Luxury cars: Then and now A look back at yesterday’s lux vehicles By Debra Gelbart

T

oday’s luxury vehicles have sleek lines and are packed with technology. What distinguished the prestige vehicles of 50 years ago were enormous size and smooth rides, said Brian Rygiel, the general manager for Brown’s Classic Autos in Scottsdale. Luxury ride “The cars of that era—Lincolns and Cadillacs, for example— remind me of boats,” Rygiel

said, “with a long stopping distance and a big turning radius. The difference between a luxury vehicle and a nonluxury car in those days was that riding in a luxury car in 1967 felt like riding on a couch instead of in a truck. And the luxury cars in those days featured lots of chrome.” But unlike today’s luxury vehicles, those of five decades ago had huge engines, Rygiel said, and “sucked a lot of gas.

And the braking systems were horrible.” Performance on luxury vehicles rebounded slowly, said Drew Alcazar, CEO and co-founder of Russo and Steele Collector Automobile Auctions

secluded Hawaiian estate with two waterfalls on property. A sprawling 14-bedroom villa overlooking the rolling hills of Italy. A spacious penthouse in the Caribbean with sweeping ocean views. Sound inviting? Airbnb hopes so. The global hospitality company, which brings homes and experiences to travelers around the globe, is expanding its reach into the growing luxury market.

There is no shortage of experiences for travelers currently offered through Luxury Retreats, whether a ski trip in Utah at a deluxe cabin nestled in the alpine woods or a culinary adventure at a retreat in Tuscan truffle country.

Luxury Retreats is known for its highend listings and 24/7 personal concierge service, and is expected to be a perfect pairing for Airbnb with its focus on providing unique travel experiences.

Airbnb is said to be preparing for the launch of “Airbnb Lux” later this year, according to Bloomberg. The luxury tier would offer homes that have been previously inspected to ensure quality, and would allow Airbnb to push higher-end tourism experiences like cooking classes in Florence, beer tastings in Shanghai, and VIP night club outings in Miami. The hospitality company already lists a number of head-turning rentals. A luxe Moroccan experience at the 10-bedroom Riad Farnatchi comes complete with round-the-clock concierge services, a rooftop terrace and spa. A stay at “Seascape,” a 7,000-square-foot contemporary villa in St. Barts, features jaw-dropping ocean views. At South Africa’s Izingwe Lodge, guests are immersed in the lush and wild Welgevonden Game Reserve. The move by Airbnb deeper into the luxury travel market comes as more travelers are seeking high-end accommodations, experiences, and locales, according to a new report by EyeforTravel, a media company focused on travel and tourism. “The luxury traveler already vastly outspends the average consumer and this gap is set to widen as the luxury travel market grows faster than the wider travel market,” the company said. “The luxury hospitality market has doubled since the recession,” and 2017 is seeing a strong showing over a slowdown in 2016. Airbnb is counting on that. Holiday rental on the French Riviera anyone?

Vacation of dreams

In February, Airbnb announced that it had acquired Montreal-based Luxury Retreats, a luxury vacation rental company. With more than 4,000 properties in 100 destinations around the world, travelers can plan the vacation of their dreams in a rambling villa, stately mansion or breathtaking estate.

performance led to a “golden age” for Mercedes-Benz between in 1986 and 1999, with “extremely well-built vehicles and fairly limited production.” Another stroll down memory lane Before that, in the late 1970s, Porsche launched the highly collectible 930 Turbo, Alcazar said. “It represented a pivotal shift in performance in the luxury car market,” he said, with a cool look that still boasted plenty of horsepower and high emissions and crash standards. The luxury brands of the mid-and late ‘70s included Porsche, Mercedes-Benz, Lincoln and Rolls-Royce, he said. “In the mid-1980s, the leading luxury brands were Jaguar and Mercedes, Rygiel said. Mercedes has always been known for its superior engineering,” he said. “And Jaguars were intended for the elite of the elite.”

The Jaguar brand was hurt substantially by the introduction of the Lexus brand shortly thereafter, he said. “The reliability and smoothness of the Lexus ride almost killed Jaguar.” Features and accessories that defined luxury in the ‘80s and early ‘90s included gold-plated emblems, power seats, power windows and a cell phone in the console, Rygiel said. In the mid-1990s, technology features were becoming more and more typical in luxury vehicles, Alcazar said, but they were very expensive to include. Today, power features, cruise control and automatically dimming headlights are standard in most cars, but 20 years ago they were limited to luxury vehicles, Alcazar said. How luxury cars today compare Technology is the biggest difference between luxury vehicles of decades ago and today’s luxury vehicles, Rygiel said. Alcazar said the key difference between today’s luxury vehicles and those of yesteryear is the “quality of their build. They offer really, really great quality now.”

INSPIRED DESIGN

KITCHEN CONVERSATION STARTERS How high-end appliances weave into a home’s overall design BY BRIAN SODOMA

T

oday, it’s a bit of an open canvas for interior designers. While modern grays and sleek straight lines have been a strong part of the conversation, retro or classic themes aren’t necessarily castaways either. When it comes to kitchen spaces, they can either be an extension of a home’s overall aesthetic or a welcomed departure from it. Today’s high-end appliances also add to the design conversation. Here’s a look at how appliances can integrate into a home’s overall concept, sometimes giving a splash of something different or otherwise keeping ideas alive from elsewhere in a home.

Modern flow

Many who love those modern clean straight lines often want to continue that look in the kitchen. Appliance brands like Gaggenau and Dacor can help you, says Melissa Goodwin, marketing manager for Allstate Appliances in Scottsdale. These brands, which also come with their share of technology perks, are popular choices for those looking to extend the modern aesthetic into the kitchen. These brands, and others, come with the ability to overlay cabinet faces onto an appliance’s door, essentially hiding the appliance into the cabinet design.

“You can have everything integrated so that the appliances don’t stand out so much,” Goodwin said. “It’s great for a modern home.” Ernesto Garcia, founder of Ernesto Garcia Interior Design, in Phoenix, says if an appliance like a refrigerator or dishwasher cannot accept a cabinet overlay, it can be a serious design restriction. “If you look, for example, at dishwashers; most have control panels on the top edge now, so you don’t even need to see the front of it,” he added.

Classic touches, splashes of color

Go pro

For those chef-inspired homeowners, the kitchen is a place to make a statement about how much you love to create in the kitchen. In these situations, a kitchen may be a culinary sanctuary that can work as an extension of a modern space or a departure from a more classic theme in the overall home design. Regardless, the look can still be stunning both Garcia and Goodwin agree. For a chef-styled kitchen, clients often look to brands like DCS or Thermador’s Professional line, Goodwin said. With these offerings, you’ll find thick tubular handles, a lot of stainless, and “more of an industrial look,” she noted.

Many people are often surprised to see the variety of colors high-end kitchen appliance brands like Viking or Bertazonni, among many others, bring. “I’m starting to find … royal blues, fire engine reds, and nobs of this type or another,” Garcia added. Many of the lines Allstate carries have a variety of color options; the company also brings its own powder-coating expertise to add even more flexibility. “We can create just about any color you want,” Goodwin added. Garcia says it’s also not uncommon for eclectic designs to pit a classic appliance look in contrast to an otherwise modern aesthetic in the house, and he himself, at times, will even add modern appliances in an otherwise classic-themed kitchen or home. “That newer piece can give a little more pizazz and make it more interesting,” Garcia said. “You may also have these homes left over from the Tuscan (design) wave where everything is so carved and overdone. … In some situations, you can still go with a totally modern kitchen with sleek appliances.”
