A LETTER FROM THE CHAIR UChicago Special Collections Research Center

As we speed past the midterm of autumn quarter, it is time to salute the extraordinary efforts of our faculty, students, and staff who are valiantly meeting the challenges of teaching, researching, and studying during the pandemic. I’ve been profoundly impressed by the untiring dedication and resourcefulness shown by our instructors as they make the hybrid and remote classroom a hub for dynamic learning; by faculty and graduate students who are creating an astoundingly robust series of scholarly exchanges and events through our Zoom research workshops and virtual public symposia; and by our undergraduate students who have energized our remote classrooms and animated an array of online co-curricular activities and events in our various language programs.

While we applaud the exemplary energy and inventiveness that the Romance Languages and Literatures community is bringing to the challenges of the current moment, a look back at some of the stellar accomplishments from the 2019-2020 academic year can help inspire us all.

As the following pages so beautiful illustrate, it was indeed a banner year.

Our faculty members were awarded a stunning number of prestigious honors and prizes, while producing a cornucopia of publications in a range of languages from the leading presses and most prestigious venues in in the US, Europe, and Latin America. We are particularly proud of the department’s stunning successes in the University of Chicago’s annual teaching awards. In addition, our graduate students were awarded important honors and fellowships from within the University as well as from a host of national and international organizations of higher learning.

A cohort of 13 graduate students completed and defended their doctoral dissertations. We are delighted that eight of these rising scholars and teachers have been awarded prestigious postdoctoral fellowships at the University for 2020-2021 as MAPH or Humanities Teaching Fellows, while others have successfully moved on to teaching positions in the US and Europe.

Starring in the vibrant undergraduate class of 2020 were 20 RLL majors along with 32 minors.

Special congratulations go to our eight graduating students awarded BA Honors. Their BA honor thesis projects ranged in topic from the 1590 Northern Italian famine to contemporary protest movements in France and Chile, and their papers were awarded a dazzling host of prizes from within as well as from outside the University.

Finally, I urge you to enjoy the captivating images you’ll find here from the winners of the RLL annual photo contest. Along with the final catalogue of highlighted departmental events, these stunning photographs from Senegal, Catalonia, and Mexico bear witness to the broad international range and cultural diversity that define the mission of our department, and which we embrace all the more vigorously during these challenging times.

FACULTY ACHIEVEMENTS & HONORS Niall Atkinson was named Chair of the Department of Art History (starting 20202021).

Marie Berg, Céline Bordeaux, Irena Cajkova, and Lidwina van den Hout were promoted to full Instructional Professors.

The Working Group on Slavery and Visual Culture, coordinated by Larissa BrewerGarcía, Agnes Lugo-Ortiz, and Danielle Roper (in collaboration with Chris Taylor and Allison Nadia Field) received a 20202021 Neubauer Collegium Faculty Collaborative Fellowship.

Larissa Brewer-García was awarded the Woodrow Wilson Junior Faculty Career Enhancement Fellowship and a Franke Fellowship at the Franke Humanities Center for 2019-2020.

Frederick de Armas received a Provost's Annual Global Faculty Award for a collaborative project on "Aging, Rejuvenation and Environment in Chinese and European Early Modern Literature."

Daisy Delogu was awarded a fellowship from the American Council of Learned Societies for her project titled “The Political Pastoral: Shepherds, Sheep, and Wolves between Late Medieval France and Burgundy (1364-1461).”

Faculty Achievements & Honors

Alison James was promoted to the rank of full Professor. She also was also a member of an international research team awarded a grant from the French Agence nationale de recherche.

Robert Kendrick was made a Cavaliere della Repubblica Italiana and presented with the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic by the Italian Consul General in Chicago, in recognition of his contributions to the study of Italian music.

Ana Lima received a two-year grant from the Less Commonly Taught Languages Partnership, funded by the Mellon Foundation and housed at Michigan State University.

Agnes Lugo-Ortiz and Larissa BrewerGarcía have been asked to join the Executive Board of the Afro-Latin American Art Project, sponsored by the Harvard University Afro-Latin American Research Institute and the Getty Foundation.

Khalid Lyamlahy, previously a Provost’s Postdoctoral Fellow, was promoted to Assistant Professor of French and Francophone Studies.

Armando Maggi was named the Arthur and Joann Rasmussen Professor in Western Civilization.

FACULTY PUBLICATIONS Robert Morrissey and the ARTFL team received a National Endowment for the Humanities grant to develop a platform that will allow scholars to combine distant and close reading methods to discover relationships between texts and identify texts in collections for further study.

Victoria Saramago became a member of the executive committee of the Brazilian Studies Association and a member of the Delegate Assembly of the Modern Language Association.

Jennifer Scappettone will be a visiting professor at the Université Paris-Est as part of a three-year cycle of activities with Littératures, SAvoirs et Arts (LISAA), a laboratory devoted to the role of literature and poetry, in particular in urban life and urban studies.

TEACHING AWARDS

Bastien Craipain won the Wayne C. Booth Graduate Student Prize in Undergraduate Teaching.

“No one is ever alone when it comes to approaching a text—others have read it before you, and others will probably read it after you,” Craipain said. “So, when I am in class with my students, I try my best to help them understand that the best interpretation they can offer of a given text—or any sort of cultural artifact for that matter—is probably the one they had not thought about until they shared and discussed it with their peers."

Silvia Guslandi received the 2020 Francis X. Kinahan Award for Excellence in the Teaching of Advanced Academic Writing.

A student said, "Silvia was fantastic! She did I wonderful job leading and organizing our critiques each week, and gave great advice on our own papers. I thought her feedback was specific, actionable, and pertinent to the lecture material. I also appreciate how friendly and accessible she was throughout the course – I felt like I could always ask [for] help or advice on future assignments.”

Miguel Martínez was a recipient of the Llewellyn John and Harriet Manchester Quantrell Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching.

“Students often take courses in Spanish because they find it useful for their future careers,” Martínez says. “They want to be linguistically and culturally competent. That is a crucial part of what we do in our department. But it’s really satisfying when they also find beauty and power in the literary and cultural traditions that we teach.In the case of Latinx students, these are actually their own traditions, so they may be able to enjoy and learn from things they were not aware of.”

GRADUATE STUDENT ACHIEVEMENTS & HONORS Lizette Arellano won the 2020 Hesse Award from the Association for Hispanic Classical Theater for her paper, “‘Por no ver tan gran fealdad’: las écfrasis eróticas y el poder del espejo en El castigo sin venganza de Lope de Vega."

Eufemia Baldassarre, Isabela Fraga, Enrique Macari, and Brenna Rice became ABD. Eufemia Baldassarre was selected as 2020-2021 Urban Doctoral Fellow at the Mansueto Institute for Urban Innovation.

Ysé Bourdon was awarded a 2020 CLAS Tinker Field Research Grant.

Ryan Brown and Khouloud Gargouri received the 2019-2020 Morton & Elizabeth Backus Prize in French.

Cosette Bruhns received a 2019-2020 Cheryl Seaman Grant and will be a 20202021 MAPH Teaching Fellow.

Laura Colaneri received funding from the Mellon Foundation to participate in “The Archive: Theory, Form, Practice” seminar at the Newberry Library in fall 2019.

Bastien Craipain, Isaias Fanlo, Silvia Guslandi, Michele Kenfack, Chiara Nifosi, Elizabeth Tavella, and Jacqueline Victor will be 2020-2021 Humanities Teaching Fellows in RLL.

Graduate Student Achievements & Honors

Veerle Dierickx has joined CVO Groeipunt, an adult school in Belgium, as an Italian lecturer.

Anna Donko received a FLAS Fellowship from Tulane University to study at the Mayan Language Institute in summer 2020.

Isabela Fraga was awarded the 2019-2020 Joseph Gulsoy Short-Term Dissertation Grant and a 2020-2021 Humanities Division Dissertation Research Travel Grant.

Daniela Gutiérrez Flores was awarded a 2020 Universidad Complutense de Madrid/Erasmus+ Fellowship, and received funding to participate in “Eating through the Archives: Interdisciplinary Approaches to Early Modern Foodways” at the Folger Institute in December 2019. She is also a 2020 CHNY Scholar’s Grant recipient for research on "Heavenly Foods and Earthly Fires: Cooking and Spirituality in Colonial Latin America."

Michele Kenfack was named a 2020-2021 Lindsay Family Fellow in recognition of her outstanding teaching record.

Loriane Lafont received funding to participate in the 2020 Mellon Summer Institute in French Paleography at the Newberry Library.

Juan Diego Mariátegui was awarded the 2020-2021 Mellon Foundation-University of

Chicago Fellowship.

Completion

Maximilien Novak won a prize from Fondation Napoléon for his research on journalists, historians and the administration of public opinion under Napoléon Bonaparte.

Manuel Olmedo Gobante was awarded a 2019-2020 Cheryl Seaman Grant and accepted a tenure-track assistant professor position with the Department of World Languages, Literatures & Cultures at the University of Arkansas.

Filippo Petricca was awarded the 20192020 Rebecca West Dissertation Grant, a 2020 Humanities Division Dissertation Research Travel Grant, and 2020-2021 University of Chicago Collège de France Exchange Fellowship.

David Reher earned the College Writing Tutor Award for his commitment to tutoring students and assisting them in becoming more effective writers.

Medardo Rosario accepted the position of Visiting Assistant Professor at Florida International University.

Esther Van Dyke received the 2019-2020 Thomas Pavel Endowment Fund Award and 2020-2021 Provost’s Dissertation Completion Fellowship.

Featured presenters included Robert Morrissey, Larry Norman, Esther Van Dyke, and Peadar Kavanagh.

A Symposium on The Life of St. Teresa of Avila: A Biography by Carlos Eire | Oct. 24 This day-long symposium centered around Carlos Eire, Professor of History and Religious Studies at Yale, and his recent monograph, The Life of St. Teresa of Avila. The participants assessed the impact of the saint's writings on Christian spirituality over five centuries and traced its influence among readers as diverse as mystics, philosophers, artists, psychoanalysts, and neurologists.

"Not in Search of Messages": A Primo Levi Study Day | Oct. 28-30 To commemorate Primo Levi's 100th birthday, which took place in the summer of 2019, Philippe Mesnard, Professor of Comparative Literature at the Université Blaise Pascal, delivered a keynote lecture titled, "The Truth of the Witness According to Primo Levi." The lecture was followed by a group of scholars from a wide range of fields, including Anthropology, Black Studies, Genocide Studies, Jewish History, and Comparative Literature, for a conversation about the enduring relevance of Levi’s writing.
