rom minimal emergency wait times and a unique process for seamless inpatient care, to a separate corrections area for local correctional patients, Florence Hospital at Anthem (FHA), licensed as a General Acute Care Hospital, brings full-service health care to Florence, Ariz. It also brings a deeper sense

of community through hands-on local involvement and white glove treatment for patients and families.

Unique services The hospital’s trademark is “door to doc in 31 minutes™” and its average Emergency Room (ER) waiting time is expected to be eight minutes, based on sister property Gilbert Hos-

pital’s statistics. The facility also employs a unique process for inpatient care.

“We’re known for our seamless continuity between levels of inpatient care,” said Amy Jascourt, FHA director of Consumer Affairs and Marketing.

“For example, patients who are upgraded to intensive care never have to transfer to an entirely different unit, we simply move them into an ICU bed. This is healthier and easier for both patients

This team spirit also extends into the community. Before the facility even opened, the hospital became involved in the community on a grassroots level. The staff and leadership participate in numerous events impacting the community: golf tournament fundraisers, a local kids’ shopping program and health fairs offering free flu shots, health screenings and blood pressure checks.

Timing is everything

Door to Doc in 31 minutes: Patients are the top priority

T

his is a different approach to a hospital’s emergency services.

“We do not put people into waiting rooms.”

“We do not rush people through.”

“We do not ask for insurance information up front, only for a name and birth date.”

“We do not triage (emergency) patients unless we are completely full, and then we insist that a physician and nurse do that together.”

Tim Johns, M.D., emergency physician, medical director and a founder of Gilbert Hospital, could probably list a few more factors contributing to emergency services at Gilbert and the new Florence Hospital at Anthem, but he’s happier to let the numbers back him up.

For instance: 31 minutes.

That’s the maximum time emergency patients will wait to see a physician.

Patients who need an intravenous antibiotic will have it started within 15 minutes.

Those requiring a chest

X-ray will have it completed (and most likely reviewed, too) within 20 minutes. Initial laboratory blood work will be done within 30 minutes.

At least 94 percent of the patients seen in these hospitals’ emergency departments will receive all the care they need at that hospital.

“When we opened six years ago, Arizona had the worst wait times (in emergency rooms) in the country,” Johns said.

“We realized that when clinicians run the hospital,

31 minutes. That’s the maximum time emergency patients will wait to see a physician. things run differently. We believe doctors and nurses are the driving piece in delivering (the best) patient care, and we really do listen to the professionals at the bedside. We work in a different way.”

Florence Hospital at Anthem They bring a level of experience and passion for providing the best possible care

The staff at Florence Hospital at Anthem is made up of dedicated, caring professionals who truly enjoy the work that they are doing. Here is a brief introduction of some of them

Dr. Anne Borik,

Dr. Cruz Franco,

Dr. S. Zubair Tahir,

Dr. Borik, an internal medicine physician at Gilbert Hospital and Florence Hospital at Anthem, moved to Arizona from Pennsylvania in 1995. In 1997, she launched a hospitalist practice; meaning that rather than having an outpatient practice, she works at the two hospitals, making patient rounds twice a day.

“This allowed me to meet the staff, and really get to know everyone who works here, so it was very beneficial to everyone.

The insurance companies are also very much in favor of the hospitalist model.”

Every Wednesday at 1 p.m., Borik can be heard on KQCK Live hosting her popular “DocTalk with Dr. Anne Borik” radio show.

Dr. Franco is in his twenty-eighth year in medicine. After completing his residency at the University of Illinois he practiced at several valley hospitals included John C. Lincoln Trauma Center.

Currently the Chief of Staff at Gilbert Hospital, Franco is pleased to be part of a hospital that will provide a valuable and muchneeded service to the residents of Florence and the surrounding areas.

“It’s so nice to be part of a new hospital that is conveniently located right in the community, where patients don’t have to travel very far to get to it,” he said. “I’m really excited to have this opportunity.”

Dr. Tahir has worked in the field of medicine for over 30 years.

Before moving to Arizona, he practiced in both Pennsylvania and Arkansas.

In his role of Chief of Surgery, Tahir said he is pleased to be helping to build Florence Hospital at Anthem the same way he helped build Gilbert Hospital— by giving patients access to outstanding health care.

“I’m happy to be bringing quality and immediate healthcare to the local community,” he said.

Carolyn Masood,

Vice President of Nursing and Regulatory Affairs: Carolyn Masood, who has been with Gilbert Hospital since 2005, is now responsible for the nursing oversight of both Gilbert and now Florence Hospital at Anthem. She oversees policy and processes, helping to develop nursing departments and the growth of the Continuous Quality Performance I mprovement programs that addresses the quality of patient care.

She also ensures both hospital are in clinical compliance with federal and state regulations.

Masood, who has been a Registered Nurse for 23 years, said she is happy to be part of a community healthcare facility that will have an immediate and positive impact on the people it serves.

“I tell my children every day to make a difference in at least one person’s life today, and that’s honestly why I became a nurse myself.

I wanted to make a difference by touching the lives of those in need and have a profession that I valued.

I’m very excited about the new hospital and feel privileged to work for this organization.”

Tish Little,

Emergency Department Manager and Chief Nursing Officer: Tish Little, who worked in emergency medicine for over 30 years in Canada as well as overseas, was newly retired and had just moved to Arizona when she stumbled upon “an amazing new hospital down the road.”

She went inside to meet the staff at Florence Hospital at Anthem, tell them about her long career in emergency management, and ask about the hospital and emergency room setting. Little said she was so impressed with what she heard that she immediately came out of her short retirement.

“All of the things that I didn’t like about emergency rooms, like long waiting times and not enough beds, all seem to be a non-issue here. The whole philosophy is so refreshing and unbelievable that I just couldn’t resist — I just have to be a part of it.”

Kimberly Fawley,

In-Patient and ICU Manager: Kimberly Fawley has been in the medical profession for 16 years. Originally started Nursing Career in Indiana and moved to Arizona in 2010 to expand in her Nursing Career. One of the best parts about working at Florence Hospital at Anthem, she said, is knowing that families from the local area will not have to spend a lot of time traveling to be with their loved ones.

“I am looking forward to the fact that we will be able to keep our patients who require a higher level of care right in their community,” she said. “I’m also glad that this will be one of the first hospitals to have a Multi Organized Service Unit — also known as MOSU. This will allow us the opportunity to work with many levels of nursing care.”

Brenda Ortiz,

Corrections Manager of In-patient/ER/ICU: Brenda Ortiz, she has 15 years of experience in Correctional Medicine and 12 years in Acute Care.

She started with Florence Hospital at Anthem December 2011.

“I will be working with the security agencies in assuring that the inmates, staff, and public are kept safe while at FHA. I also oversee that the staff adhere to policies, procedures, and state/federal regulations at the hospital; ensuring that the patients receive the best medical care possible.”

Ortiz originally started her career in nursing in 1988. She said the people that she works with — both her co-workers and the patients — are what keeps her happily coming back to work every day.

“I enjoy them, and I enjoy helping our patients and making sure they are getting the best medical care possible.”

Zenji Reynolds, director of Radiology at Florence Hospital at Anthem, is no stranger to the health field, having been in medicine since 1994.

His years of experience haven’t quieted his passion for helping others.

“I am looking forward to providing service to a new and growing community,” Reynolds said. “I am looking forward to growing with this company and being an integral part of a friendly and wonderful healthcare service.”

Reynolds is also a proud veteran of the United States Air Force.

Sandra Peek has been in nursing since 2006. Areas of experience range from Med/Surg, Telemetry, ICU, Cardiac Cath Lab and Surgery. Started with Gilbert Hospital in 2008 and recently transferring facilities to participate in the development and success of Florence Hospital at Anthem.

For more than 23 years, Scott Bonhus has worked in pharmacy field. While there have been many changes over the years, one thing has remained constant: quality care. Bonhus takes great pride in that!

The opportunity to work in a brand new hospital, serving the Florence community, is exciting for him. “Who doesn’t want to be involved in opening and working in a brand new facility?” Bonhus said. “This is a first for me!”

While Bonhus has many interests outside of the pharmacy field, such as travel, hiking, technology, cars and Mexican culture, it’s the opportunity to make a difference that drives him most.

“I enjoy working and collaborating with the other members of the health-care team to help make sure patients get good, safe medication therapy.”

enji Reynolds, R.T., B.S., director of radiology at Florence Hospital at Anthem, formerly the manager at its sister hospital in Gilbert, can reel off a long list of very new, very highly advanced equipment that’s in place and in use at both hospitals.

From the «simplest» X-rays to the 64-slice CT scanner to the MRI exams completed in less than 20 minutes, “We have the latest and greatest, from hardware to software to training that’s ahead of the curve,” he said.

Scans are faster and safer, too, since the hospitals’ software helps maintain the lowest radiation needed.

“The speed in our scans is

unbelievable — they’re done in minutes and seconds, with results returned in 30 minutes or less,” he said. “More than that, our labs are totally up-to-theminute, our operating rooms have the latest in surgical technologies — if anything was on the equipment wish list, it’s here.”

Speed in testing helps assure more rapid patient care and also means that patients have only the tests needed for diagnosis and treatment. “When results are returned so quickly, you know you’ll either reach a diagnosis — or require another test, so you can escalate as needed,” Reynolds said.

Dr. Anne Borik hits the airwaves weekly to share health advice with listeners

very Wednesday at 1 p.m., Dr. Anne Borik, an internal medicine physician at Florence Hospital at Anthem, hosts an hourlong radio show on KQCK Live called “DocTalk with Dr. Anne Borik.”

The program, which can also be watched through the station’s website, went on the air in early January.

When asked if she would be interested in hosting the show, Borik said she was delighted.

“For over a year I had wanted to do something like this,” she said. “I believe strongly in community service and reaching out to others, and I wanted to do something that would help align the community with the new hospital in Florence.”

health, wellness, or how to maintain well-being.

Community first

At Gilbert Hospital, and the new Florence Hospital at Anthem, giving back is key

A

s a way of giving back to the many patients they serve, the staff at the new Florence Hospital at Anthem and Gilbert Hospital believe strongly in local community involvement.

Employees from both hospitals regularly participate in a wide variety of community events. For example, Gilbert Hospital is involved every year with donating bicycles for the Bikes for Kids event held through the Higley Unified School District. Gilbert Hospital staff donated approximately 200 first aid bags to the town of Gilbert’s youth soccer programs.

“Gilbert Hospital offers free flu shot clinics, has offered free

Florence Hospital at Anthem will also participate in TOPS, Jascourt said, in addition to sponsoring and donating to many other local events and organizations such as free flu shots, the Coolidge Bears Youth Football and Cheer, the Florence Unified School District, and the March of Dimes March for Babies Walk.

Madvig said participating in and supporting local events and organizations helps to build rapport with the community that the hospitals are serving.

“It helps to personalize a patient’s care,” she said.

Paperless charting enhances level of care

y midsummer of this year, both Gilbert Hospital and Florence Hospital at Anthem will be live on a paperless charting system for their patients.

Caterina Scianna, Director of Health Information Management at Gilbert Hospital, said the targeted “go live” date for their new electronic medical record is July 1, when they will transition to what she calls a “paper light” status, with both hospitals still using a small amount of paper.

By October, both hospitals should be completely converted over and working
