May is a busy month for almost everyone. Mother’s Day celebrations are planned in many households. Seasonal residents prepare to head north or east for the summer.

For others, it’s a time to take off on new travel adventures in order to escape the summer heat.

For families, school lets out this month! If you are trying to find fun and engaging activities for the kids over the next couple of months, we’ve got you covered. From summer arts camps to swim team and sports camps, summertime at DC Ranch is bustling with activities.

Whether or not you have children, we’ve also compiled a great list of free outdoor concerts around the Valley. May is a wonderful time to take advantage of the pleasant desert evenings before the real heat sets in.

Gardening enthusiasts still have some time to prepare their flower and vegetable beds for the hot months ahead. The DC Ranch Garden Coach, Tyler Storey, has a helpful article on page 15 about water and mulch to ensure your plants stay healthy.

May is also a perfect time to wrap up your spring cleaning, spruce up your home’s exterior, and show a little love to your landscaping before summer is in full swing.

In March, the Community Council Board of Directors selected its officers: President Pat Simpson, Vice President Ron Belmont, and Secretary/Treasurer Mark Eberle. The board voted to re-elect Jill Edwards Resnick for a new term. Melinda Gulick, Marc Blonstein, and Bud Kern continue as board members.

In the coming year, several initiatives will be spearheaded by the Community Council. Strategies and tactics for DCR 2020, DC Ranch’s Strategic Plan, will be identified and implemented. Brand management work will continue, and several projects will be planned to celebrate DC Ranch’s 20th anniversary in 2018.

This notification helps the Security team better accommodate any visitors (e.g., delivery drivers, vendors, tenants) that may need neighborhood access while residents are away, and also to be alert for suspicious activity around the home. Landscape workshop attracts crowd

T

he first in a series of DC Ranch landscape training workshops drew a sizable crowd on March 20. Nearly 70 homeowners, landscape providers, and landscape architects attended this informative session to learn DC Ranch-style techniques and standards for homeowners’ properties and common areas in sub-associations. Landscapers who completed the course received compliance certification and are now on a certified landscaper list.

Residents who completed the session received a $100 credit for use towards a future modification. Much of the session focused on the many design elements particular to DC Ranch such as tree trimming, street tree maintenance, arroyos and desert pavement. That’s the approach a group of young DC Ranch residents are using to raise awareness about blood cancer and celebrate those heroes who have battled and beaten the disease. The six girls, ages 8-11, are organizing a Super Hero Dance at The Homestead Community Center on Friday, May 12. They are dedicating 100 percent of funds raised to adolescent and young adult blood cancer research in honor of Dr. Allison Rosenthal from Mayo Clinic.

Feed My Starving Children

FMSC targets feeding programs to children who are in the most severe circumstances, those suffering from severe malnutrition and threatened with death from starvation. It partners with organizations in 70 countries around the world that distribute FMSC food daily in schools, orphanages, medical clinics and feeding programs to break the cycle of poverty.

FMSC volunteers actively contribute to making a difference in the lives of children. In 2015, more than one million volunteers packed nearly 273 million meals.

The primary food program is a Manna Pack, which contains rice, dehydrated vegetables, soy and additional vitamins, minerals and seasonings to make a tested nutritious meal that is essential for improved health to an undernourished child.

Six meals are made from one packet by adding boiling water. Simple, nutritious and delicious.

DC Ranch team members participated in a Manna Pack session in February at the FMSC location in Mesa. After a brief orientation, they worked in teams to scoop and pack the meals.

Science Matters in America is partnering with DC Ranch to offer four one-day science classes in June covering a range of interesting topics that make learning about science fun.

June 2 – Totally Toyriffic Become a Toy Technician as you learn the science behind many popular playthings.

Explore science through the world of toys, such as the humming harmonica, gyroscopes, and tops.

June 9 – Kitchen Chemistry Learn about the genetics of taste and make things sweet and salty during this cooking exploration. Discover the secrets of soda pop and make the best butter you’ve ever tasted.

Note: kids will be working with dairy and wheat during this session.

June 16 – Under the Sea Explore the

oceans, from the sea shore down to the deep. Make your own ocean aquarium craft, learn about spectacular sea creatures, and help dissect a real squid. The treasures of the sea await!

What to do when leaving your Arizona home for the summer

Performing a few basic preventative measures can reduce the likelihood of unforeseen events while you are away.

For example, a worn out washing machine hose or a water heater leak can result in serious water damage to your home. Here are a few reminders for you to consider before departure: INTERNAL HOME CHECKLIST • Shut off the main water line to your home. If your landscape irrigation is affected by this, then leave the main water on and shut off water at each toilet and sink.

This is a great opportunity to inspect for any leaks.

• Shut off hot and cold water to your washing machine. Washing machine hoses over ten years old should be replaced.

• Turn off the ice maker in your refrigerator.

Remove all perishables from pantry and refrigerator.

• Unplug hot water re-circulators and water softeners.

• Unplug any unnecessary appliances and electronics to protect against power surges and lightning strikes.

• Set your water heater to vacation or off.

• Set your A/C system between 85 to 90 degrees depending on your home.

• If there is no humidifier in your home climate system, place buckets of water in sinks and bathtubs to prevent excessively dry air in your home.

• Check that your outdoor lights are functioning and replace with LED as a utility saver.

• For vehicles, attach trickle chargers to their batteries and raise tire pressure to reduce flat spots.

• Create a home inventory to keep track of your important possessions and help verify loss for insurance and taxes. Take your valuables with you or put them in a safe deposit box.

• Replace fire/smoke alarm batteries.

• Check with your insurance agent regarding your homeowner’s policy and extended absences.

ay and June are some of the most trying times for our Valley gardens and landscapes. Temperatures are on the rise, but the moisture from the monsoon season is still another month away. As a result, more plants die in this season that in any other.

The secret to getting your plants through this season is managing their water. There are two parts to this strategy: altering the watering schedule and using mulches.

As we head into warmer weather, be certain to increase the frequency of watering but not the amount you water each time. In other words, water for the same

amount of time that you were watering in the spring, but water more often.

At the same time, check the soil around your plants to make sure they are not getting too much water. Garden plants should always be kept at least slightly moist, but desert-adapted trees and shrubs should be allowed to dry on the surface of the soil between each watering.

The second strategy is to use mulches. In the landscape this usually means gravel; in the vegetable or flower garden I recommend quarter-inch bark chip. In both cases, mulch shades soils from the hot sun, so that the soil and the plant roots are cooler. In addition, mulch slows down evaporation—even two inches of mulch will block water’s path out of the soil, keeping the roots happy and healthy.

iking is a favorite pet-friendly activity providing great exercise for both humans and animals. Here are a few facts to keep you and your four-legged pal happy on the trail.

Hikers should use common sense in their preparations for a desert hike:

• hydrate the night before the hike • take plenty of water and head back to the trailhead when it is halfway consumed • wear good boots and a broad brimmed hat • take and use sunscreen (SPF 30+, re-apply every two hours) • include snacks in the pack • let someone know where you will be hiking

Safety for hikers and their furry friends Symptoms of heatstroke include headache, nausea, dizziness, clammy skin. Seek shade, rest, and drink sips, not gulps, of water. Put a wet cloth on the back of the neck and under arms. Loosen clothing and squirt water on the head, too.

Watch for bees swarming in trees or in a hole in the ground. Wear light-colored clothing and avoid perfumes. Avoid carrying high sugar snacks or soda. If you encounter bees, do not swat at them.

Walk quickly or run away. Cover your face with netting or a bandana. Seek shelter or the darkness of shade to confuse the bees.

Look ahead for snakes, especially before stepping over or around rocks. If you are bitten, stay calm and still and call 911. Wash the area gently with

water (soap, too, if available). Immobilize the extremity and remove watches or rings that might constrict swelling. Keep the bite area below the heart and seek treatment.

Dogs need water to maintain hydration and critical bodily functions, just like their owners.

A good rule is to take a pint of water for your dog, and offer water at least every hour, irrespective of air temperature. Dogs attempt to regulate their body temperature through panting. That panting is natural but should also be seen as a sign that the animal requires rest, hydration and shade. Individual dog breeds differ as to heat tolerance. In general, is if it is over 90 degrees at anytime in your hike, it's too hot for a dog. When temperatures at ground level are over 100 degrees, all dogs are at risk. Extensive exposure to hot soil underfoot may injure a dog’s footpads.

In hot weather, dogs fare better, as do their owners, when they walk outdoors at dawn or dusk when the air and landscape are cooling. Like people, dogs vary as to physical ability and endurance.

Considerate owners should be aware of their dog’s physical condition, endurance limits, and strength.

And finally, there’s the dog's second best friend, the leash or lead. Keeping a dog on a leash while hiking minimizes risks from snakes and cactus spines.
