As an avid golfer, this is one of my favorite times of year to live in Scottsdale.

The courses are bustling with visitors from across the country—not to mention all of the fans who descend upon the Waste Management Phoenix Open.

Scottsdale truly shines as a golf mecca and we are lucky to have two of the nation’s top golf courses right here at DC Ranch. In this month’s cover story, The Country Club at DC Ranch unveils its plans for an $8.5 million expansion. At the Silverleaf Club, PGA golf pro Edith Wessel shares tips for developing your swing.

I’ll be taking Wessel’s advice to heart as more time for golf is in my immediate future.

This is the last letter I will write as Executive Director of the Community Council.

By next month, I will be serving DC Ranch in the part-time position of Director of Public Affairs. I’m excited to continue to contribute to DC Ranch while having more time to spend with my family—all of whom play golf!

I owe a debt of gratitude to the residents who have served on the Community Council Board of Directors over the last five years. They have provided me with invaluable guidance and support. In addition, I’ve been blessed to lead a top-performing team that works diligently to enhance the DC Ranch brand. I am so proud of all they have accomplished! New Executive Director, Jenna Kohl, begins on February 22. You will read more about her in the March issue of Ranch News.

Ranch Updates Community Council has two board positions open Want to ensure DC Ranch remains a premier community? If so, you may want to consider taking on a leadership role by serving on the Community Council Board of Directors. Two seats are open for a three-year term starting April 1.

The Community Council is responsible for visioning and facilitating initiatives that enhance residents’ quality of life, promoting the DC Ranch brand and serving as liaison to the greater-Scottsdale community. Annually, Council board members approve the budget, monitor financial performance, and evaluate its executive director. Currently, the board holds six board meetings and six work sessions per year. Additional committee work is often required.

Applications are due March 1 to Community Council Executive Director Chris Irish. All applicants will be interviewed by the board’s Nominating Committee. Applications can be found on DCRanch.com or by calling Erin May at 480.419.5326.

The Ranch Association can provide residents with their existing paint palette, or assist with new color options.

Ranch Association Board seeks candidates

T

he Ranch Association Annual Meeting is just two months away on April 2. This year, four board member seats are up for re-election. The current two-year terms are expiring for Board President Susan Grace, Secretary Tom Headley, Treasurer Mike Esparza and Director Don Matheson. Candidate profiles will be posted at DCRanch.com, and a Meet the Candidates night is planned for March 14 at 6 p.m. at The Homestead Community Center. Residents interested in running can submit a candidate application form online, or to The Ranch Offices. The deadline for submission is Monday, March 5, at 5 p.m. Be sure to contact your Neighborhood Voting Member with your candidate selection as NVMs are responsible for casting votes on behalf of the neighborhood area they serve.

At its January 8 meeting, the Ranch Association Board gave a green light to the implementation of a speed camera initiative.

The decision to activate a speed deterrent program was based on years of resident input, consultations with traffic engineers and studies, along with data captured by five electronic speed signs used throughout the community to monitor vehicle speeds.

The speed camera, situated in various areas of the community, will become active in February. Owners, whose vehicles are captured by the speed camera driving more than 20 mph over the limit, will receive a $300 fine upon the first offense. Fines will be issued in accordance with the community’s Standards for Conduct outlined at DCRanch.com/Standards. In accordance with the Ranch Association’s CC&Rs, all owners will be responsible for their invitees. The objective of this program is to improve safety for all DC Ranch residents and guests.

DC Ranch is thoughtfully-crafted to blend with the Sonoran desert. The landscaping within the community is integral to maintaining a balance between undisturbed, natural terrain and enhanced areas of homeowners’ yards. In order to help residents and landscape providers better understand the unique landscape nuances, the Ranch Association is hosting a complimentary educational seminar on Monday, March 19, from 3 to 5 p.m. at The Homestead Community Center.

submittal process will be reviewed as well as various design concepts such as use of artificial turf, desert pavement, granite applications and prohibited plants. In honor of DC Ranch’s 20th anniversary, residents who complete the training will get a $200 credit on modification fees. Landscape providers who complete the course will be added to the DC Ranch Certified Landscape Provider List posted on DCRanch.com and will receive a certificate of completion. To maintain certification, providers must attend a DC Ranch landscape workshop annually.

Scottsdale city council continues to postpone a decision on Desert EDGE, formerly the Desert Discovery Center. The city council is waiting to see whether a local group’s effort to obtain enough signatures for a ballot initiative is successful. The group has until July 2018 to turn in petitions. Current plans for Desert EDGE locate the project off Thompson Peak Parkway just south of the Gateway Trailhead parking lot. The petition language was recently changed from excluding all building in the McDowell Sonoran Preserve, allowing for trails and trailheads to be built without a public vote.

In 2014, the FAA adopted NextGen Flight Patterns at Phoenix Sky Harbor airport.

While the greatest impact was in Phoenix, this change resulted in new Sky Harbor air traffic over DC Ranch. The city of Phoenix filed a lawsuit in August 2017 that led to a U.S. District Court of Appeals decision in favor of Phoenix. In Nov. 2017, the FAA and Phoenix negotiated an agreement, dependent on the federal court’s approval, which spells out that the FAA will return to the previous flight paths on western departures from Sky Harbor “to the extent practicable,” and new flight paths will be developed during a public process next year. The FAA also committed to hold community meetings in April of 2018 to seek input on flight patterns to the east.

The owner of the hotel site at DC Ranch Crossing is set to develop. DC Ranch Crossing is the commercial center where AJ’s is located. Plans have been submitted to both the City of Scottsdale and DC Ranch Covenant Commission for a Marriott Fairfield Inn. The 123 room hotel will sit on the land south of Rosati’s. Expected completion date is summer 2019.

A luxury Independent Senior Living community is planned on land adjacent to DC Ranch at the northwest corner of Pima and Legacy Blvd. A maximum of 200 units in one, two and three story buildings will be constructed. Available to individuals 55 years of age and older, the project envisions long-term lease opportunities, as well as luxury amenities to include a restaurant, coffee bar, salon, swimming pool, and fitness facilities. The main entrance will be off Legacy. The project is being developed by the Wolf Company.

The Community Council engages in public policy advocacy to provide DC Ranch with early identification of matters that may positively or negatively impact the community. The Council’s goal is to be a positive and contributing member of the Scottsdale community-at-large that supports the city’s vitality while enhancing DC Ranch’s desirability. hen approaching a new design project for your home, think of creating a signature environment.

A signature environment is comparable to creating your own personal brand. You’ll want to carry a similar feeling throughout the entire space. While all spaces shouldn’t look exactly the same, they should convey a consistent message to everyone who walks into your home.

Take a moment to think of what you would like to share about yourself. What are some of your favorite things? Who or what makes you happy? Are you a world traveler, sports enthusiast, spontaneous or more structured? Pick items or interests that define your style and represent who you are, then include them in various ways in each space.

For example, if you are an avid gardener, use the outdoors as inspiration for creating your signature environment. Reflect the serenity and beauty found outside, fabric selections, color palettes, breezy window treatments, books on display, floral arrangements, and furnishings inside your home.

How to create your signature environment

Focusing on a few senses can help guide and shape the environment.

Scent Find a signature scent you would like people to always relate to you. Using nature as inspiration, choose a scent that reminds you of your favorite flower or earthy notes.

Sound Music and sounds can affect and enhance our environments. Do you enjoy soft, gentle music playing in the background? Or is it something bold, fun and exciting? Is the sound tied to your inspiration or interests?

For a signature environment founded on a garden consider bringing in a water feature to replicate nature.

Sight It’s important to stick with a color palette that will help keep you focused. You may want to use soft earth tones, or shades of green with hints of bold or soft hues from your favorite flower, for example.

The Country Club at DC Ranch approves expansion to enhance member experience

he Country Club at DC Ranch has announced an $8.5 million expansion to the facility. The expansion will include a new fitness center, group exercise rooms, golf fitness facility, resort-style pool and more. The Club’s goal is to offer a one-stop shop for members.

“The Country Club at DC Ranch has challenged itself to look past the conventional wisdom of Club industry in an effort to create the highest quality lifestyle experience in the market,” said Melanie Halpert, Director of Membership and Marketing at The Country Club. “This expansion will allow The Club to provide more services, programs and activities, designed for every member.”

Back to the basics of the swing

hose who play the great game of golf know how analytical the golf swing can be. The more you delve into the intricacies of the swing, the more complicated it gets. This is the case regardless if you play competitive or recreational golf.

Let’s get back to the basics using the acronym P.G.A.—Posture, Grip and Alignment. These foundations of the golf swing are like the foundation of a house. If the concrete is poured incorrectly and the foundation is uneven, there will be complications in the structure and integrity of the house.

The golf swing is no different.

Posture is extremely important, as in any sport. The correct “address” position creates the ability to turn the body and swing the club. While some have physical limitations that can make golf difficult, most are able to set up to the golf ball in an athletic position. Stand with feet shoulder width apart, tilt at the hips and gently flex the knees. Arms should hang down loosely. The spine should remain relatively straight; not too arched or rounded.

Grip the club loosely. For the right-handed golfer, the left hand should be placed so the “V” formed between the thumb and the index finger points toward the right shoulder.

The right hand should gently fit below the left hand with the “V” also pointing to the right shoulder. For the left-handed golfer, the “V’s” should point toward the left shoulder.

Alignment is one of the more challenging parts of golf especially since every shot angle can be different. If you keep your alignment consistent on your full shots, you will be more successful. Visualize railroad tracks; one track being the target line where you want the ball to travel. The other line, parallel to the target line, is the line in which your body aligns itself. Make sure your feet, hips and shoulders are all in line with each other and parallel to your target line.

The beauty of golf is that it’s a lifetime sport.

Whether you have been playing for 50 years or just starting, keep it simple and remember the acronym P.G.A.—Posture, Grip and Alignment.

While DC Ranch has evolved over the past 20 years, one thing is for certain—it just gets better with age. And for good reason, too. Architect, Dale Gardon, who was a Principal with Vernon Swaback Associates at the time and the Lead Planner for DC Ranch, was charged with designing the finest master-planned community of its time.

“This was DMB Associates’ first entre into master-planned communities,” said Gardon. “It was a chance to influence something they hadn’t done before, but that meant it had to be the best in every possible way.”

“What we have learned from DC Ranch is there are three aspects to development that are equally important—architecture, planning, and creating a sense of place. Without one, the community has a much harder time thriving long-term.”

But for DC Ranch, he needed to think outside of the box.

“Conventional wisdom stated that repetition and sameness were keys to maintaining home values,” said Gardon. “If everything looked the same, the community would appreciate as a whole.”

Having grown up in neighborhoods on the East Coast, however, Gardon believed diversity in architectural character could bring more value to a master-planned community— so long as it was done right.

“We partnered with more than a dozen builders to create homes of varying styles, sizes, and scope so

that residents of different economic and life stages could live in tandem,” said Gardon.

Though a more streamlined approach would have been easier for the developer, the builders, and the City of Scottsdale, Gardon believes the unique neighborhood design created a greater sense of community. Along with diverse architectural styles also came a focus on “front-porch” living—a throwback to an important aspect of community life that, for some reason, faded away in the post-World War II era.

“I remember people sitting on their front porches when I was growing

up. The neighbors would wave as my friends and I rode by on our bikes.

Everyone knew one another,” said Gardon. “But since that time, so many developments focused on moving people to their walled backyards— that really prohibited neighbor interaction.”

With DC Ranch, Gardon took a chance and flipped conventional wisdom on its side. He designed neighborhoods which focused on front-porch living surrounding a central park or gathering space, placed pocket parks at the end of cul-de-sacs for leisure activities, and created places like Market Street where the community could gather.

Speaking of long-term, how has DC Ranch stood the test of time after 20 years?

“So few communities get better with time. At DC Ranch, however, the more that is built the more the community is enriched.

The development of DC Ranch is attributed to the collective understanding that even the smallest details matter. And when all the pieces come together, a truly remarkable community can flourish.

he McDowell Sonoran Conservancy champions the sustainability of Scottsdale’s McDowell Sonoran Preserve for the benefit of this and future generations. Stewards connect the community to the Preserve through education, research, advocacy, partnerships and respectful access.

The quest for sustainability is transforming the competitive landscape, encouraging organizations and citizens to change the way they think about products, technologies, processes and business models.

A refillable water station has been added to the Gateway Trailhead, with plans for additional water stations to be installed at other trailheads. As residents, advocates and users of the gorgeous Preserve, you can make an immediate and lasting positive impact on our natural resources.

By using a reusable bottle rather than a disposable one, you can save money. Bottled water costs up to 500 times more than tap water— often for the same product.

Using a clean, BPA-free, lead-free, reusable bottle can reduce toxins and bacteria introduced to your body.

Bottled water requires an incredible amount of oil and fuel to produce and transport. In addition, production and transportation of bottled water greatly releases large amounts of air and water pollutants, and toxins.

Most would think the better choice is to have a reusable bottle, yet millions of bottles of water are purchased every day. We all have the choice to make a change for the environment, the economy and our personal health.

As a non-profit organization, the Conservancy works closely with the City of Scottsdale to patrol and maintain the Preserve’s trails, and provide information to visitors to make sure they have a safe and enjoyable experience. A team of volunteer Stewards educates both adults and young people about the history of the Preserve.

How water use can benefit the Preserve

Using refillable water bottles in lieu of disposable plastic water bottles is not only easy and inexpensive, it provides significant environmental benefits. Most Americans have access to clean drinking water; however, the United States is the world’s largest consumer of bottled water.

Plastic water bottles are becoming a growing segment of the municipal solid waste stream in the United States. The American Chemistry Council estimates the average consumer uses 166 plastic water bottles each year and 2.5 million plastic bottles are thrown away every hour. While plastic water bottles offer convenience, they also create unnecessary waste in landfills.

People often claim the reasons they buy bottled water are because of convenience, supposed health benefits and better taste. Many studies have shown that using a reusable bottle is not only fiscally responsible but it’s beneficial to your health, as well.

In recent years, the Conservancy has also grown its ability to conduct scientific research. It entered into a contract with the City to make management recommendations in areas such as the restoration of degraded areas and the removal of non-native plants.

DC Ranch will partner with the Conservancy for the “20 for 20: Hiking Challenge” to honor the community’s 20th Anniversary.
