4,900 customers are using Supurb to get medical marijuana delivered Tempe company taps into cannabis ‘gold rush’ GEORGANN YARA SPECIAL FOR THE ABG
Dinner, a ride and office supplies are a few touchpad clicks away. So, Jonathan Ghiz and Justin Schudel figured that the booming medical-marijuana market would be a natural fit for this on-demand model. When the two friends with backgrounds in technology and hospitality discovered no such service existed in this where-you-want-it, when-you-want it culture, they set out to change that. Ghiz and Schudel did it in 2016 with Supurb, their Tempe software company that harnesses the convenience utilized by services like Uber and Postmates to provide medical-marijuana delivery from dispensaries to patients. It’s the first online platform in Arizona to do this. It’s also compliant in other states where the treatment is legal.
How it works Patients fill out an online profile that includes a photo of their medical marijuana card and driver’s license. When Supurb verifies a patient is active and in good standing, he or she is can place an order from a computer or mobile device to any of the dispensaries in Supurb’s database. Typically, patients find one geographically close to them. “Everything now is on-demand, and that’s what people are looking for — a personalized experience. It was the perfect timing,” said Schudel, who shares managing-partner duties with Ghiz. Deliveries are made to wherever patients are within an hour. Schools, churches and government-owned facilities, however, are off-limits, Ghiz said. Drivers meet customers curbside. Patients have requested deliveries at a friend or relative’s home, a restaurant or even outside a movie theater. Many prefer not to receive their medical marijuana at home. “Patients are all about privacy. We feel this is the best way to get patients their medicine in the most convenient, fast and affordable time and manner,” Schudel said. Rates are based on purchase total and/ or distance. For example, deliveries

within five miles from a dispensary are free with a $30 minimum purchase. Eventually, Ghiz said, the goal is to eliminate the delivery fee. There are currently more than 4,900 customers who use Supurb, with a total of 10,000 users in the database composed of patients and anyone who has enquired about the services, Schudel said. Most are from medical-marijuana permissible states. Timing could be on their side. North American legal sales of marijuana are projected to top $20.2 billion by 2021, assuming a compound annual growth rate of 25 percent, according to Arcview Market Research. By the end of the year, Supurb will have 10 dispensaries on board spanning the Phoenix and Tucson metro areas as well as Sedona and Flagstaff. By spring 2018, the platform is slated to be live in Maryland, Oregon and Alaska, Schudel said. The company has experienced a 25 percent monthly growth rate since launching. Ghiz said the concept was met with an overwhelming reception by patients, with about half the dispensaries reaching out, wanting to get on board.
The dispensaries Dispensaries pay a monthly fee to
partner with Supurb, which also benefits from revenue sharing on every sale. Ghiz and Schudel vet each dispensary to get them up to speed on how to use the software and train employees. Not only do they make sure a dispensary fits their mission, values and vision, it gives the dispensary a chance to see whether it is equally comfortable with the concept. Dispensaries also have to take into consideration that they provide the delivery drivers. It takes about two weeks to get a new dispensary on board. Currently, there is a waitlist. “There’s a lot of attention to detail. We’re building something new, but we know we are creating a new division for their business (too),” Ghiz said. Dispensaries view Supurb as an opportunity to generate leads, increase their sales and get an edge over competitors in their area, Schudel explained. In a time when competition is growing, this is an advantage. “Dispensaries can use employees during downtime and maximize employee output. They’re giving patients an experience that competitors are not,” Schudel said. Level-Up dispensary in Scottsdale has been on board for a few weeks but has already seen an increase in new clientele who found it via Supurb, said Jen-
na Urusky, marketing director at LevelUp. “One of Supurb’s strengths is that people can find us organically and they are finding us now,” she said. Previously, Level-Up had an arrangement where customers could pick up their orders at a central location. But after using Suburb, they have eliminated that option. Urusky said the speed and ease of getting Level-Up up and running and Supurb’s hands-on training underscored it was the right choice. “People really like the convenience. We found that (using) it is easier than expected. We’ve really been pleased,” she said. When Ghiz and Schudel came up with the idea that would become Supurb, Ghiz was in the hospitality and nightlife industry and Schudel had just returned to the Valley from Los Angeles, where he ran an energy-efficiency company he started but was tired of the grind. The University of Arizona alumni were thinking about other business opportunities and they hit upon the medical-marijuana delivery concept. It didn’t take long for them to learn that no such model existed, not even in popular legalized marijuana states like Colorado and California, Ghiz said. “The cannabis industry is the next gold rush, and it was a virtual unknown. Many were thinking conventional retail, but not many were thinking outside the box. We realized we had the skills set to create something unique,” Ghiz recalled. It took them a year to develop a solid model they felt comfortable with to put in motion. They started with one dispensary to test the platform. Now, they look to take their concept to other states and are braced for competition. “We want to make sure to solidify Arizona to where competitors would have a difficult time coming here,” Ghiz said. “We hope to replicate this model in other states without compromising patient care and attention to detail.”

Tempe man sentenced to 12 years for killing Murderer’s mental state factors into prison term SEAN NA ARIZONA REPUBLIC
A Tempe man convicted of fatally stabbing his stepfather, Donovan Arneson, was sentenced Friday to 12 years in prison. Blake Johnaton HolBlake Holten ten, 28, was sentenced by Maricopa County Superior Court Judge Ronda Fisk. He pleaded guilty June 16 to second-degree murder. “I am truly sorry,” Holten told the court. Holten was indicted on a count of second-degree murder, three counts of aggravated assault and three counts of kidnapping in the March 4, 2016, attack. The other counts were dismissed as part of his plea agreement.
‘I wish I could have hugged him longer’ Arneson’s first cousin Mary Iwan delivered a statement on behalf of herself and other family members, asking the judge to give Holten a life sentence. “I never forget the date (when her cousin was murdered),” Iwan started her statement while fighting back tears. She later read statements from the victim’s father and sister, all of which recounted their loving memories of Arneson, who enjoyed driving an orange Jeep. “I used to cry every morning ... I wish I could have hugged him longer (on the night I saw him for the last time),” Iwan read from the sister’s statement. After Iwan, a series of statements from Holten’s family members followed, urging the judge to give Holten a lighter sentence. “My son’s a good man,” Lane Holten, Holten’s father, said to the judge. “He’s never been in trouble ... Blake didn’t mean it to happen and never intended to hurt anybody.” Brandy Holten followed her father and it would be her brother’s 29th birthday in two days. At that moment, about 15 of Holten’s family members
started weeping. Both the father and sister said Holten has had serious mental-health issues that made him lose control when fatally stabbing Arneson. Holten’s family wanted the judge to consider Holten’s mental impairment as a mitigating factor. The judge said Holten’s causing serious grief for the victim’s family meets an aggravating circumstance. However, she said she considered Holten’s mental impairment that day as a mitigating factor, ultimately giving Holten a lighter sentence: 12 years in prison.
Police arrived before the stabbing Holten’s father contacted Tempe police that night to conduct a welfare check at the residence at the Garden Grove Apartments, near Kyrene Road and Grove Parkway, at 6:30 p.m. after he heard a woman yell to call 911 while he was talking to Holten over the phone, authorities said. Holten reportedly held his mother, stepfather and fiancee against their wills at knifepoint for about an hour before police arrived, authorities said. The responding officers forced their way into the apartment after they heard cries and pleas for help by people inside, police said. Once inside, police officers said, they saw Holten stab his mother and stepfather, identified as 46-year-old Arneson. Court records said Holten fled to a bedroom where he jumped out of a second-story window. He was caught a short distance from the apartment carrying a bloodstained, fixed-blade knife. Both Holten’s mother and Arneson were taken to a nearby hospital where they were treated for multiple stab wounds. Arneson later died of his injuries. Holten’s mother and fiancee identified Holten as the attacker to police and told investigators he took their cellphones from them so they could not call for help. Holten later admitted to holding his family members hostage and said he stabbed Arneson three times. Holten later told police that he didn’t know if he stabbed his mother but said that she was possibly injured while attempting to protect Arneson.

Record: Man claims abuse in Mesa killing BRIEANNA J FRANK THE REPUBLIC | AZCENTRAL.COM
A man who told police he fatally shot his girlfriend after an earlymorning argument on Thursday in Mesa faces a second-degree murder charge, police said. Teddy Police, in a probableVanders cause document filed in court, said Teddy Vanders, 52, called police just before 4 a.m. Thursday to report he had fatally shot his girlfriend at their Mesa residence in the 7000 block of East Monte Avenue. The court document did not identify the victim. Vanders told police he and his girlfriend lived together for 10 years and had argued before the shooting, the court document said. He told police he shot the woman to end her abusiveness, the court record said. Officers reported the victim had a gunshot wound in the front of her head and that a handgun with one spent cartridge in the cylinder was found near the location of the shooting, the court record said. Responding officers said they smelled alcohol on the man’s breath and that there were indications the victim could have also been drinking before the shooting, the court record
said. Vanders later told police both of them had been drinking before the shooting, the court record said. Investigators found several other guns in the home but said they were all unloaded. The court record said Vanders told an officer while en route to the police station that the victim had been abusive toward him and was “acting crazy the night prior.” Vanders also told the officer to “interview the victim’s family and friends so that we would discover his actions were understandable,” the court record said. Vanders told police he understood he would do prison time for shooting his girlfriend but “hoped the judge understood him” and that jail time would be “worth it because the victim would not be abusing him any longer,” the court record said. The court record said a review of the 911 call showed that when he was asked by dispatchers if the victim was still breathing, Vanders appeared to chuckle and said, “She is gone.” The court record also said Vanders had a previous history of domestic violence. Vanders’ bond was set at $750,000 and his preliminary hearing is scheduled for July 24.

Tortoises might not be the animals that first come to mind when discussing runaways, but one in Gilbert is trying to crawl to the top of the list. Police rescued a runaway tortoise in a Gilbert neighborhood Thursday morning. The little buddy weighs in at about 40 pounds, according to Sgt. Darrell Krueger, and has a yellow-tinted shell. Someone reported the runaway at 7:40 a.m., so officers headed to a neighborhood near Cooper and Guadalupe roads. They found the tortoise taking a stroll near Velero Street and Cayman Square Drive. Police were unable to find an agency to take care of the animal, so a Gilbert officer is fostering it until they find its owner, Krueger said. Entertaining Jorge working on smooth dance moves CLINT WILLIAMS AID TO ADOPTION OF SPECIAL KIDS
King of Pop Michael Jackson lives on in the practiced dance moves of 10-yearold Jorge. Jackson, who died just before Jorge turned 3, remains an idol for Jorge. “I wish I was the second Michael Jackson,” he says. And it’s not idle talk. Jorge loves to dance and spends hours practicing the signature moves of Jackson — including the moonwalk. He was a rapt student during a private dance lesson with instructor Alicia Norzagaray at Arizona Dance Studio in Chandler. Jorge also likes to perform rap songs. “I’ve been writing rap lyrics since I was 9, and I wrote because I’ve always wanted to be a rapper,” he says. “Sometimes I write about my family and sports at school and my friends. “I like to make people laugh so I can make new friends.” The dancing, rapping and joking make Jorge an entertaining kid, says James Patton, a youth advocate with Christian Family Care. “He loves to make people laugh and he likes to be the center of attention,” Patton says.
Because he likes to be the center of attention, Jorge would thrive as an only child in a two-parent household with a stay-at-home parent, Patton says. Jorge “responds well to incentives and positive reinforcement,” Patton adds. Jorge will be going into the sixth grade and loves going to class. “I like school because I love math, I love reading, I love science,” Jorge says. “If I didn’t love school, I wouldn’t get a degree or I wouldn’t go to college for learning.” Jorge says his goal is to attend Arizona State University and that being part of a forever family would help him with that: “I would like a forever family that cares about me and loves me and helps me achieve my goals.” Watch the stories of children in foster care waiting on forever families each week on the Wednesday’s Child segment each week between 5-6 a.m. on Channel 12 (KPNX). Wurst Festival Ever at Short Leash returns for all your hot dog needs Wurst Festival Ever
LAURA LATZKO SPECIAL FOR THE REPUBLIC | AZCENTRAL.COM
A hot dog may be the simplest of foods, but don’t let it fool you: it can be so much more. The second annual Wurst Festival Ever at Short Leash Hot Dogs on July 22 will highlight the different combinations that can be “mustarded up” when dressing up hot dogs. The Roosevelt Row festival features different varieties and combinations of sausages and a pun competition designed to make viewers “laugh their buns off” during the hottest time of the year. Short Leash co-owner Brad Moore said the event ties into his restaurant’s overall mission of making the hot dog into an artisan food. “Part of our business philosophy is to elevate the hot dog and make people think of something besides your little ballpark frank with ketchup, mustard and onions,” Moore said. This year, the festival has expanded to feature 10 to 12 local food trucks and restaurants, many of which don’t normally serve hot dogs. Moore said the event allows local eateries to reach new customers and get creative with hot dogs. “These guys get to play with a new food that they’re not traditionally accustomed to serving and see what they can come up with,” Moore said. Each food truck and restaurant will serve $3 sample sizes, allowing custom-

ers to try different versions and vote on their favorites. To complement the hot dogs, the festival will have beer options from Grand Canyon Brewing, an Arizona brewery operated out of Williams. For the second year, the festival takes place close to National Hot Dog Day. Moore and his wife, Kat, opened their first location on Roosevelt Street four
years ago during the national holiday. Before that, they operated out of a food truck for three and a half years. He previously worked in the banking industry, and she as an interior designer. During the festival, Short Leash’s Roosevelt location will offer its full menu of sausages and doughnuts inside the restaurant. The restaurant sells specialty items

such as a bratwurst with poutine; cheesestuffed wieners on corn tortillas; beef hot dogs filled with mac and cheese; hot dogs with peanut butter, gouda, bacon, Cracker Jack popcorn and BBQ sauce; and a chicken dog with grilled pear, arugula, prosciutto, goat cheese and honey. The festival isn’t just for food truck owners and restaurateurs. Local hot dog connoisseurs and chefs had the opportunity to join in on the fun and experiment with hot dog toppings as part of a customer competition. The winning hot dog is sold at the festival and featured on Short Leash’s menu for a month. Last year, the winning entry was a bratwurst on a pretzel bun with cheese curds and popcorn. Moore said the contest lets hot dog lovers show off their inventiveness. “We had a couple customers that were sitting at the bar on First Friday, and they See WURST , Page 12

were pontificating over what would go good together,” Moore said. “It was fun to watch them banter back and forth over what might be missing. ‘Ah, I got the sweet. I need some spice. I need some crunch.’ ” Local comedians will also have a chance to take part in the festival as part of a pun competition with qualified and day-of contestants. During the contest, participants are tasked with coming up with puns for different categories. Throughout the day, comedians from the Valley Bar’s “Literally the Worst Show Ever” will emcee. Local comedians such as Michael Turner, Shapel Lacey, Charles Engle, Daniel Thomson and Anwar Newton will do standup, perform musical numbers, interact with the crowd and throw in hotdog themed humor and puns along the way. The show also features Those Guys Over There, a house band made up of four local musicians.

Dust-storm detector to be installed on I-10 TYLER FINGERT CRONKITE NEWS
State safety and transportation officials are developing a detection system to warn motorists if dangerous dust storms are in the area. The Southwest is known for its haboobs during the monsoon season. A recent dust storm in New Mexico, near the Arizona border, caused a 25-car pileup, killing six people. The dust-detection system, which is scheduled to be installed along a portion of Interstate 10 between Phoenix and Tucson by 2019, will give the Arizona Department of Transportation and the Department of Public Safety an early warning of storms. Installation is expected to begin by the end of 2017 “Dust storms happen quickly, without very much warning,” said DPS spokesman Kameron Lee. “Sometimes we can anticipate them, but a lot of the times we can’t.”
The program is being coordinated with the National Weather Service. “We can get information to drivers so that they can make the right decisions and be safe on the roadway,” said Tom Herrmann, an ADOT spokesman. Cameras and sensors are combined to monitor the road and the desert on either side of it. The overhead signs that span freeways will automatically alert motorists of potential dangers ahead and lower the speed limit. At the same time, workers in the ADOT operations center are monitoring what’s happening on state roads on a wall of screens. “They can then look at our cameras in that area, see what the situation is and if they need to make adjustments, they can do that,” Hermann said. The system will be installed over the next two years on a 10-mile stretch of I-10 between Eloy and Picacho Peak. If it works well, it could be expanded to other problem areas.

A Phoenix LGBT youth center is requesting the public’s help for donations to help it replenish supplies lost in a July 12 fire that forced indefinite closure of the facility. A fire that crews believe was caused by spontaneous combustion broke out at the one.n.ten youth center at Third Street and Weldon Avenue last Wednesday. Crews did not believe the fire was intentionally set and said it was likely sparked by a “combination of improperly stored rags and batteries mixed with a hot, ventilated room,” according to Phoenix Fire Capt. Rob McDade. No one was injured in the fire. The center’s scheduled programs resumed Thursday at the Parsons Center for Health and Wellness, in the same complex as the youth facility. The center provides resources and programs for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender youths. “Support services will not skip a beat, and we will do our best to recreate ‘home’ for our youth as quickly as possible,” the organization wrote in a Facebook post. The Facebook post said the founda-
tion lost many items in the fire, including supplies and electronic equipment, food, hygiene and personal products, and camping equipment. Electronics lost include two large flat-screen TVs, Windows 10 and Mac laptops, an HDMI-compatible projector, gaming consoles including a PS4, Xbox 1 and Wii, and an electric piano, among other items. Miscellaneous items lost included backpacks, bus passes, clothing store gift cards, and personal items such as shampoo, razors, deodorant, and unused socks and underwear. The center said it also lost equipment used on camping trips, including new sleeping bags and pads, refillable water bottles and pillows. The center also said youths served at the center “love pizza and home-cooked meals,” and said anyone interested in providing dinner as they plan for the delivery of nightly meals should email travis@onenten.org. Youths needing shower facilities are able to go to the Tumbleweed Center while the one.n.ten foundation focuses on finding a new home. Financial contributions can be made at www.onenten.org/waystogive.

How one Phoenix mom BOOST conquers summer heat YOUR CURB APPEAL AND INCREASE YOUR HOME VALUE
JENNIFER MCCLELLAN THE REPUBLIC | AZCENTRAL.COM
I grew up in the Phoenix desert. More accurately, I grew up in an oven. While kids in other parts of the country relished summer as the time to ride bikes, play ball and generally be outside in comfort, my friends and I were kept inside while the sun was out. Like little suburban vampires, we only went outside after the sun went down. You know, when it was a cool 100 degrees instead of 112. I’ve been waging war against the heat since I was young. I thought I was used to it. Then my daughter arrived and I became acutely aware of just how damn hot it is here. I made it a mission to find things to help conquer the summer scorch. Here’s what I’ve armed our family with, so far. These five things have helped us shield her from buckle burns, flushed cheeks and a sweaty back. And, hey, if they work in Phoenix, just think what they can do for you.
Noggle It’s the silliest name, but the Noggle is one of my all-time favorite baby accessories. It’s a must-have for parents with cars that don’t have backseat air-conditioning vents. Invented by two dads in Phoenix who wanted to get cool air to their infants as soon as possible in the car, the Noggle transfers the cold air from the front of the car directly to your baby in the backseat. The tube is ridiculously simple to set up and can be easily removed. To install, you hook one end of the Noggle to the AC in your dash. The other end gets tied in the back, usually to the backseat headrest (all the necessary equipment is included). It’s a bit bulky, but you get used to that. And it’s worth it to avoid an overheated baby. A 6-foot Noggle is $39.99.
Cart seat cooler This is essentially an ice pack for a car seat. I use the Cooltech Car Seat Cooler ($39.99). It keeps the car seat cloth cool, but more importantly, it stops metal buckles from searing baby’s skin. You keep it folded up in the freezer and when you go out, you unfold it and put it in the car seat. Remove it when baby is ready to get back in (the seat won’t be wet be-

cause the cooler doesn’t have condensation as it melts). It fits snugly in both rear- and forward-facing car seats.

Car seat sun shade On its own, the sun shade doesn’t cool. But it does prevent metal from becoming a torture device by deflecting the sun. Combine it with the car seat cooler and it becomes an insulation device that keeps things super chilly. I keep this in my car always, and on the occasions I’ve forgotten the car seat cooler, it has saved the day. Definitely better than nothing. And you’ve got to love the $7.99 price tag.

Water play table At our house, this is the compromise between playing outside and staying cool. We have the Little Tikes Spiralin’ Seas Waterpark Play Table ($33.74 on Amazon), which has a bunch of activities like a Ferris wheel and a spiral tower. She’s soaked and engaged and we’re happy she’s not cooped up or frying in the heat. We keep the play table under the shaded patio so our daughter is out of the direct sun. You can also put it under an umbrella.

ONLY 16 DAYS LEFT! KIMBERLY YELLOW ROBE SOCIAL SECURITY
Grow your benefits beyond retirement age For more and more Americans, reaching retirement age no longer means the end of an active working life. Many people are choosing to work past the age of 65, according to the Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics. If you’re willing and able, maintaining gainful employment later in life could go a long way toward ensuring a secure future for you and your family. Besides providing you with additional income to pay your bills, extending your employment or working for yourself could boost your lifetime Social Security benefits. Here’s how: Waiting to claim your Social Security retirement benefits could grow them by up to 32 percent. Through delayed retirement credits, your monthly benefit amount increases by about 8 percent for each year you wait between your full retirement age and 70. LOUIS SILVERMAN ESTATE PLANNING
Keep your retirement planning up to date We spend a great deal of time reviewing existing trusts. In addition to determining if the trust is up to date, we perform a “funding” review to verify if assets are properly titled. It is not uncommon to find that most of the prospective client’s assets are actually held in IRAs, 401(k)s or similar retirement plans, and not titled in the trust. Despite this, many people believe that by updating their trust, and identifying and properly planning for their beneficiaries, they are also updating their IRA beneficiaries. This is not the case at all. Retirement plans, or tax-deferred, taxable plans, must remain in the name of the account holder. They are paid on death by beneficiary designation. In the case of married couples, in most cases the primary beneficiary will be the spouse. The contingent beneficiary will generally be children. Although this may appear to be the appropriate and best plan, it does not always
work. Here are a couple of examples. The first is minor children. It is never appropriate to leave assets to a minor. They do not have legal capacity and, if they do inherit property, including a retirement plan, their share will be placed in a conservatorship and given to them at 18. In trust planning, we spend quite a bit of time protecting the inheritances of children, postponing delivery and appointing third-party trustees, but none of these protections applies if the minor is named beneficiary. The second example is an incapacitated beneficiary. This applies to a specialneeds beneficiary (someone whose incapacity is so severe he or she is eligible for government assistance), or simply an adult who is incapable of managing his or her affairs because of immaturity, poor spending habits or drug addiction, among other factors. We often find extensive provisions to protect these individuals in trusts, but when these people are named retirement-plan beneficiaries, the trust protections do not apply. So, exercise a great deal of caution in making sure your retirement-plan beneficiaries are up to date, consistent with your intentions, and that you have protected your plan’s beneficiaries as you have in your trust. It is always a good idea to get professional advice to make sure that your plan works. Louis A. Silverman is a Tempe-based attorney focusing on all aspects of estate planning. If they do inherit property, including a retirement plan, their share will be placed in a conservatorship and given to them at 18.

Arizona K12 Center helps teachers grow Programs bolster classroom performance Special for The Republic
According to Beth Maloney, a veteran fifth-grade teacher in Surprise, she wouldn’t be the teacher she is today if it weren’t for the Arizona K12 Center in Phoenix, which provides ongoing affordable professional development programs to teachers throughout the state of Arizona. Maloney first got involved with the Arizona K12 Center over a decade ago, when she participated in a professional development session. She says she was immediately struck by how she and other participating teachers were treated as real working professionals. “Teachers really need to be lifelong learners,” said Maloney. “It is so important for us to model that mindset for our students, so they see the importance of continuing to learn and grow.” In a profession where teachers often feel undervalued and underpaid, Maloney says she can’t emphasize enough what the Arizona K12 Center has done for teachers

and students in Arizona. The Arizona K12 Center facilitates and supports a range of programs that affect classroom performance, empower teacher leaders and enhance learning communities. One of the programs is National Board Certification, a voluntary, rigorous national certification program. “National board certification doesn’t just make you a better teacher for a year or several years during the process,” said
Maloney. “It sticks with you. It changes your mindset, the way you reflect on your teaching process, and the way you interact with students, families and the community.” Kathy Wiebke, executive director of the Arizona K12 Center says her organization is committed to lifting teachers up. “Cognitively and emotionally, we want to fill their buckets,” said Wiebke. Wiebke said funding from sources like
APS, which provides which an annual grant of $20,000, is critical. “Money is always the thing that keep us from doing what we need to do,” said Wiebke. “When we have generous donors like APS, we are able to stretch our dollars even more and put it back into the program.” APS supports two areas at the K12 Center, the Beginning Teacher Institute and the National Board Certified Teacher and Teacher Leadership Board. “They help us support teachers along that continuum of practice,” Wiebke said, “from the newest to the most skilled and accomplished teachers.” This year, APS also surprised each honoree at the New Master Teachers and Board Certified Teachers recognition event with a check for $200. “It was amazing,” Maloney said. “So unexpected. (A friend) knew exactly how she was going to spend the money — on a new set of books. Everything a teacher gets goes right back into the classroom. The bonus money was a real treat. That never happens.” Details: Arizona K12 Center, 99 E Virginia Ave, Phoenix. 602-443-6444, www.azk12.org.
