Anacapa Grille at Corte Bella: A gem within a jewel By PAT WHITNEY
Anacapa Grille
C
orte Bella Country Club, a gated, agerestricted (55-plus) tree-lined community with Spanish Mission architecture, stunning fountains, flowering courtyards, elegant archways and colorful mosaics, is known as “the jewel of the Northwest Valley.” Its neighborhood restaurant, Anacapa Grille, is designed to please the posh palettes of Corte Bella residents and the general public. Upscale yet comfortable. Casual yet intimate. The incredible views are what draw the crowds, says Dan Haywood, executive chef since the restaurant opened a decade ago. “There’s not many places in Phoenix that don’t open onto concrete,” he says. “Anacapa has a beautiful setting with unobstructed views of mountains to the north.” It’s no secret that Haywood’s repertoire of flavor explosions as well as his role as chef extraordinaire for banquets and special events are the real draw. Cuisine is American contemporary. Popular signature dinner entrees include pecan-crusted salmon, pan-seared sea scallops and a 4-ounce filet mignon. Or a choice of more casual Homestyle entrée of chicken parmesan or mom’s meat loaf. “Prices range between $13 and $28 for dinner,” Haywood adds. “A good value compared to Ruth’s Chris and other upscale restaurants. “That, good service and quality food made in house from scratch give patrons an eclectic choice of dining that has the feel of a country club—without the price,” says Haywood who frequently visits with dining guests.
Corte Bella Country Club’s Anacapa Grille has been serving the Northwest Valley for more than 10 years. Executive chef Dan Haywood offers diners fine cuisine at reasonable prices.
Themed events throughout the year give Haywood his best chance to showcase Corte Bella and his culinary skills—Mardi Gras, Easter, Mother’s Day and St. Patrick’s Day— as well as parties, cooking demonstrations for residents, corporate meetings, banquets and weddings. Anacapa’s ballroom capacity is 200-250. A graduate of Scottsdale Culinary Institute in 1988, Haywood cut the teeth of his culinary career at the Boulders Resort

and at resorts in Hawaii, Telluride and Manchester, Vermont; before returning to Arizona to raise his family. “Corte Bella was a new community. Anacapa offered me a challenge but also balance in my life. Because things slow down here during the summer, I can spend more time with my children when they aren’t in school. “Anacapa was a good fit for me—a balance of career and family life. In this industry, that’s hard to come by.”

Wine-aficionado’s dream:
A private wine cellar When it comes to taking care of your favorite vintages, there’s something for everyone and every wine Q: What’s the difference between a wine storage unit and a wine cellar/wine room? A: Most wine storage units are essentially a refrigerator. They are functional, but the main focus is not on the aesthetic that it provides to a space. Conversely, wine cellars/wine rooms are built with the focus being on the aesthetic.
Q: What things should people consider in regard to their wine storage needs? A: Location, location, location! Bring the wine front and center to a place that’s not only accessible but shows off the collection. Popular locations include spaces within dining rooms, living rooms or closet/ pantry conversions. Capacity. How many bottles are you looking to store? Is capacity the No. 1 priority, or showcasing a few prized bottles? Style. Is the home traditional, modern or somewhere in-between? There are many different styles
of racking systems (wood, metal, cable suspension systems and more) and our goal is to have the cellar complement the overall style of the home. Cooling and insulation. What space does the cellar allow for a cooling unit? How is the space insulated? These are crucial questions that a wine cellar professional will need to address on a case-by-case basis. Budget. The range on cost for a wine cellar is incredibly broad. Generally speaking, a small cellar will start at around $15K and can go significantly beyond that depending on the scope of the remodel, cooling and finishes.
Q: What’s the current trend in wine storage units? A: More and more we are seeing wine-lovers incorporate their wine collection into their home décor. One of the hottest trends we are seeing right now is wine cellars that are glass-enclosed. All-glass cellar walls or glass cellar doors offer a clean, timeless appearance and open up the cellar to be a focal point within the home. It’s well-known that kitchens are not just the heart of a home, but they also play a huge role in entertaining. That’s why the homes in Encore and in CantaMia feature spacious kitchen islands with breakfast-bar seating areas that provide plenty of room to cook, converse and/ or entertain — all at the same time. “The space allows guests to sit and talk while food is being prepared,” Snoddy said. “Our kitchens also offer deluxe options for those who are serious chefs.” Similarly, the culinary spaces inside the homes at Province and Mission Royale are flattered by upscale features and options that ensure the floor plans work well for entertaining. “Our gourmet kitchens are available with hundreds of surfaces and backsplashes to personalize your space,” Grobstein said. “These kitchens are perfect for entertaining with open floor plans adjacent to great rooms.
