The MercedesBenz C-Class also is considered a compact and starts at $38,000, Gonzales said.

models like some other manufacturers that may include certain options and features only in their upscale models,” said Kevin Wilson, a master-certified product specialist at Bell Lexus in north Scottsdale.

“With Lexus, all of the safety features in our most high-end models are available on our compact models as well.” A Lexus IS300 starts at just over $38,000. The larger IS-350 with a more powerful engine starts at just under $42,000.

“Powertrains and vehicle features and packages are certainly helpful to keep in mind when deciding which vehicle suits you best,” Cox said. “Whether you’re constantly on the road or simply driving down the street, you want the best for each and every trip. With no shortage of available powertrains, there is certainly an engine type that will suit your lifestyle.”

Standard features, available options The standard features and options vary by luxury brand, but some luxury compact and mid-size cars come with these standard features: up to 10 airbags, three-position memory for the driver seat, steering wheel and sideview mirrors, lanechange and lane-keep assist technology, remote start through a cell phone and the latest voice-activated technology, among many others. Among some brands, less than $1,000 extra will add self-parking capability or Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. For about $2,000 more, you may be able to include an app suite that lets you order movie tickets, make restaurant reservations and search online, all by using your voice.

Takeaways “If you like a sportier feel with your driving and a car that’s much easier to park than an SUV but with similar cargo space to an SUV,” Wilson said, “a compact may be right for you.”

“Getting to the bare bones of it,” Cox said, a smaller car offers “better handling and fuel economy. The weight of the vehicle is always advantageous on the open road, as opposed to a hulking SUV that certainly takes a punch with miles-pergallon performance.”

“Price point is certainly an advantage with smaller luxury cars,” Gonzales said.

“And the difference in fuel efficiency can be dramatic. At a price that’s affordable, you can get lots of cool standard features in a luxury compact car that may not be available in non-luxury models.”
