Indeed, as befits the barometer of the world-class collector-car market, Barrett-Jackson is filling this year’s docket with more than 1,400 rare and collectible vehicles, a small sampling of which includes a wow-worthy 1947 Talbot-Lago T-26 Worblaufen Cabriolet, one of three Talbot-Lago T-26 Cabriolets built by the famous Carrosserie Worblaufen of Switzerland. This big, bold, beauty — being offered for sale for the first time in 24 years — has a 4.5-liter, 6-cylinder engine and a Wilson pre-selector gearbox that was used in both Talbot race and road cars. Also featured on this year’s docket is the coveted 1938 Coddington V12 HEMI, “The French Connection.” Nestled atop a custom Art Morrison chassis, this one-off, custommade car boasts a 12.8-liter, all-aluminum HEMI-headed V12 BPM motor and a custom-built Turbo 400 transmission. Sporting an appearance similar to a 1937 Delahaye

and luxurious ostrich-leather upholstery, it was the last creation of legendary builder Boyd Coddington, the late star of “American Hot Rod,” which aired on TLC and The Discovery Channel from 2004 to 2008. Indeed, to get a little perspective, let’s take a short stroll down memory lane. The year was 1960. The King of Rock and Roll, Elvis Presley, was promoted to sergeant in the U.S. Army. In Chicago, the first Playboy Club opened, while Russ and Nellie Jackson, along with sons Brian and Craig, moved to Scottsdale from Michigan. They opened a successful car wash, but one of the things Russ brought with him from “cold country” was a love for classic cars. Meanwhile, Tom Barrett III, along with his wife Bonnie and their children, landed in Scottsdale about the same time. Thanks to Tom’s penchant for buying and selling classic cars, Tom and Russ hit it off and in
and Tom kept the auction momentum going on an annual basis, generating ever-increasing sales over the years. SUCCESS BUILT ON HARD WORK

1967 established the “Fiesta de los Autos Elegantes” car show that benefitted Scottsdale’s art center and library. All this led to the BarrettJackson Auction Company, established in 1971. The two families put up half of the approximately 150 cars from their personal collections, which consisted of some of
the world’s greatest collector cars. Among them was an armored Mercedes-Benz 770K that sold for $153,200 – more than tripling the previous auction record and an event significant enough to be covered on the national evening news. That first barn-burner event was so successful that Russ
A jump ahead to 2015 shows that the groundwork set in those early years paid off big-time — in 2015, Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale boasted 1,611 vehicles and 2,000 pieces of collectible automobilia selling for more than $137 million. It was the highest-grossing Automobilia Auction in history. But getting to that level of success required a lot more than simply running a parade of cars through the tents. For example, BarrettJackson was the pioneer in televised auction coverage and now Barrett-Jackson auctions are televised live on Discovery Channel, Velocity and around the world on Discovery Net-
works International. Barrett-Jackson Auction Company has also steadily expanded its geographic footprint over the years. In 2003, the company added a Palm Beach event and in 2008 added a Las Vegas auction. The newest event is the inaugural Northeast Auction, slated for June 23–25, 2016, at Mohegan Sun in Connecticut. CHARITABLE CONTRIBUTIONS
Since its inception in 1971, the company has raised nearly $85 million for worthy causes. A few examples: • The 1950 General Motors Futurliner Parade of Progress Tour Bus from the Ron Pratte Collection sold for $4 million in Scottsdale in 2015, with 100 percent of the hammer price benefitting the Armed Forces Foundation. • Also at Scottsdale in
2015, the new Shelby GT350R, VIN 001, sold for $1 million to benefit the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. • In 2014 at Scottsdale, the first retail production 2014 Z/28 Camaro sold for$650,000, with the entire price going to The Cornerstone Schools. BIG NUMBERS
Add up the whole package — hard work, innovation, unforgettable cars and extraordinarily talented people — and you get some big, BIG numbers. Along with the nearly $85 million in charitable contributions raised over the years, at Palm Beach last year, a record 60,000 attendees witnessed 526 vehicles sold, generating $22 million. I
t’s safe to say there’s hardly a millennial out there who doesn’t know of the “Transformers™” movie franchise – or of the two non-human superstars Bumblebee™. This duo of the most famous vehicles in the world from the Hollywood big screen will cross the Barrett-Jackson block in January at WestWorld. Like the movie character that it represents, Optimus Prime is big. It has real presence. Its shiny oversized exhaust stacks produce a rumble distinctive to its character. While it doesn’t transform into a two-story synthetic military leader from Cybertron, it is a fully functional vehicle with some very interesting features, including rows of glowing lights that suggest an intelligent being looming within. But by far the centerpiece of the Optimus Prime stunt truck is its custom grille capped off with a silver and red “Autobots®” emblem. Imagine seeing that in your rearview mirror. Don’t mess with Optimus Prime! Equally, if not more, impressive than Optimus Prime is his brother-at-arms, Bumblebee, the 1967 Chevrolet Camaro Resto-Mod that starred in “Transformers 4: Age of Extinction.” Precocious and seeking approval, Bumblebee is, in many circles, the most beloved Transformers character. After its appearance on the silver screen, this heavily customized 1967 Camaro selling at Barrett-Jackson has lived a charmed life as part of Transformers director Michael Bay’s personal
