The long-awaited cooler weather of October brings with it many events and programs that give residents opportunities to meet and reconnect. While life in DC Ranch is always busy, the fall season kicks it into high gear.

Mission:

The DC Ranch Community Council facilitates a connected and welcoming community that instills pride and a sense of belonging in each DC Ranch resident.

DC Ranch Women will host a Fall Social in the Camden Foothills “Social Lounge” on October 8. That same evening, you can change gears and enjoy the first fall Food Truck Night at Desert Camp Community Center, featuring two delicious mobile catering crews.

On Oct. 11, cyclists in the annual Tour de Scottsdale will be continually shifting gears as they navigate through the hills and valleys of the 30or 70-mile ride. Organized by the DC Ranch Community Council and benefiting the McDowell Sonoran Conservancy, the Tour begins and ends on Market Street. Whether you are a rider, a spectator, or a supporter of the Preserve, it is an exciting morning.

The Community Council is responsible

for visioning and facilitating initiatives that enhance residents’ quality of life, serve collective interests and promote the DC Ranch brand. The Council provides recreational, educational, cultural and volunteer opportunities that reflect community values; operates and programs DC Ranch amenities; creates outlets for communication; and defines Community-Wide Standards.

Residents are invited to gear up on Community-Wide Standards by attending a resident meeting on Oct. 19. Blending the constructed environment with the natural beauty of the Sonoran desert is one of the many reasons DC Ranch is so attractive.

At month’s end, kids on the Ranch will swing into gear as they celebrate Spooky Carnival: Mad Scientist on Oct. 24. Parents and kids—get into costume and come join the fun!

NVMs are the MVPs of DC Ranch Neighborhood Voting Member election coming next month

M

uch of what you see around the community wouldn’t be possible without behind the scenes help from Neighborhood Voting Members, the “most valuable team players” of the DC Ranch community.

An election of Neighborhood Voting Members (NVM) is coming up next month and is open to all residents. If you want to step up as your neighborhood MVP, then a NVM position is right for you. New NVMs receive training and tools to help make them effective in this volunteer position, which can be tailored to fit most schedules and lifestyles.

Each NVM is the designated voice for their individual communities on matters requiring a vote, such as election of the Ranch Association Board of Directors.

Their tasks vary from greeting new residents with a special gift and heartwarming smile, to surveying neighbors about pending policies, to helping with signage for safety, security

It’s a bird, it’s a plane— no, it’s a drone

T

he Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) recently passed a law that restricts drones and model airplanes from flying within five miles of an airport. DC Ranch falls within the five mile no-fly-zone identified for Scottsdale Airport.

Technically, a drone is known as an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) or Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS). Drones are most often associated with the military but they are also used for search and rescue, traffic and weather monitoring, surveillance, photography and other things. Their popularity for commercial and recreational use has necessitated new safety regulations.

The new regulations prohibit the use of drones for any reason within DC Ranch, unless prior permission is received from Scottsdale Airport. So if you are thinking about putting a drone on your birthday or holiday wish list, please know that flying it within the community is a violation of FAA regulations and considered a safety hazard.

As drones are a fairly new technology, DC Ranch staff will keep residents informed as regulations evolve.

The ultimate citizens’ ride

or novice and veteran riders alike, the Tour de Scottsdale is an exciting and challenging ride. It takes training, perseverance and muscle power to get there (plus a coffee or local brew or two along the way).

If you think Tour riders are all the same, think again. Some are pedaling their first long ride, taking on the 30-mile challenge at the urging of friends or family; others are pushing themselves to ride the 70-mile route. Some are recovering from accidents or operations, working hard to get their new knees or hips ready for the ride. And others are riding at their peak, enjoying the beautiful vistas along the route and the chance to ride with their team. They come from Arizona, California, Nevada, New Mexico, and several Midwestern and East Coast states, as well Eastern Canada and the United Kingdom.

On the morning of Sunday, Oct. 11, Market Street at DC Ranch will see throngs of eager cyclists lining up for a very early start to the day. When the 12th annual Tour de Scottsdale, hosted by the DC Ranch Community Council, is complete, there will be lots of success stories. Not just the speediest of all, but also those whose PR/personal record comes as much, or more, from the doing than the timing.

By mid-morning, 13-year-old twins Sarah and Emily Plant will have completed their first Tour de Scottsdale.

But the Gilbert residents are definitely not novices when it comes to competition—they’ve been active in youth triathlons since the age of seven. Unlike many young athletes who came to triathlons via swim clubs or running groups, the Plant girls are “first generation” —they came directly to triathlons as their first competitive sport.

For Emily and Sarah, the path to collegiate sports may well be fueled by their triathlon prowess and passion. Who knows where they’ll be by the time the 20th Tour, and their 21st birthdays, roll around!

Riding with replacement parts

It’s a family commitment: their mom, Valerie, helps them balance training and schoolwork (they are 7th graders) and drives them 240 miles each week to and from practice. Watching her train was their original inspiration: Valerie completed the 2012 Arizona Ironman in Tempe, along with nearly a dozen other races.

And their dad, Jerry, will be riding the Tour with them, though he anticipates he’ll have a slower pace—he had bilateral hip replacement four months ago, so doing the 30 miles will be a recovery challenge for him.

We’re talking serious training. They work out four days a week with Durapulse TriKids in a schedule that looks like this: swim on Monday; bike/run/strength work on Tuesday; bike skills/transition work on Thursday; long bike ride plus a run on Saturday. Local training locations include Power in Motion Institute, McDowell Mountain Ranch Aquatic Center, and various sites throughout the Valley and the state.

Cycling is a great option for staying fit when high-impact exercises, like running, tennis and racquetball, are no longer an option.

That’s how Clay Wells got “hooked on the bike” and the Tour de Scottsdale. He started riding a couple of years after a 2007 hip replacement; his first Tour was in 2010, so this will be his sixth time riding the 70-mile course. He’s shooting to PR and come in under three hours this year, an extra challenge as he is coming back from a second hip replacement in April.

To get there, he logs an average of 150-200 miles per week, riding with the FASTER training team.

Stauffer rides with Airpark Bikes, located on Market Street, but often trains on his own, juggling the demands of work and kids. Over the years, he talked quite a few friends into riding with him. One of his bike converts, Matt Roadifer, is a Scottsdale police lieutenant who will be riding for the third time this year. Matt has also been on the other side of the ride, working with officers along the bike route.

The unsung heroes of any big sporting event are the volunteers. The Tour has hundreds of dedicated, helpful individuals who get up long before dawn to make sure everything is ready for the riders. For the past four years, Rita Lopez, the advisor of the North High School Future Business Leaders of America, has been arranging for a group of nearly 60 eager high school students to lend a hand at the Tour, and the Run for Ryan House.

“The students love giving back, plus it’s fun for them to see a beautiful new area outside their neighborhood and interact with all kinds of people,” said Lopez.

“They really enjoy it.”

McDowell Sonoran Conservancy benefits from the Tour de Scottsdale

T

he McDowell Sonoran Conservancy (MSC) is a non-profit organization that relies on the continued support of financial donors, including the funds raised by the Tour de Scottsdale. On an annual basis, the Tour generates tens of thousands of dollars that MSC needs to fulfill its mission of promoting the use, protection and enhancement of the largest urban nature preserve in the United States.

The McDowell Sonoran Preserve is owned by the City of Scottsdale and maintained by a public-private partnership between Scottsdale and MSC, a relationship that was formalized in 2011. MSC provides staff and trained volunteers to assist in operations, maintenance, and outreach-related services and activities in or directly related to the Preserve. This includes a comprehensive volunteer stewardship program (e.g., patrol, maintenance, trailhead hosting, and education); facilitating scientific research; website and printing resources; and advertising, special events, and membership activities. Those activities not only require volunteer hours from MSC stewards, they require real dollars.

Tour de Scottsdale funds help to cover a variety of MSC expenses. In addition to day-to-day operational expenses, like payroll, office supplies and web hosting,

MSC also incurs many unique expenses. For example, MSC owns tools and equipment that are used on trail construction and maintenance projects.

These items need to be in good working condition in order to keep the trails in top shape. MSC owns communications equipment used on public hikes so that the hike leaders in the front and rear of the hikes can stay in touch with each other. The Field Institute, which completed and published the first biological inventory of the Preserve, requires materials and equipment necessary for fulfilling its scientific inquiries.

The thousands of hours donated by MSC Stewards are simply not enough.

MSC depends on the funds generated by the Tour to continue its mission.

Funds from the Tour help support research, education and recreation initiatives in the Preserve.

Using advanced strategies to plan for the future

P

lanning for the future is always difficult. Most people’s financial priorities start with making sure they have enough assets to eliminate debt, retire and set aside money for heirs. The first priority in estate planning is to make sure your family is protected by establishing a Will and Trust along with Financial and Medical Powers of Attorney. Currently a married couple can pass $10,860,000 to their beneficiaries ($5,430,000 individually) estate tax free in 2015 if positioned correctly within a Trust.

You might be thinking that your current net worth is less than $10,000,000 so your family won’t have any problems. What’s often not thought about is the future value of money along with interest compounded on a yearly basis.

Here are a few illustrations of how a family’s estate, including homes, business interests, liquid investments, corporate stock, or other hard assets, will continue to grow with a realistic return of 6% per year, and the ensuing tax burden:

Instead of paying a large annual premium up front for 35 years, a significantly smaller financed premium is paid during the individual’s lifetime. The full premium balance is ultimately paid by the death benefit once the insured has passed or it can be paid for with other assets if available. Also, if the policy is placed into an Irrevocable Life Insurance Trust (ILIT), the policy would be held “outside of the estate” so it is not counted in the equation of total estate tax burden. In addition, if the family invested the net annual premium savings ($81,100 in the scenario above) at 6% interest, the funds could potentially grow to over $10 million.

By utilizing these advanced strategies, the estate tax burden for heirs can be minimized and eliminate a lot of the concern of forcing the sale of assets, such as a home, business, or equity portfolio at an inappropriate time.

There are qualification standards for premium financing and individuals should discuss all of the benefits and potential risks associated with this vehicle with a financial professional before entering into an agreement.
