2019 Annual Members’ Meeting
T
he Ranch Association hosted its Annual Members’ Meeting April 1 at The Homestead Community Center where 120 residents attended. Delectable small plates of favorites were provided by Fleming’s Steakhouse and Wine Bar, recently named Community Partner of the Year by the DC Ranch Community Council. DC Ranch Association Executive Director Darren Shaw highlighted Ranch Association achievements from the prior year and talked about the focus for 2019 which is heavily influenced by DCR2020. Initiatives include sustaining financial stewardship, maintaining the highest level of landscape and appearance, attracting, training and retaining the highest quality of staff and leadership, preserving

the annual meeting said their goodbyes to outgoing member Fred Green who served DC Ranch for nine years on the Board of Directors. Green held the secretary, vice-president and president positions over his tenure. His contributions were instrumental in guiding the development of the Community Standards and starting community discussions regarding airplane noise when Sky Harbor flights were rerouted over DC Ranch. DC Ranch hosts state-wide event a safe environment, fostering open and transparent communications, optimizing governance structure, investing in infrastructure and technology and positioning DC Ranch as environmentally sustainable for the future. The 2019 election results capped off the evening. Three members were elected to serve a two-year term on the Ranch Association Board of Directors. Incumbents Elizabeth Kepuraitis, Phil Geiger and newcomer Geoff Wilner received the greatest number of votes with terms that commenced April 1 until April of 2021. The newlyelected board members will join Susan Grace, Mike Esparza, Stephen Koven and Vince Durocher in serving the community. Officers will be elected at the Board’s May 6 regularly-scheduled meeting at The Homestead Community Center.
Road work to begin mid-month
The Arizona Landscape Contractors Association (ALCA) recently held its Sustainable Landscape Management (SLM) program at The Homestead Community Center to provide SLM certification. Fourteen DC Ranch landscape staff attended and earned certificates which are valid for two years. The goal of SLM certification is to learn how to implement practices that preserve limited and valuable natural resources such as water, reduce waste generation and strive for longevity and maturity of plant materials. Certified landscapers earn a spot on ALCA’s website so that prospective clients may view those that promote sustainable practices. For more information, visit alca.org. These efforts support the DCR2020 Strategic Initiative to position DC Ranch as sustainable for the future.
Roadway improvement projects are slated to start later this month in a handful of neighborhoods. The work will mostly consist of crack-sealing, patching and seal coating. The work will take place in the Camelot neighborhoods along the south loop of Desert Camp, parts of the Country Club Village, Wingspan Way in the Upper Canyon of Silverleaf and at the Desert Camp Community Center parking lot. Final schedules and timelines for the road improvement work are in the process of being finalized. Please ensure that your email is on file in order to receive notifications of the road repairs. An unusually wet winter and spring greened up the desert. That vegetation will become dry this summer and increase the risk of wildfires. Scottsdale Fire recommends 30 feet of defensible space outwards from homes. This means removing weeds, branches, brush and dried or dead vegetation (fire fuels), to help keep fire at a distance and reduce the risk of flying embers.

Javelinas are herd animals and are classified as big-game animals in Arizona. They are protected

by state law. From time to time they may visit DC Ranch properties causing damage. To avoid having to replant, try using javelina-resistant species. A list is available from the Arizona Cooperative Extension, and check with our Community Standards

Newsworthy Scottsdale Bond Election being considered

A general obligation bond election looks to be on the horizon for Scottsdale voters in November. The City Council has identified a financing structure that will repay the bond without raising property taxes.
POOL RULES TO REMEMBER
Scottsdale residents last approved a bond in 2000, almost 20 years ago. Passage of a bond would allow the City of Scottsdale to build, repair, expand or maintain infrastructure projects to effectively and efficiently serve its citizens. The projects are geographically-diverse and cover a wide-range of issues to include public safety, infrastructure, parks, public buildings and technology.
Based on voter input, collected at bond open houses and online, Scottsdale City Council will determine what projects will be included in the bond. For the latest information, visit scottsdaleaz.gov/construction/unfunded-cip-projects

SILVERLEAF CLUB WELCOMES NEW EXECUTIVE CHEF Born in Vienna, Austria, Rene Lenger grew up in a restaurant family. At the age of 15, against his father’s wishes, he began an apprenticeship at one of the best restaurants in Austria and eventually graduated at the top of his class from the Culinary Institute of Vienna. It was a twist of fate that brought Lenger to Silverleaf. After living and working in New York City for over a decade, in 2006 Lenger got the opportunity to work at The Wynn in Las Vegas, which had opened in 2005. “The only thing I knew about Vegas was
Lenger started in October and has since revamped the whole menu. “I’m still in the honeymoon phase of creating and developing a food culture … to put a stamp on how food and beverage is looked at here. I have built a restaurant within a club,” he says. The new menu includes favorites like Pork Schnitzel (a twist on the chef’s native comfort food), Chicken Parmesan with house-made pasta and fresh tomato sauce, Wagyu filet with wild mushrooms and Branzino with butternut squash. He confidently explains, “My philosophy is to use a few key ingredients and really let the star on the plate shine. When you have a great product, cuisine doesn’t have to be complicated.” With that goal in mind, fresh seafood is flown in same day, lamb is sourced from a small family farm in Australia, and prime beef is hand selected and dry aged to the chef’s specifications on site.

Since March, Twisted Infusions has planted varieties of heirloom seeds in the garden located behind Copper Ridge Elementary. The seeds get a head start in a hydroponic system and are then transferred and maintained, offering first pick to Chef Rubin. In addition to fresh herbs and seasonal product, Twisted Infusions brings exotic flavors like wasabi arugula, oyster lettuce
When faced with challenging questions about the future of the DC Ranch Community Garden, Community Council reached out to local partners to find a way to continue the garden program. Executive Chef Lenny Rubin and CEO Kyle Draper of the Country Club at DC Ranch recognized this as a great opportunity to create a partnership and grow locally-sourced, organic produce for their new restaurant, Ranch House, opening in May. As an inductee into the Arizona Culinary Hall of Fame, Rubin was also recently voted 2018 Best Country Club Chef in Arizona Foothills magazine. Always on the cusp of innovation, he reached out to Twisted Infusions, a local business run by garden experts Heather and Bryan Syzmura, to successfully support the farm to table experience he wanted to incorporate at the club.

Procedure 1. Cut off both ends of each cucumber, cut in ¼’s lengthwise 2. Divide cucumbers and dill into four, 1 pint canning jars with lids 3. In a small sauce pot, bring vinegar, salt, sugar, peppercorns, cardamom seeds, cumin seeds, turmeric and 2 cups of water to a boil and stir until the salt and sugar is dissolved 4. Pour hot liquid into jars, dividing evenly and cover 5. Let cool at room temperature and then chill in the refrigerator 6. Enjoy! Will last months in the refrigerator

Like Vegas, Lenger sees the club as customer driven and catering to what members want, but that’s where the similarity ends. “We get to know the guests here and develop a relationship. This is an extension of their home,” he says. Silverleaf Club offers four dining areas and a recently expanded patio with a beautiful view of the private golf course.

and white strawberries to the mix. “We’ve been able to evolve the menu and infuse new ideas of food over the years. I’m excited to tailor the menu with healthier, plant-based choices,” Rubin says.
This endeavor will also extend beyond the restaurant. Later this year, Country Club staff will share planting tips and recipes with Copper Ridge educators. Plans include creating and maintaining a demonstration plot with local youth organizations and on-site programs showcasing Chef Rubin’s new menu. “This is an excellent example of the community pulling together to find a solution to continue the DC Ranch Garden experience,” says Beth Overton, Community Council Facilities and Recreation Director. With over 1,600 members, the Country Club is pleased to offer something for everyone. In fact, 99 percent of their menu can accommodate dietary restrictions. “I tell my staff to cook from the heart—like you’re cooking for family. And the members really feel it,” says Rubin. With regular special events and themed dinners, Thursday night remains the busiest with $5 burgers followed by Saturday night with halfprice bottles of wine.

DC Ranch works to be a proactive participant in the planning and direction of key projects and initiatives—even if they are outside of DC Ranch’s governance jurisdiction. With interest in maintaining the quality of life to which residents have become accustomed, DC Ranch is committed to being part of the discussion on Scottsdale matters that can impact the community.
Chris Irish is the Director of Public Affairs for DC Ranch; her work in that role is one of the most visible ways DC Ranch honors its promise to residents and maintains a relationship with the community beyond its borders.
“DC Ranch’s reputation and desirability are intricately tied to Scottsdale’s stature as a world-class city that is a great place to do business and raise a family,” said Irish. “It is in the best interest of all involved for DC Ranch and the City of Scottsdale to work together.” In the past year Irish has been at the forefront of the community’s engagement in several important public policy matters: • 2019 City of Scottsdale Bond planning process • Arizona State Land Trust planning process • Private development projects near DC Ranch • Reata Wash Floodplain management

Ornamental fountain grass is a wildfire danger

ountain grass (Pennisetum setaceum), a native of North Africa, was imported into Arizona as an ornamental landscape plant. Once introduced, it rapidly escaped yards and common areas to spread across the natural landscape, including into Scottsdale’s McDowell Sonoran Preserve. Sadly, this greatly increases the danger of a catastrophic wildfire because this grass, as well as another invasive grass known as buffelgrass (Pennisetum ciliare), are highly flammable. Both grasses dramatically increase the fuel load for fire consumption, compared to native plant communities.
In addition to the fire hazard, fountain grass and buffelgrass crowd out our Sonoran desert native plants, reducing biodiversity so critical to wildlife habitat and food supply. These grasses also compete with native species for water, making it harder for them to survive and thrive. For direct evidence of fountain grass invasiveness, hike the Quartz Wash trail. As you trek deeper into the wash, you'll see an increasing prevalence of fountain grass, with some areas so infested that other plants are hard to spot. In fact, recent surveys by the McDowell Sonoran Conservancy Field Institute show that over 60 acres of the Preserve are dominated by these invasive grasses. Today, many groups are working to reduce the presence of fountain grass, including the Scottsdale Fire Department, the Department of Forestry and Fire Management,
The City of Scottsdale, and the McDowell Sonoran Conservancy, a volunteer group that helps manage Scottsdale's Preserve.

Despite the fact that these plants are prohibited by DC Ranch, many have appeared in yards across the community because of their prolific seed production and ease of spreading via wind, tires and sneakers. To help combat this problem, the Conservancy recently completed a program whereby residents could trade in their invasive fountain grass for a native grass plant. Participants dug out the fountain grass (including the root system), took a photo of the removed plant, and safely disposed Buffelgrass
of it. Then they brought the photo to one of three participating Scottsdale libraries where they received an attractive native grass (purple three awn, Aristida purpurea) as a better replacement. This grass is available at many local nurseries, and it would be a great choice for your yard, too.
