continues to have a strong relationship with transport infrastructure; the city is now home to Gatwick Airport and Three Bridges station. However, with the development of transport technology, the social and cultural aspects that were once a part of Crawley have been lost.

RECREATING THE CrawleyINN has a long history of being a commuter town. This dates back to the 18th century, where its location on the main road between London and Brighton brought passing trade, which encouraged the development of coaching inns. This created a rich melting pot within Crawley where residents and travellers would interact and participate in cultural Crawleyevents.

ELEMENTS OF THE INN: elements of traditional inns that are to be recreated, these are: transport, accommodation, services & event space. These aspects are reinvented to suit modern life styles and modern transportation methods. TRADITIONAL COACHING INN (CIRCA 1790)

The cafe sits in the centre of the event space. The residents of the accommodation block will help run the cafe in exchange for a cheaper cost of living (for example producing goods for the cafe to sell or helping to organise events). The cafe also provides a resting spot for commuters; located at the junction between the different transport nodes it offers a space for them to recuperate from their journeys and mix with local residents.CAFE PLAN

myself whilst working for Liam Russell Architects. I oversaw the project from conception to planning approval and produced all of the drawings and images. The brief was to demolish the existing commercial unit and build 2 in its place. The main driver behind the design was to avoid overshadowing the neighbouring back gardens and to create an ‘eye-catching’ building to draw in potential customers. The sharp angular form achieved both of these goals: the acute angles enabled maximum height with minimal shading, and also created a striking form.

CONCEPT MODEL:

The proposed building has been designed to be dynamic and eye catching in order to draw potential customers to the site. The images shown are of the original concept

ConsiderationOVERSHADOWING:ofthesurrounding properties’ natural light conditions has been the main device used to generate the unique form of the proposed design. The roof of unit 1 is at a 18.5 degree angle to prevent any resilient shading of the rear garden of No. 7 Edinburgh close, relative to the existing conditions.

The following project was designed by myself whilst working for Liam Russell Architects. I oversaw the project from conception to planning approval and produced all of the drawings and images. The clients were a new family wanting to demolish their existing house and build a new dwelling that For this project I aimed to strike a balance between clean lines and warm materials, generating a modern aesthetic that still feels welcoming. impression of strength and weight to ground the closely (with the front door, side circulation and cement render is used in a ‘framing form’ to express privacy/sheltering of the private spaces/bedrooms.

RESPONSE TO SITE: The unit responds to the steep incline by stepping down with the slope. This prevented the dwelling looking overlydominant when viewed from the garden.
