Ranch Updates April 3 annual meeting has full and fun agenda The Ranch Association annual meeting will feature lively discussions, the board of directors election results, and a chance to meet new executive director Darren Shaw. Highlighting the event will be a talk

esidents are invited to attend a meeting about the lighted athletic field to be built in DC Ranch.

Recent discussions between Great Hearts Academies and the City of Scottsdale have now determined that a shared use agreement is possible. This will enable Great Hearts to build the lighted football/ soccer field, along with other sports amenities, on

DC Ranch is looking good thanks to the efforts of landscape crews who have been sprucing up common areas, parks, paths, trails and streetscapes throughout the community.

More than 3,000 new plants and trees have been added around the Desert Parks and Desert Camp villages. A special revegetation project was also completed in the Camelot Haciendas neighborhood along the trail system.

In the coming weeks through mid-April, focus will be directed to the mailbox areas, intersections and neighborhood entrances in the Country Club village as well as all parks in the Windgate and Horseshoe areas of Silverleaf. Streetscape improvements are scheduled for the Sterling Bungalows in Silverleaf. As we move into May, improvements and erosion repairs will be made to the path system along Pima Road. After planting season, landscape crews will focus on maintenance and storm clean up as the monsoon season approaches in mid-June.

Moving the field from its original site at the Corporate Center to the city-owned park land allows for establishing restrictions that are enforceable by the city. The Community Council has formed a resident committee to work with the city and Great Hearts on developing these restrictions. Please RSVP in advance on the DCRanch.com calendar.

The new DCRanch.com launches this month DC Ranch is pleased to announce the launch of a new website that will provide greater convenience and improved functionality for residents. It will launch in late April and have a vibrant new look. Residents will be able to easily access all of the features they are used to, and some new ones, including: • registering for events through the calendar • reserving tennis and pickleball courts online • accessing board of directors’ agendas and minutes • filling out Security forms including gate access • locating Neighborhood Voting Members

All of these items will be combined into one resident section, accessed through a single login. Residents will also have a specially designed homepage to keep them up-to-date on important community information and upcoming events.

New Ranch Association executive director takes the helm

D

arren Shaw joins the DC Ranch team this month as executive director of the Ranch Association, bringing 30 years of large-scale community management experience to the community. His experience includes overseeing community associations, golf and country clubs, and food and beverage operations. Most recently, he served for 10 years as general manager at The Villages Golf and Country Club in San Jose, Calif.

Shaw is an active member of the California Association of Community Managers (CACM) and one of only a few to achieve its premier certification: Master of Community Association Management (MCAM).

He received additional designations for large scale management and active adult community management from industry associations, including the Community Association Institute (CAI) and Community Managers International Association (CMIA).

Shaw was an invaluable resource for CACM as a subject matter expert, course instructor, speaker, and law

journal guest editor. He also served on the CACM Board of Directors and on its Legislative and Legal Steering committees until moving to Scottsdale.

Prior to The Villages, Shaw was general manager of the Tahoe Donner Association, a resort and golf community of 6,400 homes near Lake Tahoe, Calif., where he also managed downhill and cross country ski areas and programs. He also spent four years in the U.S. Navy.

Now, as he settles in to his new role, Shaw tells Ranch News about his main priorities as executive director, and what he is most looking forward to about working on the Ranch.

What drew you to leave California and come to DC Ranch?

I’ve always been attracted to Arizona, but for one reason or another have never made the decision to live here, despite having opportunities through the years. At this point in my career, the timing is right. Knowing that DC Ranch is one of the finest master-planned communities not just in Arizona, but across North America, I thought the match might be a good one.

How does your last community compare to DC Ranch?

There are a similar number of homes in each community, roughly 2,600.

But at my previous community, 90 percent of the homes were condominiums. I was also responsible for overseeing the golf course operation and its associated clubs, as well as the clubhouse restaurant and other food and beverage operations.

At DC Ranch, I believe my position will allow me to focus on making sure the business is fined-tuned and that the financial investments and infrastructure—the roads, facilities, and landscape—are properly and efficiently managed. Maintaining the community in a manner that contributes to a high quality of life for residents will always be a priority.

What experiences or skills learned from your previous communities are you eager to bring to DC Ranch?

I have had the opportunity to learn from a number of top-notch industry leaders who mentored me in the early years, and who I still seek advice from today. I’ve managed or have been involved with all types and sizes of communities and clubs. I’ve learned to become a keen manager in terms of process and application, and I’ve learned to lead people with collective efforts focused on positive outcomes.

Above all, I’ve learned to listen. I read a quote recently that said “Leaders who don’t listen will soon find themselves surrounded by people who no longer talk.” That’s when the operation starts failing. I always encourage engagement and collaboration—from residents calling with comments and suggestions, to board members wanting to institute new programs.

Staying with an organization over several years is important not just because of stability, but because it creates a foundation. It takes a couple of years to master an executive director or general manager position in a community on the scale of DC Ranch, as well as to understand the nuances of the organization.

What ideas or perspectives would you like to bring to DC Ranch?

Go slow to go fast—that work motto has served me well. My credibility in the community hinges on my ability to make solid and well-considered decisions. You have to make sure your advice is sound and you’ve considered all aspects. Once you do the work and can be confident in a decision, then it’s time to move forward.

What is your main goal your first year at DC Ranch?

To learn. The first year is going to be an educational process. I want to meet with various team members, residents, and stakeholders to develop a well-rounded understanding of what makes DC Ranch so special. I plan to spend a lot of time listening this year and observing. In order to make smart decisions and give professional advice, community knowledge will be imperative, so that will be my primary focus.

The hard way, the best way

When Erik Humphrey was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor in 2003, he was given two choices.

He could receive standard treatment with only a 20 percent chance of surviving for the next three years. Or, he could enroll in a clinical trial for a randomized experimental treatment that had at most a 50 percent success rate. Half of the patients were given the standard treatment and half were given the new treatment.

After discussing the options with his wife, Katie, Humphrey saw this as a matter of stats and luck.

“I found out that 99 percent of brain tumor patients enroll in trials, because the alternative is pretty dismal,” said Humphrey. “Knowing that,

the choice was clear. I wasn’t going to sit back and feel sorry for myself and let the tumor take over.”

After the initial surgery to remove the tumor on the right side of his brain, Humphrey underwent 12 months of aggressive chemotherapy and six weeks of radiation. His experimental treatment was a success and hailed as a miracle.

“Everything went right with his treatment plan,” said Katie.

In fact, the regimen went so well that it is now the standard treatment for brain tumors at Barrow Neurological Institute, where he was treated by Dr. Kris Smith.

“I learned that being proactive and aggressive with treatment was the way to go,” said Humphrey. “And my recovery was just as vigorous. I forced myself to go back to work two weeks after the surgery.”

Just three years later the Humphreys had a daughter, Anna, and then twin boys, Charlie and Bennett, in 2010.

Then, in 2014, Humphrey realized his dream and opened his own interior design firm and furniture store, Hyde Park Interiors. He began his career in the fine furnishing and design business 25 years ago. He has designed fine homes and retreats for clients all over the United States. Humphrey also has a passion for remodeling and restoring homes, and has undertaken several projects in Idaho and Arizona.

Born and raised in Idaho, Humphrey moved to Arizona in 1990 to pursue a Bachelor’s Degree in Finance from Arizona State University. His ability to create beautiful environments while being sensitive to the financial parameters of each project is a unique specialty in the design industry.

“Hyde Park Interiors is named in honor of the Hyde Park neighborhood of Boise. The homes are elegant and timeless, which gave me a lot of inspiration to pursue interior design,” said Humphrey.

Last December, the Humphreys opened Hyde Park Fine Rugs on Market Street at DC Ranch. They eventually hope to grow the business into more markets throughout Arizona and the country.

Though the surgery left Humphrey with limited use of his left side, he still enjoys an active lifestyle including snow skiing and hiking with his family.

ince February, a group of 35 young residents and neighbors have joined Arts and Education Coordinator Lindsay Vanegas and a team of four directors in preparing to present “Shrek the Musical Jr.” to DC Ranch.

This hilarious retelling of the Dreamworks movie invites audience members to laugh along as Shrek saves the feisty Princess Fiona from a terrifying dragon, at the request of the devious Lord Farquaad. Along with a wisecracking donkey and a band of fairy tale misfits, Shrek fights for what’s right in the face of adversity, learning about himself and others in the process.

Individually, the young people in the cast will have put in nearly 100 hours of rehearsal by opening night, and have spent that time growing as actors and as individuals. The play’s

main focus is on learning to love oneself, overcoming hardship, and accepting the differences of others.

These themes have been the building blocks during rehearsals, helping cast members to nurture skills beyond acting and singing. The cast and crew are very excited to share this adventure with you.

Arizona sports: front office charts strategic plays

ports is a big-time entertainment business, a multi-billiondollar industry finely tuned to capture the loyalty of fans.

Most of that attention, not surprisingly, is focused on the players and coaches, the public faces of the team on the field, court, or ice. That’s the “sports” side of the business.

By contrast, the “business” side, also known as the “front office,” works behind the scenes and manages the team’s corporate functions. That includes decision-making positions like team president/ CEO, general manager, business manager, facilities, security, communications, marketing/advertising/promotions, ticket operations, community relations, and legal.

Some decisions are relatively easy; others are agonizingly complicated, especially in the light of global competition, social media, and rising player and fan expectations.

How do Arizona sports teams handle all the challenges? What are the tough—and exciting—issues they face? We’ve assembled a team of front office all-stars for the final Spotlight Speakers Series talk of the season to discuss these issues.

An estimated 42,000 children ages 0-3 in Maricopa County live in poverty and need assistance. Federal programs like Food Stamps and WIC do not cover diapers.

DC Ranch's goal is to collect 1,000 diapers by May 10 for the Diaper Bank of Central Arizona, which distributes diapers to many nonprofit organizations in the Valley.
