because a self-driving car of the future may not require headlights or tail lights. Goduto said. Hybrids, all-electrics a big part of the future “I think almost every automaker has some electric vehicle program,” Elon Musk, founder of Tesla, which manufactures allelectric vehicles, said in an interview at the 2017 TED conference in Vancouver last April. “They vary in seriousness. Some are very serious about transitioning entirely to electric, and some are just dabbling in it.” Mercedes-Benz already offers three hybrid vehicles, but the company is expected to offer its EQ full-electric vehicle next year, said Gus Gonzales of MercedesBenz of Scottsdale. The 2019 Mercedes EQ Electric Crossover is one of 10 electric cars that Mercedes-Benz plans to release under its EQ sub-brand by 2022. The Lexus LF-1 concept vehicle could be powered “by fuel cell, hybrid, plugin hybrid, gasoline, or even all-electric,” according to a press release from Lexus, and could be offered as soon as five years from now. Other Lexus models will continue to become available with hybrid or all-electric options between now and Mercedes-Benz

2025. The design of the LF-1 “fuses the organic shapes of liquid metal with the sharp edges of a traditional Japanese sword,” according to the press release. Porsche is expected to begin production of its all-electric Mission E sedan concept in 2019 or 2020. All of Porsche’s U.S. dealerships will be equipped with 800-volt fast-charging stations. Porsche’s iconic 911 models may not have an all-electric option in the future, however, said Richard Cvijanovich, owner of Porsche Chandler, because of “a smaller structure and vehicle geometry.” The future of autonomous driving The Mercedes F015 concept car, with its autonomous driving option and futuristic features, including six installed displays mounted in the instrument panel and on the rear and side walls, creates “a digital living space,” and is expected to be available by 2030. Elon Musk believes consumers will be able to overcome reservations about buying self-driving cars once the safety record of self-driving cars is established. “No system is going to be perfect,” he said in the interview at TED last April, “but if you say…the car is unlikely to crash in a hundred lifetimes, or a thousand lifetimes, then people are like, okay, wow, if I were to live a thousand lives, I would still most likely never experience a crash, then that’s probably okay.” “The complexity of bringing (a self-driving car) from demonstration to deployment—from the Consumer Electronics Show parking lot to your driveway—is a factor of about 10,000,” Goduto said.

Gracious Living in a Lush Classic Neighborhood The Manors at Butler North is a rare gem in the iconic North Phoenix Corridor By Joan Westlake

A

major attraction for the owners now moving into their homes in The Manors at Butler North is the rare possibility of moving into a newly constructed house, in a fully gated community, in this long-established neighborhood north of Northern, between Central and Seventh avenues. Rich Zacher, Principal/Builder, Empire Residential Communities, said his company’s reputation of quality and integrity was a major factor in acquiring the opportunity to create this unique home enclave. As a group of affiliated companies spanning over 30 years, the Empire Group is recognized as one of the leading residential and commercial real estate developers in the Phoenix metropolitan market. “The family who lived on this beautiful acreage for 40 years had seen a project I had done in the past,” said Zacher. “They saw we did such a quality job and said they

felt we were the developer that would build a community worthy of the neighborhood. We designed a community with a dramatic entry gate opening to a large, private park in the middle so the street is bisected by this open space, adding to am elegant, spacious feeling.” The Manors at Butler North is a limited collection of 10 single-family, semicustom homes between 2,300 to 4,800 square feet. To blend with the lush, classic neighborhood, the homes are in an English cottage style with steep pitched roofs and architectural details such as brick trim and façade, decorative shutters and recessed garages. Seven flexible, single- and twostory plans offer design details such as charming turret entries, balconies, lofts, front porches and covered patios. Rooms that open to the pool-sized yards create spaces ideal for entertainment. Inside, homes in this North Phoenix sanctuary include notable features such as high ceiling, hard-surface flooring, a complete

complement of appliances and solidsurface counter tops. With home prices starting at $789,000, this exclusive North Phoenix community is conveniently located with easy access to downtown Phoenix, freeways, walking paths and the legendary Phoenix Mountain

Preserve. Generations of Phoenicians have enjoyed Royal Palms Park, which is just a few blocks west. This popular park offers expansive grassy areas, sand lots, tall trees, play structures and plenty of open space for dog walking, yoga, soccer, baseball, Frisbee or relaxing.

INNOVATION

SCOTTSDALE DESERT MOUNTAIN HOMEOWNERS FROM CANADA TAKE HARD LOOK AT VALLEY WATER BY BRIAN SODOMA PHOTOS RICK D’ELIA

E

ight years ago, Dave and Susan Robertson, Canadian retirees, chose Arizona for their new winter-time home. They settled into the luxury community of Desert Mountain in Scottsdale where they would spend their winters while heading back home to Calgary for the summer each year. But one part of Arizona living did not sit well with them: Arizona’s hard water. When measuring a water’s mineral (calcium and magnesium) content, seven grains per gallon (gpg) is considered hard. Unfortunately, in Arizona, those numbers climb well into the double digits, even above 20 in some areas of metro Phoenix. The result? Scaly skin, faucets with calcium build up on them, spots on dinner glasses and a host of other water-related inconveniences. Some even argue that hard water can contribute to kidney stones and other health problems.

A solution The Robertsons opted for a twin-tank hybrid unit, with an added chlorine filtration system, from Kinetico. With it, their entire home enjoys soft water. Now, the couple can rely on spotless dishes and glasses, washing clothes with less than half the amount of detergent needed in the past and shower soap that actually lathers beautifully in the hand. The calcium and magnesium build-up in hard water actually prevents soap from lathering. “It’s nice not having to put bags of salt in all the time,” Dave Robertson

also said of the salt-less Kinetico system, which is non-electric and runs on water pressure alone. Robertson recently purchased a newer home in Desert Mountain. Moving down the road from the first home he bought there nearly a decade ago, he immediately purchased another whole-house system in his new house. Mineral build-up inside plumbing pipes can also be a problem in homes with hard water, and appliances like dishwashers, clothes washers and water heaters can cut a third to a half of their lifespan by cycling hard water for years. “You really get one of these systems to protect your home,” added Mike Mattox, general manager for Kinetico in Arizona.

For Robertson, however, higher levels of chlorine, especially during the summer months, used by municipalities to combat bacteria, were also a concern. According to reports from the U.S. Council of Environmental Quality, the cancer risk for people who drink chlorinated water is 93 percent greater than it is for those who drink water without chlorine. “I really wanted to get rid of that chlorine,” Robertson added. “I understand why they have to use it, but once that water gets to my home, I don’t want it in there.”

Dr. Dave Robertson and his wife Susan, love their Kinetico water system for soft water, as well as for drinking water. The retired Scottsdale couple live in Desert Mountain. This is the third home in which they had the system installed after purchase.

“It’s nice not having to put bags of salt in all the time.” – Dave Robertson

A closer look at minerals, chlorine Those who move from areas of the country with softer water don’t often understand why water is so hard in Arizona. Some may ask: aren’t calcium and magnesium healthy? In hard water, these forms of calcium and magnesium contain a greater number of ions than normal digestible versions of these minerals. As a result, the hard-water versions of calcium and magnesium don’t interact well with surfaces and humans.

EXTRAORDINARY TRAVEL

READY, SET, EXPLORE What will 2018 bring for luxury travelers? Maybe the better question is what won’t it bring. Finland

BY SUSIE STECKNER

A

n exclusive stay at an igloo in Finland. An adventure-filled getaway with extended family to Costa Rica. A deliciously long international vacation stretching over several weeks. An intimate stay with a local host to learn a new language. That’s the forecast from Virtuoso’s 2018 Luxe Report, an annual look at luxury travel preferences and emerging trends. Here’s what is ahead, according to a survey of Virtuoso travel advisors worldwide. Dream big. Possibilities really are endless. Well-healed and adventurous

travelers are asking for everything from reaching the edge of space in a MiG29 flight in Russia to herding cattle in Australia to celebrating a milestone in a private capsule aboard the London’s giant ferris wheel on the banks of the River Thames. Colder climes. Iceland continues to be a hot spot for travelers. Adventurers are focused on Antarctica and the Arctic. For cruisers, Alaska is still must-do vacation. Meanwhile, a trip to see the Northern Lights ranks as a “trip of a lifetime” among some Virtuoso advisors.

London

Explore Africa. One of the world’s most diverse continents, Africa offers something for everyone. Travelers are eager to visit culturally rich South Africa, the wilds of Botswana and Kenya, and the souks of Morocco. No trip is complete without a safari, an experience that particularly appeals to “sustainably savvy” travelers interested in wildlife preservation, according to Virtuoso. Find your fit. For millenials, the most sought-after destinations include Thailand, Italy, Iceland, Costa Rica, Australia and South Africa. Honeymooners want to land in tropical locales such as Maui, French Polynesia, Maldives and Bali. Families will be looking at places as varied as Florida, Hawaii, Italy and Mexico.

French Polynesia

Bucket list. Forget the usual fourstar spot. Luxury travelers want unique accommodations, from tent-free nights under the stars in the desert to private castles without any other guests. In the know. The trend toward immersive experiences shows no signs of slowing down. Think wine tastings with winemakers, shared meals in a host’s home, artisan food tours, opportunities to learn a traditional craft, and more. Luxury travel today is about collecting memories, Home sweet home. Travel around the United States is still expected to be a draw for luxury travelers, with cities such as New York, Maui, Miami/South Beach, Las Vegas, and Napa Valley/Sonoma topping the list.
