Best time of the year!

I love this time of year! While it’s true we are extra busy preparing for our holiday celebrations, it is also when two of DC Ranch’s community values—family and philanthropy —are most prevalent.

Ranch News is a not-for-profit newspaper published monthly by the DC Ranch Community Council to share timely and relevant information with residents.

The publication seeks to build community by connecting neighbors through stories and pictures and to offer a product valuable to advertisers.

Ranch News celebrates and perpetuates the values of the DC Ranch community.

I was lucky to grow up in a family that spent lots of time together. One of our favorite holiday traditions was participating in community service projects. We baked cookies and took them to nursing homes, we used our allowance to buy gifts for less fortunate families, we helped elderly neighbors decorate their homes. Spending time as a family helping others can make your holiday season much more meaningful.

The DC Ranch Community Council facilitates a connected and welcoming community that instills pride and a sense of belonging in each DC Ranch resident.

In this month’s Ranch News, which is a double issue covering November and December, you will find information on ways that you and your family can give back to others. If your family doesn’t live nearby, invite your neighbors, bridge or golf group to join you.

An easy way to start is at the DC Ranch Turkey Trot on Nov. 8. Admission to the event is one frozen turkey, which will be donated to a local food bank.

Join neighbors and enjoy a leisurely stroll along the one mile walk or run the 5K, followed by a light breakfast. Many Arizona families could not have Thanksgiving dinner without these donations.

The Community Council is responsible for visioning and facilitating initiatives that enhance residents’ quality of life, serve collective interests and promote the DC Ranch brand.

The Council provides recreational, educational, cultural and volunteer opportunities that reflect community values; operates and programs DC Ranch amenities; creates outlets for communication; and defines Community-Wide Standards.

There are also lots of special events to enjoy with your family at this time of year.

Market Street will host the Hot Cocoa Stroll on Dec. 3. PJs and Pancakes, our community’s holiday breakfast, is on Dec. 5. The Country Club at DC Ranch and Silverleaf Club also have holiday activities planned.

However you and your loved ones usher in the holiday season, I hope you create festive memories to last a lifetime.

Ranch Updates New family restroom and remodeled locker rooms at Desert Camp

Traditions are what make celebrating the holidays so much fun.

DC Ranch is proud to celebrate a community tradition that focuses on making new residents feel at home. A core group of volunteers, with help from Neighborhood Voting Members, have been busy making introductions by delivering handmade “Welcome Baskets” to new neighbors with a warm hello and friendly smile. The group has done a tremendous job! More than 160 baskets have been delivered since the Community Council launched the program in January. he locker rooms at Desert Camp Community Center will be remodeled in December and January. The existing locker rooms will be updated with new flooring, countertops, fixtures and paint. A section of the women’s locker room will be converted into a family restroom that will be accessible from the pool area. Desert Camp Community Center will remain open throughout the remodel, and temporary restrooms will be provided during times when the bathrooms are inaccessible. Community Updates Operating budgets set new agendas for 2016 The governing boards of the Community Council and Ranch Association are making budget decisions as the year draws to a close. Community Council oversees DC Ranch amenities such as the community centers, events, social clubs, monthly newspaper, and paths and trails. The Ranch Association operates security and maintains common areas, facilities and neighborhood parks. Following working sessions, each board will approve its budget: Nov. 12 for Community Council and Nov. 18 for Ranch Association. Residents and commercial property owners will receive 2016 budget and assessment details by mail before Dec. 1.

DC Ranch tops the list in home value appreciation 2011-2015 A new real estate report found that “DC Ranch experienced the greatest home value appreciation of any of the eight luxury communities tracked.“ The Matheson Team, a local real estate team, compiled the report, which covers the May 2011-May 2015 time period, with the help of Mike Orr, director of Arizona State University’s Center for Real Estate Theory and Practice. Top reasons why buyers, Realtors and current residents love DC Ranch: location, well-rounded buyer pool, wide range of prices, amenities, and robust private membership sales for the two country clubs.

The Homestead Playhouse rocks the schoolhouse

W

BY CATHA SMITH | COMMUNIT Y COUNCIL hen the actors in “Schoolhouse Rock Live! Jr.” take the stage in November for The Homestead Playhouse’s fall production, they will have learned much more than their lines and choreography. Based on the Emmy® Award-winning educational animated series of the 1970s, the play’s songs cleverly incorporate lessons on grammar, math, history, civics and science. But there’s a lot more going on.

For one thing, it’s a true ensemble production. Unlike most plays, there are no leads; the 31 performers each have speaking roles and solos. The cast members range in age from 7-13 years old; 12 of them are performing in their first play at DC Ranch, while 19 are veterans (some have been in plays here for six years).

It’s the first Playhouse production for director Lindsay Vanegas, who has been working with the actors to create a group dynamic where everyone is important. She loves the energy and enthusiasm of the group.

“They have lots of ideas and it’s challenging to make sure every idea is heard and recognized,” said Vanegas.

“We have a special time at the end of each practice when

the actors acknowledge each other’s hard work and contributions. It builds a pattern of gratitude and recognition that is sometimes hard to find outside of the theatre world.”

This year’s Turkey Trot on Sunday, Nov. 8, gets ready for Thanksgiving in a new way. The DC Ranch Community Council is partnering with United Food Bank to provide Thanksgiving dinner for hungry Arizona families. The goal is to collect 50 gobblers at the Turkey Trot.

You’ll have a chance to connect with neighbors, burn some calories in the community-wide 5K run or one mile walk around the Desert Camp loop, and enjoy a light breakfast after the “trot.” Keep an eye out for the giant turkey! If you “smoke the turkey” by running faster than it does in the 5K, Fleet Feet Sports will have a surprise for you.

Enter the land of the Sugar Plum Fairy on Saturday, Dec. 5, when PJs and Pancakes returns with a theme based on “The Nutcracker” ballet.

Create some warmth in your home by adding glimmering holiday lights. Intertwine garland and glass ornaments to your hanging light fixtures. Set an interesting table for dinner parties. Keep high objects on one end and drape a gold mesh runner down the center. This creates the effect of a waterfall. I like to add fresh flowers along with lots and lots of votive candles.

Holiday Scents

Scents of nature are popular, hinting at the arrival of crisp weather. Pine and other woodsy scents smell like a certain time of the year. They say ‘winter.’ Holiday fragrance can also be brought into a home with diffusers that emit scent into the air through natural reeds soaked in scented oil. Foaming soaps, lotions and scented cleaning products are other options.

From cinnamon and nutmeg to cypress and sandalwood, holiday fragrances stir remembrances of merry gatherings and create a festive ambience.

The Guests

Have playlists for every mood, lots of fragrant candles lit and dimmers on every light switch. I always have something chilling in the refrigerator or iced in the freezer so I can serve a cocktail at a moment’s notice.

Sweet and Spicy Bar Nuts 6 c. unsalted nuts— a mix of your favorites: pecans, cashews, almonds, walnuts, hazelnuts, dryroasted macadamia nuts 1/4 c. agave or maple syrup

2 T. finely minced mixed herbs, such as rosemary, sage, savory and thyme 1/4 tsp. cayenne pepper Salt and freshly ground pepper

2 T. extra-virgin olive oil Preheat oven to 350°. Toss the nuts in a bowl with the agave or maple syrup, olive oil, herbs and cayenne. Spread the nuts on a rimmed baking sheet and toast in the oven until light golden brown, about 15 minutes. Stir occasionally and watch carefully so they don’t burn. Season to taste with salt and pepper; toss frequently until cooled. The nuts can be stored in an airtight container for up to 2 weeks (if they last that long!) Makes a great gift.

Festive Layered Cheese Torta

Cranberry Cordial

2 packages (8 oz each) cream cheese, softened

1 jar (8 oz) basil pesto

1 to 1 1/2 c. sugar

1 750 ml. bottle vodka

1 jar (8 oz) sun-dried tomato pesto

12 oz. cranberries (3 cups)

Strips of lime or orange zest (optional)

8 oz soft goat cheese (can use 100% cream cheese, if preferred)

Bring cream cheese and goat cheese to room temperature, stir to combine. Divide mixture into thirds (about 1 cup each). Line straight-sided mold with plastic wrap. Spoon one-third of cheese in bottom of mold; smooth top with spatula. Spoon pesto evenly over cheese layer, almost to edge. Layer remaining cheese and sun-dried tomato pesto, ending with cheese. Cover; refrigerate at least 24 hours.

To serve, turn mold upside down onto serving platter and remove plastic wrap. Garnish with basil, rosemary and grape tomatoes. Serve with crackers or baguette slices.

In a medium saucepan, simmer sugar and water, stirring until sugar dissolves. Add cranberries and stir over medium heat until berries burst, about 5 to 6 minutes. Cool completely.

Add vodka and citrus zest (if using) to the cranberries and syrup in the pan. Stir well, then transfer to a large mason jar or two, cover tightly. Shake the mixture daily for 2-3 weeks. Strain the mixture into smaller bottles for gift giving.

It will keep for up to 2 months. The strained cranberries can be used to top ice cream or cake; keep refrigerated.

ovember is National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month and several initiatives are underway in the Valley to improve care to those affected.

Dr. Maribeth Gallagher, Director of Hospice of the Valley’s Dementia Program, shared a wealth of information about the impact and cost of Alzheimer’s Disease and dementia during her Oct. 21 DC Dr. Meribeth Gallagher Ranch Spotlight Speakers Series presentation. But even more important was her mindset, a combination of knowledge and deep compassion, about how to help families cope with the inevitable decline.

An enlarged patio area encourages dining al fresco, with seating for about 100 people outside and a similar number inside.

Year-end housekeeping: suggestions to ensure your family is protected

he holidays are coming soon, bringing to mind the many well-deserved charities in need of our support throughout the year. If you are able to make a financial donation to a charity, here a few thoughts to keep in mind.

Cash is king but other non-traditional assets are still valuable Restricted stock, stock options, or non-liquid assets such as land, automobiles or boats are excellent donations for charities, which can sell the assets and use the proceeds. Contact your CPA to help establish the value of your deduction.

Preserve a legacy Naming your favorite charity as a beneficiary in your estate plan or life insurance allows you to assist the nonprofit in future years. You can also explore establishing scholarships, grants or endowments in your name to prolong your family legacy.

Give directly to the charity Consider making a donation directly to your favorite cause to maximize the impact of your gift as opposed to utilizing a third party, which may decrease the amount of your donation.

Holiday reminders: Charitable giving and protecting your family

Make sure the charity is fiscally responsible Ask what percentage of your donation will be distributed to those in need vs. used for overhead and administrative costs. Traditionally, at least 70 percent of donations should go directly to support the charity’s mission.

Fully fund your trust Confirm with your financial advisor and estate planning attorney that the larger assets of your estate (homes, valuables, investment portfolios, etc.) are held in the trust’s name. Your trust should be reviewed or updated with your advisors at least every five years.

Update your beneficiaries Confirm that the primary beneficiaries are updated for your trust, 401K, IRA, and insurance policies. Make sure you have contingent/ secondary beneficiaries in place in case the primary passes away. If your children are under 21, confirm that a custodian has been appointed to act on their behalf until they reach the age of majority (21 in Arizona). Overlooking updates can delay or hinder your intentions.

Prepare for future liquidity needs Estate settlements can sometimes extend for a long period and limit the availability of assets used for daily needs (mortgage and bills) or yearly costs (college tuition). Defend your family with protection (investment savings, insurance, premium financing) to avoid the forced sale of a home, business, or other large asset.

Holiday Hikes

The McDowell Sonoran Conservancy’s public hikes let you experience the beauty of the McDowell Sonoran Preserve and promote the physical and mental health benefits of exercise. During the holidays, the hikes can also be an antidote to overindulgence at the dinner table.

More Pie Please Hike Thursday, Nov. 26 | 8 a.m.

Lost Dog Wash Trailhead

The holidays are all about family. When I was looking over the hike offerings for 2015’s holiday season, I was struck by just how family-oriented each hike was. There is literally something for every member of your family in the Preserve this holiday season, and it’s a great way to spend your family time.

Christmas Hike Friday, Dec. 25 | 9 a.m.

Gateway Trailhead

Start your Thanksgiving Day with an MSC kind of parade. This is a fitness hike designed to burn off some calories and help you feel good about seconds on Thanksgiving dishes. Hikers will cover a 2½ mile loop with a 250-foot elevation gain in approximately 90 minutes. Best of all, it is appropriate for ages 8 and over.

Mistletoe and Holly Hike Wednesday, Dec. 23 | 9 a.m.

Brown’s Ranch Trailhead Hikers will learn how desert plants (such as mistletoe and holly) and animals relate to the holiday season. This is a 3-mile round trip hike with minimal elevation gain that will last about 2½ hours. This hike is designed for anyone age 10 or older.

Holiday time is family time in the Preserve

This Christmas-day fitness hike covers the Gateway Loop and takes you into the heart of the McDowells.

This 4½ mile loop takes three hours and includes a 700-feet elevation gain. The views are amazing.

This hike is appropriate for ages 10 and older.

For anyone who may not be up for a full hike, you can find barrier-free, interpretive trails at the Lost Dog Wash, Gateway, and Brown’s Ranch Trailheads.

Geology of the Preserve Nov. 15 | 3 p.m.

Brown’s Ranch Trailhead Join geology docent/ teacher/author Thomas McGuire to discuss the Preserve’s unique geological features and learn to identify granite, quartz, volcanic basalt, and travertine when you walk the trails.

Native Birds of Prey Dec. 6 | 3 p.m.

Gateway Trailhead Learn the native habitat of local owls, hawks, and falcons and how conservation group Wild at Heart rescues and rehabilitates these majestic birds.

Tour de Scottsdale a success for conservation!

The 12th annual Tour de Scottsdale on Oct. 11 was a testament to athletic will power and a showcase for the beauty of our desert landscape, wrapped in good old Arizona sunshine. The DC Ranch Community Council and the McDowell Sonoran Conservancy are grateful for the participation of nearly 1,700 riders, the volunteers who helped the event go smoothly, and the sponsors whose support of the Tour provides valuable assistance to MSC’s mission.
