The Council of Engineering Deans of the Historically Black Colleges and Universities Dear Corporate, Government, Military, and Student Leaders: Welcome to the 33rd Black Engineer of the Year Awards (BEYA) Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Global Competitiveness Conference. I chair the Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) Council of Engineering Deans, and it is my honor to join my fellow Deans and our conference co-hosts – Lockheed Martin Corporation and US Black Engineer & Information Technology magazine – in encouraging you to actively engage in the BEYA Experience and the opportunities this conference offers you to learn, to connect, and to build partnerships and collaborations. As you consider what this year’s conference theme: “At the Intersection of America’s Future”, means to you, we hope this conference will energize you to apply your STEM knowledge and personal strengths to help propel the nation progressively forward.

BEYA is a unique conference, and its occurrence every February is by design and purpose to celebrate great achievements in the STEM professions, with a special emphasis on engineering.

Whether this is your first time at the conference or your 33rd year, we anticipate that your BEYA Experience will support your resolve to ensure that your contributions positively impact your region, the nation, and the world. Participating in the exciting array of conference workshops provides opportunities to engage in conversations on topics ranging from engineering-based innovations and breakthroughs, to the application of analytics to leverage data for informed decision making and predictions, to entrepreneurship and leadership. BEYA also includes College and pre-College programming in recognition of the responsibility we all share to guide and encourage the next generation. Most of all, BEYA provides visibility of the many ways in which academic, government, and corporate partners work together to create STEM-based solutions, and the people leading the way. Congratulations to all BEYA 2019 awardees being honored at this year’s conference.

As is our tradition, this year’s events will conclude with the BEYA Gala, where the achievements of many of this year’s BEYA awardees will be recognized. The highlight of the Gala will be honoring the 2019 recipient of the “Black Engineer of the Year Award”. Congratulations to this year’s awardee – Anthony Mitchell – Executive Vice President of Booz Allen Hamilton on his impressive accomplishments.

Dear BEYA Participants: Welcome to the 2019 BEYA STEM Global Competitiveness Conference.

At Lockheed Martin, we are proud to partner with USBE&IT Magazine and the Council of Engineering Deans at Historically Black Colleges and Universities to co-host this event.

Every year, BEYA attracts some of the brightest minds from across the disciplines of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). At this conference, students, educators, and industry leaders come together to ensure the African-American community continues to shape the future of innovation.

This year’s conference theme, “At the Intersection of America’s Future,” is a reminder of the critical role of science and engineering in our society. The doors of opportunity we open today will be the gateway to a better tomorrow, as we work to unleash the potential of African-American men and women in the STEM fields.

At Lockheed Martin, we know what it takes to solve the world’s most complex and pressing challenges. We understand that in order to protect lives, advance scientific discovery, and create revolutionary technologies, our nation must have a strong and diverse STEM workforce.

For 33 years, our partnership with BEYA has helped connect us with our nation’s talent. Together, we have worked to build a more inclusive society, expand hope, and drive shared progress.

This conference also provides an opportunity to honor extraordinary African-American scientists, engineers, and leaders who have made a difference in the STEM fields. Our hope is that such recognition is an example and inspiration to those rising in their careers.

Greetings BEYA Conference Participates, As General Motors’ Executive Vice President for Global Manufacturing and the recipient of the 2018 Black Engineer of the Year, I welcome you to the 33rd Black Engineer of the Year Awards (BEYA) – Science, Technology, Engineering & Math (STEM) Global Competitive Conference.

This long-standing conference provides a platform for celebrating engineering excellence; while elevating the need for more diversity and inclusion in STEM fields.

At General Motors, we are focused on engineering a world of zeros: zero crashes, zero emissions and zero congestion. To get there, we know we need highly diverse and inclusive teams driving the innovation necessary to make our vision a reality. We understand the possibility to accelerate innovation when diverse perspectives and experiences intersect.

Greetings to all BEYA Conference Participants Welcome to BEYA STEM 2019, This year is the 33rd annual meeting of the Black Engineer of the Year Awards (BEYA) Conference. It’s a pleasure to be at one of the most important events in the BEYA Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) calendar.

As Chairperson of the BEYA Alumni Association, we rededicate ourselves to BEYA’s mission: Create connections between students, educators, and STEM professionals while facilitating partnerships with individuals and their local STEM resources.

The BEYA Alumni Association has come a long way since its humble beginnings.

Soon after retired Navy admiral, Anthony J. Watson won the Black Engineer of the Award (BEYA) in 1988 for Outstanding Achievement in Government; he began discussing the possibility of an alumni association with Tyrone Taborn, publisher of US Black Engineer & Information Technology (USBE) magazine and producer of the BEYA STEM Conference.

Under Taborn’s direction, Watson founded the BEYA Alumni Association with support from Boeing Vice President of Engineering Maintenance and Modification Joan Robinson Berry, who was instrumental in providing the initial funding to get the association up and running In 2003, the emerging group rededicated its focus to increasing the pipeline of people in STEM to “ensure that there will be Black Engineers of the Year over the next 30 years,” Watson told USBEmagazine in 2006.

Each year, BEYA alumni promote STEM careers in schools, community halls, at conferences, and on campuses tasked with training scientists, technologists, engineers, mathematicians, and promoting excellence in innovation.

Over the next three days, please use every opportunity to network with BEYA alumni while participating in seminars and workshops.

BREAKFAST Breakfast is provided on Saturday at the HBCU Engineering Deans’ Breakfast hosted by the engineering deans of the 15 ABET-accredited engineering schools.

Award presentations are made at this event. This is a ticketed event. For students participating in the CCG JobMatch program, breakfast is provided on Friday and Saturday.

LUNCH Lunch is only provided on Friday at the Technology Recognition Lunch. The Saturday workshop schedule provides for a 45-minute to one-hour lunch break for professionals. Lunch is on your own. College students are offered lunch opportunities during two sponsored lunch-andlearn workshops as well as lunch vouchers.

DINNERS On Thursday, the CCG Alumni Homecoming Gala, hosted by the first decade of BEYA winners, showcases the men and women who innovate, create, and guide corporate America. A brief program salutes BEYA’s 2018 inductees into our Hall of Fame and recognizes our HBCU Innovators.

On Friday, the Stars & Stripes Dinner and Mentoring Event documents the progress of African Americans in the military and Senior Executive Services. This event is hosted by the U.S. Army and is attended by senior military leadership. This is a ticketed event.

TRAINING The BEYA Experience challenges attendees to explore and work toward realizing their full potential through exposure to high achievers and role models in an environment where formal and informal learning are equally important. This offers learning opportunities for pre-college students up to the executive level.

The CEU/PDH program is offered through the Center for Continuing and Professional Studies at Morgan State University.

Participants will earn one CEU for every 10 hours spent in a CEU-eligible event.

Alternatively, participants may earn 10 PDHs by participating in a minimum of 10 PDHeligible events.

HOW TO PARTICIPATE • Pick up a packet at the registration kiosk or the Morgan State University table.

• Print your name on each attendance form located in the program packet.

• Get your name badge scanned as you enter and leave for each workshop that you attend.

• CEU/PDH certificates will be mailed to participants within six weeks after the conference.

EMERGENCY INFORMATION

EMERGENCY PROCEDURE The Washington Wardman Marriott Park hotel is fully prepared to handle different types of situations and to assist our guests. The following is information on emergency procedures: The hotel house phones automatically connect to the hotel operator.

The hotel has an emergency response team 24 hours a day. In the event of an emergency, picking up a hotel house phone will connect the caller with the hotel operator and initiate the appropriate response.

Paramedics, the Fire Department, and the Police Department are all located approximately five to seven minutes from the hotel.

Our Security Department, as well as a small number of other employees, is trained in CPR and First Aid. Emergency evacuation routes and procedures are located on the inside of all guest room doors.

Hotel Command Center, which is located directly off of the main lobby, is fully equipped with the latest technology to immediately respond to a wide range of scenarios with 130+ state-of-the-art surveillance cameras inside and outside the hotel. Additional exterior cameras provide continuous 360-degree coverage of the hotel. The hotel’s security staff maintains logs of their rounds via a bar code system at over 300 checkpoints throughout the hotel to ensure compliance with hotel premise checks. The hotel’s ventilation system is designed to shut off the air handlers within one minute’s notice and immediately reverses to evacuate smoke and prevent circulation of unhealthy air.

“Roam Secure Alert” instantaneously sends a message to all registered cell phone and email addresses, providing the latest hotel incident information and response instructions.

The hotel’s alarm system is monitored by Simplex, which directly notifies the fire department in case of an emergency.
