or some, it’s a hobby to be taken seriously. For others, it’s just plane fun (pardon the pun). Either way, “planespotting” is a premier activity around Los Angeles International Airport. Whether you’re looking to log the tail numbers of planes and add them to your collection or your inner child just marvels at how those huge things get off the ground, here are some of the area’s best spots to see LAX’s aircraft ffrom every angle imaginable.

Top of the Radisson

TOP OF THE RADISSON 6225 W. Century Boulevard 866.949.1197 Located atop the Radisson Hotel LAX, this spectacular meeting room offers some of the best views of planes landing at the airport. From the unique eye-level perspective, you can see each aircraft coming in for a landing. The view is especially attractive at night. Top of the Radisson is not open to the public but is available for rent for parties and special events.

Dockweiler State Beach

DOCKWEILER BEACH 12501 Vista Del Mar Dockweiler State Beach features a three-mile-long shoreline with a picnic area and concession stand. The combination of beach barbecues (Dockweiler is one of the few beaches that allow bonﬁres) against a backdrop of heavily laden 747 and A380 aircraft at takeoff thrust, powering their way over the Paciﬁc Ocean, makes for an interesting experience.

“IN-N-OUT” PARK Across the street from In-N-Out Burger at 9149 S. Sepulveda Blvd. This little park owned by Los Angeles World Airports makes for the perfect spot to watch planes as they land on LAX’s northernmost runway. Few other locations allow you to get as close to landing planes as this. You’re so close, you can almost wink at the pilot!

“They will be working in a job that doesn’t even exist today.” The LAX coastal area has become the cradle of the creative economy and is home to Otis College of Art and Design and Loyola Marymount University – two prestigious schools that are educating students so they can succeed in an industry that creates one out of every six jobs in the region and continues to grow.

A LOOK AT THE CRADLE OF THE CREATIVE ECONOMY ...

The LAX coastal area is fortunate to have not one, but two of the driving force institutions leading the way forward in what has recently been branded as the “creative economy.” While Silicon Valley may be considered the cradle of the internet industry, with Otis College of Art and Design and Loyola Marymount University in its back yard, the LAX coastal area certainly is the center of L.A.’s creative economy. “Two decades ago, graduates could depend upon one, two, maybe, three jobs to last them a lifetime,” said Otis President Samuel Hoi. “Today’s graduates, they are going to step into a future where within seven to ten years after graduation, they will be working in a job that doesn’t even exist today. We teach them to reinvent themselves time after time.” Indeed, 20 years ago no one had ever heard of an iPad, few conceived of hybrid automobile engines and there were no children begging for PlayStations for their birthdays. Hoi said the value of training students to embrace the creative economy goes far beyond their contributions in the traditional creative fields of technology, design and art. In fact, creative thinkers are becoming more and more valued in every aspect of business. “Twenty years ago, artists and designers thought about their professional applications in terms of publishing books or directing films,” he said. “Nowadays, increasingly, they are called upon to be innovative thinkers and collaborators with people outside of their field to create industrial and social solutions.” “Creativity is increasingly important today

– first, for the pure economic impact of the creative industry, but also the creative thinking is increasingly valuable as well, not just for corporations but for community building and society in general. So, we are taking advantage of the need to prepare the next generation of artists and designers who can use art and design to spur the economy.” A stone’s throw away at Loyola Marymount University, the school is celebrating 100 years of providing students with a high-quality Jesuit education. Today, that education includes a major focus on fields that lead the creative economy. LMU’s College of Communications and Fine Arts and its School of Film and Television churn out some of the most creative minds in the country. But, like Hoi, LMU President David Burcham said the school’s goal is more than just inspiring creativity. “Los Angeles is a world-class city,” Burcham said. “As the major Catholic university in the city, we have both a great advantage and an obligation to be the best we can be. Our mission is to educate the whole person, to help students grow intellectually, socially and spiritually with a commitment to the service of faith and the promotion of justice. That is why students and families decide to come here, and we have to make certain that we work hard every day to fulfill that mission.” A cornerstone of Burcham’s young tenure at the helm of the university is to assure that all

students continue LMU’s tradition of service to the community, and that commitment extends to creative endeavors as well. The LMU ARTsmart program provides underserved young people with access to an excellent visual arts education. While the visual arts have been cut from most school curricula, ARTsmart brings this basic need back into the classroom. Each semester, more than 50 student volunteers teach ﬁne arts lessons to kindergarten through eighth graders at St. Gerard Majella School in Los Angeles, volunteering thousands of hours and helping young students create more than 3,000 pieces of art. Mentors, who come from a variety of backgrounds and disciplines – ﬁne arts, graphic design, multimedia arts, art history, animation and liberal studies – work in teams, each bringing his or her own interests into the classroom. Together, they develop lesson plans and lead the classes in projects, which incorporate formal art issues, art history, visual culture and standards-based education. Ultimately, the goal of ARTsmart is to create an appetite for exploration and visual literacy. These creative thinking skills will be critical as those elementary school students grow up and become the leaders of tomorrow. The creative economy is undeniably important to the region’s economic growth. About 835,000 employees work directly or indirectly in the creative economy of Los Angeles and Orange Counties. County-based ﬁrms in the creative economy earned an estimated $113 billion in revenues during 2009. California and local governments received an estimated $4.6 billion in taxes tied to these activities. In fact, ffollowing tourism and hospitality, the creative economy is the second largest employer in Los Angeles County. Almost one in every six jobs in the Los Angeles area is connected to the creative economy, and the sector is only expected to grow. “People with more creative thinking are needed now in a world where new paradigm shifts in corporate structures, business models and social problem-solution is called for,” Hoi said. “Our school would like to prepare graduates for this new reality and this new need in the world.” Good design and creative thinking translate directly to the bottom line for companies of all kinds. “In the simplest way, design is becoming more important as a competitive edge in commerce,” Hoi said. “As you can see from Apple’s iPods to the [Volkswagen] Beatle, good design with good economics and, increasingly, good sustainability value, are much more embraced by the consumer. Secondly, in a much more subtle way, how designers think about problems, how they research, how they come up with creative options and narrow down strategically to the most viable and smart solution, I think that is the kind of creative thinking that is increasingly valued by businesses.” In these otherwise challenging economic times, the businesses and individuals involved in producing cultural, artistic and design goods and services are leading the way forward for the Los Angeles area. The monumental economic force of the creative industries in Southern California is vital to the future of our region. Creativity isn’t so easily outsourced, and content creation is not easily replaced by a machine. The Los Angeles area is unique, a fertile ground for creative ideas and new thought. Here, ideas are constantly given form and brought to life by creative people. The LAX Coastal Area Chamber of Commerce embraces this sector of the economy and supports its growth because here, creativity means serious business. ■

WHY GO: Spanish for “Beach of the King,” Playa del Rey is a

quaint beachside community where ﬂip-ﬂops and swim trunks are the local uniform. Home to Los Angeles Lakers owner Jerry Buss and other celebrities and athletes, the area boasts a nostaligic village area with shops and restaurants as well as great beaches and even a lagoon where kids can feed the ducks. Stay at The Inn at Playa del Rey, a romantic bed and breakfast overlooking the wetlands; and spend the day strolling along the bike path that hugs the sand and the sea.

Size Doesn’t Matter

Walk up to the door at The Harbor Room, close your eyes... take eight steps forward... you’ve now just left the place. Yup, The Harbor Room really is just that small. In fact, this Playa del Rey haunt is widely recognized as the smallest bar in Los Angeles. But size doesn’t matter – the drinks are plentiful, the jukebox is stocked and the staff is friendly and efﬁcient. Heck, they should be, as some of the bar staff has been there for more than three decades! The Harbor Room is located at 195 Culver Boulevard (310.821.6550). The Harbor Room is cash only, but there’s an ATM if you forget.

Wetlands Tours

Habitats at the Ballona Wetlands are a complex mosaic resulting from many years of floodplain alteration and filling of the historical wetlands, yet many native species and communities still thrive. Whether the habitat is estuarine, freshwater, seasonally flooded, riparian, or upland, many wildlife species, especially birds, can be seen by visitors. Friends of Ballona Wetlands offers an array of highly informative, inspiring wetlands guided tours. The organization books free private tours for groups of eight or more individuals, as well as regularly-scheduled weekend tours for other visitors. Most of these special tours include hands-on dunes restoration work. You can choose an interpretive tour of the wetlands and dunes, an introduction to the freshwater marsh, a hands-on restoration activity, or perhaps partner to create an in-depth program involving multiple visits to Ballona. In 2011, Playa Vista will hold 13 Concerts in the Park at either Concert Park or the new Central Park Bandshell, each featuring a great performer or band, dancing and fun. Sprucing up the Goose into the Hercules Campus Following the U.S. entrance into World War II in 1941, the U.S. government commissioned the Hughes Aircraft Company, located at what is now Playa Vista, to build a large flying boat capable of carrying men and materials over long distances. Designed and built by aviation legend Howard Hughes with laminated birch and spruce, the massive wooden aircraft – nicknamed the “Spruce Goose” – had a wingspan longer than a football field and was designed to carry more than 700 men to battle. Development of the Spruce Goose cost a phenomenal $23 million and took so long that the war had ended by the time of its completion in 1946. While the Goose is now housed in Oregon, the historic 315,000-squarefoot hangar where it was built has been preserved at The Campus at Playa Vista, where it has served as a sound stage for television production and such films as “Titanic,” “World Trade Center” and “Transformers 3.” Soon, Hughes’ former headquarters and the area including the hangar will be transformed into creative space for entertainment, media and technology companies, dubbed the Hercules Campus (www.herculescampus.com). As part of the historic preservation and renovation, the Spruce Goose hangar will be upgraded with state-of-the-art sound stages.

Leadership Academy is a course designed to develop leadership qualities and encourage individuals to take more active roles in the community at-large. The Academy consists of seven one-day courses intended to familiarize business leaders with information regarding the history/land use of the area, and, more specifically, the inner workings of LAX, Marina Harbor, and Los Angeles City/County Government. The program provides participants the opportunity to meet and interact with political leaders at the federal, state and local levels. The course curriculum includes information on economic development, communication styles and tactics, government policy and procedure and civic involvement. Graduates of the Academy program receive four semester units of Professional Development Credit from Loyola Marymount University, as well as a certificate in Leadership Training from LMU Extension. Through your involvement in Leadership Academy, you will not only acquire insight into the LAX coastal community, but you will also gain important contacts and build networks that may be beneficial to you and your company in the near future. Networking at Night Mixers More than 1,200 people attend the Chamber’s Networking at Night Mixers each year. Held monthly, these events enable members and non-members to mingle and build business relationships in informal and relaxed settings. Speed Networking Sit across the table from other Chamber members for several minutes apiece in a unique one-on-one opportunity to network and make connections. Young Professionals These upwardly mobile members of our business community get together for social events, community service projects and networking opportunities as they solidify their place as the Chamber’s rising generation of leaders.

INFLUENCE

As the voice of business in the region, the Chamber works closely with members to develop and advance policy positions that foster economic growth and improve quality of life. It does so by connecting members with lawmakers face-to-face to discuss critical issues and actively engaging our elected officials to promote a pro-business agenda. Government Affairs Breakfast Briefings (GABBs) These gatherings enable members to interact directly with the elected officials, policy makers and department heads that represent our area. The Chamber limits attendance at GABBs so that members get the “face time” they need to express their views and engage in discussions with lawmakers and other key leaders that might otherwise be inaccessible.

Public Policy Committee This group helps shape the Chamber’s overall advocacy agenda. With regular reports from lawmakers’ representatives and on-going analysis of critical legislation facing the business community, Public Policy is an opportunity for members to roll up their sleeves, dig into the issues of the day and position the Chamber to take a leadership role in ﬁghting for the interests of local businesses.
