter Pilot training program, the defense and aerospace industry in Goodyear also remains vital to the city’s success. The region will attract support businesses for Luke AFB, which the city fully supports along with its members of the military who call Goodyear home.

There is no better time than the present for Goodyear to keep taking flight on possibilities that continue to become its realities.

Here are some interesting things to know about Goodyear As people from around the world continue to visit Goodyear, there are a number of interesting facts about the city of more than 70,000 that visitors passing through may or may not know. n The City of Goodyear is named after Charles Goodyear, the founder of the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. in Akron, Ohio.

n Goodyear played a key role in the country’s defense efforts during World War I and World War II. During World War I, the cotton

fields in Goodyear yielded more than crops for the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. that were used in most of the rubber in the majority of tires for 11,000 airplanes.

During World War II, Goodyear Aircraft Corp. manufactured more than three million pounds of aircraft frames. n Goodyear Aircraft Corp. was where some of the famous Goodyear Blimps were manufactured that hovered over the Rose and Orange Bowl football games and the Indianapolis 500.

n Goodyear played a key role in a Thanksgiving Day tradition in the 1950s. A group of women who worked at Goodyear Aircraft in Arizona manufactured the huge balloons of cartoon

characters that hovered above floats at the Macy’s Department Store Parade in New York. They were known as “The Balloon Ladies.” n NASA Astronaut Frank Borman, who led the first team of American Astronauts to circle the moon as the commander of the 1968 Apollo 8 Mission, moved to

PLAYING BALL Spring Training at Goodyear Ballpark comes of age

E

very year since 2009, it has been like Old Home Week at Goodyear Ballpark during late winter and early spring.

Thousands of baseball fans and families from across the nation converge on the Grand Canyon State.

In Goodyear, Arizona, many fans arrive from the cozy confines of large cities and small rural towns in Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana to see the teams they root for — the Cleveland Indians and the Cincinnati Reds.

Goodyear Ballpark at 1933 South Ballpark Way is where the Reds — baseball’s oldest professional team — and the Indians — Arizona’s first Spring Training team, in 1947 — begin their march through a new baseball season with the hopes of making it into the post-season playoffs and perhaps win a World Series.

Goodyear Ballpark and Recreational Complex is the crown jewel of the city, a $120 million facility in the center of the city and just two miles south of Interstate 10.

The ballpark is just minutes from the city’s

retail corridor that provides some of the best shopping, dining and lodging in the Valley.

In addition to the amenities and quality of life Goodyear provides for its citizens and visitors, Goodyear Ballpark has been voted as the Best Place to see a Spring Training Game.

During the 2013 Spring Training season, it was evident that Goodyear came of age as a spring training town when an attendance record (11,023) was set during a night game on Saturday, March 16 when the Cleveland Indians hosted the San Francisco Giants.

PLAYING BALL Goodyear Ballpark as ticket sales increased 6 percent from the previous year and saw a near 30 percent jump over the last two years.

Providing a “hometown feel” for the fans as vendors feature fan favorites such as Bertman’s Ballpark Mustard for Indians’ fans and Skyline Chili hot dogs for Reds’ fans, each year, the Spring Training experience in Goodyear always adds something new.

Along the right field line near the concourse, Goodyear Ballpark provides the largest free play area for kids among all of the

Spring Training parks throughout the Valley.

Groups also can rent a luxury suite or join the party in the Right Field Pavilion where game tickets include unlimited food and non-alcoholic beverages.

But it is no secret — fans for both the Reds and Indians are hungry to see their team win a World Championship. The Reds last won one in 1990; the Indians in 1948 — when pitching great “Rapid Robert” Bob Feller threw a fastball past a motorcycle reaching a speed of 100 mph.

The hope for those teams springs eternal with the fans longing to see the Indians or Reds bring a World Series trophy home.

Ground was broken on the 10,000-seat Goodyear Ballpark in 2007 with the Indians first playing Spring Training games here in 2009. The Reds then followed suit in 2010, leaving the state of Florida, where they had trained since the 1930s. Arizona does not have the vast beaches and ocean like Florida does, but it is home to many natural breath-taking sites including one of the Seven Wonders of the World in the Grand Canyon. The state also features numerous lakes that provide some of the best fishing around.

And you can’t leave out the must-do drive north along Route 89A through Sedona and into Oak Creek Canyon — just follow the

Red Rocks north to the smell of the pine trees and the sight of the elk herds at the foot of Flagstaff — one of the most Scenic Drives in America, according to road atlas publisher Rand McNally.

While there is beauty in the depths of the Grand Canyon all the way to Phantom Ranch along the Colorado River and Oak Creek Canyon north of Sedona, the interest in Spring Training in Goodyear continues rising to new heights.

Baseball in Cincinnati and Cleveland — and now in Goodyear, is a common denominator, linking generations of families and friends and helping bond the communities who rally around them.

And like a fine wine, it’s only going to get better with age.

Seeing Red! Watch your teams train and see the stars of tomorrow

B

eginning in February, fans can turn out on the practice fields early in the morning at the 100-acre complex along Wood Boulevard south of Goodyear Ballpark and watch the Cincinnati Reds or Cleveland Indians exercise and begin training for another season.

And it’s free to see and open to the public.

But here in Arizona — the baseball hub of the nation — player development is an ongoing process throughout the year and goes way beyond the Spring Training season.

Goodyear Ballpark’s training complex remains a place where fans can continue watching the Reds and Indians develop the stars of the future through Extended Spring Training. Extended Spring Training includes development and rehabilitation in the months following the Spring Training season as teams are beginning their regular

season. It is followed by the Arizona Rookie League and the Arizona Instructional League throughout the summer and fall.

The Arizona Rookie League begins in late June and lasts through late August. The league consists of the 15 Major League teams who train in Arizona, featuring 35-man rosters of players with no more than two years of Minor League playing experience.

After the Arizona Rookie League, fans also can watch players in the Arizona Instructional League, which begins in midSeptember and lasts through mid-October.

The league provides players the opportunity to hone their skills with the hopes of earning spots on Major League rosters.

Come to practice — and the games.

LIVING A DREAM Reds and Indians Baseball Fantasy Camps in Goodyear give fans an opportunity to play alongside their heroes

W

here have you gone, Jim Maloney and Max Alvis?

The heroes of your childhood haven’t vanished. Many of them have become grandfathers and now are playing in the Fantasy Camps hosted by your favorite Major League teams before the Spring Training season — camps consisting of former Big Leaguers spanning back half a century and baseball fans who want to revisit their youth.

And you can play alongside and rub elbows with them after the sun sets on a day of playing baseball at Goodyear Ballpark’s practice fields during the week of fun and camaraderie. The camps include opening night meet and greets, pick-up games, “Kangaroo Court,” and a championship game between the top two teams of campers before playing the former Major Leaguers.

But register for the Fantasy Camps early.

The 2014 Indians camp (Jan. 18-25) and the 2014 Reds camp (Feb. 1-8), both sold out days after the dates and prices were announced

in the spring of 2013. But you can be ready to play ball when the camp schedules are released for the 2015 Fantasy Camps in the spring.

Since the Indians and Reds began hosting the camp in 2009 and 2010, respectively, more than 1,000 “Fantasy Campers” (men and women 30 and older) and their families from around the United States have converged on Goodyear. The campers participate in what many have described as a “once-in-a-lifetime” opportunity while wearing the number of their favorite player on the back of their jersey.

Players such as Jim Maloney, Lee May, Doug Flynn, Jack Billingham and Billy Hatcher coach the camp for the Reds and Jim “Mudcat” Grant, Max Alvis, Gary Bell, “Super Joe” Charboneau and Mike Hargrove are among the coaches for the Indians’ campers.

In 2011 at the age of 64, Bob Harshbarger of rural Greenville, Ohio, said he had read about the camp and finally decided to participate after his wife encouraged him to.

He enjoyed the camp so much, he returned in 2012 and played on the team coached by former Reds Billy Hatcher and Tom Hume that won the camp’s championship.

“Being able to walk on a professional field wearing a professional uniform and playing alongside professional players you grew up watching is hard to describe,” Harshbarger said. “It’s just incredible. I had read about the camp, but never gave it serious thought because of my age. I didn’t want to do anything to look foolish, but the camp isn’t anything like that. No one’s skill level is judged, and you have a lot of fun.”

Harshbarger grew up in the 1950s and 60s watching the Reds from the right field “Sun Deck” bleachers at Cincinnati’s Crosley Field. His hero was pitcher Jim Maloney — the Reds’ answer to pitching great Sandy Koufax of the Dodgers. Harshbarger is the only camper who wears No. 46 on his jersey — Maloney’s old number.

During his career, Maloney technically threw three no-hitters in the 1960s. However, in 1965, after pitching 10 innings of no-hit ball, Maloney lost, 1-0 after giving up a home run in the 10th inning — a game in which he struck out 18. Maloney also pitched five 1-hitters. Twice a 20-game winner — 23 wins and 7 losses in 1963 and 20-9 in 1965, Maloney was known to throw a fastball at 99 mph. Now 73, Maloney is a familiar presence at Fantasy Camp each year.

“I never thought I’d meet a guy whose number I wanted to wear as a Little Leaguer,” Harshbarger said.

“I always wanted to be like him. Participating in the camp is a bucket list thing. You can’t put a price on it.”

SHARE THE SECRET! Goodyear offers exemplary hiking opportunities as diverse region transforms into trail destination

A

once well-hidden secret in the City of Goodyear is beginning to get out among its visitors and residents: Goodyear and its surrounding area offer exemplary hiking opportunities as the region is preparing to connect to the Valley-wide Maricopa Trail system – more than 200 miles of trails throughout the Phoenix Metropolitan area that will be linked in future years.

Goodyear’s natural resources are allowing the city in itself to become a scenic desert hiking destination for historic trails where one can catch glimpses of wildlife such as Longhorned sheep in the southern stretches of the Sierra Estrella Mountains while also taking advantage of its urban trails in the heart of the city near its neighborhoods along the canals.

from Colorado Springs where he acquired a passion for hiking, is a consultant for the Goodyear Parks and Recreation’s Master Plan. He is mapping a trail system for the city so more people become aware of them and is making recommendations of what to implement in Goodyear’s Master Plan of future projected trails and hiking growth.

Whether it’s the trails in the Estrella Mountain Regional Park that reach through Goodyear and Avondale or the more manageable ones for less experienced hikers along the Bullard Wash or Roosevelt Canal, Coffman is quick to recognize the value of the existing trails.

“The trails in Goodyear and the surrounding area are exemplary for desert hiking,” Coffman, 56, said. “In terms of getting people outside and active, these trails are great.”

Estrella Mountain Regional Park, at 14805 W. Vineyard Avenue, became the first regional park in the Maricopa County Park System in 1954. Located near the meeting of the Gila and Agua Fria rivers in the Southwest Valley, the park’s 19,840 acres of desert and mountain terrain includes a large wetlands and riparian area.

For hikers from near and far, Estrella Mountain Regional Park truly remains on the last frontiers as it remains pristine from the time it was seen by the first settlers and explorers and today features the only grass picnic area (65 acres) in the Maricopa County Park System.

The Sierra Estrella range or Star Mountains, once was within the Mexican border and remained so until the Gadsen Purchase in 1853.

And for those who love more history along the way, there is a triple treat of a trail slightly south of Goodyear that runs east and west parallel to Route MC 238 just north of Mobile.

The trail that stretches from Tubac south of Tucson all the way to San Francisco and goes past the Sonoran Desert National Monument that is near the southwestern border of Goodyear. The three trails are known as the Juan Bautista de Anza Trail, the Mormon Battalion Trail and the Butterfield Stagecoach Route.

The Juan Bautista de Anza National Historic Trail, which dates back to 1774, is a 1,210-mile National Park Service unit in the United States National Historic Trail and National Millennium Trail programs.

“You still can see where part of the trail ran near Goodyear and still read the route,” Coffman said. “The trails and natural resources in Goodyear and their potential are phenomenal. “It’s really a great trail system and the possibilities are enormous.”

Tourists and visitors in Goodyear, and especially residents who live here should feel free to explore them and share the secret.

ATTRACTIONS

The Bible Museum A museum of reverence in Goodyear

A hidden gem remains located inside a local hotel in the City of Goodyear that is open 24 hours a day: The Goodyear Bible Museum.

Located inside an office at the Hampton Inn and Suites at 2000 North Litchfield Road, the Bible Museum is home to a collection of biblical artifacts that date back as far as 2,100 years.

Among the jewels of the collection are pieces of the Dead Sea Scrolls, a page from a Gutenberg Bible and original copies of the King James Version Bible from 1611.

The museum was started more than 25 years ago when Jonathan Byrd began studying the role Christianity played for the nation’s founding fathers.

Byrd relocated to Phoenix in the late 1990s and built several hotels throughout the Valley.

Byrd designated a room for the Hampton Inn for the collection of historically significant Bibles, he mainly purchased at auctions.

The collection now is owned by historian Craig Lampe, a business partner of Byrd.

THE PHOENIXGOODYEAR AIRPORT: A monument to the city’s past, but more importantly, a key to its future

T

he Phoenix-Goodyear Airport is a monument to the city’s past but most importantly, it holds a key to the city’s future. The airport, which turned 72 years old in 2013, was built out of the necessity of national security during World War II. With one of the largest runways in the state on a near 900-acre property, Phoenix Goodyear Airport’s 8,500 foot long runway can accommodate an aircraft as large as a Boeing 747 and Boeing 777.

Today, the Phoenix-Goodyear Airport is home to seven businesses and has an economic impact of more than $138 million annually in the Valley, $20 million more a year generated by the Deer Valley Airport in north Phoenix. The Goodyear airport sustains 500 jobs in the region and private employers there reported 218 jobs with a $32.7 million payroll. Airline Training Center of Arizona and AeroTurbine remain the largest employers at the airport.

In addition to the existing businesses, the airport is a place where more businesses can open and expand and where ideas continue to take flight. With the arrival of the F35-A Lightning II Fighter Jet pilot training program at Luke Air Force Base in 2014, the airport and the 4,000 acres of available land close to Interstate 10 and Loop 303, the city is poised and prepared to become a jobs hub.

by the airport’s fixed base operator. With the Cancer Treatment Centers of America and West Valley Hospital expanding, the opening of a Dick’s Sporting Goods Distribution Center in Goodyear in early 2013, and the announcement of a $35 million expansion project of the Macy’s Online Order Fulfillment Center, corporate flights are increasing and that spike is expected to continue.

And who would guess that Prime Solutions Group – a small defense contracting company adjacent to the airport owned by Waddell resident Joe Marvin – would be doing research that includes fine-tuning the missile defense system to better protect our nation from an attack?

So, with that said, it is evident that the importance of the Phoenix-Goodyear Airport not only has come full circle from its beginnings, but that circle remains unbroken in its importance to our city’s past and building on our future.
