Como usted sabe, los niños de hoy enfrentan desafíos significativos que afectan la forma en que pueden aprender en la escuela. En febrero, nuestra Junta de Gobierno aprobó una resolución que confirma el compromiso del distrito de proporcionar a los estudiantes acceso a servicios para apoyar su salud física, mental y emocional. s the district moves toward delivering on our promise that every student is known by name, served by strength and need, and graduates ready for college, career and community, I’d like to share one of our key priorities for the 2019–20 school year.

You may be aware that today’s children face significant challenges impacting how they can learn in school. In February, our Governing Board passed a resolution confirming the district’s commitment to providing students access to services to support their physical, mental and emotional health. Research has consistently shown that supporting the whole child leads to better academic and life outcomes.

To ensure our students are ready to learn, Mesa Public Schools is hiring an additional 35.5 elementary counselor and/or social worker positions to increase support for our students’ social and emotional needs. Additionally, we are redefining these positions to ensure face-to-face time with students is maximized.

I urge us to collectively come together as a community to support our children, whether it’s volunteering in schools, serving in a nonprofit capacity or contributing your time to ensure adequate funding for our needs. Miner and her husband, Don, have lived in Mesa for more than 32 years.

They have three sons who graduated from Mountain View High School and three grandchildren who currently attend district schools.

Her term expires Dec. 31, 2020.

Sears and her husband, Ernest, have two daughters who graduated from Red Mountain High School. An experienced public policy creator and implementer, she has contributed to critical laws and organizations statewide. She believes every child deserves an opportunity to access a quality education.

Her term expires Dec. 31, 2020.

Hutchinson and her husband, Mike, have lived in Mesa for 39 years, and have two daughters who graduated from Red Mountain High School. During her 28-year career with the district, she taught history and advised extracurricular activities at Dobson, Mesa and Red Mountain high schools. Her term expires Dec. 31, 2022.

Peterson has lived in Mesa for over 17 years.

He and his wife, Julie, have eight children, including Westwood High School graduates.

An accountant by day, he has served as a member of a Grand Canyon Council Committee for the Boy Scouts of America and youth leader in Venture Scouts. His term expires Dec. 31, 2020.

Richardson and her husband, Randy, are products of Mesa Public Schools. Their six children are graduates of or current students at district schools. Richardson taught for several years at the elementary level. She believes great schools make great cities and is happy to serve the schools she loves.

t Eisenhower Center for Innovation, one-to-one technology is preparing students for careers of the future, starting with its youngest learners.

At the two-time Apple Distinguished School, students use iPads throughout the day for learning, including reading, research and creating presentations. Virtual activities such as instant quizzes keep learning fun.

“The technology is so valuable for engaging students, helping them be interested and excited about learning,” says Principal Robert Meldau.

In Tori Griffith’s kindergarten class, students complete a social studies unit on American symbols, then use a program to

photograph, upload and record themselves reading facts they’ve learned. As a result, students create unique digital books to share with their family.

“I love this project because it covers so many academic standards,” Griffith says. “Parents are always impressed that their child was able to complete a project of that magnitude. People say that kindergarten students are unable to create using technology, and this project shows they are completely capable with the right training and tools.”

Meldau says one of the most important outcomes of Eisenhower’s iPad initiative is the opportunity for immediate intervention.

“We all have memories of turning in a paper and getting it back the next day from our teacher,” Meldau shares. “Technology eliminates that entire time gap. Students can get instant feedback, and teachers can be more strategic about how they use their time to help students.”

Creative collaboration via Google This fall, 26 district schools participated in the third annual Monster Hangout, one of several activities educational technology trainers lead in classrooms across the district.

Trainer Teresa Williams coordinates the creative writing and communication event that uses Google Hangouts to connect Mesa classrooms with one another, as well as classrooms outside Arizona. Williams carefully plans the event, taking into account grade levels, bell schedules and even time zones when partnering classes.

Once partner classrooms are in place, students design monsters on paper or digitally. Afterward, they write a description of their monster, whether it’s procedural style, including transitions and steps, or descriptive essays, focusing on shape, color

and unique details. When both classes have completed their writing, they exchange descriptions, and the fun happens.

“Students use the descriptions to recreate the monsters based solely on what the other class has written,” Williams shares.

“At this point, the students realize how important it is to use specific details and write steps chronologically. As they follow instructions, they learn how to be more descriptive with their own writing.”

Via Google Hangouts, classes then share the monsters they’ve recreated and reveal the original monsters. Students spend time discussing comparisons, traits

and how they could improve their writing for a better outcome.

Students practice collaboration, digital literacy, critical thinking and problem-solving. School participation has grown each year. In Fall 2018, 43 district teachers at 26 schools conducted Hangouts with students in 20 cities, 16 states and Canada.

“I loved the engagement of my students,” says Salk Elementary fifthgrade teacher Alishia Sechez. “Writing to communicate with another classroom of students is powerful, and it makes the standards very real to the students.”

Project Based Learning tackles real-world problems In Sharisse Nunes’ sixth-grade Falcon Hill Elementary class, students discuss the engineering design process. Students imagine, create and build miniature chair prototypes based on their simulated clients’ needs. The room bubbles with excitement, as Nunes masterfully guides her pupils through the lesson, using Project Based Learning (PBL) methodology.

“I want you to imagine you are a carpenter hired by your client to build a chair,” Nunes tells the class. “Think about their needs. How is your chair going to be unique?

Please get into teams and discuss your ideas.”

After lively conversation, students sketch ideas on paper, then work as a team to build models using pipe cleaners, toothpicks and model clay.

Project Based Learning teaches students to identify and provide solutions to problems beyond their school. Students gain knowledge and skills by investigating and responding to complex challenges. PBL ensures students are equipped with the skills necessary for collaboration. Students learn while thinking critically, using their creativity and imagination. They explore concepts such as color wheel personalities, learning styles and growth mindset to discover their personal styles. This helps them recognize peers’ traits, allowing them to work as a team.

Upon completing a project, Nunes says students have better understanding of the content presented, retain information longer and can apply knowledge to new situations.

Students then take the lead in designing presentations to demonstrate their learning at a showcase for family and community.

“The very mention of PBL gets students excited,” Nunes says. “Each project meets a

“Many of the ASU teaching college representatives have said, ‘This is the way of the future for teaching, and we need to make sure our college students are prepared,’” McIntosh says.

Principal Patty Christie encourages curious community members to contact the school and set an appointment to see Rhodes to Success in person.

“Every time we talk to people, they want to bring other people to see what we’re doing,” Christie says. “When someone learns about us, they tell someone else and before I know it, we have five to 10 more people who want to come see how it works. It’s been pretty amazing.”

Joe Martinez

School safety specialist and truancy officer

F

or 18 years, Joe Martinez has ensured the safety of all students, teachers and staff. District security officers are an integral part of the school staff community, helping provide a secure learning environment and making sure students and parents comply with truancy laws.

District security staff members are the first response support to district schools, actively patrolling campuses to deter criminal activity and working with police when necessary. For security team members like Martinez, providing interventions and building relationships is one of the most important elements of their job.

“Interacting and developing positive relationships with students has a domino effect,” Martinez says. “The student walks away understanding that someone genuinely cares about them, which trickles into the school and into the classroom, which creates a better environment for all.”

Coreen Wax

Student information specialist, information systems

C

oreen Wax joined Mesa Public Schools in 1988 as a student worker. Over the years, the district has provided her with a variety of valuable work experiences.

As a member of the student information team, she enhances all students’ educational experiences by ensuring their electronic data is safe and accurate.

“We work behind the scenes taking care of student information,” Wax says. “We are always evolving and making things more convenient and efficient for our families and staff.”

Wax is part of the team that oversees the Synergy student data system and Portal. Electronic management makes information available anytime. Parents can access their student’s Portal 24/7, to view everything from grades and attendance to teacher contact information.

Recently, Wax oversaw the shift from paper to online student enrollment, which streamlines the process and ensures more accurate data collection.

“Shifting the enrollment process online is a key component in providing parents the convenience and flexibility of completing enrollment at their leisure instead of waiting in line,” Wax says.

“For schools, it saves time and money.”

D

r. Robert Carlisle and the research, assessment and accountability team turn data into knowledge, so parents, teachers and administrators can better support student learning.

Carlisle started his career with the district six years ago, after earning his doctorate in social psychology from Baylor University.

The department supports district employees by administering mandated testing programs, monitoring state and federal accountability systems, evaluating programs, collecting data and making projections so teachers can plan for appropriate class resources.

“I love my job and can’t imagine doing anything else,” Carlisle says. “The work of this department touches every person in the district.”

ellie McCarthy always had a calling to help children. As a proud graduate of Mesa Public Schools, it’s the only place she wanted to work. She gives back to the district by helping parents and students be successful.

“Kino Junior High is my home,” McCarthy says. “Working with junior high students is interesting, and no two days are the same.

I enjoy helping students learn their worth and what they can do with their lives.”

McCarthy and Kino’s small team small team of 2.5 counselors not only help the school’s 1,100 students consider their educational paths, but they also focus on their social and emotional well-being. Junior high students often turn to their friends for advice and acceptance more than their parents. In a digital world, children are more affected by online comments made by others, either positive or negative.

“School counselors are often the adult figures students feel comfortable sharing personal things with,” McCarthy shares.

“Students can’t be successful if obstacles are blocking their way.”

Rita Bracamonte-Rodriguez Homeless family liaison

A

ccording to Rita Bracamonte-Rodriguez, student homelessness knows no boundaries. Under the McKinney-Vento Act, Rodriguez and colleagues ensure that students experiencing homelessness are enrolled in school and have access to transportation, clothing and essentials to provide educational stability.

All it can take is for a parent to lose a job or suffer an illness, and their family situation can escalate from struggling with bills to losing their home. With increasing community poverty rates, an affordable housing shortage and a wait list for transitional housing, Rodriguez’ office is a lifeline for families.

“Every call we take is a distress call,” she shares. “As a district alumna, I believe that it’s important for our families in crisis to know we are here to help them.”

Adrian Lopez

Secretary to the principal, Taft Elementary School

W

ith superhero-like skills, Adrian Lopez and school secretaries across the district handle administrative details with ease. Multitasking is second nature, and they make juggling projects look easy.

Lopez is celebrating 19 years with Mesa Public Schools. In her role as secretary to the principal at Taft Elementary School, she enjoys being the support system for their community.

“There is something especially gratifying about being at an elementary school,” Lopez says. “Helping children and seeing the difference you are making is huge.”

Not only is Lopez an expert on her campus, but she’s also helping educate and support secretaries throughout the district as a boot camp trainer. “Every school’s needs are a little different,” Lopez says. “My goal is to help them find the answers to how things need to happen on their campus.”

F

or Joann Seamster, joining the district 29 years ago was spurred by an opportunity to serve her community while enjoying excellent benefits. She smiles when she shares that she’s stayed because of the students.

“Our job is all about the children,” Seamster says. “If I didn’t think that I could make a difference, then I wouldn’t be here.”

Facility assistants are miracle workers who make a positive impact on everyone who passes through the building. With safety as their top priority, facility assistants keep schools clean, well-functioning and problem free.

Seamster says the secret to success is in the fine details of ensuring learning environments are tidy, comfortable and welcoming.

Facility assistants understand their role in maintaining a campus that makes students, staff and parents proud of their school.

“When students smile at me, it tells me everything I need to know,” Seamster says.

At more than 40 schools across the district, students are developing green thumbs.

t Keller Elementary School, students snip, pick and pull items from their garden club harvest. They fill bags with produce to take home and share with their families.

“Wow, this is so cool, it’s like shopping in your garden,” shares a sixth-grader as he samples a mint leaf.

Throughout Mesa Public Schools, teachers are extending their classrooms outdoors. School gardens provide unique learning opportunities for students to engage in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Getting started For more than a decade, former physical education teacher Lynette Kaspor has cultivated a passion for gardening at Keller Elementary School. In the early days, her biggest challenge was finding the resources to get started. Today, the garden club flourishes. Community mentors

volunteer their time and knowledge to help students develop a love for nature.

Keller Elementary School uses a rotating schedule, giving all students the chance to learn about gardening. Every seven weeks, 30 new students participate in the popular club, where they learn about recycling seeds, sustainability, garden pollinators and teamwork.

Through the years, Kaspor has received requests from other district educators asking for her secret to success. It has become one of her passions to help others create gardens on their campuses. After retiring, Kaspor invested countless hours researching, planning and overseeing her gardens. She wrote grants, gave advice on starting and maintaining school gardens, and organized a community network for teachers.

“Starting a student garden can be overwhelming,” Kaspor says. “I wanted to do the legwork to make it easier for teachers to get excited about gardens.”

Planting seeds of knowledge Kaspor enlisted the help of Cheryl McCaw, former elementary science and social studies specialist and current preschool teacher, to collaborate on a garden curriculum.

“Gardens support the 21st century learning skills industries expect from their employees,” McCaw shares. “Industries desire a workforce that boasts success skills. They want their employees to collaborate, think critically and be creative.”

McCaw says tending gardens can help develop many skills, including creativity and empathy.

“School gardens provide a lot of benefits that are not measured by a test,” she says.

“Students have opportunities for creative expression, and they develop a sense of satisfaction and pride in their accomplishments, which builds self-esteem.”

Whether students are journaling about cause-and-effect outcomes, researching the ultimate compost mixture, deciphering the correct soil pH for plants, or using graphs and diagrams to illustrate their work, they simply enjoy gardening.

“I love plants, and being able to share my passion with students is a dream come true for me,” says the longtime volunteer.

“Watching students take ownership and express sheer joy is gratifying.”
