Industry Guidance

RLSS UK are contacted regularly by operators with questions about safety in swimming pools, including specific challenges or practices. As a charity our aim is to ensure everyone can ensure water safely, which includes supporting swimming pool operators to offer a safe environment. It is important to us to help and support operators and one way in which we do this is by providing free guidance.

We have used our experience, our expert Advisors, Partners, and information from other organisations and created simple guidance to help answer some of the questions that Operators and their employees may have about safety in swimming pools.

Free and available to all at www.rlss.org.uk/safety-guidance, along with helpful links to guidance and expertise from other organisations. There are presently statements regarding the following:

• Lifeguards - Mobile Phones and Smart Devices

• Ramadan and Fasting - Swimming Safety Considerations

• Administering Medication

• Shallow Water Blackout, Hyperventilation and Breath Holding

• Do Not Resuscitate (DNR, DNACPR, ADRT, RESPECT)

• Lifeguarding and Ramadan

• Technology in Swimming Pools

• Managing Health and Safety in Swimming Pools

• Lifeguards working in Hot Weather (Outdoor Facilities)

• Lifeguard Zone Visibility Test (LZVT)

• Pool Safety Operating Procedure (PSOP) - Example content

• Frequency of Ongoing Training for Lifeguards

We also plan to add new guidance statements over the next few months and more, so bookmark the page as a good reference for tricky topics.
