Summer is prime time to beat the Valley heat and head off on new travel adventures. I love hearing residents’ travel stories because of their variety and exploratory nature.

One thing is for sure: DC Ranch is an adventurous community.

From safaris in Africa to snorkeling “Down Under,” it never ceases to amaze me how people spend their vacation time. And it’s always great to hear, first hand, the insights and recommendations for travelling to a particular destination. In this month’s cover story, we highlight some residents’ travel stories with a few “takeaways” in case you’re interested in going there as well.

As summer winds down, we are excited to announce some new arts and education programs for adults and children happening this fall. The new offerings will engage residents in the culinary, visual, and theatre arts, and education. You can read more about the exciting new programs on page 9.

Security service satisfaction survey

Ranch Association management change Dear Residents, I regret to inform you that Andy Andrews, who has served as executive director of the DC Ranch Association for the past five years, will be leaving us following the Aug. 9 board meeting. Andy will be relocating to Connecticut, where he Andy Andrews will be general manager of a private golf community.

Andy has made an outstanding contribution to DC Ranch, and he will be missed by residents and staff alike, especially those of us who had the opportunity to work with him on a daily basis. Please join me in wishing him all the best in his new position.

The Ranch Association has formed a search committee to find Andy’s replacement. Although we’ve already begun our work, this is a process that shouldn’t be rushed and could take a number of months to complete. Our objective is to recruit a multitalented individual whose skill set matches up seamlessly with the needs and expectations of our very special community.

The Ranch Association has chosen not to select an interim executive director and has instead asked staff to report to Susan Grace, my fellow board member and the Association’s vice president. Phase I complete for DCRanch.com redesign Have you visited DCRanch.com lately?

The website is being redesigned to make it easier for residents to find the information and resources they’re looking for. Phase I of the project included a redesign of the homepage to streamline the various navigation options. There is a new Standards and Guidelines section that houses all of the resources pertaining to DC Ranch Standards. Also, the new Contact Us section allows residents to find phone numbers to get in touch with key DC Ranch team members quickly.

DC Ranch staff is now working on Phase II, which will include a complete overhaul and redesign of the website.

The school serves a diverse population, many of whom come from low-income families.

One big change is a new principal, Lindsay Stollar Slover, who was previously the assistant principal at Cordova Middle School in the Alhambra Elementary School District in Phoenix.

An English teacher in the Valley for 10 years, she taught 7th-10th graders in honors and regular classes, as well as ESL, reading intervention, and college composition.

She replaces Dr. Michele Otstot, who has a new role in the Paradise Valley School District as Director of Human Resources.

Ms. Stollar Slover is eager to connect with the 1,100+ students in grades PK-8 and their families. “My focus is on helping students be ready for high school and college,” she said. “That path starts early, with pre-K, and involves building strong foundations in skills and attitude.”

Aware that children have many different learning styles, Stollar Slover’s goal is to ensure teachers have the tools they need to work with students and parents. “It’s important that we align the curriculum, always looking across grade levels to assess requirements and readiness. Parents can trust that their children will get what they need and receive a high-quality, cohesive education at Copper Ridge School,” she noted.

Copper Ridge earned the prestigious A+ School of Excellence award from the Arizona Educational Foundation in May. Ms. Stollar Stover plans to build on the school’s many strengths and help take the program to the next level.

Expanded arts and education programming coming this year

T

he DC Ranch Community Council is embarking on a significant expansion of its arts and education programming, beginning this fall. According to Lindsay Vanegas, the Community Council’s Arts and Education Coordinator, “It’s all about more: more opportunities for more people of different ages, abilities, and interests to engage in the arts and learn new things.”

In keeping with the community value of lifelong learning, the Lindsay Vanegas new classes, workshops, and camps are designed to spark the imagination of residents, providing opportunities for children, adults and families to pursue a variety of activities.

Here is a sneak peek of the types of offerings coming in the next year: “You can’t use up creativity.

The more you use, the more you have.”

Theatre arts In addition to The Homestead Playhouse’s spring production, youth workshops on dance, theatrical movement and show tunes are being explored.

Visual arts The focus is on local artists, with opportunities for both hands-on creativity and artistic conversations.

Passport to Art offers lecture-based presentations in November and February, while a new program, Creative Art Workshops, gives residents a chance to roll up their sleeves and make their own art in September and April. Creative workshops on paper crafts and mixed media will let children and adults channel their inner artists.

DC Ranch ‘Beat the Heat’ water drive was a huge success DC Ranch collected 3,030 bottles of water for the City of Scottsdale’s Beat the Heat drive, more than 45% of the total 6,600 water bottles donated this year. Many thanks to everyone who made donations, especially The Thumb for donating 960 bottles and Camden Foothills for donating 480 bottles of water. All water bottle donations went to low income and homebound seniors in Scottsdale. The support was greatly appreciated by the city of Scottsdale.

DC Ranch signs get a facelift

T

he directional signage posted throughout the community has an updated look. All of the signs are refurbished with the trademark DC Ranch logo and fresh paint to help visitors and residents find their way to points of interest and community amenities.

A total of 36 signs direct traffic to the five manned gates, two community centers, three commercial hubs, two country clubs, administration offices, school, and community garden.

The addition of the DC Ranch insignia on the signs is part of a larger branding campaign currently underway.

t is no surprise that many DC Ranch residents flee the Valley of the Sun each summer in search of cooler climates and a change of scenery. Some residents take their travels to the next level with inspiring vacations to far off locales to broaden their understanding of the world. And when they return to the Ranch, it’s always a treat to hear about their adventures and maybe learn a few tips along the way.

Residents share insights from extraordinary summer travels

“Seeing how the animals live in the desert environment was very different from other safari experiences in Africa,” said Covici. “In the Namib Desert the animals must survive on the scruff of arid plants and trees and must work harder to find food.”

Unexpected surprise While Bleaman and Covici both attended photography workshops in exotic locales in the past, they were struck by the diversity of Namibia’s landscape.

Photography workshop in Africa Jeff Bleaman and fellow DC Ranch resident Ed Covici took the ultimate “guys” trip: a two-week photography workshop in Namibia, a country in southwest Africa distinguished by the Namib Desert along the Atlantic Ocean coast.

“I am very interested in photography and Namibia is known around the world for its incredibly diverse landscape,” said Bleaman. “The great sand dunes

“Namibia is home to one of the world’s largest canyons, which was a great surprise,” said Bleaman.

“Also, there are flamingos everywhere along the coast. That isn’t something you expect to find in a desert nation.”

“My husband, Mark, has his SCUBA certification and my daughter, Rachel, is just one dive away,” said Chulew. “So diving in the reef was a dream come true for them. My other daughter, Dena, and I snorkeled, which was also amazing.”

Unexpected surprise The people of “Oz” truly are warm and welcoming.

“We got stuck in a cable car during a rainforest tour and the employees went above and beyond to accommodate us,” said Chulew. “People in Australia have a very warm and friendly way of living.”

I would definitely recommend going for at least two weeks,” said Chulew. “Also, even though Sydney is a beautiful, world-class city, I would focus on getting out of the urban areas and seeing the coastline.”

Snorkeling down under Stacey Chulew and her family spent seven days exploring the east coast of Australia. After seeing the big city sights of Sydney and Melbourne, they traveled to Queensland and the Great Barrier Reef.

Sonoran superstars: Palo Verde and Ironwood trees

W

hen most people hear the word “tree,” an image of a tall plant with one or two main trunks comes to mind. Desert trees, however, are often short and have many trunks, appearing more like bushes than trees. Even though they are small, trees are what make the Sonoran Desert unique among deserts and why this desert is called the “tree desert.”

Desert trees grow slowly and may be older than their height suggests. Their dense branches are self-shading, protecting the tree in the summer. The branch pattern also keeps warm air within the canopy on cold winter nights. Desert trees have very long roots allowing them to thrive on the deep soil of the bajada.

Two species—palo verde and ironwood trees—are keystone species because they play a critical role in the habitat, interacting with birds, mammals, insects, and other plants in the bajada.

The desert ironwood tree, which lives almost exclusively in the Sonoran Desert, can grow to a height of 35 feet but is often short and shrubby. They grow very slowly —the growth rings in their trunks are barely measurable— and may not appear to be as long-lived as they are. Many ironwoods can survive for 180300 years, and some reach 600 years of age. That means that an old ironwood could have sprouted the year Columbus arrived in the New World.

The most common tree in the McDowell Sonoran Preserve is the foothills palo verde, which acts as a “nurse plant” providing cover for other plants, and for animals as well. The green bark of the foothills palo verde is a special adaptation.

Plants produce food via photosynthesis, using the green pigment called chlorophyll, which is usually found in leaves. Palo verde trees have evolved extremely small leaves, thus reducing water loss. They also have chlorophyll in their bark, resulting in their distinctive green coloration. The bark, however, must be thin enough for light to penetrate. This leaves them vulnerable to fires, unlike other desert trees that have thick, protective bark.

Produced by DC Ranch, the 30- and 70-mile rides raise funds for the McDowell Sonoran Conservancy, whose 500+ volunteers provide educational, scientific, and interpretive support for Scottsdale’s 30,000-acre McDowell Sonoran Preserve. This year the Conservancy is celebrating its 25th anniversary of sharing information about the Preserve with locals and visitors.

Training for the Tour The Tour comes early in the cycling season. Even though it’s still blistering hot in August, it’s time to get back into a training regime with early morning or evening rides. Group rides are held at many local bike shops—they are happy to help novice riders get up to speed and give veterans a chance to work on pace and endurance. Here are some tips for getting back onto the saddle:

Get used to the heat gradually. Make sure you are acclimated to the temperature before you go too far, too fast. Take it easy for a while, gradually increasing intensity and distance.

Hydration is critical. Drink before you bike, and eat high water content foods.

Sunscreen—always—and plenty of it, but avoid oil-based formulas that make it harder to sweat. Choose light clothing, including arm skins, made from materials that offer sun protection and help wick away moisture.

There are lots of 10-week training guides available on the Internet. Do some research and find one that fits your current fitness level, available training time, and riding goals. Stick with it!

Find ways to fit training into your busy life.

Take brisk walks or cycle near work at lunch, take the stairs—find a steep set in a shopping area or office block and climb them 3-5 times—and do stretches and mobility exercises on warmed up muscles.

Find a workout buddy—it’s always more fun to train with a friend.

Train in the gear you will eventually use during the Tour. Make sure you feel comfortable with your clothing, shoes, pedals, electronics, and hydration set-up.

After your ride, focus on rehydrating, refueling, and repairing. Develop a recovery routine that restores water, electrolytes, carbs, and protein to your system.

“When you enter the rink, you’ve got it all: fitness, competition, camaraderie. You all share in the excitement to be able to play this great game,” Scrappy stated.

A former Ohio State hockey club team player and long-time adult league skater, he took it up a notch this spring by deciding to play in a European tournament that spanned 10 games in nine days and took him to three countries—the Netherlands, Germany, and the Czech Republic. He’d be the first to say: “not bad for a 63-yearold guy!”

The European teams in the tournament play together regularly —and competitively. The U.S. delegation, ranging in age from 23 to 63, had minimal time to train and develop a team strategy.

“Our opponents played fast and hard— they were inspiring to watch. Our teams

They logged a 1-8-1 record, pulling through a win in the last 20 seconds of the game against the Czech team. “You would have thought we won the Stanley Cup!” The high point of the trip came when Scrappy’s team took the ice against a Russian team. “There was so much energy in the rink and the on-ice competition was spirited. Like we were back in the 1980 Olympics!” said Scrappy.

Scrappy moved to DC Ranch 11 years ago. He loves the community feel and enjoys walking through Market Street to pick up groceries, get a bite to eat, or listen to music. You may also have seen him on the pickleball courts—he’s a big fan and was instrumental in bringing it to DC Ranch.

Following a 35-year career in sales and new business development, including the last 17 years with Mars, Inc., Scrappy now works as a business development consultant for a national commercial construction company.

He summed up his trip: “Overall, I was so grateful for the opportunity to play with a great group of guys, against such good European players, and to enjoy the camaraderie of people who love the game.”

At the end of the trip, Scrappy and many of his teammates donated their gear to help build local Czech hockey programs.
