DICK TRAMMEL | FEBRUARY 2, 2019 The Rogers-Lowell Area Chamber of Commerce Annual Celebration of Business & Community (formerly the Annual Banquet) is an annual gathering of 1,000+ Northwest Arkansas business leaders who come together to celebrate business accomplishments and community excellence for the previous year. It’s the highlight event of the year for Chamber members, providing a fun way to socialize and network with peers.

This year, the event honors Mr. Dick Trammel’s life achievements, contributions to our community and well-deserved retirement.

NORTHWEST ARKANSAS SPRING JOB FAIR | MAY 8, 2019 NORTHWEST ARKANSAS FALL JOB FAIR | OCTOBER 2, 2019 The Chamber hosts two job fairs for Northwest Arkansas in 2019 – these are the largest and longest running job fairs in the region.

Job fairs provide local business and industry an opportunity to connect with local and regional job seekers, especially important as economic development continues to build momentum and more jobs are created for the workforce. These job fairs typically attract 60+ exhibitors and 300-500 job seekers. The spring event is held at the Frisco Station Mall in Rogers from on May 8 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Each fall employers get a head start on hiring for the holidays at the fall event also held at the Frisco Station Mall in Rogers from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on October 2.

CHAMBER GOLF TOURNAMENT | MAY 31, 2019 The annual Chamber Golf Tournament is held at beautiful Shadow Valley Country Club in Rogers. This four-person scramble offers Chamber

members an opportunity to golf together and compete for prizes while enjoying businessbuilding networking with players from other teams. Some members invite their customers to play with them as a gesture of thanks while others choose to bring employees as a reward and show of appreciation. Prizes are awarded for top finishing teams and for individual winners of the longest drive, closet-to-the-pin and putting contests. Each golfer receives complimentary snacks and beverages, breakfast (morning tee time), lunch and entry into the 19th Hole Party where prizes are awarded.

FEBRUARY 2, 2019

RLACC SPORTING CLAYS CLASSIC | DATE TBA (OCTOBER 2019) This 3rd annual event offers members a unique and fun opportunity to “golf with a shotgun” and network with other business professionals “on the range” at Gunsmoke Sporting Clays in Garfield.

The sporting clays event features a variety of shooting stations, each station presenting a different challenge for shooters. Some clay pigeons are launched high into the air, some parallel to the machine, and some bounce across the ground to test the shooter’s aim. Shooters receive continental breakfast, lunch, snacks, ammo, goodie bags and beverages. Experienced and novice shooters alike are encouraged to attend and bring colleagues, clients, family and friends out for a fun day of clay shooting. There are two flight times: 9:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.

Business-to-Business (B2B) quarterly events (four luncheons in 2019) enable business representatives to advertise, sell and "speed network" with other businesses all in one networking event. Here’s how it works. Six people are seated at a table and each participant has two minutes to promote his/her products and services. Participants are then rotated to other tables for additional networking. Networkers get the most out of the event by bringing brochures, business cards, product samples and promotional items to hand out or display at their table.

ustle In Heels – LADIES LEAD NWA (HIH) celebrated a successful first year on November 27 with an anniversary party at Metro Appliances & More in Lowell. Guests enjoyed beverages from Ozark Beer Company and food from Tacos 4 Life.

This new program is an initiative of the Rogers-Lowell Area Chamber of Commerce dedicated to empowering, educating, and connecting women with a modern approach to professional and business development.

All women in business are encouraged to attend HIH programs whether they work in a professional office environment or run a machine in a manufacturing facility. Content and activities are designed so that all women may participate.

The HIH committee is currently asking for feedback on the program and suggestions for 2019 via an online survey. If you would like to participate, contact the Rogers-Lowell Area Chamber of Commerce SVP of Economic Development, Steve Cox, at Steve@RogersLowell. com to request a link to the survey.

The group is also looking for committee members and sponsors for 2019.

Introducing the 2019 Small Business Council

he Small Business Council is a committee of the Rogers-Lowell Area Chamber of Commerce and was created to be the voice of the small business community and to provide guidance to the Rogers-Lowell Area Chamber of Commerce on the needs of the small business community.

The Council is made up of Chamber members who own, work for, or actively serve small businesses throughout Northwest Arkansas. Some of the roles of the Council include selecting an Outstanding Small Business of the Quarter, selecting seminar topics for Chamber University and conducting Chamber Tutorials.

Preparing Students for Careers in Automotive Industries

T

he Rogers Public Schools (RPS) Automotive Service Technology program is offered to 9th-12th grade students. This program is designed to help prepare students for careers within a broad spectrum of automotive industries including automotive service, maintenance, collision and repair, large equipment service and diesel technicians. Student interest and enrollment in the program continues to increase each year.

The program is in the RPS Career Center and includes a multi-bay shop area with four types of lifts, various makes and models of training vehicles, diagnostic trainers and industry standard equipment. To accommodate the growing demand for the program, RPS students attend the automotive classes at both the RPS Career Center and Northwest Technical Institute.

CURRICULUM AND CERTIFICATION The program is based on the industry

recognized National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation (NATEF) curriculum and the Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) industry certifications. Through both the rigorous academic curriculum and the performancebased ASE certification programs, students participating in the automotive service program gain knowledge, skills and credentials that will prepare them for successful careers within the automotive and related industries.

Industry partnerships with local companies is an important part of the Automotive Service Technology program. Mr. Akehurst and his students are interested in learning more about local companies and career opportunities within each company. Tours of local facilities, classroom presentation, information about entry-level job opportunities, assistance with practicing interviews and employability skills are a few examples of opportunities for local companies to partner with the Rogers Public Schools automotive program.

A collaborative partnership between education and industry is essential building a skilled workforce for Northwest Arkansas and bright futures for the students. Local companies and individuals that are interested in learning more about partnership opportunities are encouraged to contact Mr. Jon Akehurst at (479) 631-3579.

Daisy Outdoor Products, headquartered in Rogers, has conducted the oldest and largest national 5-meter BB gun match for more than 50 years. The event will have more than 1,000 attendees at the John Q. Hammons Convention Center.

SHEPHERD’S CHAPEL CONFERENCE MARCH 30-31, 2019 Headquartered in Gravette, Shepherd’s Chapel was founded in 1955. The conference is held 14 days after the Equinox each year. The group has over 3,500 attendees.

Hobbs State Park Announces Dates for Eagle Watch Cruises on Beaver Lake January & February | 2019 – Hobbs State Park has offered eagle watch tours on Beaver Lake for nine years. Every cruise is different. You never know what wildlife you will see.

According to Chris Pistole, the newest Hobbs State Park interpreter, “It’s always great to be out on the water, and then to see the wildlife, too, adds special meaning to each cruise. We always expect to see Bald Eagles, but don’t forget about the beautiful osprey, the always-hungry great blue herons, the red- tailed hawks, the ducks, the kingfishers, deer, turtles, and the list goes on. No one will ever be disappointed on our eagle tours.”

Pistole added, “We only take 18 guests at a time, so it’s important that

folks call the park in a timely manner to ensure that their names get on the boarding lists.”

RHS SENIOR PROJECT STUDIES ART, MUSIC & ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT IN DOWNTOWN ROGERS

November & December | 2018 – Senior students from Rogers High School (RHS) partnered with the Rogers-Lowell Area Chamber of Commerce to explore existing and potential relationships between art and music and economic development late last year.

Through a Senior Project initiative that paired up students and businesses, the student team identified ways to help promote and position Downtown Rogers as an emerging music and arts destination.

For the first phase of the project in November, students conducted a walking tour of businesses that support art and music, met with owners and gathered information while learning where art and music happen in Downtown Rogers.

Students wrapped up the second phase of the project on November 29 in a meet and greet with area business owners and local media at the Rogers Experimental House.

n early December, a delegation representing manufacturers, small business owners, the World Trade Center Arkansas, and Chambers of Commerce from across Arkansas, travelled to Washington, D.C., to discuss the effects of current trade and tariff issues on our state’s economy. These meetings, organized by the Government Affairs Division of the Rogers-Lowell Area Chamber of Commerce, were held with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, representatives of major NWA employers, the governments of Canada and Mexico, and with the members of our federal delegation.

TRADE WARS AND TARIFFS – SO, WHAT’S THE ISSUE? Current trade policies advocated by the administration have become problematic for major employers located in Arkansas. Tariffs imposed on imports of steel and aluminum from certain countries have been a major issue for Bekaert, a Belgian wire manufacturer with major operations located in Rogers. As a result, a previously announced 100 + new jobs and a $30 million expansion for the Bekaert facility in Rogers is currently on hold. Retaliatory tariffs imposed by other countries on U.S. agricultural products have also affected the ability of Tyson and other agriculture producers to access

THE NEW USMCA TRADE AGREEMENT – WHAT IT MEANS FOR ARKANSAS Meetings to discuss the new USMCA Trade Agreement were held at the Canadian Embassy.

Consulate representatives from both Mexico and Canada, Arkansas’s two largest trading partners, briefed our delegation on the importance of maintaining our trading relationships. Canada is Arkansas’s number-one customer, with more than $225 million in annual exports. A total of 66,600 jobs in Arkansas also depend on trade and investment with Canada. Mexico is responsible for almost $93 million in annual total exports from Arkansas. Officials from both governments expressed hope for the ultimate approval of the new trade agreement by the respective legislative bodies in each country. However, it was specifically pointed out that the Section 232 tariffs, imposed by the U.S. on steel and aluminum imports from Canada and Mexico, pose serious problems for the approval process.

Section 232 refers to the United States Code that gives the President the authority to impose tariffs based on national security.

CONGRESSMAN WOMACK LEADING THE CHARGE The Rogers-Lowell Area Chamber of Commerce has been working with Congressman Steve Womack since 2017 on the effects of Section 232 steel and aluminum tariffs on companies located in our region and across the state. Congressman Womack has also been

very instrumental in advancing this issue before the Administration and with his colleagues in Congress over the past year. In fact, he hosted a meeting that was held in the House Budget Committee Chamber with Senators Boozman and Cotton, and Congressmen Hill and Westerman in attendance, all of whom also expressed their support for approval of the USMCA, and specifically for the removal of the Section 232 tariffs on steel and aluminum.

HOW CAN YOU HELP WITH THIS ISSUE? There was a common thread running through all the meetings attended by our delegation on this trip. We were specifically asked to have our members and business owners become more involved by sharing their testimonials on how the current trade policies are negatively affecting their businesses. Contact the members of Congress representing both sides of the aisle. Let them know that you work with and employ people who live and vote in the communities they represent, and that you and other constituents are paying attention to how they handle these important issues dealing with trade.
