Women of Color magazine receives hundreds of nominations every year for the Women of Color STEM Conference awards. In 2023, the magazine discovered that nearly 90 percent of the nominees for these awards work in some of the best career options and employment opportunities as per LinkedIn.

These job categories include data analysis, data science, cyber security, renewable energy, software development, sustainability, virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) development, e-commerce, digital marketing, robotics, artificial intelligence (AI), digital media content creation, financial management, and business management analysis.

Our “40 under 40” list features professionals who are emerging leaders, innovators, and changemakers making significant strides in various sectors. They are leading Technology All-Stars and Rising Stars who have demonstrated excellence in the workplace by acquiring new skills, embracing change, and contributing to technological advancements. Many of these individuals work in the above job categories.

The magazine also presents a yearly “Women to Watch” list, highlighting top STEM professionals for their innovation and societal impact.

The list includes Aruna Miller, the 10th lieutenant governor of Maryland. She is the first woman of color and immigrant elected to statewide office in Maryland. Born in Andhra Pradesh, India, Miller and her family immigrated to the United States when she was 7. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering from the Missouri University of Science and Technology. As a civil and transportation engineer in Montgomery County’s Department of Transportation, Miller worked to improve public safety and alleviate traffic by creating equitable access to transportation throughout the county.

Maj. Gen. Janeen L. Birckhead is the 31st adjutant general of the Maryland National Guard. In this capacity, Birckhead is an advisor to the governor of Maryland. She is responsible for leading a force of over 6,300 soldiers, airmen, and federal and state employees responsible for providing a relevant and capable force ready to fight, protect, defend, and prevail against all threats in a multidomain environment.

Stephanie C. Hill, executive vice president at Lockheed Martin, was honored with the 2023 Vice Admiral Samuel L. Gravely Jr. Leadership Award by the National Museum of the Surface Navy (NMSN) for her significant contributions to the mission success of the U.S. Navy. She was chosen for her distinguished career in the defense industry and uplifting others. Hill currently leads Rotary and Mission Systems (RMS), one of Lockheed Martin’s business areas that generates over $16 billion in revenue and employs over 35,000 people worldwide. She was also the Women of Color Career Achievement Award winner.

Cirrus Logic nominated DUY-LOAN T. LE as a board director at its 2023 Annual Meeting. Le spent 35 years at Texas Instruments, overseeing global R&D centers, foundries, and OSAT partnerships. She has earned 24 patents and serves on multiple boards. John Forsyth, president and CEO of Cirrus Logic, praised her technical expertise in semiconductor manufacturing and chip design. Cirrus Logic develops low-power, high-precision, mixed-signal processing solutions

for mobile and consumer applications. Le has been inducted into the Women in Technology and Asian Halls of Fame. She was honored as Technologist of the Year in 2002.

DENISE GRAY, a wellknown automotive executive with four decades of experience, has joined Liminal as a strategic advisor. Liminal is a leading battery manufacturing intelligence company that aims to promote global electric vehicle adoption. Gray is best known for her work on the Chevy Volt battery program during her 30-year tenure at General Motors. She most recently served as North American Head of External Affairs and Government Relations for lithium-ion battery producer LG Energy Solution. In 2017, she was named Technologist of the Year. In 2019 she received the U.S. Department of Energy C3E Lifetime Achievement Award, and she was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 2022.

DR. PAMELA MCCAULEY was appointed as the dean of the School of Engineering at Widener University in the summer of 2023. She came to Widener after serving as the associate dean for academic programs, diversity, equity, and inclusion in the Wilson College of Textiles at North Carolina State University in 2020. McCauley is an industrial engineer who has contributed significantly to research in fuzzy set theory-based mathematical models, human engineering, ergonomics, and biomechanics. She has also worked extensively in engineering and women’s leadership in STEM. McCauley served as a professor at the University of Central Florida and a visiting associate professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She is also the president at T-STEM Inc. and was named Technologist of the Year in 2019.

ALICIA BOLER DAVIS, CEO of Alto Pharmacy, has been elected JPMorgan Chase’s director, effective March 20, 2023. Previously, she was senior vice president at Amazon, leading global customer fulfillment operations, robotics, technology, and sustainability initiatives. Davis also worked at General Motors for nearly 25 years, where

she became executive vice president of global manufacturing and labor relations. She has been recognized with several awards, including being named one of Fortune’s Most Powerful Women in 2020 and 2021. In 2014, she was named Technologist of the Year.

Rashmi Prasad: A Trailblazer in Engineering and Beyond

Rashmi Prasad is thriving in her professional journey, and in mentoring others. As a distinguished staff research scientist at General Motors, Prasad stands as a paragon of innovation and inspiration. Her journey, marked by a relentless pursuit of knowledge and a passion for engineering, offers a compelling narrative for aspiring professionals, especially women in STEM.

Roots of Inspiration

Prasad’s path in STEM was influenced by her family background. With a civil engineer father and an older sister in engineering, she naturally gravitated toward the field. However, her professional journey wasn’t just about following in familial footsteps; it was about finding her own passion and purpose.

The Turning Point

After completing her bachelor’s degree and working for two years, Prasad felt a yearning for something more fulfilling. Women in STEM Today

Did you know that the number of women in the U.S. workforce has been increasing since World War II?

In 2016, 56.8% of all women participated in the labor force.

Women’s labor force participation was 57.4 percent in 2019, up from 57.1 percent in 2018.1

Although women represented more than half of workers in professional occupations in 2019, the percentage of women in specific occupations varied.

For instance, only 18.7 percent of software developers and 27.6 percent of chief executives were women, while 88.9 percent of registered nurses, 80.5 percent of elementary and middle school teachers, and 61.7 percent of accountants and auditors were women. Women represented only 11 percent of engineers.

In 2021, about 24 percent of people aged 18 to 74 in the workforce were employed in STEM occupations. Men (29 percent) were more likely to work in STEM than women (18 percent).

It’s great to see that the number of women in the STEM workforce grew faster than men between 2011 and 2021. Women’s share of the STEM workforce increased by 31 percent, from 9.4 million to 12.3 million, while men’s share increased by 15 percent, from 19.7 million to 22.6 million. In 2021, 65 percent of those employed in STEM occupations were men, and 35 percent were women.

Lastly, the number of science and engineering degrees earned by women increased at all degree levels between 2011 and 2020. Women earned half of science and engineering bachelor’s degrees, with social and behavioral sciences and agricultural and biological sciences having the highest percentages (66 percent and 64 percent, respectively) of women earning bachelor’s degrees in these fields.

However, women made up only 26 percent of bachelor’s degrees in mathematics and computer sciences and 24 percent in engineering. Similar differences between men and women were observed at the master’s and doctoral degree levels in these fields.

As of February 2021, 56 percent of women were in the labor force.

As a result of this large increase in the number of working women, the share of the labor force made up of women grew from 29 percent in 1948 to 47 percent in 2020.

Former Educator Driven to Enrich Youth Through STEAM

Free programs don’t skimp on quality

Anike Sakariyawo’s enthusiasm and commitment to her life’s work is apparent in a single conversation. She articulates her vision of exposing children to the world of science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM) in rapid-fire fashion and with compelling passion about its potential impact on youth.

Sakariyawo is the founder and executive director of SEEK Foundation, Inc. (Seeking Education Empowers Knowledge), an organization that provides a broad range of STEAM activities and programs to children as young as 5 years old. Coding clubs, robotics competitions, and youth-led workshops are a few of the activities in which children in SEEK programs are engaged.

“I know that this is where God placed me,” said Sakariyawo. “This is the purpose of my life. I love what I do.”

Founded in 2012, SEEK reaches approximately 1,500 children in Miami, 500 children in Atlanta, and 100 youth in the recently launched program in Washington, D.C. Some programs are presented in an after-school format, while others are held as clubs, summer camps, or workshops. This summer, a student-led youth summit was held involving K-12 student vendors demonstrating and teaching such specialties as esports, how to make temporary hair dye, and how to operate an artificial

intelligence robot by cell phone.

All of SEEK’s programs for youth are free, and Sakariyawo emphasizes that just because there’s no cost to children and their families doesn’t mean the programs are of inferior quality.

“We want to make STEAM accessible, quality engagement,” she said, adding that her programs are rigorous.

Sakariyawo, a former educator who taught science for 10 to 15 years and worked with children with disabilities, was inspired in her work by her autistic sister. She said she saw extreme shortcomings in the educational system, including how inadequate equipment and programs put many children at a disadvantage. She knew there was a better way.

“OUR CHILDREN NEED ACCESS TO REAL-LIFE STEM/STEAM EQUIPMENT THAT WILL ALLOW THEM TO COMPETE IN A WORLD THAT IS CONSTANTLY CHANGING WITH TECHNOLOGY,” SAID SAKARIYAWO.

SEEK’s programs are founded on three pillars: education, health and fitness, and community involvement.

Asked why she includes teaching children as young as 5, she said they are “spongelike” and absorb information quickly.

“They are more likely to take risks…they are more curious,” she said. “These kids were born with a cellphone in their hands. They are more promising when they are young. They are more eager.”

She said the youngest children in SEEK’s programs are highly enthusiastic about learning something new and are not jaded like high schoolers.

“We have elementary kids doing workshops, digital literacy for parents and seniors. We train elementary students to be teachers,” she said.

Sakariyawo sees a ripple effect when young people gain STEAM knowledge. They develop critical thinking skills and become comfortable with public speaking.

“When you impact the child, you impact the parent,”

she said.

Building SEEK into an organization serving communities across two states and the District of Columbia has not come without challenges. She cited funding as one area that has required plenty of hard work and creative thinking, adding “especially being a woman of color.” She has had to exhaust her personal financial reserves.

“Funding has always been an issue,” she said. “It’s like punching a wall. You know you have to keep punching to get through to the other side.”

She stressed that while securing grants can be a blessing, the reality is that often the reimbursement from grant funds takes months.

SEEK operates with a core team of 10–12 program managers, instructors, and staff, but during the summer when the organization’s partnership programs are in full force, the team increases to 28.

And Sakariyawo’s endeavors have caught the attention of other leaders. She’s in the rare position of being named BEYA’s 2023 recipient of a Community Service Award as well as a 2023 Women of Color Visionary Award honoree.

Sakariyawo takes education as seriously for herself as she does for others.

The graduate of Bethune Cookman University and Cambridge College with bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education and general science is now pursuing a Ph.D. in engineering and computing at Florida International University.

She views the work of SEEK as a lifetime commitment.

Sakariyawo said young children absorb information quickly.

In this STEM City USA Healthy Doses series, I explore what I believe is one of life’s most rewarding journeys—self-actualization. It’s a topic I hold dear, and I want to share my insights with you in hopes of illuminating your path to personal fulfillment and authenticity.

Understanding Self-Actualization

For me, self-actualization is about realizing your fullest potential. It’s finding that sweet spot where your actions and choices align seamlessly with your deepest desires and aspirations. This journey isn’t about conforming to what others expect of you, but rather about discovering and embracing your unique path.

Embracing Your Unique Journey

I often remind myself and others: Don’t compare your journey to anyone else’s. Your path, with all its unique twists and turns, is beautiful and invaluable. Each of us has our own narrative, filled with personal triumphs and challenges that shape who we are.

Traits of the Self-Actualized

In my experience, key traits of self-actualization include self-acceptance, effective problem-solving, and a realistic outlook on life. Cultivating independence, spontaneity, and a joy for life’s journey are also essential. These aren’t just goals but markers along the path to finding your true self.

Facing Modern Life’s Challenges

Today’s world, with its myriad pressures and constant digital bombardment, can make this journey challenging. I always advise staying rooted in your inner self amid these external influences. Remember, your inner compass is your true guide.

Practical Steps on Your Path

Here are some steps I’ve found crucial in my own journey, which I believe can guide you too:

1. Celebrate Your Individuality:

Avoid the trap of comparison. Your journey is uniquely yours.

2. Know and Accept Yourself: Embrace both your strengths and weaknesses; they define you.

3. Integrity in Decision Making: Let your true motives guide your choices.

4. Learn from Life: Every experience, whether joyous or challenging, is a lesson in disguise.

5. Trust in Your Capabilities: Believe in yourself and make choices that reflect who you really are.

6. Never Stop Growing: Life is an endless learning experience. Embrace it fully.

The Beauty of the Journey

As a woman, I see this journey not just as a personal quest but as an inspiration for others. In a constantly evolving world, standing firm in your truth is both powerful and revolutionary.

I always remind myself and others: The true beauty of life lies in the journey, not the destination. Be compassionate to yourself and those around you as you walk this path. I hope my words can be a compass for you as you navigate your own complex but beautiful journey to selffulfillment. 

As our world increasingly relies on the digital realm, the risk of deepening these inequalities grows.

Costa Checa’s initiative, Laboratoria, directly addresses these challenges. An Abie Award Winner, she was recognized for providing women in Latin America with coding education and tech skills. Laboratoria is not just closing the gender gap in tech employment but also challenging the broader socioeconomic barriers that women face. The organization’s impressive track record of training over 2,400 women and achieving an 85 percent job placement rate in tech roles is a testament to its effectiveness.

More than just technical training, Laboratoria’s approach involves shattering stereotypes, fostering self-belief, and promoting leadership among women in technology. This holistic model of empowerment is crucial for addressing the layered challenges women face in the tech industry and the wider societal context.

Costa Checa’s work with Laboratoria serves as a beacon of hope and a model for addressing the global issue of gender inequality in technology and innovation. Her efforts demonstrate that with targeted interventions, women can not only participate in but also lead and transform the tech world, contributing to a more equitable and diverse industry. 

ACCORDING TO THE UNITED NATIONS 67TH COMMISSION ON WOMEN, DESPITE THEIR SIGNIFICANT CONTRIBUTIONS TO INNOVATION, WOMEN AND GIRLS ARE STARKLY UNDERREPRESENTED IN STEM FIELDS. THEY CONSTITUTE ONLY 35 PERCENT OF STUDENTS IN STEM EDUCATION AND HOLD LESS THAN ONE-THIRD OF ROLES IN THE TECHNOLOGY SECTOR. THE GAP IS EVEN MORE PRONOUNCED IN CUTTING-EDGE FIELDS LIKE ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE , WHERE WOMEN REPRESENT A MERE 22 PERCENT OF THE WORKFORCE.

In a world where women’s achievements often fly under the radar, it’s imperative to illuminate the accomplishments of those who have defied the odds, shattered glass ceilings, and blazed trails for generations to come. Welcome to Women of Color magazine’s annual Women of the Year feature—a celebration of resilience, brilliance, and unwavering dedication.

In a time where the word “hero” is often bandied about, we bring you 6 remarkable women who have truly earned the title. They have made their mark in diverse fields, from the cuttingedge realm of artificial intelligence to social justice. They have left an indelible mark on their professions and communities, reminding us of the profound power in the pursuit of excellence. Their journeys are as unique as they are inspiring. Some have dedicated their lives to the causes they champion, shaping the course of history. Others have emerged as forces of nature in the last few years, showcasing the boundless potential of determination and ambition.

But how did we select these honorees from among countless deserving candidates?

The answer is simple: They are exceptional trailblazers, pioneers, and changemakers. Some are the first in

their fields, breaking barriers that should never have existed. Others have wielded their influence to reshape societal perspectives and transform professional processes. And then there are those who have left behind legacies that will endure for generations to come. As you read through the stories of these remarkable women, we invite you to join us in celebrating their accomplishments, not merely as recognition of individual success, but as a guiding light for all of us. They serve as living proof that barriers can be breached, ceilings can be shattered, and that there are no limits to what can be achieved when determination meets opportunity.

Our Women of the Year list is not exhaustive. The stories represent the potential that resides within us all.

POLITICS

Aruna Miller is a trailblazing woman of color who has made history in the state of Maryland. She is the second woman to serve as lieutenant governor and the first immigrant to be elected to the office. As a civil and transportation engineer in the Maryland county of Montgomery Department

of Transportation, Miller worked to improve safety and reduce traffic congestion by making transportation more accessible. Over 25 years, she oversaw programs that improved access to schools and employment centers and made community facilities safe for pedestrians, bicyclists, transit users, and people with disabilities. From 2010 to 2018, Miller served as a representative of District 15 in the Maryland House of Delegates, where she championed legislation to invest in STEM education; streamline the regulatory process for small businesses; and support families, survivors of domestic abuse, and the environment. She served on the Ways and Means Committee and its Revenue, Transportation, and Education

Aruna Miller Lt. Governor of Maryland

Subcommittees, as well as the Appropriations Committee, where she chaired the Oversight of Personnel Subcommittee, vice chaired the Transportation and Environment Subcommittee, and vice chaired the Capital Budget Subcommittee. As lieutenant governor, Miller continues to focus on transportation, mental health, and STEM equity matters. She chairs the Governor’s Work Zone Safety Work Group, which is dedicated to making highway work zones safer and protecting the lives of workers, motorists, and law enforcement. Her contributions to Maryland’s public life are immense and inspiring. Miller was born in Andhra Pradesh, India, and came to the United States with her family when she was 7 years old. Her father was a mechanical engineer, and she followed in his footsteps by earning a Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering from the Missouri University of Science and Technology. Miller has dedicated her life to public service and breaking down systemic barriers to opportunity.

AIDr. Fei-Fei Li is the inaugural Sequoia Professor in the Computer Science Department at Stanford University and co-director of Stanford’s HumanCentered AI Institute. She served as the director of Stanford’s AI Lab from 2013 to 2018. During her sabbatical

from Stanford from January 2017 to September 2018, Li was vice president at Google and served as chief scientist of AI/ML at Google Cloud. Li’s research interests include cognitively inspired AI, machine learning, deep learning, computer vision, robotic learning, and AI+healthcare, especially ambient intelligent systems for health care delivery. In the past, she has also worked on cognitive and computational neuroscience. Li invented ImageNet and the ImageNet Challenge, a critical large-scale dataset that has contributed to the latest developments in deep learning and AI. In addition, she is a leading expert and national advocate for diversity in STEM and AI. She is also co-founder and chairperson of the nonprofit AI4ALL, aimed at increasing inclusion and diversity in AI education. Li has been working with public policymakers to ensure responsible use of technologies, including U.S. Senate and Congressional testimonies, and serves as a special advisor to the secretary general of the United Nations. She was a member of the National Artificial Intelligence Research Resource Task Force for the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) and the National Science Foundation (NSF) from 2021–2022. Li is an elected member of the National Academy of Engineering (NAE), the

National Academy of Medicine (NAM), and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (AAAS). She is the author of the book The Worlds I See: Curiosity, Exploration, and Discovery at the Dawn of AI, published by Macmillan Publishers in 2023.

MILITARY

In 2023, Brig. Gen. Janeen Birckhead was inducted into the Maryland Women’s Hall of Fame by the Maryland Commission for Women. This award is given to women who have made significant contributions to Maryland’s history and culture. Birckhead is the commander of the Maryland Army National Guard, responsible for the

readiness of 4,600 soldiers. She oversees 45 installations statewide. She also serves as the deputy commanding general of Reserve Affairs for the U.S. Army War College in Carlisle, PA. Birckhead was appointed the governor’s lead for the statewide COVID-19 Maryland Equity Task Force. She brought a force of over 1,500 soldiers in the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic. In the second phase, she developed a planning team with the Maryland Department of Health for vaccine distribution. Her leadership enabled the Maryland Army National Guard to establish Mobile Vaccination Support Teams, delivering 5,000 shots per week within the first two weeks of 2021. Birckhead helped communities throughout Maryland gain access to the COVID-19 vaccine. Her Maryland Army National Guard leadership also established more than 11 mass vaccination sites. Her work on the Maryland Equity Task Force was the subject of an article in the New England Journal of Medicine. In 2011, she deployed as deputy of the Current Operations, Security Partnering, and International Security Assistance Force, Kabul, Afghanistan.

In addition, Birckhead oversaw the successful deployment of the 58th Expeditionary Military Intelligence Brigade to Afghanistan, ensuring her soldiers passed rigorous training standards. She was director of legislative affairs for the Maryland National Guard. In her civilian capacity, Birckhead is a senior advisor in the Bureau of Trust Funds Administration and Assistant Secretary of Indian Affairs in the U.S. Department of the Interior, Washington, D.C. She began her civilian career in the U.S. Senate.

LAW

Kimberlé W. Crenshaw is a pioneering scholar and writer on civil rights, critical race theory, Black feminist legal theory, race, racism, and the law. In addition to her position at Columbia Law School, she is a Distinguished Professor of Law at the University of California, Los Angeles. Crenshaw’s work has been

foundational in critical race theory and in “intersectionality,” a term she coined to describe the double bind of simultaneous racial and gender prejudice. Her studies, writing, and activism have identified critical issues in the perpetuation of inequality, including the “school-to-prison pipeline” for African-American children and the criminalization of behavior by Black teenage girls. Through the Columbia Law School African American Policy Forum (AAPF), which she co-founded, Crenshaw co-authored (with Andrea Ritchie) “Say Her Name: Resisting Police Brutality Against Black Women,” which documented and drew attention to the killing of Black women and girls by police. Crenshaw and AAPF subsequently launched the #SayHerName campaign to call attention to police violence against Black women and girls. Crenshaw is a sought-after speaker and conducts workshops and training. She is also the co-author of “Black Girls Matter: Pushed Out, Overpoliced, and Underprotected.” Her writing has appeared in the Harvard Law Review, National Black Law Journal, the Stanford Law Review, and the Southern California Law Review. She is a founding coordinator of the Critical Race Theory workshop and co-editor of “Critical Race Theory: The Key Writings That Formed the Movement.”

In 1981, she assisted the legal team of Anita Hill during her testimony at the confirmation hearing of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas. Crenshaw hosts the podcast Intersectionality Matters! In addition, she has facilitated workshops for human rights activists and for

constitutional court judges. She serves on the Committee on Law and Justice of the National Academies of Science.

SOCIAL JUSTICE

Timnit Gebru is a computer scientist who works in artificial intelligence (AI), algorithmic bias, and data mining. She advocates for diversity in technology and is co-founder of Black in AI, a community of Black researchers working in AI. She founded the Distributed Artificial Intelligence Research Institute (DAIR). Gebru has been recognized for her expertise in the ethics of artificial intelligence. She was named one of the World’s 50 Greatest Leaders by Fortune, one of Nature’s 10 people who shaped science in 2021, and in 2022, one of Time’s most influential people. In 2001, Gebru was accepted at Stanford University. There, she earned her Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in electrical engineering and

her Ph.D. in computer vision in 2017. Fei-Fei Li advised Gebru during her Ph.D. program. Gebru presented her doctoral research at the 2017 LDV Capital Vision Summit competition, where computer vision scientists give their work to industry and venture capitalists. Gebru won the competition, starting a series of collaborations with other entrepreneurs and investors. During her Ph.D. program in 2016 and 2018, Gebru returned to Ethiopia with Jelani Nelson’s programming campaign, AddisCoder. While working on her Ph.D., Gebru authored a paper about her concern over the future of AI. She wrote of the dangers of the lack of diversity in the field, centered on her experiences with the police and on a ProPublica investigation into predictive policing, which revealed a projection of human biases in machine learning. Gebru joined Apple as an intern at Stanford, working in its hardware division making circuitry for audio components, and was offered a full-time position the following year. While at Apple, Gebru became more interested in building computer vision software to detect human figures. She went on to develop signalprocessing algorithms for the first iPad. At the time, she said she had not considered the potential use for surveillance, saying, “I just found it technically interesting.”

HEALTH

Dr. Yamini Teegala is a family physician and the chief medical officer at Rocking Horse Community Health Center, which is a Federally Qualified Health Center serving Clark and Madison Counties

in Ohio. She obtained her medical degree in India and has a background in public health and finance. Teegala is passionate about integrated care, interdisciplinary team approaches, and reducing health care costs. She believes in providing quality care to all patient families while considering the social determinants of health. Teegala is also a board member of CHF, which is committed to preserving reproductive services for the community. She is grateful for the foundation’s robust grant-making process and its generosity and trust in supporting other organizations in the community. Teegala has been serving at Rocking Horse Community Health Center since 2007, and her professional interests include primary care, chronic disease management, preventative medicine, behavioral health, health care leadership, quality improvement, and risk management. She previously worked at the New York Hospital of Queens before joining the RHC staff.

She was instrumental in setting up a field and digital marketing team and introducing tools to automate lead generation. Her expertise led to a promotion to marketing technology manager in 2021. Alexandria Provencher has been working

at American Axle & Manufacturing (AAM) for less than a year but has already made significant contributions to the business. Her expertise in environmental engineering helped her develop data management processes that improved the company’s sustainability ratings. These processes focused on the strengths of the users, resulting in more complete and accurate global information. As a result, AAM’s CDP Climate rating improved from “C” to “A-” while its EcoVadis rating improved an entire tier, which is important for stakeholders and investors making decisions related to the company.

Bhavana Chandrashekhar leads a team of 35 employees at Amazon Technology Innovation, working on one of Amazon Robotics’ most critical products. During her eight years at Amazon, Chandrashekhar has made significant contributions to the company’s computer vision, robotics, and machine learning. In her previous role, Chandrashekhar delivered critical software features that supported the world’s largest robotic picking system. Her leadership helped her team surpass its 2022 stretch goal, enabling a surge of holiday presents ordered in December. Chandrashekhar’s team has achieved over 25 percent diversity, equity, and inclusion representation in underrepresented fields.

MASTER SERGEANT BONNIE RUSHING, U.S. Air Force Academy Faculty

Master Sgt. Bonnie Rushing is a trailblazer

in many traditionally male-dominated fields including military, aircrew, and special operations. She was the first in her family to graduate from college and pursued a graduate degree at the National Intelligence University, where her thesis focused on artificial intelligence and human needs. Rushing has made significant contributions to national security missions and volunteered hundreds of hours for various causes. She has been honored with the 2021 Women of Color Pioneer Award for showcasing diversity and inclusion in military, intelligence, defense, and signals technology organizations.

BRENDA PACHECO FRANCO, Systems Engineer Technology, Security Engineering | Walmart, Inc.

Brenda Pacheco Franco is an integral part of Walmart’s team. She supports the Cloud Identity team, focusing on access management across cloud platforms. Franco developed application updates in the Google Cloud Directory, resulting in templates for updates. She actively seeks learning opportunities and is passionate about community outreach. She has developed a STEM camp and a program providing care packages for needy

families. Franco holds a bachelor’s degree in information technology and intelligence analysis from George Mason University and a master’s in cybersecurity strategy and information management from George Washington University.

Pearson has implemented a workshop introduced by Naval Air Systems Command that has now been expanded to cover entry-level employees in the command. Additionally, she created a video highlighting the important and exciting work performed at the division. The video was shared with historically Black colleges and universities, leading to an increase in diverse candidates.

HANNAH LAW, Data Center Operations Facility Manager | Google, Moncks Corner, SC

Hannah Law is a recognized expert in her field, with extensive experience in facilities management. She drafted engineering reports and provided rigor by creating a rubric to go with the reports. Additionally, she partnered with all warfare centers to close 72 percent of the open issues in her area of responsibility. Abboud also coordinated with team members to support critical efforts.

KARYNNA TUAN, Aerospace engineer | Ansys

Karynna Tuan is an aerospace engineer who joined Ansys in 2015. She began as an application engineer for systems tool kit software, where she helped clients plan missions for air, space, and military purposes. Tuan moved to Singapore for a sales field position, where she supported Ansys customers throughout the Asia-Pacific region for six years. Tuan’s technical expertise and ability to work with people across all categories made her a valuable member of the team. She was recently promoted to a management role for application engineers in the AsiaPacific, Europe, and Middle East regions.

Kindra Porter is an expert in improving processes, systems, and tools to ensure Bell’s customers receive their materials on time. Lorena Cruz Quintero is a front-line supervisor at L3Harris Technologies. She helps engineers advance in their careers and fosters relationships between teams and leadership. She is an expert in femtosecond laser machining, microscopy, bonding, and more. She oversees a team of 15 engineers. Quintero is a cointegrated product team lead for a $120 million program, and she has surpassed expectations by achieving a yield 2.5 times higher than projected. In her previous position, Quintero successfully demonstrated a $40 million program phase to the customer during the COVID-19 pandemic.

LYSA MARTINEZ, 912th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron | Edwards Air Force Base

Lysa Martinez is responsible for managing the finances and operations of the 912th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron at Edwards Air Force Base, CA. This squadron is responsible for testing 13 modified military aircraft, including planes like the C-17, KC-46, KC-135, B-1, B-2, B-21, and B-52. She manages financial accounts valued at over $2 million and initiates employee travel. Martinez’s leadership has resulted in a 25 percent increase in personnel recruitment and retention. The squadron has provided maintenance support for 38 aerial refueling missions and unloaded 500,000 pounds of fuel thanks to Martinez’s efforts.

MARYANN AYOADE, Medical/Health Physicist | U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission

Maryann Ayoade has been a medical radiation safety team member at the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) since 2014. She develops and oversees medical-related rulemaking, policy and guidance, reviews and evaluates emerging medical technologies. She

Nohemi Chagollan has been working in the automotive industry for more than 18 years, out of which she has spent eight years in leadership positions. She began her career as a software developer in 2004. In 2018, Chagollan was promoted to lead the research and development software department, where she managed a team of over 90 engineers, including 12 direct reports. Currently, she heads the software for business, architecture, and networking. In 2020, Chagollan moved to the U.S. from Mexico as the head of engineering software.

Ruby Tseng is responsible for managing environmental health and safety (EHS) at Google’s Changhua Data Center. She has led various EHS programs including those for temporary help agency workers, vendors, and independent contractors (TVCs). Under her leadership, the Changhua Data Center achieved 100 percent compliance. Tseng has initiated various EHS innovation projects, including

contractor consultative organization and a health program. Tseng’s contributions include leading a Taiwan community project to promote AI education and cloud branding, including educating primary school students on AI script writing and advanced AI product exploration.

SANDRA REYNA, Finance Manager | Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC)

Sandra Reyna is a senior finance manager at the Air Force, Department of Defense (DOD) Commands and Agencies Business Unit. She compiles, analyzes, and presents financial planning, forecasting, and analysis activities for customer groups; trains staff on system processes and functionality for SAIC; and assists in financial system upgrades. Reyna joined SAIC in 2011 as a staff accountant and progressed to senior finance manager, supporting various departments. Reyna completed a nomination-based program focused on accelerating the advancement of SAIC’s high-potential women at SAIC and earned a bachelor’s degree from William Paterson University.

TERIKA TALLIE-NORMAN, Network Engineer | General Motors

Terika Tallie-Norman started her job at General Motors in June 2022. She joined a skilled team that supports various technologies like GM’s data centers, core networking, application services, and network security teams. Aruna Miller was overwhelmed by the sights, sounds, and spectacle of an American airport when she arrived from India at age 7 in 1972.

She had an exuberant reaction to the bustling crowds, which she perceived as welcoming her father and her family to a country that held so much promise.

The family settled in New York and then Missouri, where her father worked as a mechanical engineer. His daughter earned a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Missouri University of Science and Technology and worked for more than two decades for the Maryland Department of Transportation in Montgomery County, working to improve public safety, reduce traffic congestion, and create equitable transportation access.

Miller, now 59, became an American citizen in 2000.

Miller advanced her commitment to public service in 2010 by running for and winning a seat in the Maryland House of Delegates, representing District 15. Her eight years in the House were marked by significant achievements, including legislation supporting STEM education, streamlining regulations for small businesses, protecting working families, advocating for domestic abuse survivors, and championing environmental causes. She served on the Ways and Means Committee and its Revenue, Transportation, and Education Subcommittees. Additionally, in her second term, Miller served on the Appropriations Committee, where she was chair of the Oversight of Personnel Subcommittee, vice chair of the Transportation and Environment Subcommittee, and vice chair of the Capital Budget Subcommittee.

An unsuccessful bid for Congress in 2018 did not deter Miller from her enthusiasm and dedication to public service.

In 2022, Wes Moore selected her as his running mate in the Maryland gubernatorial race, paving the way for a historic victory. The Moore-Miller ticket won 64 percent of the vote in November 2022, making Moore Maryland’s first African-American governor and Miller the state’s first woman of color and immigrant to hold statewide office as lieutenant governor.

During an election night speech, Miller said she was humbled to be the next lieutenant governor.

“Look, it is not lost on me on the onus of this moment being elected as the first immigrant to statewide office in Maryland,” said Miller. “And make no mistake, I know that as an immigrant I would not be standing here before you were it not for the courage of those before me who fought for our nation, our freedom, and our democracy.

“I also know that I wouldn’t have the privilege being an American if it were not for the Black activists who struggled and fought for our civil rights, and this has made all the difference,” she said.

“You see when you drop a bold, new, progressive idea into the world like the 1964 Civil Rights Act, you get a ripple effect. It gave America, the world, voting rights, women’s rights, workers’ rights, and immigrant rights.”

Recalling her initial reaction of coming to America as a child, Miller said, “I have never, ever stopped being excited about the great promise of America, and I will

never stop fighting to make sure that promise is available to everybody.”

In a Dec. 30, 2023, post on X, formerly known as Twitter, Moore shared his appreciation for Miller. “I couldn’t ask for a better partner in this work. Her leadership, expertise, and care is remarkable,” he stated in the post.

As lieutenant governor, Miller’s portfolio includes matters relating to expanding mental health, increasing equity in STEM education and careers, and transportation.

In her first year in office, she visited middle schools and high schools across the state and held listening sessions with students about their mental health and wellness needs.

She serves as chair of the Governor’s Work Zone Safety Work Group, dedicated to making highway work zones safer and protecting the lives of workers, motorists, and law enforcement. The lieutenant governor also chairs Maryland’s first Council on Interfaith Outreach, which convenes faith leaders from across the state of Maryland to bridge divides, increase religious tolerance, end hate, and better serve all communities.

Additionally, Miller serves as chair of the Overdose Response Advisory Council, which works with a comprehensive set of state agencies and offices to come up with best practices in addressing the overdose and addiction epidemic.

For more than 30 years, she has lived in Montgomery County with her husband David, where they raised three daughters. Miller remains active in the South Asian-American community. 

The process of creating technological solutions often starts with identifying a pressing need. Emerging technologies frequently arise out of necessity. Entrepreneurs and innovators identify gaps in existing systems or processes, prompting them to find novel solutions. These solutions aim to bridge knowledge gaps and provide evidence-based approaches to long-standing issues.

Innovation typically begins by addressing personal pain points or observing the challenges faced by others. Other trends include Edge AI, digital twins, intelligent applications, human-centered AI, the Metaverse, and spatial computing.

This list of BEYA winners focuses on the early adopters and trailblazers in decentralized, collaborative, and interoperative digital technologies that intersect with the physical world’s real-time spatially organized and indexed content. Quantum AI benefits areas such as cyber security by handling high-dimensional data. Several people on the list work with nascent technology that helps revolutionize fields like AI and cryptography.

Irma Gutierrez works with program managers, systems, and software testers to ensure that Alinity h instruments are configured and validated to support project test activities. She also works with the Instrument Lab support team to ensure that the required hardware, software, and commodities are available. Gutierrez must work with the manufacturing and supply chain teams to ensure that instrument supplies are available to minimize instrument downtime that could result in schedule delays. Whenever there are supply

chain issues, she collaborates with the appropriate stakeholders to develop mitigation strategies. If she encounters a roadblock, she elevates the issue to leadership, but always ensures she comes up with several options. Gutierrez noticed that she was spending a lot of time working with stakeholders to reserve systems for testing. So, she pulled together a cross-functional team and designed a more efficient way to secure instruments. She was able to fully automate the instrument reservation system, which reduced her time and provided more visibility into trending issues within lab operations. Gutierrez took Power BI and Design Plan training, which allowed her to generate the right first metrics for the Lab Operations and system test activities.

Mai-Lan Tomsen Bukovec leads teams responsible for critical data services offered by AWS, such as Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3) and Simple Queue Service (SQS), and managed open-source services like Amazon Managed Streaming for Apache Kafka. Christine Estacion is an exceptional worker who serves in two important roles. As an engineer, she is responsible for an extensive software development program that is essential both nationally and worldwide. The program presents the added challenge of developing new capabilities within a strict schedule-driven structure. Her enthusiasm every day inspires her team to succeed. Estacion’s primary role is as the automated test technical lead and subject matter expert, where she provides exemplary support to automated and manual test teams and software development teams. Her expertise in system domain knowledge, test tools and development, asset configuration, and maintenance support detailed Agile planning activities and critical test events. For instance, during program orientation for new hires, she provided onboarding support. When the manual test team needed help to execute regression test procedures for the program’s highest-priority test event, Estacion was selected as a senior tester to support the effort. She quickly identified and performed operations on test assets, verifying different versions of the frontend software component. Estacion also worked closely with the test infrastructure team to execute, troubleshoot, and

resolve challenging test procedures using specialized equipment. The test was completed successfully with her support.

Geataeus Willocks is a system engineering manager in SAIC’s National Security & Space Sector. She is a brilliant radiofrequency (RF) subject matter expert with experience designing,

building, and fielding various offensive and defensive, classified and unclassified, antenna and radar technologies across the space, air, ground, and sea battlespace domains. She joined SAIC in 2017 as an RF systems engineer and supported the USAF Space & Missile Systems Command Center Special Programs directorate, where she advised and led acquisition programs in electronic warfare (EW) space control successfully. Throughout her career, she has held many positions of increasing authority, leading teams focused on atmospheric traffic control and research and development with particular emphasis on propulsion technologies, X-ray vision, and super hearing. Initially, she worked as an RF and systems engineer at various defense contractor companies, primarily focused on radar systems for diverse ground, air, and sea platforms. Her team has performed so well that two different government customers recently reached out to her and her team to help staff two weapon system programs— work that would have typically gone to a competitor on a different contract.

Mims has been dedicated to developing, fielding, and sustaining software-intensive systems for the U.S.

Army and the Joint Warfighter, which are used every day in engagements worldwide. These systems provide fire control software capabilities to our weapon systems, allowing for quick and accurate arrangements. Mims has significantly contributed to the mission of DEVCOM AC through her leadership on critical programs. She was instrumental in fielding the lightweight handheld mortar ballistic computer and supporting foreign military sales to our allies. Her programmatic and financial oversight includes 40-plus fielded software-intensive systems currently being sustained by DEVCOM AC. Additionally, Mims participates in the DEVCOM AC mentoring program for future employees and contributes to the STEM outreach program by returning to her high school to inspire students to become scientists and engineers.
