Today I present you an INSTANT. An

water and walls. A land of collapsed houses, inaccessible and unsafe spaces, old garages that produce a collision between 4 cities: Barcelona, Sant Adria, Badalona and Santa Coloma. It is an INSTANT of a ghost plot in Generalitat avenue, where only the neighbors know of its existence ,although it is also invisible to them; clogged houses, forgotten warehouses, an old truck parking lot and a cluster of waste and abandoned cars.

INSTANT of a Neigbourhood, as the inhabitants say, “... grey, lightless, dirty and inaccessible...” of a parallel world 17 meters above the sea. What if we join these two parallel universes, that now belongs to a magical reality of García Marquez 1?

.. . E L DE RLY PE DRO YO UN G I S A BE L A . . .

The project proposal was born during a walk through the Safaretjos neighbourhood in Santa Coloma de Gramenet, in which I met two families so similar and so different at the same time. The ex-official Pedro, now retired, who lives his life alone, in not accessible house on Generalitat Avenue. Talking to Pedro, he not only experiences the feeling of social loneliness because he became widowed and his only daughter lives in London, but because emotional loneliness of feeling alone. He comments that this weakening in social relationships suffered by older people is very common in that neighborhood despite many retirees are living there, because is no day center, where people like him can fight this loneliness. On the other “squatters” in

hand, I met a family of two Brazilian emigrants, who lived as an industrial building on the same avenue. This family resides illegally and with a totally uncertain future. They live in a caravan inside the building, a building where the family man fixes cars and the mother took care of the home, while her 3-year-old daughter Isabella is locked up in the building all day crying.

covered spaces and open spaces that will guide the visitor to their entrances.

Across the Void is an intervention in which the built and the empty tries to enhance the value of the environment - the River Park of the Besòs River - going from being a abandoned plot of almost unattainable scale, to becoming a green space with equipment that responds to the neighborhood dimensions.

The buildings are presented as a large folded green roof which will be formed by a concrete slab that will absorb the changes in geometry produced in the plan. The existing dwellings located after the proposal are characterized by being houses of 5- or 6-meter corridor, corridor understood as the space between two load-bearing walls, this type of construction forms a very significant part of the urban landscape nowadays.

The proposal consists in solving the complex orography of the neighborhood through the construction of green roofs that intend to merge with the urban landscape. Those green roofs enclose urban spaces, creating community relations areas of different uses. The project focuses on the Safaretjos neighborhood in Santa Coloma de Gramenet. It is a territory placed on a central part of the Besòs territory, but at the same time it is located on the periphery of its city, Santa Coloma de Gramenet. The neighborhood is delimited by the hospital area of Santa Coloma (Hospital del Sant Esperit) and the Besòs river. It is well connected with Barcelona, Badalona and Sant Adria de Besòs. The Safaretjos neighborhood consists mostly of dwellings, that rely on the services and equipment of nearest neighborhoods. The complaints of the neighbors are that they barely have shops and equipment, even so, a project was promoted for the neighborhood - Strategic Residential Area (ARE) -, which planned to build 310 dwellings in a 30 floors skyscraper, elevated in front of river views and other blocks. The neighbors, protesting and giving their vision in the media of how they see their neighborhood and their alternatives to ARE program have managed to stop the construction; His proposal is based on three basic pillars: rehabilitation, non-massification and provision of equipment and services. “In this direction, and, taking advantage of the fact that the area to be expropriated is or was declared a green area, we ask that instead of making 4 skyscrapers with 400 dwellings, parks and gardens should be made, with leisure and recreation areas, both for children and for older people. Places to meet friends and be with family. It is an opportunity to promote neighborhood life.” Across the Void, aims to respond to the needs of the neighborhood meeting the demands of its neighbors, and seeks to develop a program that can improve the quality of life of its inhabitants. The program is defined as the intention of creating a space that will erase all physical barriers, a creation of a park and garden with meeting spaces and proposes recreational areas, such as, nursery school and a senior citizens home. Will be two interconnected buildings through a square that unite the two most vulnerable generations of the neighbourhood to enrich both. Multiples investigations and research such as Evan Briggs, pioneer in this topic, propose coexistence between children and the elderly so they can grow and age together and demonstrate multiple benefits for both generational poles. The project is located on a plot where ARE was planned, delimited by the linear park of Rio Besòs and Avenida de la Generalitat. Where Moliner restaurant was placed, and river park have a high development potential due to its privileged location within the city, great connectivity and free space.

In first place the plan was to systematically extend the paths that define the structure of the plot and that are in a direct relationship with the proposal. Subsequently, they are deformed by a set of dilations and contractions in order to adapt it to the requirements of the future public space. Finally, with the intention of integrating into rough topography of the neighborhood, the section of each of the corridors is modified. The first block consists of a two-level flat roof, the second block has sloping roofs that guides to roof top or down to the river. The plan is projected respecting the corridor lines there was in the original idea and they are divided in two different types: Those of served spaces and those of server spaces, the only element that breaks this rule is circulation area that, at a certain point, become common areas such as multipurpose room, library, cafeteria, or playground. The

sections have the same system of corridors, areas with different purposes are created throughout the project, the server corridor are projected with greater free height, that allows the entry of natural light, while classrooms and offices (corridor of served space) have a minimum height of 2.5 to 3.5 m to create more friendly space. The horizontal parameters of the proposal have a very specific function: False ceiling has the function of zoning and separating the uses of the inner spaces. Exterior pavement merges with the lobby area pavement to indicate the direction towards the entrance of the equipment. The main feature of the land is the height changes, that we can appreciate in the cross-section of the river, which has three different levels. The solution to that problem is based on the fragmentation of the program into two parts, using each level.

Program is fragmented by phases of execution because the magnitude of the project. High priority has been given to sustainability and energy efficiency, respecting the environment; for this, passive measures have been taken such as orientation, shape, envelope, bioclimatic mechanisms in order to decrees pollution, photovoltaic solar energy from the facade and rainwater collection on the roof destined to irrigate the vegetation, which increase energetic efficiency. offers a public service while emphasize the landscape of the neighborhood and respect the environment.

Intervention

Currently

is an abandoned area that creates an inhospitable border, the reconstruction of this area represents a great opportunity to activate the local economy, generate employment, integrate different ways of life, exchange experiences and unite the inhabitants not only of the neighborhood but of the entire city.

The

project consists of building the void, always respecting the urban structure of the neighbourhood, to change a great void of nothing into a place for meetings, conventions and celebrations. All this surrounded by nature, with views toward the Besòs river.

The buildings will articulate their uses around a sequence of full

and empty spaces,

... PRIORITY TO THE ACCESSIBILITY FACILITIES... Construction Phases:

Fases de construcción:

Given

the scale of the project, it is proposed to divide it into phases, giving greater priority to the accessibility facilities to the neighborhood and public areas, as long as this does not increase time execution or rise the price of the project.

First,

the retaining walls are made in order to begin the execution of the different levels park; that solves the complex topography of the neighborhood. Next, the plumbing and deep foundations are installed with pillars supp orted by the piles and retaining walls in its perimeter, as well as the sanitary floor in the nursing home. The execution of the solid concrete slab is carried out and subsequently the green roof is installed that serves as an extension of the public space to the different levels garden.

Then the facade, interior partitions, as well as the false ceiling are fixed. The skeleton of the equipment is erected by installing the cladding roof, exterior doors and windows, water pipes, waste pipes, water heaters, air conditioning system, ducts, electrical wiring, lighting, TV, telephone, audio and safety cables. Is then when it starts the deep foundations and retaining wall for the construction of the nursery school. The execution of the public space that is between the two blocks whose function is the interconnection between these two facilities is carried out; This phase partially overlaps the procedure that has been carried out in the senior citiziens home: the building structure, green roof slab, is executed. While the extensive green roof system is installed, the façade, partitions and installations are mounted.

urban sewing strategy is proposed through a series of platforms and slopes as a grandstand, whose geometry solves the different heights of the place and the link between its boundaries: Generalitat Avenue in the East, Fluvial Park in the West, and the southern zone on the lower level of the square itself. These platforms allow, through slight changes of level, to solve the topographic lag and generate a new continuous territory, joined to the edges of the city.

A new open and flexible space; a set of different situations, levels, spatial and material dimensions, designed to be discovered by the user; a spatial and material system with multiple possibilities of use and interpretation; a hybrid between terraces, square and park. MATERIALITY Spaces

with grass plantation and ecological cobble finishes that generate intermediate situations between the artificial and the natural, and that allow the growth of vegetation and the natural drainage of water from rain. The gradation of pavements is defined by natural-artificiality relationships, starting from the hard-concrete pavement (the most urban condition), to the meadow, (the most natural condition), through intermediate mixed situations solved through ecological cobble.

... GREEN ROOFS & URBAN GREEN SPACE ... Extensive Green Roof “Rockery Type Plants”

La cubierta ecológica tipo “Tapizante floral”

Extensive green roofs call for plant that can easily deal with sun, wind and drought. The substrate has a minimum depth of 80 mm and the vegetation consists of various species which provide a long blooming period and set different accents throughout the vegetation period.

Water and nutrients are mostly supplied through natural processes. Rainfall collects in the Floradrain® storage cells and roots are provided with water through diffusion. Water is also stored in the protection mat. Excess water is drained away by the Floradrain® element. SUSTAINABALITY The contribution of these roofs to sustainable building is incalculable. In addition to value-added in terms of quality of life due to the wonderful optics, green roofs also provide tangible and measurable benefits such as the protection of the building substance. Green roofs prolong the lifetime of the roof waterproof membrane significantly as they protect it from the impact of climate and weather, for example, from ultraviolet rays and extremes of heat and cold.

Sostenibilidad: Ventajas ecológicas de las cubiertas vegetales.

In addition, the green roof build-up improves sound insulation, provides a shield against electromagnetic radiation and functions as an additional layer of insulation, which means less need for heating in the winter and a measurable cooling effect in the summer. In addition, plants bind fine dust and pollutants.

Green roofs contribute considerably to flood protection during strong rainfall events. Depending on the type of construction, 20 to 100 l/m² of storm water can be stored. Special retention green roofs even enhance this effect. The storage and evaporative effect of plants moreover, has a positive effect on the micro-climate and even this natural effect can be reinforced by a special system build-up.

Mejora del clima urbano.

ROCKERY TYPE PLANTS

“Rockery type plants“ allows consists of a wide variety of species which

Mejor protección contra el ruido

results in a long blooming period and allows for different accents throughout the vegetation period.

Sedum species and other perennialsare primarily used as a ground cover. Drought resistant perennials add flowering accents and height to the design, dianthus carthusianorum for example reaches up to 400 mm of height. The build-up is realized by manually planting plug plants.

TERRAIN RETAINING SYSTEMS Due to the proximity of the water table and the low resistance and consistency of the soil, the containment of the land will be made with a retaining wall of reinforced concrete, because piloting would bring problems of possible water seepage between the piles. This wall will be 30 cm thick and 7 cm of ventilation will be left for possible damp condensation from the ground that will collect them and channel them to the drain.

Structure The structure is based on solid reinforced concrete slabs supported by metal pillars. Pillars are placed every 5 or 6 meters to be able to get a cover of little edge and pillars of 22 cm in section that could adopt within the irregular geometry of the plant.

INTERIOR SPACE DIAGRAM 32

...ARTICULATION OF DIFFERENT SPACES...

NURSERY SCHOOL The project is based on the desire to respond the need to develop a teaching program and is distributed on two levels. The organization of the plan is carried out through the articulation of different spaces, seeking, on one hand, south orientation (optimal during the school months) and on the other, direct relations with the outside. Based on this idea, a central space for circulation and common areas with different pavement treatments is generated. The building has a direct visual relationship with public space and the senior citizien home. The north façade of the nursery school overlooks a square, the south to a courtyard connected to the classrooms. It seeks to develop the equipment with maximum occupancy on the ground floor, to facilitate the mobility and accessibility of children. The building consists of two corridors that are organized on the rectangular floor and the program is developed on two levels. The served spaces are located on the ground floor. That is organized in such a way that the areas of server spaces are placed in a corridor that faces to the north, while the areas of served spaces of a long stay are placed in a corridor that face to the south. The internal workspace program is located on the first floor. The proposal follows the needs of the functional program of the methodological guide on recommendations for the construction of municipal nursery school published by the area of education of the Red de Municipios de la Diputación de Barcelona in June 2006.

Therefore, the solution adopted goes towards achieving a high level of comfort and a rational operation of that program. The building project incorporates accessibility conditions established by current regulations. Vertical communication is solved with an elevator of practicable dimensions that communicates all levels. On the other hand, it has a two-sided ramp that allows down to the ground floor where equipment are placed and not exceed 8%.

Advantages Improves the urban climate

The “Sedum Carpet” is a standard build-up for extensive green roofs. It is a shallow and lightweight green roof type with an attractive “back-to-nature” appearance, that requires little maintenance.

Reduce pollution

Floradrain® FD 25-E is the appropriate drainage and waterstorage element for this system. It has the necessary compressive strength, a low profile height, little weight and is walkable. Proven Sedum species, in combination with the adapted substrate and system build-up, guarantee a durable green roof. The system substrate “Sedum Carpet” is particularly suitable for extensive green roofs as well as the plant community “Sedum Carpet”, containing various low-growing Sedum species that are wind- and frost-resistant. The main blooming time is early summer with yellow, red and white flowers dominating. During the year, “Sedum Carpet” is represented in various shades of green. Red shades show particularly in autumn and are a nice change in the green roof´s appearance.

Vegetable covers moisten the air. Reduce atmospheric heating. Improves the microclimate of urban centers.

Vegetable roofs are an environmental filter. Reduces dust and toxic elements.

Site specific to allow penetration of law winter sun, while blocking the high summe sun.

LOUVERS

The use of Cáviti pieces is basically to form a non-recoverable formwork that protects the building from moisture by capillarity.

ACROSS& THE VOID

ROOF OVERHANG

Is a natural method of cooling. The system relies on wind to force cool exterior air into the building through an open window) while outlet forces warm interior air outside through a roof vent.

ULMA VENTILATED FACADE

Extensive Green Roof “Sedum Carpet” – The Proven Ecological Protective Layer

Fully insulated curtain walling system Jansen VISS TVS (vertical) with complete thermal bridge break made with steel profiles The VISS HI façade system allows steel façades to achieve passive house standard.

SANITARY FITTINGS CÁVITI

Paver BREINCO VULCANO allows for the movement of wáter and air around the paving material. Water is filtered directly and is taken for irrigation to garden areas.

CROSS VENTILATION

CURTAIN WALLING SYSTEM

The south facing partion of the façade offers an ideal location for the addition of photovoltaics and solar collection.

PERVIOUS PAVES

PHOTOVOLTAICS LOUVERS

Water is collected along the green roof and into a cistem. This water can then be used to grow green areas, sedum plants and sedum roof.

GREEN ROOF

The orientation of the project responds to the need for natural light, and the use of solar redirection to heat the building.

WATER COLLECTION

Underground inertia system. Large thermal mass of the soil accumulates heat in summer and slowly yields it throughout winter

ORIENTATION

Decidious trees provide shade during the summer and then lose their leaves in the winter, alowing the sunlight to passively heat the building Orientation

SUSTAINABILITY

Louvers Angle of orientable louvers is site specific in order to maximiza solar benefit motorized perogla

motorized system adapts the position of the slats on the pergola according to the weather conditions.

With this system a continuous insulation can be achieved for the exterior of the building, protecting the interior sheet as well as the slab edges. In the ventilated chamber, due to the heating of the air layer of the intermediate space compared to the environment air, the so called “chimney effect” is produced which generates a continuous ventilation in the chamber.

Increase water retention

Green roofs retain up to 90% of precipitation.

Improves protection against noise Green covers isolate acoustics up to 3 dB. Improves soundproofing up to 8 dB.

Save energy

Landscaped roofs improve thermal insulation.

Prolong waterproofing

Protects from extreme temperatures or radiation.

It offers a naturalized habitat

Vegetable roofs provide a natural habitat Alternative for animals and plants.
