New breweries and beer pubs are popping up left and right in Arizona.

Here, we showcase what’s best and what’s coming next near you.

It’s standard now for bars and restaurants to offer wider craft-beer selections, and establishments with “barley,” “hops,” “grain” and other beer-related words continue to open.

Craft beer has gone from something that was once esoteric to a widespread phenomenon. And before this trend even hit, Arizona consistently maintained one of the largest memberships in the country with its homebrewer organization, the Arizona Society of Homebrewers.

There are now more than 100 breweries across the state, up from about 30 just a few years ago.

Downtown Scottsdale, home to many flashy nightclubs and luxe lounges, now has several breweries and a steadily growing number of beer pubs.

Here we share some of our favorites, and list some anticipated new spots to look forward to.

Newly opened Loco Patron Mexican Brewery: The Mexican restaurant and bar, which has locations in Tempe and Scottsdale, opened a brewery in north Scottsdale in January. Loco Patron Mexican Brewery & Kitchen currently has 24 rotating guest taps and will soon produce its own Mexican-style beers, which will include a lager and IPA. Guests can find the full tap list on the Tap Hunter app, and the brewery also has a food menu. The large patio features a variety of lawn games.

Mother Road Brewing Husband-and-wife team Michael and Alissa Marquess operate this Flagstaff brewery, which got its name from the “Grapes of Wrath” and the moniker given to Route 66. The beer list includes Gold Road Kölsch-Style Ale, Painted Desert strong bitter, Lost Highway black IPA and Roadside American Ale. Dragoon Brewing Co. Father-and-son team Bruce and Eric Greene share a deep passion for craft beer, and they joined forces with Tristan White to open Dragoon in April 2012 as a self-distributing brewery with only two beers on tap: Dragoon IPA and Stronghold Session Ale. The brewery has grown quite a bit over the years, putting out carefully crafted beers such as the Saison Blue Southwest farmhouse ale and Scout Poter, a mesquite-smoked porter. MCSO: Driver in fatal crash was speeding, using phone Nathan J. Fish

The 27-year-old driver in a fatal crash that killed four pedestrians in Fountain Hills was looking down, speeding and using his phone seconds before the collision, the Maricopa County Sheriff ’s Office said Wednesday.

Alex Bashaw has been charged with four counts Alex of manslaughter in the Bashaw March 13 collision and will be extradited from his home in Ohio to Phoenix to face the charges, MCSO said.

At about 9:12 a.m. on March 13, Bashaw was driving a 1998 Ford Explorer SUV north on Saguaro Boulevard near Palisades Boulevard in Fountain Hills, said Sgt. Joaquin Enriquez, a Sheriff ’s Office spokesman.

Investigators determined he was traveling at about 53 mph in a 35-mph

zone, Enriquez said in a statement released by MCSO. The SUV hopped a curb, striking pedestrians who legally were walking west in the intersection’s south crosswalk near Saguaro and Palisades boulevards, officials said.

Three of the pedestrians died at the scene. They were identified as 60-yearold Patti Doornbos of Calgary, Canada, and 72-year-old Robert Bonta and 71year-old Karen Bonta, both of Iowa.

Doornbos’ husband, 60-year-old Ronald Doornbos, also of Calgary, was initially the crash’s only surviving victim. He was in intensive care in a Phoenix-area hospital before being taken to a Canadian hospital in a medically induced coma, where he died of severe head and internal injuries in June.

The Arizona Republic has requested the full report on the crash from MCSO, but it has not yet been provided.

A former MMA fighter who pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting an unconscious woman in Scottsdale in 2016 has been sentenced to seven years in prison.

Maricopa County prosecutors say 29-year-old Rodolfo Andres Ramirez also was sentenced Tuesday to lifetime probation.

Ramirez was accused of kidnapping an intoxicated 22-year-old woman after she left a Scottsdale bar in September 2016.

he “looked down while driving and did not know why he drove off the road,” Enriquez said.

After the vehicle hit the curb, Bashaw told deputies, he saw the people on the sidewalk and he steered to avoid them, Enriquez said.

Bashaw told deputies he was not using his cellphone at the time of the collision, saying it was in a cradle, in handsfree mode. However, investigators determined he was “involved with his cellphone within seconds” of the first pedestrian being hit, Enriquez said.

A search warrant showed a 55-second call placed on Bashaw’s phone at 9:11 a.m., less than a minute before the collision, Enriquez said.

A local business’s security camera captured the collision and showed the traffic signals for Saguaro Boulevard change to red about 12 seconds prior to the first strike, Enriquez said.

Investigators believe Bashaw was traveling at a minimum of 41 mph when

video shows Ramirez carrying the woman over his shoulder to a parking garage.

Police say Ramirez then sexually assaulted Rodolfo the woman in public.

Ramirez Ramirez originally pleaded not guilty to charges of kidnapping, sexual assault and sexual abuse.

Last month at a change of plea hearing, Ramirez pleaded guilty to charges of sexual assault and attempted sexual assault.

he struck the first pedestrians, who were about 40 feet beyond the stop marking at the intersection, Enriquez said.

At that speed, investigators believe Bashaw would not have been able to stop for the red light, Enriquez said.

Investigators believe Bashaw’s driving behavior was reckless based on various conditions that included: the unreasonable and imprudent speed of the vehicle, the failure to stay in the traffic lane, the failure to stop for a red traffic signal and the pedestrians’ right of way at a crosswalk, Enriquez said.

Bashaw remained at the scene after the crash and even jumped out of his vehicle, running over to begin CPR on two of the pedestrians until fire personnel directed him to stop, Enriquez said.

Bashaw was examined at the scene and it was determined that he was not impaired, Enriquez said.

Enriquez added that Bashaw has a history of drug use. Maricopa County court records show two previous cases, in 2012 and 2013, involving drug-related offenses to which he pleaded guilty.

Bashaw is expected to be extradited within the next three weeks.

Scottsdale had good leadership and common sense from Day 1 Paul R. Messinger

Seeing the signs around town posted by folks running for City Council reminds me that Scottsdale has had some great and interesting city leadership since Day 1. Malcolm White, our first mayor, opposed incorporation in 1951 when the issue was put before the citizens.

When the citizens approved it, it was up to the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors to appoint the town’s first council. They appointed White, along with Bill Miller, a farmer; Mort Kimsey, manager of CALAPCO (now APS); Jack Sweeney, a businessman; and blacksmith E.G. “Scotty” Scott.

Miller resigned a month later, and the council appointed George “Doc” Cavalliere to fill the seat.

Ten months later, the council expanded from five to seven members.

They appointed John Shoeman and V.D. “Jim” Frederick to fill the other two seats.

The council’s first contract was with Lou Witzeman for fire protection of Scottsdale’s less than one square mile of town structures. He owned the Rural Metro Fire Service. The council paid Rural Metro $4,260 to start.

For the first council meeting, Witzeman moved his fire truck out of his single-bay firehouse at Second Street and Brown Ave. A dais, two folding tables and chairs for the council and city staff were put in the west end, and folding chairs were set up in the rest of the fireengine bay for those attending the meeting.

Council members selected White to serve as mayor. Hurley Pruitt was selected as the first town marshal in September 1951 and Vergie Lutes became our first town clerk. Mayor White was also designated as the fire chief.

Things were pretty basic during those early days. If potholes needed to be filled in one of the few paved streets, the city called local farmers Bill Shrader Senior or Junior. They would loan the town their flatbed truck to go into Phoenix, get some asphalt and bring it out to

Early on, Scottsdale’s citizens and city government truly felt like an Old West community,so it’s not hard to understand why Scottsdale’s seal has a horse rearing on its hind feet on its logo.

The Little Red School House became our first real city hall. The Police Department was in the basement. Council meetings took place on the main floor, and that same area converted back into office space during the normal work day.

A council chamber, some offices and work areas were added as the city grew.

By the early 1960s, Scottsdale’s staff and our city’s growth exceeded what the Little Red School House could accommodate, so Scottsdale rented a two-story office building a block west of Scottsdale Road on Indian School until 1967, when Scottsdale built its current City Hall and our first permanent city library.

Independent senior living communities were started in 1972 and now are preferred by the retiring 76 million Baby Boomers who were born between 1946 and 1964.

Independent senior living properties do not provide health-care assistance unless provided by a third-party home health-care provider.

These communities provide housing to people 55 and older along with meals, recreation programs, transportation services, housekeeping/maintenance, security and community activities centers. There are over 250,000 units for independent senior living housing in the over 10,000 independent senior living companies in the United States.

Costs are between $2,500 and $4,000 per month but can exceed $10,000 per month, depending on the location. Communities that are located within walking distance to museums, restaurants and other desirable locations are more expensive.

These communities attract Baby Boomers because they are becoming more “lifestyle focused” rather than the old model of being just “health-care focused.”

These communities are more like resorts offering well-equipped gyms, pools and spas, laundry services, movie theaters, tennis courts, beauty salons, massage parlors and other active-retirement options. The new independent senior living communities feel more like a vacation than senior care, where you can focus on your hobbies and the things you love.

The Senior Housing & Care Investor Survey has reported an increased interest by Wall Street investors in independent senior living communities because of the demand of the growing number of retiring Baby Boomers.

What interests investors is the fact that independent senior living communities are highly unregulated, unlike nursing homes that are regulated by the federal government or assisted-living facilities that are regulated by the

states.

About 60 percent of independent senior living facilities are owned by investors, and they are usually more expensive. Independently owned or nonprofit independent senior living communities cost less and usually have less than a 10 percent profit margin.

Price is extremely important, because independent senior living communities are not eligible for Medicare, Medicaid or Arizona Long Term Care System financial help.

Here are 14 questions you should ask when choosing an independent living facility: 1 Who owns and manages the property?

2 How solvent is the company and what is the occupancy rate?

3 What are the average annual increases in rent?

4 What is covered by the fees?

5 Is there a contract, and what is needed if I am forced to move for extra health-care needs?

6 What are the policies concerning pets, children and overnight guests?

7 What are the age ranges of the residents?

8 What meals are provided and is there any choice of meal times, food menus or special dietary needs?

9 What security and emergency call systems are in place?

10 What activities are scheduled, and do the residents interact with the community?

11 What transportation is provided, and what is the cost for extra transportation needs?

12 What are the costs for laundry services, pet walking and extra services?

13 Are there units available for rent to family visitors?

14 Do you have letters of recommendation to review?

Before you spend a lot of money on a buy-in you should study the financials, understand the approval process, verify if it is an equity membership with extra fees, and know what is refundable if you should die.

Arizona’s commitment to America’s armed services is unmatched, even for those who serve their country out of uniform.

In Mesa and the greater Phoenix area, that means supporting the Boeing-supplied military fleet that keeps America’s men and women safe on the battlefield, in strategic operations and logistics support.

Around the state, that support can mean playing a critical role in the supply chains for one of the most advanced, next-generation military aircraft that the U.S. Air Force badly needs: the KC-46A Pegasus refueling tanker based on Boeing’s successful 767 commercial aircraft.

Tankers are the force multipliers of military aircraft, using their refueling capabilities to extend the range of America’s military jets, rotorcraft and transport aircraft. But America’s tanker fleet is sadly outdated.

The majority of the Air Force’s tanker fleet dates back to the Eisenhower administration.

Arizona suppliers have been working hard to bring the KC-46 on line and expect to begin delivering aircraft to the Air Force later this year.

Converting a commercial jet into a military-grade flying gas station, capable of refueling all manner of military aircraft in nearly all conditions, is not

simple. I saw this process firsthand on the international tanker program in Italy in 2005. Such conversions require complex airframe modifications, like those multiple KC-46 suppliers in Arizona now perform.

Boeing engineers were able to accomplish some pretty amazing firsttime achievements on the KC-46, like giving airmen the ability to refuel aircraft on two refueling systems during the same tanker flight in order to service multiple aircraft at the same time and refuel aircraft faster.

When paired with advanced defensive systems that allow this aircraft to operate in higher-threat environments than legacy tankers, the KC-46 extends the operational reach of the U.S. Air Force to every corner of the globe.

Before I joined the international tanker program, I helped build nearly every modern military aircraft, including Boeing’s tilt-rotor V-22, F/A-18 Super Hornet, F-15 Strike Eagle and the B-2.

Although each of these aircraft is a world leader, without the KC-46, their range and capabilities are limited.

Boeing expects to deliver the first KC-46 to McConnell Air Force Base in Kansas later this year. In the coming years, nearly 200 more will be operating from bases around the country.

We should take pride that a part of Arizona is in each one of them, keeping America’s men and women in uniform safe and flying with extended capabilities that only the KC-46 can supply.

It’s called Maui Pasta, but there is nothing remotely Hawaiian on the menu of this new Italian restaurant in Scottsdale.

However, chef/owner Patricia Inman and her friend and general manager, Debra Lynch, exude the spirit of “aloha.”

They moved to Scottsdale from Hawaii last August after the original Maui Pasta closed due to an electrical fire.

Located in the Shops at Gainey Ranch, in the same strip center as Wally’s American Gastropub, 4-month-old Maui Pasta is part sit-down restaurant with 40 seats, part takeout counter and part catering company.

“I’ve become the queen of bread,” said Inman, who took culinary classes in Italy while working toward a master’s degree in architecture, in between theory and design classes.

and love found again.

Inman and her late husband, Ron, began Maui Pasta in 2012, selling handmade pastas from their home in Maui.

The pastas were a hit. The couple moved their business from their driveway to a farmers market and, eventually, to a brick-and-mortar takeout place.

But nine months after opening their retail outlet, tragedy struck. Ron’s melanoma, which had been in remission, returned. Two months later, Ron died, leaving Inman alone.

As a volunteer at Maui Pasta while Ron was in hospice, Lynch turned out to be just the business partner Inman needed.

Finding love again Inman is not only a pasta maker, she also is a painter. She joined an online grief support group and donated a painting to a gala in Scottsdale to raise money for the group. The man who framed her painting, Stephen Hochhaus, was part of the grief group.

Their friendship turned into love. After months of back and forth trips between Maui and Scottsdale, they decided to marry.

Encouraged by Hochhaus, Inman and Lynch moved to Scottsdale last summer and began planning the opening of Maui Pasta.

I first wrote about watermelon cakes back in 2015. They weren’t just cakes colored red. The watermelon is the actual cake, liberally coated with cake frosting.

At the same time, another trend was emerging that quickly became the darling of wedding cakes, the Naked Cake.

Tiers of unfrosted cake overshadowed the traditional elaborately decorated layers of a wedding cake due largely to numerous postings on Pinterest.

I thought it was time to unite the two trends with a Naked Watermelon Cake.

The only icing you’ll use is in between the layers of watermelon and to keep the tiered fruit in place.

By the way, if you’re wondering if icing really sticks to watermelon, it does

Naked Watermelon Cake 1 seedless watermelon (medium size) 1 (8-ounce) container Cool Whip 1 (8-ounce) small container sour cream or Greek yogurt (plain or vanilla) 1 small package (3.56-ounce) Hershey’s White Chocolate or Vanilla Instant Pudding 1-2 pints blueberries, depending on the size of your cake 1-2 pints strawberries, depending on the size of your cake, sliced in half 6-7 kiwis, sliced thin Additional fruit, optional for garnish: grapes, peaches, raspberries, oranges Slice a small portion of the bottom of the watermelon and then stand it on a cutting board. Cut rind (both green and white) off entire watermelon. Slice watermelon into 3 (or more) discs about 2 inches thick.

indeed with an important tip, which I’ve included in the directions. You can use any fruit that’s sweet and in season.

For this summertime version, I’ve opted for strawberries, blueberries and kiwi, with grapes and peaches as garnish.

So head to the produce section and grab a nice seedless watermelon and go make a refreshing masterpiece! fect circles by placing the plate or pan on each slice and cut around the edges.

Place several layers of paper towels on a baking sheet and lay each round on the paper towel. Cover with more paper towels and refrigerate for several hours or overnight. (The liquid from the watermelon will drain into the towels, drying it out, which ensures that the icing will adhere to the watermelon.)

When ready to serve, mix together Cool Whip, sour cream or yogurt and two heaping tablespoons of instant pudding until mixture thickens, about 2 minutes. Place icing mixture in a piping bag. Place the large bottom round of the watermelon cake on a platter. Build your layers by spreading a small amount of icing in between each layer and pressing down.

Pipe icing around the tiers of the cake and press fruit into the icing. Garnish around the bottom layer with fruit.

Keep refrigerated until ready to serve.

Indoor paper playground helps kids beat the heat

Right now, it is way too hot to go down any sliding board that is not attached to a pool.

But playgrounds still have potential even on sizzling summer days.

If you ask caregivers or children, they will assure you that all playgrounds are not equal. Finding and enjoying the very finest involves three things: information, directions and understanding the playground rules. Our paper playground is no different!

Information: This summer, let’s judge a book by its cover — or, better yet, by the removable cover. Yes! Our “beat the heat” paper playground is all about designing our own book covers! But first, let’s learn how these add-ons became a vital part of today’s children’s book.

Covers were originally introduced as bland protective wrappers called dust jackets.

Author Henry Petroski pushed back on their usefulness by arguing that the jackets take up valuable space on a bookshelf.

But today’s covers are art pieces, much too lovely to ditch to save space.

An added plus is that they create anticipation, build background, generate interest and provide information.

One researcher noted that removable covers are posters for the books. Their job is to get the books into children’s hands.

To prove the point, try this: Walk into any bookstore or library. Notice the number of picture books that are frontfacing. This technique entices readers into opening the book. And one sure-fire way of knowing if the design works is when a child stops, looks and selects that book.

Directions: Here is the good news: Book covers are so much more than a selling gimmick. They can become a paper playground to increase children’s enjoyment and anticipation of the story with the added side effect of increased

comprehension.

But why should designers have all the fun? Let’s engage our children in making their own book covers.

Rules: Every playground has some basic ground rules. Here are a few to get your fun started.

1. Select a book for this project. Remove the cover and get ready to create a new version. Visit a library, bookstore or use your own books to examine cover designs. Here are some inspiring recommendations: ”The Wolf in the Snow” by Matthew Cordell demonstrates how to use the front and back space. This wrap-around cover shows two main characters facing one another on the front and the wolf ’s mother howling for her pup on the back.

“Joseph Had a Little Overcoat” by Simms Taback is an example of a unique art technique called die cut. The illustrator created actual holes on the cover to show Joseph in a tattered coat. Take off the cover and voila! Joseph patched the holes. This is an engaging technique that can add drama to your child’s design.

“Flora and the Flamingo” by local, award-winning illustrator Molly Idle is a grand example of how to use color in a book-cover design. Encourage your child to evaluate what color/shades best represent the storyline.

2. Examine award-winning covers for inspiration. Sassy Brit website has a monthly book-cover award. Who knows, maybe you will enter your child’s design next month! Caution: This site is not solely children’s books (alternative-read.com/our-book-coverawards/).

Heading for cover: On good scarves and bad scarves Our own bigots today are those who judge an entire people and their religion by the actions of a minority. That includes many Americans who believe freedom of religion applies only to Christians.

Across America, Muslim women wearing their traditional headscarves have been insulted, fired from jobs and denied service. Do you think that would happen to a nun in a habit? No way.

That’s why I approached a Muslim female medical staff member several years ago in Iowa who was helping with a blood drive. Noting the abuse that often goes with the wearing of hijabs, I offered an easy solution. I pointed to several Amish women wearing coverings — a kind of simple white bonnet. These are worn for the same reason as the Muslim scarves — for modesty, I told her.

Now, if Muslim women would just start wearing bonnets, I advised, they would instantly defuse any potential conflicts. If they did, National Public Radio commentator Juan Williams would not have been fired for mentioning people in

Women wearing hijabs are becoming common sights behind the counters in many stores. I always smile and say hello to a sweet young woman not much older that my granddaughters at a neighboring supermarket in Mesa.

So far, I haven’t heard any local horror stories dealing with rude rednecks verbally abusing Muslim women that is almost daily fare in the national news.

There are bigots and hate-mongers among all groups, races and religions. It is true that I think the scarier ones currently deal with Muslim extremists. At one time, the honor would have fallen to Christians and the Inquisition when many were burning Jews, witches, heretics and an assortment of indigenous peoples who refused to convert to the religion of forgiveness and love.

Muslim garb made him nervous when he flies. After all, who is going to be paranoid about a bunch of women in bonnets?

Do you think France would have banned bonnets in public schools? Uhuh. Do you think a woman would have sued Disneyland for ordering her to remove her Muslim head covering if she had been wearing a bonnet? Would complete strangers publicly harass women wearing bonnets? Think again.

It would be un-American to order a woman to take off her bonnet. That would be like telling someone they couldn’t eat apple pie or watch baseball.

Who would have the nerve to order Laura Ingalls Wilder off a plane because she had donned a bonnet?

Women covering their heads goes back to the Old Testament. For Christians, 1 Corinthians 11:5 states: “Every woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head, for that is one and the same as if her head were shaved.”

Christian women continued to wear

head coverings in public through the centuries up to the early 20th century, when it was argued in Western Europe and the United States that long hair was the only covering needed. Hats and scarves continued to be worn as fashion, but the original religious reason was forgotten.

In the U.S. it is the Mennonite, Amish, Brethren and Hutterite women who still wear head coverings for modesty, though I’ve read that thousands of women from house churches and other independent congregations have rediscovered this New Testament practice. Let’s just hope these newcomers don’t choose bad head coverings, but something wholesome like bonnets. And if these women choose to wear scarves, I hope they know the difference between bad Muslim scarves and good Christian scarves. I’m not quite sure what a good scarf is — maybe something in calico.

Man showed love for his neighbor during dark days Larry Fultz Guest columnist

It’s heartwarming to see one of the dark times in our nation’s history bring about a Golden Rule Moment.

It all began with an executive order signed in 1942 by President Franklin D. Roosevelt that removed some 120,000 people of Japanese descent living in the United States from their homes and placed them in internment camps. The justification was that there was danger of those of Japanese descent spying for the Japanese.

However, more than two-thirds of those interned were American citizens and half of them were children. None had ever shown disloyalty to the nation.

In some cases, family members were separated and put in different camps.

Most of these camps were located in the West, including some here in Arizona.

Jan. 2, 1945, officially ended the executive order. So, Feb. 19, 2019, marks the 76th anniversary of the Japanese internment during World War II. On Father’s Day, I read an older copy of Reader’s Digest that referenced that dark time in our country’s history.

Here’s where the Golden Rule Moment surrounding that story comes in.

It happened in California when a Japanese neighbor was taken to the camps near Casa Grande. The neighbor to the Japanese family owned a vineyard and grew grapes for the many wineries close by, as did the Japanese family.

Both had been close friends since moving to that area and both were successful growers. It was quite a blow to the Japanese family to leave their vineyards, fearing that all that had gone into their profitable enterprise would be lost.

But that was not to be.

Soon after the Japanese family had been removed from their farm, the American neighbor took it upon himself to preserve his neighbor’s vineyard so that when and if, for there were no guarantees, he returned it would be just as he left it.

Consequently, those three years that

his neighbor was interned, this man with his boys pruned, harvested and did whatever needed to be done on his neighbor’s farm to preserve and care for that vineyard along with his own.

It was double work for three years but, because of his love for his neighbor and his love of the Golden Rule, he persevered.

The story, as told by his son, recounts the many times during those years that he told his dad just to give it up because it was so much work. Yet his dad always told him that he would want his neighbor to do the same for him.

During that interim, he not only cared for the vineyard but he kept up the lawns, the gardens, and even painted the house and outbuildings. He wanted to be sure that they were in perfect condition, just as his neighbor had left them.

What his son didn’t know and was not revealed until the neighbor returned was that during those three years that he and his dad and siblings were caring for that neighbor’s vineyard, his father was careful to keep accurate records of everything that was harvested and sold during their absence, and deposited all the money into a savings account.

So when the family returned to their vineyard, it was as though they had never left.

One can only imagine the wonderful surprise awaiting them when that Japanese family returned to their home! The house was just as they left it. The vineyard was just as bountiful and fruitful.

There was money in the bank earning interest. The garden products had been canned and preserved. The lawn was cut, the house was painted and everything was found in perfect order — as it was when they left.

It almost sounds like a story out of a fairy tale. But it is indeed a true story shared by a son who recalled how his father modeled the Golden Rule during a very difficult time in our nation’s history.
