Last Wright-designed home for sale Architect began work on curvaceous ‘Norman Lykes home’ in 1959 and it was built in 1967 with rounded windows and walls to blend into the desert mountain it is perched on. His apprentice John Rattenbury ÿnished the design, and the house was built in 1967.

Luciano said the home has had only two owners, the Lykeses and the family that bought it in the mid-1980s and is now selling it.

Buyers will soon have the rare chance to buy an iconic Phoenix home: the last house Frank Lloyd Wright ever designed.

Called the “Norman Lykes home” after who it was designed for, the almost 2,900-square-foot curvaceous house at the edge of the Phoenix Mountains Preserve can be yours for $3.25 million.

Its circle structure is reminiscent of New York’s Guggenheim Museum, also designed by Wright late in his life.

The proliÿc architect created more than 1,000 buildings across the world, but this house is the only one of his currently for sale in metro Phoenix.

“It’s an amazing home, and one of only 14 circle houses designed

by Wright,” said Jack Luciano, an agent with the Scottsdale o“ce of Beverly Hills-based brokerage The Agency.

He will be listing the three-bedroom Lykes home for sale in early 2018.

Not the most famous Phoenix Wright house The Lykes home is the ÿrst Wright-designed Valley house to go on the market since the controversy over the architect’s most famous Arizona house ended.

In June, years of ÿghting over preserving the David and Gladys Wright house in Phoenix’s Arcadia neighborhood came to an end when it was donated for use by the Taliesin West architecture program.

The home built in 1952 was designed for Wright’s son and his wife.

Taliesin West is the school and winter camp Wright founded in Scottsdale in 1937.

Wright’s blueprint on Phoenix From Arizona State University’s grand Gammage Auditorium, originally designed for a Baghdad opera house, to his signature concrete and circular homes and the First Christian Church with its 77-foot spire, Wright gave the Valley its own architecture style.

“He (Wright) was drawn to Arizona by a certain magic of the desert environment,” said growth expert and attorney Grady Gammage Jr. after the Arca-

dia house was preserved. “It presented a kind of clear canvas on which he wanted to paint with his organic architectural style.”

Gammage’s father, former ASU President Grady Gammage, was friends with Wright and commissioned him to build the university’s auditorium in 1957.

“That style, low buildings using concrete, wood and lots of shade, evolved into an adaptation of the ranch-house style that became the hallmark of Phoenix,” said Gammage Jr. “It is sometimes hard to see his style embedded in those houses — but drive around and look at the remaining ranches and you see his influence.”

Wright is often credited with designing the Arizona Biltmore Hotel. But

though the concrete blocks were his design, the hotel’s architect was one of his former students, Albert Chase McArthur.

Other Wright houses in the Valley z The Raymond Carlson house, near 11th Street and Bethany Home Road in Phoenix, designed in 1950. z The Benjamin Adelman house, near 30th Street and the Arizona Canal in Phoenix, designed in 1950. z The Pieper House, near 65th Street and Cheney Road in Paradise Valley, designed in 1952. z The Boomer Cottage, near the Adelman house at 30th Street and the Arizona Canal in Phoenix, designed in 1953. z The Harold Price house, near Tatum Boulevard and Clearwater Parkway in Paradise Valley, designed in 1954.

Last, but not least The Lykes house was designed in Wright’s organic architecture style to

blend in with the curves of the desert mountains near it. Unobstructed views from the house overlook Palm Canyon and stretch all the way south to Sky Harbor International Airport.

The house originally had ÿve bedrooms, but some were as small as walkin closets. Rattenbury updated the home’s interior design in 1994 , transforming some of the small bedrooms into a master bedroom.

Luciano said all changes to the home were approved by Taliesin West to adhere to the home’s original design.

A crescent-shaped pool, part of Wright’s original design, was also added. And a room designed as a workshop was converted into a home theater.

“Wright transformed architecture through organic design, a principle on display at the Lykes House as the home is integrated with the mountain on which it is built, while its living room windows embrace a commanding view of the Valley,” said Stuart Gra‘ , CEO of the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation.

NEW YORK – More people are getting voice-activated speakers and other smart devices for convenience and security. But doing so could also be giving hackers a key to their homes.

Many devices from reputable manufacturers have safeguards built in, but those can’t guarantee against hacks.

Before buying one, here are some risks to assess.

Listening in Speakers with built-in microphones are increasingly popular. Devices such as Amazon’s Echo and Google Home let people check the weather or their personal calendar with simple voice commands. Beyond that, many smart TVs and TV streaming devices now have

voice-activated functions, often for playback controls and video search.

Many newer toys also come with microphones so kids can talk to them and get canned responses.

Many of these devices are listening for your commands; when they receive them, they connect to corporate servers to carry them out. What if you’re having private conversations at home? Are they getting sent over the internet, too?

In some cases, sound recordings will only leave home when you trigger the device. You might have to speak a command phrase like “OK Google” or press a button to get the device’s attention.

Check before buying to make sure a product includes such safeguards.

They also typically store video online, so you can see whether your housekeeper actually cleaned the kitchen last week. Some services routinely send video to online storage; others do so only when triggered by a sound or motion.

If you want to be very careful, you might want to turn the camera to face the wall when you’re home. You might also want to turn off the microphone, since it could capture background conversations. Or just unplug the camera altogether … though you’ll also have to remember to reconnect it when you leave.

Digital trails Smart locks let you unlock doors with an app, so you can let in guests even when you’re not home. Burglars might try to hack the system, though it’s often easier for them to just break a window.

Some rental properties are also turning to smart locks to control access.

When you move out, the landlord can automatically disable your digital key.

But these systems also let landlords track your whereabouts and those of your guests. If you create a guest key that’s used daily, for instance, the landlord might suspect you have an unauthorized occupant.

Even if you own the home, these keys can leave a digital trail. In a child-custody dispute, your ex might subpoena the records to learn that you’ve been staying out late on school nights.
