As Karlsson worked his way up in life, he began amassing a collection of American classics that became so large he opened up World of Classics Museum and Sales, a 38,000-square-foot museum in Stockholm, to showcase his incredible collection of American classics. Then, proving again that one is not enough, Karlsson and his family opened the doors on a second 31,000-square-foot museum near his part-time home in Florida. Housing roughly 250 classic cars at any time between the two facilities, Karlsson is constantly changing out pieces of the collection to offer visitors a new experience every time. CHOOSING BETWEEN THESE TWO BEL AIRS COULD BE DIFFICULT By Roger C. Johnson It would be difficult to pick one other American car model that has stood the test of time more convincingly than a 1957 two-door Chevrolet Bel Air. All of us have dreamed of owning one most of our lives. If you haven’t purchased yours yet because you can’t decide between a stock one or a Resto-Mod, get ready to have your cake and eat it, too. Here are two great examples ready to cross the auction block with No Reserve at the upcoming April 1113 Palm Beach Auction. Lot #731, a ’57 Bel Air Custom Hardtop, is a dramatically altered car, yet looks practically all stock on the outside. But the fun begins underneath the obvious. The body was removed from the original frame and replaced with a complete custom-fabricated chassis, powder-coated black
The Bel Air’s interior retains all its original character but still reinterprets the look, function and feel of this car. A custom interior using Hydes leather and repolished chrome elements was the masterful work of noted specialist Sid Chavers. Even the steering wheel was recreated by EVOD to replicate the original, and is attached to a Flaming River steering column. A comprehensive custom audio sound package was installed using high-quality Masconi and Focal components. Analog gauges by Dakota Digital keep track of all the machine’s vital signs. and designed for custom coilovers. A DSE power rack & pinion steering package with sixth-generation Corvette spindles makes it safe and efficient, and a one-inch antisway bar helps keep the playing field level. Out back, a 4-link suspension incorporates an aluminum Panhard bar locating a custom-built 9-inch Moser center section spinning 3.89 gears and 31-spline Moser axles. A new GM LS3 engine producing over 500 horsepower brings this ’57 dramatically into the 21st century. Its pristine engine bay highlights a polished front-mount serpentine belt and pulley system. Custom-made valve covers lend even more visual impact. Items like the cold-air intake plumbing and external coils have been hidden from sight, so as not to distract the eye from the heart of the matter. Even the firewall was re-engineered for efficiency and your viewing pleasure. A special transmission tunnel was created to house the Tremec T56 6-speed manual tranny. The meticulously designed stainless-steel exhaust system was fabricated for this very application and incorporates MagnaFlow mufflers, for the ultimate in internal-combustion listening pleasure. As you would expect, all the wiring is brand-new in this machine, with products from Ron Francis, and incorporates modern connectors throughout the engine bay. The beast is cooled with an AutoRad aluminum radiator and core support utilizing twin cooling fans, while Ringbrothers hood hinges keep everything covered and accessible with the ease and style of old-world craftsmanship at its finest.

When it comes to original, Lot #717 is a pure stock 1957 Bel Air convertible equipped with all the right stuff to have made it into an immediate hot rod on the streets in 1957, and an instant prized collectible on the streets of today. Equipped with the then new, and now ultra-rare, fuelinjected 283 small block, this ’57 had the power to go with its timeless styling. The awesome Chevy small block was the first engine to generate one horsepower per cubic inch. In a Corvette of the same year, the Fuelie 283 made it the fastest production car in the world. This famous Rochester injection setup was actually redesigned by GM’s in-house engineers, who were said to be guided on the project by Mr. Zora Duntov himself. Less than 1,500 of these fuelinjected engines were sold in the full-sized Chevy that year. A two-speed PowerGlide transmission makes this car effortless to drive, even in today’s traffic. Fender skirts, wide whitewall tires, chromed tail fins and a Continental kit out back gave this sporty convertible all the style it needed to turn heads on people of all ages through the last six decades. As a bonus, the legendary George Barris noticed this beautifully original Bel Air at a car show and signed the glove box. So, if your tastes run towards the ultimate full-size Chevrolet collectible produced in the magical year of 1957, these two examples – one with all of today’s modcons and the other a stock example of the ’50s finest – are guaranteed to keep you in love for decades to come.
