Ranch Updates Ethel’s Garden blossoms with new trees

2016 Ranch board officers announced

The Ranch Association Board of Directors elected officers at its May 9 meeting.

Fred Green will remain as President, Susan Grace is Vice-President, Tom Headley will serve as Secretary, and board newcomer Mike Esparza is Treasurer. Upcoming board meetings will be held on June 6 at Desert Camp Community Center and on August 8 at The Homestead Community Center. All board meetings begin at 6 p.m. There is no board meeting in July.

he residents living around Ethel’s Garden recently voted to plant new, smaller ornamental flowering trees to replace the large Sissoo trees that were damaging surrounding property and hardscapes. Ranch Association landscape crews excavated 16 Sissoo trees and replanted with Anacacho Orchid trees. These trees mature at 10-12 feet tall and are adorned with pink or white flowers that nicely complement the vibrant colors of the garden (photo at left shows mature tree in bloom). Thank you to the residents around Ethel’s Garden for their community effort in selecting the new trees, and their patience during the planting.

New technology to aid DC Ranch management Ranch management is developing a new mobile app that will make it easy to contact staff and report areas in the community that need attention. The new app will allow immediate access to Security or Patrol, update guest lists, request maintenance, or report an emergency such as a water line break or gate malfunction.

The software will use GPS technology to pinpoint exact locations, making it easier for staff to locate the reported issue and respond, especially along the expansive path and trail system.

Standards adopted to preserve community beauty The DC Ranch Standards for Homes and Standards for Landscape are complete. The Ranch Association Board of Directors approved the enforcement guidelines for homes at its May meeting and is expected to pass the enforcement guidelines for landscape at the June 6 session, scheduled for 6 p.m. at Desert Camp Community Center. Voluntary compliance and teamwork are key components of the guidelines.

DC Ranch residents take pride in the community and are encouraged to partner with Community Standards Specialists to address identified issues. The easy-to-navigate standards documents are posted in the Community Management section of DC Ranch.com. A printed booklet summarizing the DC Ranch Standards for Homes, Conduct, and Landscape will be mailed to all homeowners later this summer.

Take Note Holiday hours observed for July 4 The Ranch Offices on Market Street and The Homestead Community Center will be closed in honor of Independence Day on Monday, July 4. Residents will have key-fob access to restrooms at The Homestead. Desert Camp Community Center will be open from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Regular business hours will resume Tuesday, July 5.

Cox Communications upgrades Through June and July, Cox Communications will install larger residential pedestals and add six new distribution housing units along roadways. Affected areas include most of the Country Club and Desert Camp Villages, and some Silverleaf neighborhoods. The upgrade will not affect Pioneer or any of the sub-associations in Desert Camp.

Sealcoating projects Re-sealing is planned for roads in the Park & Manor and Estates neighborhoods of Desert Parks Village and in the Tapadero sub-association. Speed hump replacements are also planned for Terrace Homes East, Park & Manor and The Haciendas. In addition, the median at 102nd Street and Horseshoe Drive will be reviewed for improved visibility.

Country Club’s Chef Lenard Rubin competing to be the country’s top chef

resh off winning the 2016 Western Region Chef of the Year award by the American Culinary Federation (ACF), Lenard Rubin, Executive Chef at The Country Club at DC Ranch, has his sights set even higher. Rubin is preparing to compete for the national title against his regional counterparts during Cook. Craft. Create.

The national winner will be named 2016 U.S.A.’s Chef of the Year and receive $5,000.

Rubin will be representing the state of Arizona and the entire Southwest region.

Rubin received the Western Region title at a February competition in Reno. Rubin’s winning dish was a smoked maple-scented breast of pheasant, cooked sous vide, and roasted pheasant leg roulade.

“Being named the regional champion is the honor of a lifetime,” said Rubin. “To prepare for the national competition, I have been training with my mentor and friend, Walter Leible, and studying as much as possible to get myself ready for the ultimate culinary throw-down! Competing in front of my hometown crowd in Phoenix will energize and motivate me to perform at the highest level.”

Rubin has been the Executive Chef with The Country Club at DC Ranch since 2013.

Rubin’s experience includes executive chef, The Wigwam, Litchfield Park, Arizona; executive chef/owner, The Vig and The Vig Uptown, Phoenix; executive sous chef, The Ritz-Carlton, Phoenix; and chef/owner, Medizona, Scottsdale.

Chef Rubin is an avid competitor and has received numerous gold and silver medals in ACF-sanctioned competitions. In 1998 and 2001, he was invited to cook at the James Beard House in New York, and in 2002, he was inducted into the Arizona Culinary Hall of Fame as Chef Extraordinaire. Rubin was a Western Region semifinalist for ACF Chef of the Year in 2011 and 2014. He was ACF Chef’s Association of Arizona, Inc. chapter Chef of the Year in 2006 and 2013 and is the 2016 president of the local chapter.

First quarter sales strong in DC Ranch

Just one quarter into 2016, DC Ranch has experienced robust sales of homes at the higher end of the real estate market.

A total of 63 homes and home sites sold with an average sale price of $1.4 million.

• In the first quarter of 2016, closed sales in DC Ranch totaled nearly $90 million.

• Sales in DC Ranch’s Silverleaf village accounted for more than $46 million of the Q1 sales (including homes and home sites) compared to $24 million in 2015.

• The average price per square foot on homes sold in Silverleaf was $577.

tacey Chulew is a neighbor working to build a connected community. Chulew has collaborated with a dedicated group of residents and staff to make the DC Ranch Women’s Club one of the community’s most successful programs. For four years, the group has planned numerous gatherings and even established a book club. Chulew was Vice Chair of the group from 2014-2015, and is now chair for 2015-2016.

“Stacey’s strengths are her tenacity, her enthusiasm and most of all, her ability to connect with others,” said Judy Headley, who nominated Chulew.

Chulew is also a wife, mother and grandmother. In her spare time, she shares her knowledge as a docent at the Musical Instrument Museum.

ohn Henrickson has served as an NVM, member of the budget and finance committee, and director on the Ranch Association Board. As the chair of the Safety and Security Committee, Henrickson built consensus and led the charge to address speeding, the number one concern of residents.

“John always volunteers to help, professionally completes all his duties, and truly cares about DC Ranch,” said Susan Grace, who nominated Henrickson.

Over the last year, Henrickson co-chaired the effort to develop the comprehensive DC Ranch Standards for Conduct. In all of Henrickson’s work he emphasizes meaningful input from residents and other stakeholders who can contribute to constructive solutions.

ulie Olson has been a philanthropist for many years. She is especially passionate about The Pajama Program (pajamaprogram.org).

The initiative gives new pajamas and books to more than 30 area charities that serve children.

Olson, like her nominator Stacey Chulew, is also a docent at the Musical Instrument Museum and has become actively involved in the DC Ranch Women’s Club.

“Julie helped plan the Women’s Club holiday gathering where we meet, socialize, and donate to a charity,” said Chulew. “We are lucky Julie has chosen to make her home in DC Ranch.”

In addition, Olson recently became involved with the Southwest Wildlife Conservation Center and is helping to spread the word about its great work.

DC Ranch is committed to building relationships with the larger community, so this year’s Volunteer Appreciation celebration included a special service project component. Honorees, guests, and DC Ranch staff worked together to create more than 500 Hope Totes for Phoenix Rescue Mission. The individual care packages contain personal hygiene items that will be handed out to homeless individuals throughout the Valley.

In all, nearly 7,300 items were donated totaling almost 900 pounds. arah McKeighan was the Assistant Stage Manager for The Homestead Playhouse’s production of “The JunGirl Book.” She volunteered for this role, wanting to aid in production elements. McKeighan attended every rehearsal (more than 90 hours), providing support for the director, stage manager, and fellow cast members.

“Sarah takes on responsibility and supports younger members of the cast. She always has a smile and is willing to participate in any activity,” said Lindsay Vanegas, who nominated McKeighan.

Sarah is a member of the National Charity League Cactus Wren chapter. She also volunteers at GiGi’s Playhouse, a Down syndrome achievement center in Scottsdale.

“Through Jim’s generosity, new residents take home all their goodies in one reusable bag. Jim also contributed several articles to Ranch News, including a financial series that spanned several months,” said Jona Davis, who nominated Watson.

Quick trips for the sufferers of travel decision fatigue There are so many things to do in Arizona that it’s hard to settle down, pick a few destinations, and go visit them! You don’t need out-of-state visitors to make it happen. You just need a plan, a vehicle, and your foot on the gas pedal (and perhaps some road trip snacks!)

You can zoom up Highway 17 to get there, but you can also have fun travelling the back roads and seeing some intriguing spots along the way. About 45 minutes beyond the outlets at Anthem (a day trip of its own), stop by Arcosanti, an arts center based on the late Italian architect Paolo Soleri’s concept of Arcology—architecture coherent with ecology. Daily public tours, a café and gift shop, and guest rooms are available.

e’re not talking about the Grand Canyon, one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the world, which is visited by millions of people every year from all over the world. Instead, let’s look at other interesting places you can go within a two to five hour drive of Scottsdale, many of which have cooler temperatures than the Valley.

Sedona (of course) and sights along the way to Flagstaff Sedona’s incredible red rocks are aweinspiring and its art galleries, restaurants, spas, tours and special events make it a

Payson to the Painted Desert If you drive northeast from Scottsdale into the Tonto National Forest, you can hike into a creek-fed canyon at Tonto Natural Bridge State Park. It’s one of the world’s largest natural travertine bridges and has a gaping 400-foot-long tunnel you can walk through. Prefer not to hike? There are multiple viewpoints from above the bridge.

Complete your visit with a cruise down Main Street in Payson, 14 miles southeast of the park, for antique and art shops, the Rim Country Museum and a look at the replica of author Zane Grey’s forest cabin.

Or play with goats and sample artisanal cheese at Fossil Creek Creamery and Fossil Creek Ranch, where you can go on a guided llama hike in the nearby town of Strawberry.

Have you ever hunted fossils? While most sites strictly prohibit disturbing rock formations and art, you can explore the Paleo Site (off Highway 260 about 12 miles east of Payson) to find a host of fossilized creatures embedded among the limestone.

It’s free to hunt for and collect specimens.

A two hour drive south will take you to the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, a natural sciences attraction that features a zoo, botanical garden, art gallery, natural history museum, aquarium, and hummingbird aviary.

One hour further south, Kartchner Caverns State Park in Benson offers a fantastic underground adventure. This “live” limestone cave, discovered in 1974, has unique mineral formations such as stalactites dripping down like icicles and giant stalagmites reaching up from the ground. Inside the cave it averages 70°. Reservations are recommended for the cave tour.

Summer Melon Salad All American Modern Sports Grill

1. Heat gas grill to 450 degrees. Set one side to medium low and the other to medium high. You will cook on the low side and use the hot side to generate more heat when you close the lid.

2. Using tinfoil, create a pan to hold sliced pepperoni, onions, mushrooms or any

other toppings. Place on grill and stir every 2 minutes, until onions are translucent and toppings are cooked through.

3. Pat pizza dough flat and round. Poke lightly all over with a fork. Place directly on grill. Brown 3 to 5 minutes, depending on heat. Rotate pizza 90 degrees, cook for another minute. Using a spatula, flip pizza and repeat on other side.

4. Place sliced mozzarella on dough, leaving ½" space around the outer edge. Dab sauce over cheese. With tongs, evenly sprinkle pepperoni, onion and mushrooms.

Sprinkle black pepper, oregano and grated cheese over the entire pizza. Garnish with fresh basil. Use a pizza paddle or large spatula to remove from grill. Serves one or two people.

Cut the tilapia into six even pieces. Grill, bake or cook using your favorite method.

Place one teaspoon of the pepper mayo in the center of a lightly grilled or warmed corn tortilla. Place the fish on top. Add mango salsa and finish with pickled onion (optional). Serve with lime wedges on the side. Yield: six tacos.

Mix salad ingredients together in bowl, toss with dressing, and top with pickled onions.

Are there seasons in the desert?

es! Here in this part of the Sonoran Desert there are five seasons. The Bajada Nature Trail—an easy-access interpretive trail at the Gateway Trailhead—provides a great overview of the climate changes.

First summer begins in May

and lasts until mid-July. It is also called “dry summer.” The average high temperature is 100°F and the average rainfall is less than a quarter of an inch.

The bajada’s* plants and animals shift their active time to night. Day and nightblooming cacti blossom, and reptiles become active with the heat. Tortoises and Gila monsters are the last to emerge

from their burrows. Then, in late June, it seems that every living thing is waiting.

When will second summer arrive?

Second summer brings a

change in the wind and rising humidity.

Cicadas begin buzzing, and tall clouds build on the edges of the Valley each evening. Summer storms blow in from the south. More often than not, they bring wind, dust, and only the smell of rain.

On some occasions, however, the storm grows quickly and heavy rain beats down, delivering so much water that it can’t soak into the ground.

It rushes into washes and down storm drains. The storm passes quickly, and the bajada is still.

The breath that every living thing was holding is released.

Fall begins in mid-September and

will last through November. The average high temperature is 87°F and low is 61°F, although temperatures can still be above 100°F. As the temperature drops, the bajada’s plants and animals become more active during the day. Birds and monarch butterflies pass through, as this area is an important migration corridor. Even people “migrate” back to the Valley from summer homes in cooler climates.

Fall and winter rain is vital to this area of the Sonoran Desert. Rain during these seasons is gentle and slow, sinking into the ground and revitalizing plants that may not have had water for many weeks.

While spring is known as wildflower season, wildflowers sprout with fall rain and are sustained by winter storms. Without this rain, a spring bloom will see only the hardy.

Winter is a restful season.

The temperature drops to an average high of 67°F and low of 42°F. Occasionally there

will be a freeze or even snow. Many plants and animals are dormant for these few weeks.

Spring begins in mid-February

and lasts through April. The average high temperature is 77°F and low is 50°F. The bajada’s plants and animals burst into action. Young ground squirrels wrestle outside their burrows, birds sing to impress mates, and the flowers compete for the many pollinators in this region of the Sonoran Desert.

Migratory birds pass through the Valley and some stop to make the Preserve their spring and summer home. By the end of spring, reptiles are awake and basking in the sun.

Visit the Bajada Nature Trail at the Gateway Trailhead of Scottsdale’s McDowell Sonoran Preserve to be greeted by the knowledgeable stewards of the McDowell Sonoran Conservancy and learn the answers to many other questions about the biology and geology of the Preserve. *A bajada, or slope, at a mountain's base, is formed of eroded sand and gravel.
