HEARTS & MINDS SERVING THE WORLD Message from the President Dear Friends of Rivier, This issue of Rivier Today is quite singular in that it spans four centuries of stories. The story of Saint Marie Rivier, the story of the Sisters of the Presentation of Mary in North America, Rivier’s founding story, and of course the stories of our alumni, staff, and students of today.

The University’s own story began with Anne Marie Rivier, who was born in the late 18th century. One who walked boldly, overcoming physical limitations and social barriers. In the midst of the French Revolution, she focused on educating women and children in the faith. Hers was a Gospel spirituality imbued with the practical applications of service. In her own words: “Holiness does not consist in doing spectacular things, but in doing our duty as well as we can, wherever God has put us.”

The 19th century calls to mind the influence of the Industrial Revolution— the period in which her community, the Sisters of the Presentation of Mary, boldly journeyed to North America. First to Quebec in 1853, then 20 years later they accompanied French Canadians to the mill towns of Vermont, Maine, and New Hampshire.

The beginning of the 20th century represented a time of bold action and investment. Women religious across the United States saw the need for Catholic higher education for women. Rivier, founded in 1933 in the midst of the Great Depression, achieved bold initiatives including the growth of the Nashua campus, the development of graduate programs, and an everpresent focus on service that imbues the campus to this day.

The 21st century unfolds on the Rivier campus with a bold and bright vision including expansion of student residential life and a focus on community that is founded on the transformational nature of education.

Our time also offers its own opportunities to Go Boldly, a theme we will celebrate throughout our 90th anniversary year in 2022-2023.

This span of centuries represents a lived experience of Gospel values and Saint Marie Rivier’s faith-driven vision to Go Boldly. To Go Boldly in serving the vulnerable and to Go Boldly in building an institution that would meet the needs of the times.

Dedicated to a life of service Jake DeStefano ’21 has chosen a life of service. He came to Rivier to earn a degree in Criminal Justice and to become a police officer. The education he received went far beyond academics.

DeStefano received his badge and became an official member of the Nashua Police Department in a badge pinning ceremony held at Rivier in June. He is pictured above (left to right) with his faculty advisor Professor Eric Gentes, his athletic head coach James DeLanoy, and his internship supervisor and Director of Public Safety Robert Casey, all of whom had an impact on his educational experience and proudly attended the ceremony.

DeStefano was a global honors scholar, captain of the men’s lacrosse team, and a peer mentor while he attended Rivier.

He is recognized for his intelligence, leadership skills, and dedication to service by many in the community.

Though a Massachusetts native, he chose to return to New Hampshire and devote himself to serving the Nashua community.

Go Boldly … Rivier celebrates 90 years

The University will celebrate its 90th anniversary in 2022-2023 with the theme Go Boldly. Founded in 1933 to expand access to higher education for women, Rivier has kept its motto—Altiora et Meliora, Higher and Better—in the forefront of its mission and purpose.

“Go Boldly characterizes the vision of the Sisters of the Presentation of Mary and Rivier’s Foundress Sister Madeleine of Jesus in establishing a college for women during the height of the Great Depression,” says Sister Paula Marie Buley, IHM. “For the last 90 years, the Sisters and the Rivier community have advanced higher education opportunities with an unwavering belief in the University’s mission of transforming

hearts and minds to serve the world,” says Sister Paula. “Rivier’s history provides a pathway for future initiatives to go boldly in advancing academic programs that serve the needs of the region and create a student experience supporting growth and a deeper understanding of the challenges of the present day.” The University continues to recognize the importance of the humanities and programs that support the 21st century workforce at the undergraduate and graduate levels including nursing, education, business, cybersecurity, counseling, and the sciences. Special celebrations recognizing Rivier’s 90th anniversary and the canonization of Saint Marie Rivier will take place in September.

Oral history project to document Rivier alumni experiences

In honor of the upcoming 90th anniversary, the University is embarking on the first-of-its-kind oral history project to chronicle and preserve alumni experiences throughout Rivier’s 90-year history.

The University has partnered with Publishing Concepts Inc. to create a written anthology of alumni stories that will be printed in a commemorative, limited edition, hardbound book available for purchase by alumni, along with several 90th anniversary items.

Purchases of these products through the publishing company fund the project, which is conducted at no cost to Rivier. The purchase of products is not required to participate.

Alumni are invited through postcard and emails to verify their alumni information and share their stories.

The yearlong project will culminate with the printing and distribution of the commemorative book and 90th anniversary items in the spring of 2023.

Rivier earns #1 state and national rankings

The University has been ranked the #1 nursing school in New Hampshire and a top 50 private nursing school nationally by Nursing Schools Almanac. Nursing Schools Almanac 2022 rankings were based on an assessment of more than 3,000 institutions of which only 6% were selected for recognition. Rivier’s rankings include: Best Nursing Schools in New Hampshire | Ranked 1 Best Nursing Schools in New England | Ranked 10 Best Private Nursing Schools Nationwide | Ranked 47 Rivier’s MBA in Information Technology Management was ranked the number one program in the country by Intelligent.com, an organization that compares degree programs of 2,900 accredited colleges and universities. In addition, several other business, nursing, and human services programs earned national rankings.

Recognizing community impact

Dr. Amir Toosi, Dean of the Division of Business and Security Studies, received the Community Volunteer of the Year Award from the Greater Nashua Chamber of Commerce at the organization’s 19th Annual Eminence Awards in May. He was recognized for his many years of dedicated service to the Chamber as a Past Chair and member of the Board of Directors and as an Ambassador, as well as his service to the community as a board member for Symphony NH, United Way of Greater Nashua, YMCA of Greater Nashua, and the Adult Learning Center.

Through Dr. Toosi’s engagement, Rivier is better able to meet current workforce needs and gains valuable internship placement opportunities.

“Dr. Toosi models Rivier’s values of engagement, service, and sharing of professional expertise,” says Sister Paula Marie Buley, IHM. “Nashua is our home, and the University is committed to lifelong contributions to the broader community.”

Dr. Toosi chairs the University’s Business and Security Studies Advisory Councils and serves on the Nursing, Public Health, and Biotechnology Advisory Councils. He is a member of the Academy of Management, the Association of Continuing Higher Education, and has served as the Chair and Past Chair of the Committee for Scholar-Practitioner Publications for the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs.

Board of Trustees expands healthcare and strategic planning expertise

Rivier has welcomed six new members, including three alumni, to the Board of Trustees. Their experience and expertise span a range of disciplines with a notable depth in healthcare and strategic planning.

Matthew McGrath is President and CEO for Systems Engineering, an information technology strategy and managed services provider in Manchester, New Hampshire. He serves on the Board of Directors for Systems Engineering and Yarmouth Little League in Maine and is a dedicated volunteer in support of Habitat for Humanity, Camp Sunshine, Cumberland Wood Bank, and the Boots2Roots organization.

Mailaja Mohammed ’16G is an internal medicine hospitalist at New England Inpatient Specialists and family nurse practitioner at Foundation Medical Partners. He sits on the Special Care/ NICU Advisory Council for Beth Israel Hospital and is a board member with the Windham Muslim Community Center.

Yosleidys Rivero-Lara ’18 works regionally as a registered nurse and trained interpreter. Knowing firsthand an experience of immigrating to the United States, she provides valuable insight as Rivier educates for intercultural competencies. She is fluent in English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, and Patois—a creole language spoken in Jamaica.

David Roedel is the Business Development Officer at Roedel Companies, a property management company in Wilton, New Hampshire.

He has served on several nonprofit boards including the Boys & Girls Club of Manchester, Big Brothers Big Sisters of New Hampshire, Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce, and New Hampshire Charitable Foundation. In 2009, he was named a member of New Hampshire’s “40 Under Forty” by the Union Leader.

Serving as Principal, Sister Maria Rosa, pm ’87 leads Presentation of Mary Academy, a private Catholic school for children ages three through grade eight in Hudson, New Hampshire.

She served on the Diocesan Pastoral Council for six years and numerous Diocesan strategic planning committees. She has been a mentor for new principals and presently serves on the leadership team for the United States Province of the Sisters of Presentation of Mary.

Thank you for making a gift and making a difference

The University sincerely thanks the hundreds of alumni and friends who made a gift on this year’s annual Day of Giving in April. In just one day, $115,000 was raised to support the Rivier University Fund and student scholarships.

A generous matching donation from Catherine Eames ’81 doubled all gifts made by 10 a.m. and first-time gifts from alumni donors throughout the entire day.

Sister Paula Marie Buley, IHM shared this message with alumni and friends: “You have made a difference in the lives of students and in the life of this University. Sister Lucy Veilleux, pm ministers in healthcare as a chaplain and health information manager. She had a 25year career in Catholic education as a teacher and administrator before pursuing her second career as a chaplain. She is also a key member of the Sisters of the Presentation of Mary leadership team.

Saint Marie Rivier The Woman Apostle

Saint Marie Rivier has entered the canon of saints in recognition of her enduring faith, service, and love of neighbor.

On May 15, Pope Francis elevated Blessed Marie Rivier, Foundress of the Sisters of the Presentation of Mary and Rivier University’s namesake, to sainthood along with nine other Blesseds. The Canonization Mass, viewed around the world, drew more than 45,000 pilgrims to Rome including a U.S. delegation of the Sisters of the Presentation of Mary, Rivier students, administrators, and friends.

The Catholic tradition includes the recognition of holiness of life, doing the ordinary in an extraordinary way. Throughout history men and women who lived a life of virtue, faith, and closeness to God in prayer have been canonized as saints and examples of Christian witness.

What is it in Anne Marie Rivier’s life that led to this recognition of sainthood?

Early Life and Healing Born in 1768 in Montpezat, France, Anne Marie suffered a debilitating fall at 16 months old that left her unable to stand or walk. Immobile, her muscles atrophied, and her legs grew crooked.

Her devoted mother, Jean, a woman of deep faith, made daily trips to the village church. For nearly four years Anne Marie prayed at the statue of Mother Mary and Jesus—the Pieta. In response to this faith, Anne Marie experienced

a miracle of healing on September 8, 1774, and upon returning from the church she was able to walk with the help of crutches. Her complete healing took place three years later on the Feast of the Assumption of Mary. Though short in stature, standing only 4’4’’, she was able to walk unassisted from that day forward and advanced her lifelong mission with boundless energy.

Vocation and Evangelization – Sharing God’s Word Already spirit-filled and something of a wonder in her village, she took on the roles of educator and caregiver, regularly gathering children for instruction in the faith and tending to the needs of the poor and sick. These kindnesses earned her the name “petite Maman” or “little Mum.” Anne Marie’s faith and desire to dedicate herself completely to God grew. She attended the Sisters of Notre Dame boarding school in Pradelles, France, expecting to enter their congregation once completing her studies.

However, she was denied admittance due to her poor health. This denial only strengthened her resolve. While deeply disappointed, she instead founded a school in her own town in 1786 at the age of eighteen.

Saint Marie Rivier—The Woman Apostle The French Revolution (1789) launched a period rife with social and economic disruption, inequality, and religious conflict. All religious congregations and practices were suppressed, and religious activities were viewed with suspicion. While religious practice had been banned, Anne Marie secretly gathered followers for Sunday prayer services. She opened Catholic schools and orphanages, trained unemployed women whose husbands were lost to or fighting in the Revolution, and cared for the sick and vulnerable. Her charism, or spirit, was magnetic. Many young women were eager to join her—to experience and expand God’s providence.

In 1796, undeterred by France’s ban on religion, she founded the Congregation of the Sisters of the Presentation of Mary, a religious order dedicated to education in the faith and service to the poor and vulnerable. It was wartime, and lacking any financial resources, Anne Marie, now known as Marie Rivier, relied on her deep faith and complete trust in God’s grace to meet the needs, especially of children.

In 1801, religious practice was allowed again, and the Congregation expanded rapidly. Upon Marie Rivier’s death in 1838, the Sisters of the Presentation of Mary counted more than 140 houses and 350 Sisters across regions of France. The Sisters founded 149 schools, continuing and expanding Catholic education.

Boldness of Vision – The Sisters of the Presentation of Mary in North America For Marie Rivier, the sharing of the Gospel message extended beyond national boundaries, and she believed that “My daughters will one day cross the seas.” In 1853, 15 years after her death, six Sisters crossed the Atlantic Ocean and established a foundation in Quebec, Canada. The Sisters of Presentation of Mary quickly expanded their ministry of education across Canada.

Twenty years later in 1873, when many French Canadians were migrating south to work in New England textile and paper mills, a group of Sisters immigrated to Glen Falls, New York. Establishing their Congregation in the United States, they continued to serve the educational and spiritual needs of youth by opening boarding and parish schools.

Their missions soon grew to include schools in Vermont, Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island.

The Sisters generously responded to a request from the Bishop of the Diocese of Manchester, George Albert Guertin, establishing Presentation of Mary Academy boarding school for girls in 1926. It is in this stately building in Hudson, New Hampshire that Sister Madeleine of Jesus founded Rivier College in 1933 before moving to Nashua in 1942.

Embodying the spirit and zeal of Marie Rivier, Sister Madeleine was a woman of great faith and action. She believed that she and her fellow Sisters should be highly engaged and manifest God’s presence in the world of higher education.

Rivier College (now University) was established 90 years ago at a time when women had limited access to Catholic higher education. Sister Madeleine intended for Rivier to be an American-style college, preparing women for life and the professions.

Saint Marie Rivier – Virtue that transcends time While the life of ministry of Saint Marie Rivier occurred more than two centuries ago, her message and witness are timeless. River University is fortunate to have the example of Saint Marie Rivier as a guiding vision. Through faith, she overcame disability; with love, she recognized the dignity of the human person in the poor and vulnerable; and through her own life of virtue, she inspired others to follow in her ministry of proclaiming the Gospel message.

For more than two centuries, Saint Marie’s ministry and mission have endured and spread across the globe. Her legacy and works continue to have an impact on vocations and religious service, on students and communities who are advanced through Catholic education, and on the individuals who are healed and receive graces through her intercession.

Today, the Sisters of the Presentation of Mary are active in 19 countries spanning five continents. They educate and care for children, they are a voice for the importance of the education of women, and they most especially have carried on Saint Marie’s apostolic task of evangelization and work without ceasing to share the Gospel message.

Attribution of Miracles Saint Marie Rivier has two miracles attributed to her intercession—both healings of severely ill children— which advanced her Cause for sainthood. Countless others report graces received after prayerful requests made to Saint Marie.

Paulette Dubois was born in 1930 in Bourg St. Andéol and subsequently diagnosed with infantile acrodynia, which is often caused by mercury poisoning. Families in the area asked the Sisters of the Presentation of Mary to pray a novena to Marie Rivier for their child’s healing. On the final day of the novena, all her symptoms vanished, and Dubois was completely healed. Paulette died in 2020 at the age of 90 having been present in Rome for the beatification of Blessed Marie Rivier.

The second miracle was the healing of Angel Marie Vier Albaracin Degamo in 2015. Diagnosed, before birth with hydrops fetalis, a deadly disease affecting the heart and lungs, Angel's family, especially her mother, prayed to Blessed Marie Rivier for her healing. Angel was born without any sign of the disease, a true miracle and the necessary final step for Saint Marie Rivier’s canonization by the universal Church. Angel, her mother, and sisters (pictured below) joined in the canonization events on May 15.

Pilgrimage to Rome – A lifechanging experience Sisters of the Presentation of Mary, Rivier alumni, staff, and students were blessed to celebrate Saint Marie Rivier’s canonization in Rome.

The group had the opportunity to explore the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel, the Roman Forum, and Colosseum during the week, as well as travel to the Italian countryside. Each day was an adventure and an education.

While each pilgrim experienced a different dimension of transformation, all gained an appreciation of the vision and boldness of Saint Marie Rivier and her continuing spirit and enduring mission.

The Future of Nursing is Here Rivier’s new Nursing Simulation and Clinical Education Center broadens the scope and transforms the delivery of nursing education.

Driven by a $1 million donation, Rivier’s renovated nursing facility will educate the next generation of nurses who will support the Greater Nashua community. State-of-theart skills and simulation labs offer the newest technology for clinical assessment, community nursing, and telehealth simulation. The 17,825-square-foot facility in Sylvia Trottier Hall opened in the spring and provides students the opportunity to gain real-world experience in controlled clinical settings. It is the most recent advancement in the University’s multi-year campus enhancement plan.

Buley, IHM, President. “Our visionary benefactor has gifted Rivier students with an environment that challenges them to ‘think like a nurse,’ as they model real-life medical situations.

Rivier has long been at the forefront of simulation-based learning, and the new center offers nearly limitless opportunities for students to gain sophisticated clinical skills in our fully accredited ASN, BSN, RN-BSN, MSN, and DNP programs.”

The center spans the second level of Sylvia Trottier Hall and includes six simulation labs and assessment areas, two classrooms, a lecture hall, a suite of nursing administrative and faculty offices, and several areas for facultystudent collaboration. Simulation labs

mirror the settings in which nurses most often provide care: medical/ surgical and pediatric/neonatal hospital rooms, an obstetrics room, examination rooms, and telehealth offices. Designated labs accommodate undergraduate nursing, public health, and advanced nurse practitioner training.

“As healthcare advances, Rivier adapts,” shares Dr. Paula Williams, Dean of the Division of Nursing and Health Professions. “The new center is fully equipped with state-of-theart technology, which allows us to manage, record, and assess simulation training for practice in real-world health environments. We have a wide variety of high-fidelity simulators

including pediatric Hal, the world’s most advanced wireless pediatric simulator and the first to simulate lifelike emotions through dynamic facial expressions, movement, and speech.”

The University is a nationally ranked top 50 private nursing school out of 3,000 institutions evaluated across the country by Nursing Schools Almanac and honored as the #1 nursing school in New Hampshire in 2022. The RN-BSN online program is ranked #1 in the state by RegisteredNursing.org. Additionally, Intelligent.com has ranked Rivier in the top 25 for Best Online Nurse Practitioner Master's Degree Programs nationally.

87th Commencement Marks a Milestone in Rivier History

Rivier celebrated its 87th Commencement on May 15, awarding 683 degrees to associate, bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degree graduates. The ceremony highlighted leadership, transformation, and service in alignment with Rivier’s mission of transforming hearts and minds to serve the world. The celebration included a tribute to the University’s namesake, Saint Marie Rivier, who was elevated to sainthood by Pope Francis earlier that day in Rome (see page 5).

“This day marks a milestone in the lives of these students and in the history of the University,” said Sister Paula Marie Buley, IHM, President. “Saint Marie’s transcendent ministry of education continues to make an impact today through Rivier graduates’ contributions to their professions and communities.”

The University honored Dianne M. Mercier, President of People’s United Bank for New Hampshire, as its 2022 honorary degree recipient and Commencement speaker.

As Chair of Rivier’s Board of Trustees, Mercier led the University in envisioning its future through the Vision 2020 strategic plan and ushering in a new era of innovation in the sciences with the construction of the Science and Innovation Center. Today, she continues her service as a member of the Rivier University Corporation. She also serves as Chair of the SolutionHeath Board of Trustees, Vice-Chair and Trustee for the RiverWoods Group, and a member of the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation’s Board of Directors.

An inspirational leader, Mercier’s speech addressed the importance of individual responsibility and purpose.

“I must always paddle my own canoe, which means I can’t surrender my conscience to anyone,” said Mercier. “If you want happiness in your life, learn to paddle your own canoe. Ask the questions that will allow you to set your priorities. Choose your people well, choose your things well, choose your purpose well.”

Student speeches focused on the transformational power of education and service to the greater good. Dr. Susan Santana of Pelham, New Hampshire, received her Doctor of Nursing Practice degree and spoke on behalf of graduate students. “I’ve had the honor of achieving a master’s in business administration, a Master of Science in Nursing, and now a doctorate in nursing practice—all of them from this amazing University,” said Dr. Santana. “This educational path has aligned with progressive leadership roles in my career. My career and education have transformed the way I think and approach life. I’m encouraged to be a transformational leader and help redefine nursing and healthcare.”

Undergraduate student speaker Caroline E. Prud’homme of Goffstown, New Hampshire, earned her B.A. in Elementary Education, summa cum laude. “I stand here today a much different person than I was a year ago, let alone when I started this journey four years ago,” said Prud’homme. “Rivier’s holistic approach to learning encompassed mind, body, and spirit. Rivier was committed to immersing us into our chosen fields, while shaping us all into well-rounded, global-thinking individuals.

The human experience is something that we share, and we must encourage love and compassion to lead to unity.

Seek good, spread good, and be the good.”

Rivier Village Expanding the Residential Experience

The University announced plans to construct Rivier Village to support recent enrollment growth and diversify campus housing options.

BY MICHELLE MARRONE Rivier welcomed one of the largest classes in its history this past fall, bringing campus housing to near capacity. A cause for celebration and new construction, the University is moving forward with a plan to develop Rivier Village, an apartmentstyle residential complex.

In great measure, the expansion of Rivier Athletics has increased enrollment of a more geographically diverse student body. The addition of apartment-style units will enable more juniors and seniors to live on campus.

“Rivier Village is a tangible demonstration of the University’s dynamic growth,” says Sister Paula Marie Buley, IHM, President. “The new residences will accommodate Rivier’s expansion and provide opportunities for upper-level students to experience independent, apartment-style living prior to their transition to early professional life.”

Rivier Village will occupy the city block across from the Science and Innovation Center and Muldoon Fitness Center on South Main Street. The project will commence this summer and will include the construction of two buildings.

Each apartment suite will contain four-to-six bedrooms, multiple bathrooms, a living room, a full kitchen, and washer and dryer units.

Most suites will offer single bedrooms.

A 12-month rental option is under consideration, and meal plans will be optional.

“The plans are impressive,” says Kurt Stimeling, Vice President for Student Affairs. “The village concept within campus includes open, green spaces and a parking space for each student housed in the apartments.”

A groundbreaking is anticipated this August, and the University will welcome residential students to Rivier Village for the Fall 2023 semester.

Justine DeFronzo ’09 B.S./’13 MBA has dedicated her career to the care of others. She serves as President of New England Sinai Hospital in Stoughton, Massachusetts, overseeing all clinical, operational, and financial functions to ensure and enhance quality patient care. With more than 20 years of experience at Carney Hospital, Norwood Hospital, and Emerson Hospital, she now mentors nursing students in Massachusetts and New Hampshire. Justine’s passion for service extends to the local community, where she has taken on the role of Chair of the Board of Directors for the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Lowell.

Dr. Lauren Marsden ’12 M.Ed./’18 Ed.D. is a champion for education. She earned master’s and doctoral degrees at Rivier and focused her research and dissertation on the unique challenges and needs of first-generation college students. Following 10 years as a high school educator, Lauren now serves as Curriculum Coordinator at Winnacunnet High School in Hampton, New Hampshire.

Her professional accomplishments include the creation of a peer mentor program between inner-city students and college students, the creation and implementation of a freshman academy, and her appointment as a Fellow of the highly selective Granite State Leadership Academy. Lauren has received several awards and speaks nationally on student success.

The 2022 Alumni Achievement Awards highlight alumni leadership and service.

Carol Furlong ’01 MBA, guardian and advocate for mental healthcare services, is driven to help others realize their potential. For more than 40 years, Carol has helped build and operate programs to end veteran homelessness and to establish substance use treatment services in underserved communities. Carol was the Vice President of Operations at Harbor Homes in Nashua for 10 years before taking on her role as Director of Substance Use Services at Elliot Hospital in Manchester, New Hampshire. As a leader and mentor, Carol actively supports the next generation of mental healthcare service providers. She was named one of the top 25 Extraordinary Women in Greater Nashua in 2014, in recognition of her dedicated service to New Hampshire’s citizens and communities.

Joshua Muench ’16 B.S. is proudly defending our country overseas and at home. Currently serving in the U.S. Army Reserves, he also works as the Alternate Facility Security Officer at BAE Systems in Hudson, New Hampshire. Joshua helps to protect the facility and its employees from possible insider threats by handling alarm responses and conducting daily security investigations. His dedicated time in the military has helped him succeed in his career. He has been in the Army Reserves for the past four-and-a-half years as an All-Source Intelligence Analyst. In 2021, he deployed to Qatar where he was heavily involved in intelligence collection and management during the United States withdrawal from Afghanistan. Joshua received a challenge coin from a top U.S. Army General in honor of his service and camaraderie.

CATHERINE EAMES Devoted alumna and University supporter, Catherine Eames ’81 lives the Rivier mission. Her experience and example highlight the transformative power of education and service to others.

Since graduation, you’ve maintained a strong connection to the University and made significant investments in the education of Rivier students. Has education always been a priority in your life?

Catherine: I saw the importance of learning and education firsthand. My mother was the first person in her family to go to college. Subsequently, she was active in her alumni association, the Nashua College Club, and various volunteer activities in Nashua schools and the Boys and Girls Club. Both of my father’s parents were high school teachers in Lowell. And, my parents never stopped learning, whether it was experimenting with different cultivars to get the most out of a side-yard vegetable and flower plot, practicing a ping pong serve, or trying to speak a second language. There was always something to learn, and my parents encouraged and included our whole family in all these endeavors.

On several occasions you’ve said, “Miracles happen on South Main Street.” What sustains this belief?

Catherine: Rivier, like many colleges and universities, provides opportunities for growth and maturity and a pathway to a rewarding life. The “Miracles” part comes from the keen eye and open heart of Rivier’s staff and student body to bring out the best in every student. That doesn’t happen at many other places in the way

it happens at Rivier. Our students come to understand the extent to which Rivier is invested in them. The students dig down, see this love, and take advantage of the resources—academic, physical, financial, and mental—all offered in such a supportive way and to a degree that it appears as though a miracle has occurred.

How did your Rivier experience contribute to your belief in the transformative power of education?

Catherine: Sister Marjorie Francoeur, pm made a huge impact on my life; I believe her interest and support of me is emblematic of that provided by so many who choose the religious life to serve others. I didn’t feel in any way that I was getting special treatment; rather, I was one of many students in each of her classes. But I was at a point in my life when her message and style resonated with me. Sister Marjorie did not tolerate unprepared students, incomplete or missed assignments, or indifference to the subject matter—she wanted to bring out the best in every student. She wasn’t in the business of wasting time and really wanted to know what each of us thought.

I knew I was capable, but rarely had I been in the presence of someone who expected me to bring and be my best every day. As one of five kids, sometimes I could slide under the radar. That wasn’t possible in Sister Marjorie’s classroom, and I will forever be grateful to her.

Bringing out the best in others resonates in a variety of ways— education, service, and philanthropy.

What inspires your service to the University and greater community?

Catherine: My service is to provide the tools to make a positive difference in someone’s life. Sometimes my actions encourage others to also contribute, whether time, talent or money. I try hard to donate and contribute to organizations that I know have made a difference for me or someone in my life, organizations that take their mission seriously and are good stewards of the resources they have. Rivier, with its motto of “Higher and Better,” is the embodiment of an outstanding steward.

Your longstanding support of the University and students has made a difference in many lives. How would you encourage those who are starting out and inspired to make an impact?

Catherine: Making a difference in someone’s day doesn’t have to cost much.

If each of us looks around, there is always someone who could use a hand. Offer it freely and expect nothing in return. I’ve been amazed at the grateful responses to a smile or holding open a door.

The world is full of good people that often go unseen in our busy lives.

Go and make a difference.

Kyle Flanagan ’19 Baseball Information Assistant with the Detroit Tigers

MAKING HIS MARK IN THE MAJORS

Kyle Flanagan, Class of 2019, is making it in the big leagues as a baseball information assistant with the Detroit Tigers.

His work supports player development and the franchise's goal of winning the World Series. "If I can participate within the perspective of baseball operations to achieve the ultimate goal for our franchise, I'll know that my actions have contributed to a bigger picture." This is only the beginning for Kyle. He aspires to become director of scouting for a Major League Baseball team in the future. "I love everything there is about the game, and being able to use my Rivier business degree to pursue this career is a dream come true."

Diana Albu ’03G recently published a memoir detailing her family’s immigration journey from Transylvania to New England. Diana credits her success as a foreign language teacher to Rivier, where she was both a graduate student as well as a French adjunct faculty member.

Judith (Burke) Gedroiz ’67 is excited to announce the birth of her first grandson, Porter Stephen, on August 23, 2021.

1970s Mary Jo (Hines) Clark ’76 is enjoying her retirement with her husband Brian. She spent more than 20 years teaching anatomy and physiology as an associate professor at Horry Georgetown Technical College in South Carolina. Mary Jo now spends her time with the ministries at St. Mary Our Lady of Ransom.

1980s Colleen Hogan-Mazzola ’82 is currently living in Chelmsford, MA. After her time at Rivier, Colleen went on to obtain her M.Ed., a post-master's, and is presently completing an Education degree from the Graduate School of Education at Harvard University. Colleen shares she and her husband married at the University’s Resurrection Chapel in 1986. They have since raised two daughters.

Florence (Keefe) Canter ’85 is celebrating her retirement after 35 years in education. She most recently worked at the high school level as a long-term substitute teacher in Special Education in Bristol, VA.

2000s Jim Lewis ’01G just completed his 25th year in education and 20th year working as a firefighter in Hopkinton,

Kelly Gardner ’04/’06G recently finished her residency and fellowship training in pediatric pulmonary medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital. She is now a pediatric and adult sleep medicine fellow at Brigham and Women’s Hospital with the goal of becoming a pediatric pulmonary and sleep medicine specialist.

Bernadette Gourde ’08 is proud to announce her recent promotion to Finance and Control Manager at Trelleborg Wheel Systems Americas. She is also celebrating 10 years of progressive accounting and finance roles and achievements with the company.

Janell Davis ’09 recently received an award for her work as a Senior Director with the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Nashua. She was recognized as the 2021 Professional of the Year for her outstanding service to the profession and the youth they serve.

ClassNotes 2010s Andrea Braselmann ’14 is working as an aide at an all-women’s rest home in Amesbury, MA, where she teaches crafts to the residents and manages the front desk. Recently, Andrea began a new business venture selling her own jewelry at a local consignment store.

Jenelle D’Isidoro ’16 is excited to announce her engagement to Steven Wojtkiewicz of Londonderry, NH. After graduating from Rivier with her M.A.T., Jenelle taught English at Pinkerton Academy while Steven pursued his medical degree. They currently live in Norwalk, CT, where Jenelle teaches English at Danbury High School. They will be married July 16, 2022, in York, ME.

2020s Megan Pardoe ’21 was recently promoted to Relationship Associate II at Enterprise Bank. She currently works in the Nashua Main Street branch assisting customers with their accounts, recommending new products, conducting teller transactions, and auditing and training new branch members.

Angela Tafone ’21 recently became an Intervention Specialist at Ocean Avenue Learning Academy in New London, CT. She works with students who struggle with behavioral challenges. She shares that Rivier has given her the proper professional and social skills to be a valuable team member.
