What is Coronavirus?

Coronaviruses are a common huge family of viruses in the world that can causes illness ranging from the common cold to severe respiratory illness in animals & humans. Some of the famous types of coronaviruses are Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS-CoV) & Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS-CoV). â—?

MERS-CoV is first identified in Saudi which infects humans, bats & camels.

Typical symptoms of MERS includes fever, cough & shortness of breath.

Around 35% of MERS infected patients have died.

SARS-CoV is first infected in China which causes illness in animals (mostly bats) & humans. Common symptoms are fever, headache, diarrhoea & shivering, etc.

What is COVID-19?

COVID-19 is a life threatening disease that arise firstly in China (Wuhan). It is a pandemic affecting many countries globally that caused by a coronavirus called 2019-nCoV. It is a newly discovered coronavirus had previously not been identified in humans.

The most common symptoms of COVID-19 are fever, cough, respiratory illness.

How are COVID-19 Spread?

COVID-19 pandemic that can causes from others who have virus. It can spreads through droplets released from infected person coughs or sneezes into the air.

People can capture COVID-19 if they breathe from these droplets. It is very important to keep at least 1 meter distance with each other to avoid the breathing from these droplets. These droplets may be land on objects & surfaces around the person such as tables, doors, chairs, etc. When an uninfected person touch these surface, then touching their eyes, nose or mouth will spread the disease to them.

That is why health workers saying it is important to wash your hands regularly with soap, hand sanitizer and water.

Symptoms of COVID-19 The most common signs or symptoms of COVID-19 are fever, cough, shortness of breath. Some patients may experience mild symptoms and others have severe.

Community spread means the infection of virus from an area, but it is not sure how or from where they became infected.

It is more important to practice physical hygiene, respiratory etiquette, social distancing.

Wash your hands periodically with soap, alcohol-based hand sanitizer, and water.

Avoid touching your eyes, nose & mouth.

Always cover your mouth and nose with a tissue while coughing or sneezing.

Cough into the flexed elbow.

Maintain at least 1m distance between each other.

Stay home if you feel ill & contact a medical adviser.

The doctor will decide if there is a need for testing of COVID-19 depending upon your symptoms and detailed history including that of travel. The presently recommended test for diagnosis of COVID-19 world over is RT-PCR.
