Spring in your step Hello!—I couldn’t have picked a better season to join the Community Council team than springtime. From cheering on the Diamondbacks at spring training games, to hiking and biking through wildflowers in the McDowell Sonoran Preserve, spring is prime time to be outdoors in Scottsdale. As the Council’s new Executive Director, I look forward to meeting you, perhaps outdoors on a trail or at one of DC Ranch’s 20th anniversary events.

DC Ranch News is a not-for-profit newspaper published by the DC Ranch Community Council to promote the DC Ranch lifestyle. The publication strives to build community by connecting current and future residents along with DC Ranch stakeholders through interesting stories and pictures. Habitat at the Ranch is March 2 and 3. As part of the 20th anniversary celebration, I invite you to roll up your sleeves and show your community spirit in a way that will last for generations to come. The event is the first off-site project for the nonprofit Habitat for Humanity. DC Ranch residents will help erect the frame of a house in the parking lot of The Homestead Community Center. The frame will then be transported to its permanent location and become a family’s new home.

I’m looking forward to the Programs and Events Open House on March 7. Come learn about all the activities DC Ranch currently offers and give us input on what you’d like to see for programs in the future.

T

he DC Ranch Association election process for its Board of Directors is now underway. Residents are encouraged to apply. This year, four director seats will be open for election, as the two-year terms for President Susan Grace, Secretary Tom Headley, Treasurer Mike Esparza and Director Don Matheson expire. Candidate applications ask for prior volunteer, board or committee experience; civic involvement; education; and any professional designations. Residents should also plan to attend the Meet the Candidates Forum tentatively set for Wednesday, March 14, at 6 p.m. at The Homestead Community Center.

Board candidates must be DC Ranch residents and be in good-standing with community standards, assessments and fees. Applicants may download candidate forms online at DCRanch.com, or pick one up at The Ranch Offices on Market Street during regular business hours. If elected, board members will serve two-year terms.

In 2017, the Board addressed many important matters such as speed enforcement, drones, and policies to set standards for board conduct, ethics and governance. The Board also created a new Policy Committee to provide advice on all policyrelated matters.

Pet waste is a pet peeve

Pet and non-pet owners alike have voiced concerns about pet waste in the community. It effects every neighborhood, as well as the path and trail system that winds through DC Ranch. DC Ranch has tried various approaches to address this concern through the years. This month, a new program called PUP (Pick Up Poop) is being introduced where pet owners sign a pledge to dispose of waste properly. The pilot PUP program will be rolled-out first in Desert Parks Village (neighborhoods south of Legacy Boulevard). Residents who take the PUP pledge will receive a DC Ranch branded dog bandana, leash and waste bags to identify their promise to pick up waste. The entire community is being evaluated to determine where pet waste disposal stations are needed. Five additional stations have already been added along 94th and 91st Streets south of Legacy. Maintenance crews from the Ranch Association and both apartment complexes, (Desert Parks Vista and Camden Foothills) are also assisting with pet waste removal.

Landscape Workshop March 19

Ranch residents take pride in keeping the community looking its best. Education plays an important role and, as a part of the process, the Community Standards team will present a free seminar for residents and their landscape providers Monday, March 19, from 3 to 5 p.m. at The Homestead Community Center. The event will feature a presentation from Scottsdale Fire on creating a defensible space around your home. Additionally, the landscape modification process will be reviewed as well as the use of lighting,

desert pavement, chemical applications and water management. An in-depth look at the landscape modification submittal process will be reviewed as well as various design concepts such as use of artificial turf, desert pavement, granite applications and prohibited plants. In honor of DC Ranch’s 20th anniversary, residents who complete the training will receive a $200 credit on modification fees. Landscape providers who complete the course will be added to the DC Ranch certified Landscape Provider List posted on DCRanch.com and will receive a certificate of completion.

New NVMs welcomed The Ranch Association hosted a happy hour reception on Thursday, Jan. 18, to welcome 15 new Neighborhood Voting

Members who will serve their respective communities. Incoming and incumbent NVMs gathered at Market Street Kitchen for a chance to mix, mingle and learn the ropes. Training for new NVMs preceded the event. A record number of NVMs attended the first Ranch board meeting of the year at which many important items were discussed, such as the use of fines for speed enforcement. The first item of business for NVMs is the Ranch Association Board of Directors election.

What programs interest you? Residents are invited to participate in a Programs

and Events Open House on March 7 from 4 to 7 p.m. at The Homestead Community Center. Staff will share information on the more than 45 programs currently offered and seek input on what residents would like to see for future programming. Feedback from the Open House will then be used to develop a survey to gauge interest Ranch-wide. Every year, the Community Council evaluates programming and makes several changes. The Open House and survey will influence 2019 programming. Come share your ideas!

Scottsdale Airport Management at the Scottsdale Airport has expressed interest in hearing from residents who encounter excessive noise from landings or take-offs from their airport. Residents should call Sarah Ferrara at 480.312.8482 with the date and time of the flight. Ferrara will then discuss with the pilot any procedural changes possible to mitigate noise.

A new leader for the Community Council The DC Ranch Community Council

board of directors welcomed Jenna Kohl as its Executive Director on February 22. Originally from the Chicago suburbs, Kohl spent the last eight years as CEO of the Community Council in Anthem, Arizona.

Anthem is a master planned community just north of Phoenix with more than 26,000 residents. During her tenure there, Kohl managed the acquisition and renovation of a 36,000-square foot building to serve as the Anthem civic building and facilitated creation of Anthem’s first master plan. She planned and implemented resident-driven community projects totaling more than $6 million dollars.

“DC Ranch is the premier community in Scottsdale.

I’m excited about the opportunity to join with residents, the board and staff in ensuring its successful future,” states Kohl.

Jenna Kohl Kohl’s responsibilities will include visioning and facilitating initiatives that enhance residents’ quality of life, serve collective interests and promote the DC Ranch brand. She will oversee a seasoned Community Council team that provides recreational, educational, cultural and philanthropic opportunities for residents; operates and provides programming for DC Ranch’s two community centers, the community garden, Market Street Park and the path and trails system. Kohl will also oversee DC Ranch’s finance and communications teams.

The Community Council engages in public policy advocacy to provide DC Ranch with early identification of matters that may positively or negatively impact the community. The Council’s goal is to be a positive and contributing member of the Scottsdale community-at-large that supports the city’s vitality while enhancing DC Ranch’s desirability. Get social with the DC Ranch Men’s Club

T

he DC Ranch Men’s Club is off to an exciting start in 2018.

This social club for men is an excellent way to meet your neighbors around the community who share common interests.

The club was founded in April 2017 with a mission to facilitate a social experience for neighbors and give them an opportunity to participate in various activities in the community through good work and endeavors.

“There are interesting men in our community from diverse backgrounds that add a lot of value to our lives,” said Steven Kressler, founder of DC Ranch’s Men’s Club.

Men are invited to participate in events, which are organized by members of the group in collaboration with the Community Council.

Past activities have included a pizza

party, Cardinals Monday Night Football viewing party, whiskey tasting, cigar outing, hikes, and regular Monday morning breakfast.

The club is currently looking to increase participation. Upcoming activities include: • Spring Training Game • Movie Night • Poker Night

The Men’s Club is also seeking volunteers to join the monthly steering committee meetings which are held the second Monday of the month.

Whether you have lived at DC Ranch for several years or are a new resident, this is great opportunity to become active in the community.

Happy Hikers combine physical activity with fun

he Happy Hikers Club consists of residents in the north Scottsdale area—many of whom are DC Ranch residents —that have found a way to mix physical activity with a good time.

The Happy Hikers meet every Sunday for some form of exercise—typically hiking or biking— followed by a delicious brunch for conversation and laughs.

The club was founded 14 years ago as a way for local residents to form new bonds and stay physically fit.

“I enjoy meeting up with friends and getting outdoors. It’s important to stay active and this beautiful Arizona weather allows us to do that. It’s really a lot of fun,” said Jeff Bleaman, a club member and DC Ranch resident.

Bleaman was born on the East coast and lived in California for several years before settling in Arizona 24 years ago. He’s been a DC Ranch resident since 2005 and enjoys the social interaction of the club.

The Happy Hikers take full advantage of Scottsdale’s terrain on their treks including hiking Marcus Landslide and Brown’s Ranch.

However, the group of friends have traveled near and far in search of adventure.

The Happy Hikers have taken trips to Tucson and Las Vegas, but the biggest trip was to Cuba two years ago. Five couples—ten Happy Hikers—spent ten days in Cuba experiencing the culture, food and beautiful vintage cars. However, the best part of the trip was the amazing people they met along the way.

“The people were all so nice. It was more of a social trip but we had such a great time together,” said Bleaman, an avid traveler and photographer.

The Happy Hikers Club focuses on activity and combines a social element to meet and interact with neighbors in the surrounding north Scottsdale community.

Growing the Community Garden

T

he DC Ranch Community Garden at Copper Ridge School has partnered with Agave Farms to provide a communal garden experience for residents. The Community Garden, located at Copper Ridge School, will be managed by Agave Farms and offer opportunities for residents to work together as “garden hands.”

“Our goal is to immerse residents in a true hands-on garden experience,” said Dan Nowell, affectionately known as ‘Farmer Dan.’ Rather than maintaining individual garden plots, residents will work together and share the harvest.

Residents will become a garden hand and volunteer for a minimum of two hours a month per household. Any excess produce will be donated to local food banks.

Not only will Nowell show residents how to grow, nurture, and harvest a garden, he will also bring in local experts for lectures on everything from bee keeping to seed science.

“We’re a steward to the seed and a steward to the soil and therefore we are sustainable,” said Nowell.

Residents can sign up to be part of a four-month gardening experience.

In the spring of 1998, DC Ranch had its first General Manager, Charley Freericks.

As the general manager, or “CEO of the Development,” Freericks was in charge of all aspects of the project for DMB, the developer of DC Ranch.

As the team grew and the project progressed, Freericks oversaw zoning and planning when the area was no more than dirt and bare land.

During that time, parks and roads were under construction, homes were being built and the community was beginning to look less and less like a cattle ranch.

“The area was really just a beautiful piece of land with a freeway coming soon. That’s all it was at the time.

There was nothing here 20 years ago,” said Freericks, “but the community has blossomed.”

The community is now a thriving mixed-use development that consists of two golf clubs (DC Ranch Country Club and Silverleaf), Market Street, Canyon Village and DC Ranch Crossing and many great neighborhoods.

“DC Ranch did not use the HOA structure that you see in other communities. Here you have a focus on lifestyle that includes events, programs, community engagement and communications channels like Ranch News. We designed it a new way but it was experimental— trial and error,” he said.

Although many communities have attempted to recreate the community management foundation, few have been able to duplicate the governance structure, aesthetics, or the feel that DC Ranch has cultivated.

“DC Ranch became the standard or the DNA of other great communities DMB created in the West. The community is how we envisioned it physically,” said Freericks. “But as

Freericks used the word thoughtful to describe the planning that went into every detail of DC Ranch.

When asked about his fondest memories of DC Ranch, Freericks said it’s the people he remembers the most.
