01 HIGH DENSITY

SUBURBAN HOUSING This project is an exploration of how the quality of suburban housing can be preserved in high density housing.

One of the defining elements of suburban housing is the numerous layers of the street: they act to increase the feeling of separation between public and private, creating a more isolated feeling within the dwelling Taking this concept forward, I explored how you could create a ‘high density suburb’ by replicating these layers of separation between the public and private.

02 ARCHITECTURE FOR MOTORING EVENTS

This project is a response to the annual motoring events that are hosted on Brighton Seafront. These events are predominantly motoring events, that celebrate classic cars through shows and speed trials. The events bring a lot of activity to the site, which is otherwise quite unused.

The project aims to enhance the experience of the events, whilst also sustaining some of the life brought to the area by the events.

The project also reflects the maintenance aspect of the classic car culture: all of the spaces are designed to be maintained and upgraded over time.

SITE ANALYSIS: YEAR CYCLE:

The diagram above shows the opening and closing months of the shops on the site, and the corresponding level of footfall/ activity. The activity is generally higher in summer and spikes during event days. Due to the strong fluctuation in activity, it was necessary to create a ‘reactive system’ that would respond to the activity levels on site.

FLEXIBLE FACADE: A REACTIVE SYSTEM

In order to respond to the sites fluctuating activity, the project includes a ‘flexible facade’: this is a flat facade with pivoting elements, allowing it to quickly be transformed into market stalls. The market stalls will be used by studios to sell their wares and also by the vendors that travel with the events. The stalls are easy to open and will allow the studios to respond/ open when there is high footfall.

STUDIOS:

The studios are elevated above the event space to allow the events to continue functioning. The studios are simple timber structures and have space to grow in size over time.

GROUND LEVEL:

On the ground level, where the events will be happening, mechanical garages will enable the event cars to be worked on/ viewed at the events.

MATERIAL AND STRUCTURE:

The main elements of the site is the concrete cliff face and the listed wrought iron terraces/ trusses. This model expresses these elements and shows the new structures, which responds to the existing.

SKETCHBOOK:

Consideration given to: convertible shelter, elevated viewing platforms and occupied areas above the event space.

SITE PLAN:

The site plan shows (from north to south): storage/ facilities, market stalls,studio spaces, and a cafe. The drawing also shows the activity expected during events.

TRAIN CAFE:

Due to the linear nature of the site and events, the project also includes a ‘Train cafe’ This allows visitors to experience the entire event whilst indoors.

TRACKS:

‘Train Cafe’ uses the tracks and station that exist on the seafront, and an additional station placed on site.

NATURAL LIGHTING:

The studios pitched roof allows sunlight to hit the treated cliff face and be reflected into the studios, providing defuse natural lighting.

The studio spaces are simple timber frame structures to enable the occupiers to expand and adapt them easily.

SKYLIGHT FRAME SECTION:

The skylight enables northern light to enter the studio space.

MANUAL VENT SECTION:

The manual vents allow for the occupants to let in fresh air, which will travel in from the south and out through the openable skylight.

03 COMMERCIAL SHOWROOM

The following project was designed by myself whilst working for Liam Russell Architects. I oversaw the project from conception to planning approval and produced all of the drawings and images.

The brief was to demolish the existing commercial unit and build 2 in its place.

The main driver behind the design was to avoid overshadowing the neighbouring back gardens and to create an ‘eye-catching’ building to draw in potential customers. The sharp angular form achieved both of these goals: the acute angles enabled maximum height with minimal shading, and also created a striking form.

CONCEPT MODEL:

The proposed building has been designed to be dynamic and eye catching in order to draw potential customers to the site. The images shown are of the original concept model. The roof form was later simplified and the final design received planning approval.

OVERSHADOWING:

Consideration of the surrounding properties’ natural light conditions has been the main device used to generate the unique form of the proposed design. The roof of unit 1 is at a 18.5 degree angle to prevent any resilient shading of the rear garden of No. 7 Edinburgh close, relative to the existing conditions.

04 RESIDENTIAL UNIT The following project was designed by myself whilst working for Liam Russell Architects. I oversaw the project from conception to planning approval and produced all of the drawings and images.

The clients were a new family wanting to demolish their existing house and build a new dwelling that reflected their life style.

For this project I aimed to strike a balance between clean lines and warm materials, generating a modern aesthetic that still feels welcoming.

For the lower ground floor I wanted to give the impression of strength and weight to ground the proposal, this is reflected by the large rough bricks. The exterior of the ground floor will be experienced closely (with the front door, side circulation and terrace being on this floor) so soft wood cladding was used all the way around. And for the first floor, sand cement render is used in a ‘framing form’ to express privacy/sheltering of the private spaces/ bedrooms.

RESPONSE TO SITE:

The unit responds to the steep incline by stepping down with the slope. This prevented the dwelling looking overlydominant when viewed from the garden.

The ground floor consists of: a double garage, a boot room for cleaning dogs, a cloak room, a snug and study, which can open out to form one large space and a sun room, connected to a terrace,
