The DC Ranch Community Council facilitates a connected and welcoming community that instills pride and a sense of belonging in each DC Ranch resident.

One of the goals I have for the DC Ranch Community Council team–the people who manage the Ranch’s finances, operate our community centers, plan all our fabulous activities and produce this publication–is to experience the joy and fulfillment that comes from serving others.

A goal I am hopeful residents will help us achieve is to identify and develop initiatives that will rally the power of the DC Ranch community to benefit a cause they are passionate about. Many residents, like Les Seldin–who you will read about in this month’s cover story–have inspired the Community Council team with their passion for actively giving back to those in need. But imagine how much larger an impact could be made if the majority of DC Ranch residents were involved in a single altruistic effort.

Community Updates Get ready for the Run for Ryan House in March Looking for a New Year’s resolution? Start training for the 12th annual Run for Ryan House, which will take runners through DC Ranch on Sunday, March 13. This family-friendly event has a level for everyone: a 1-mile Family Fun Run, 5K, 10K or Half Marathon. Organize a fundraising team to help support Ryan House’s mission of providing respite and palliative care for children with life-threatening illnesses.

DC Ranch employees donate to local children Community Council, Ranch Association and Covenant Commission team members joined for a day of camaraderie and team building in late October. Nearly 30 employees participated in the workshop that centered on knowledge about DC Ranch. The group capped off the event by competing with each other to build children’s bikes that were donated to a local charity along with matching safety helmets.

If you have not already attended a Community-Wide Standards (CWS) presentation, there are two final meetings scheduled in January. Each DC Ranch neighborhood has landscape and exterior home standards. It is important that all residents attend one meeting to learn about the guidelines. There will be home improvement gift card drawings as a “thank you” to those who attend.

The Homestead Playhouse debuts

‘The JunGirl Book’ ourage. Loyalty. Persistence. Belonging. Even though it’s been more than 120 years since Rudyard Kipling first published “The Jungle Book” stories, the timeless themes continue to resonate for audiences young and old.

The Homestead Playhouse will kick off its 10th anniversary year with the debut of “The JunGirl Book,” an original adaptation that puts a female twist on Kipling’s beloved tale of humans’ relationship to the natural world. The play was written especially for The Homestead Playhouse by Anne Negri, an award-winning writer of several plays for young

A story for all ages When a young girl is separated from her family in the jungle, the Free Creatures–a wolf family, a bear, and a black panther–come together to protect her and teach her to survive. The girl's adventures take her from the wolf pack to the land of monkeys, narrowly escaping the jaws of a powerful python and a vengeful tiger. The girl must learn to use her jungle skills as well as her human instincts to outsmart the tiger and discover her true place in the world.

Youth Art Workshop at The Homestead Carrie Curran Art Studios will help young DC Ranch artists “Paint Like the Masters” during a two-day art workshop on Tuesday and Thursday, Jan. 19 and 21 at The Homestead Community Center from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Students ages 6-14 will study Van Gogh’s landscapes–the vibrant wheat field and farmhouse pieces created during his time in France. They will explore his methods, work on drawing concepts, and move on to painting a masterpiece acrylic painting. Registration is $40 per child. See DCRanch.com for details.

here are many reasons why DC Ranch residents Les and Connie Seldin volunteer.

Perhaps the biggest motivator is commitment.

“My father always taught me the importance of giving back to the community in which you live,” said Les Seldin.

“It’s one of the best ways to feel like you’re a part of that world. Donating your time and actively participating make you invested in the place you call home.”

As Manhattan dentists, the Seldins, now retired, saw first-hand how aging affected their patients’ lives.

Foothills Caring Corps helps older adults live independently by providing basic services such as transportation to doctor’s appointments or the grocery store and delivering hot meals to neighbors in their homes. It also arranges social activities like lunch gatherings or in-home visits.

“Having treated people for over 40 years, I really saw how their lifestyle changed as they got older,” said Seldin.

“It is frustrating to not be able to do what you once could, and I realized that this could be me someday.”

After moving full time to Arizona, Les and Connie committed themselves to helping at organizations focused on elder care. Connie volunteers at Hospice of the Valley and Les was recently elected to the Board of Directors at Foothills Caring Corps.

“The Caring Corps is a tremendous organization that serves our elderly neighbors in north Scottsdale, Carefree and Cave Creek. Surprisingly, not many DC Ranch residents know about it,” said Seldin.

A

ncient artwork is scattered throughout the Preserve and, as with all beautiful old art pieces, we want to understand the messages the artists communicated through their work. These ancient people pursued a universal activity–the desire to tell their story through art and to make their place on earth known and understood.

While much remains to understand about the meanings of different forms of rock art, it’s generally agreed that their protection and preservation for current and future generations is essential. This is a guiding principle behind the Field Institute’s Pastfinder program and the City of Scottsdale’s Cultural Resources Master Plan. Working together with other stakeholders, including the Arizona

Rock Art Coalition, Arizona State Parks, the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community and the Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation, the goal is to promote the protection and interpretation of identified cultural resources.

Theories about the function of rock art include: • Signs, boundaries, travel maps • Language/expression, storytelling • Ceremonial, religious/sacred images • Good luck omens, clan symbols • Hunting scenes depicting animals and people • Astronomical–relating to the moon, sun and stars • Solstice or equinox markings for seasonal/ calendar records • Coming-of-age ceremonies • Artistic expressions So far, about 75 percent of the Preserve has been surveyed by archeologists for cultural resources, with 76 sites formally documented and perhaps 333 more sites identified. MSC, the City and other entities will continue to promote an ethic of conservation archeology and education. Stay tuned for possible opportunities to work with experts in these areas.

Archeology etiquette in the Preserve When visiting cultural sites, minimum-impact techniques are a requirement, as these are fragile and irreplaceable resources.

The City of Scottsdale’s website offers these guidelines: • Enjoy rock art by viewing, sketching, or photographing only.

• NEVER chalk, trace or otherwise touch rock art. Any kind of direct contact causes these ancient forms to disintegrate. Oils from even clean hands can cause damage and deterioration.

• Creating “modern” rock art is called vandalism and is punishable by law.

• Cultural sites are places of ancestral, even sacred, importance to Native Peoples and should be treated with the utmost respect.

They moved to DC Ranch in July, trading urban life in downtown Houston for the desert vistas in Scottsdale and finding a great fit for their family in Desert Camp Village.

Making a life in DC Ranch

Anyone who has kids knows that “coach–mentor–teacher–cheerleader” is a big part of the job description. The Haneys took that up a notch. Back in Texas, they decided to homeschool their children for three years when Alex was in 3rd-5th grade. Not feeling the need to be tied down, Jodie would load all three kids into a minivan and set off on monthlong adventures around the U.S. and Canada, doing “book work” in the morning and hands-on experiences in the afternoon.

“It was like running a one room schoolhouse,” said Jodie. “They all studied similar things at different levels and then really got to see and do what we were talking about: exploring the ecosystems, history and people living in the Blue Ridge Mountains, Florida

Everglades, and Alaska, for example.” A trip to the Grand Canyon was one of their favorites, made even more fun because Don was able to join them. Little did they know that a couple years later Arizona would be their new home base.

Putting down roots Like many residents, the lure was a new job: Don joined the CVS corporate team in an operations role encompassing forecasting, resource planning, and technology improvements. His background includes an engineering degree, a Duke MBA, management consulting, and M&A/operations in the oil and gas industry. His work in leadership training allows him

Happily, the transition to Scottsdale has been a smooth one.

All three children go to Copper Ridge and are happy to be in one school together (at least for one year!) They think it’s fun to have neighbors who go to the same school and are enjoying the full range of options–clubs, sports, STEM activities–available at Copper Ridge.

One of the family’s favorite things is the neighborhood get-togethers in the park or in front of the house, with friends stopping by and lots of kids running around. Sounds like a great place to call home.

While participants don’t “sweat,” they do generate body heat.
