A sense of community … it’s one of the DC Ranch values. And it is part of what makes DC Ranch such a special place. In talking to DC Ranch residents, a common theme is a desire for that sense of community, a feeling of connectedness. Perhaps it is a part-time resident wanting to reconnect with others who converge upon DC Ranch each fall, or a new family with children wanting to meet up with other families, or a single retiree looking for a group of friends to play cards or Mahjong.
DC Ranch Community Council can help make those connections. Clubs for men and women provide structured outings where residents can connect while visiting a local restaurant or attending an event. Scheduled Neighborhood Conversations connect residents with each other and their representatives on the Ranch Association and Community Council boards. A new social hour offered each month is designed to create a casual environment where people can meet neighbors and learn their stories. Speaking of stories, the story of DC Ranch’s history was shared and celebrated at the Pioneer Panel in December as the culmination of the community’s 20th anniversary. For those who missed it, the video is on DCRanch.com. The welcome segment by first DC Ranch resident, Mr. Don Ruff, captures the magic of being a pioneer and watching the community grow and develop over the years.

Ranch Association Board of Directors election kick-off
I
t’s time to start thinking about the Ranch Association Board of Directors election. Candidate applications are available Feb. 1 and can be found on DCRanch.com or at The Ranch Offices on Market Street.
The annual members’ meeting is just two months away, at which time the incoming 2019 board members will be announced. This year, there are three seats open as the two-year terms expire for Vice President Elizabeth Kepuraitis, and Directors Dr. Phil Geiger and Fred Green. As candidate profiles are submitted, they will be posted on the website under “Community Management.” A Meet the Candidates Night is scheduled for Monday, March 18 at The Homestead Community Center beginning at 6 p.m. Candidate applications must be received before Monday, March 4 at 5 p.m. at the Ranch Offices either in-person or by mail, fax to 480.513.1505 or email to terri.raimondi@dcranchinc.com.
Be sure to connect with your Neighborhood Voting Member about the candidate choices, as NVMs are responsible for casting votes on behalf of the neighborhood area they represent and serve. If you haven’t met your NVM, call The Ranch Offices at 480.513.1500 and we will make an introduction. In neighborhoods without an NVM, one ballot will be cast for each lot owned. Ballots will be sent by mail. Please confirm that your correct address is on file by calling The Ranch Offices. This year’s annual meeting is Monday, April 1. Board review 2018
s we turn to the future with the upcoming election, here is a look back at the many accomplishments of the 2018 Ranch Association Board of Directors. In one of its first tasks, the Board reviewed and revised the Standards for Conduct, adding regulations regarding the use of drones and the holding of garage sales, among other items. In February 2018, the board approved a speed enforcement program that includes a $300 fine on the first offense for drivers going more than 20 mph over the posted limit on private DC Ranch roadways. In addition to approving the 2019 community

Last year, two Arizona wines won best in class in the largest U.S. wine competition. It may be counterintuitive given our desert climate, but Arizona has several burgeoning wine regions. Nearly a dozen local North Valley chefs are stepping up in the most delicious way possible to support the local Girl Scouts this cookie season—by taking part in the 6th Annual Girl Scout Cookie Dessert Challenge! Through the program, each chef has been assigned one flavor of Girl Scout cookies to use as inspiration for a dessert.
HOW TO GET INVOLVED
Now through February 28, each chef’s restaurant will feature their unique take on their assigned Girl Scout cookie on their menu, with a portion of proceeds benefiting local Girl Scouting.

Girl Scout Cookies will be available all month long. As in recent years, the Girl Scouts will have all cookies on hand for immediate customer purchase.

According to Woodbury, all of the net revenue from cookie sales—100 percent of it—stays within a Girl Scout council’s local area to benefit girls. NEIGHBORHOOD: HORSESHOE CANYON
H
orseshoe Canyon is an intimate place of distinctive aura and beauty set in the Silverleaf Village nestled in the majestic McDowell Mountains. It is named for the natural horseshoe-shape of the canyon as it wraps around the end of Horseshoe Canyon Drive offering a natural sanctuary of high desert and mountain grandeur, a place of quiet solitude and visual engagement. Horseshoe Canyon is also the gateway to the Silverleaf Club and the new 19 casitas of The Village at Silverleaf located close to the club’s entryway. Residents and their guests can catch glimpses of golfers teeing up for holes 1 and 2, the driving range and the final six holes of the back nine of the Tom Weiskopf crafted course. To the north, there are two cozy neighborhoods called The Bungalows and The Parks. The Parks

riginally from Minnesota, my husband and I were first exposed to the Silverleaf area of DC Ranch in 2003. We joined The Silverleaf Club in 2004 and started construction on a Park Villa. In 2015, the Villa sold and we relocated to the Casitas in Horseshoe Canyon.
What I love about the Casitas is the neighborhood feel. It reminds me so much of the neighborhood that I left in Minneapolis, where neighbors look out for one another. I volunteered to be the NVM in order to stay up to date with the happenings in DC Ranch. It has also given me the

opportunity to meet so many of the residents in my area.

Since we had moved around quite a bit before retiring, we never had a chance to really engage in the local communities that we found ourselves in. We wanted to get involved through volunteer work and did that with the American Red Cross, Thunderbird School of Management, the McDowell Sonoran Conservancy and, of course, DC Ranch. Although

we have a second home in the Carolinas, where we spend time with our grandchildren, DC Ranch is where we consider home.
Serving as the Neighborhood Voting Member in the Sterling Neighborhood, and previously at our home in Country Club, I know how important it is to have good communication among residents and with the Ranch Association. Volunteering has been a great way to meet our neighbors, understand the history and operation of the Ranch, and be a part of something from its early stages to the maturity of the Ranch today. It keeps us busy and, for the most part, out of trouble!

Predicting wildflower season
T
here are a wide variety of seeds that are in the soil waiting for the right environmental conditions to trigger the germinating process. These dainty, beautiful wildflower seeds can remain viable in the soil for years and are well adapted to surviving the extreme heat and dry conditions of the Sonoran Desert. Only after all their needs are met will they germinate and grow. The extravagant and dazzling displays that we hope for every spring, the ones that are captured in postcards and photographic magazines, occur only about once a decade in any given place.
THE YEAR OF THE SAGUARO
Last year was a strange one in terms of rain, temperatures and flowering observations. Some of the more interesting detections were the number of saguaro flowers seen on each plant. There were more than normal and maybe the saguaro was producing more to maximize its chances of maintaining the species in such dry conditions. Cacti are fairly reliable in producing flowers each spring partly because they are succulents and can store water that will help during flowering season. The tiny Pincushion cactus, with its delicate pink flowers circling the stem, are usually found underneath shrubs that provide protection from the intense sun. Palo Verde and Ironwood trees have also been known to produce more flowers during poor rain years. Spring virtually didn’t happen in 2018 because temperatures rose quickly and rains never fell. There was a spattering of rains in July followed by a stretch of over 100 hot days without a speck of moisture! As we rolled into October the rain started falling and kept coming
down at regular intervals. By the end of the month, we had measured nearly 7 inches of rain at the Brown’s Ranch Trailhead. Seeds that normally germinate in December were fooled by the warmer temperatures and sprouted. Since the day length was wrong many of them did not flower, but there were a few exceptions. Some of the yellow flowering goldeneye, bursage and brittlebush were still blooming late into the year.
WINTER RAIN IS KEY
Botanist Steve Jones says that December is normally the beginning of a good wildflower season. If the winter rains begin, this will kick off the start of the germination process. Temperatures don’t seem important at this stage of the process. For a good wildflower show, the rains should measure about a quarter inch every couple of weeks throughout the winter and into early spring. Should this delicate and naturally choreographed balance of nature have taken place, we should have a wonderful display of color and a wide variety of flowers throughout the desert landscape.
