HEARTS & MINDS SERVING THE WORLD Message from the President Dear Friends of Rivier, The past 18 months have brought both challenges and opportunities to our Rivier community as it has for many of you. It is with gratitude that we share stories in this issue that recognize the resilience of our students, the focus of our faculty on teaching and learning, the continuing vibrance of student engagement, a commitment to innovative and technologically sophisticated learning spaces, and most importantly, the unique conditions under which the mission of the University continues to flourish. This issue highlights Rivier’s recognition as the 2021 ‘Education Business of the Year’ by Business NH and the NH Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives. Truly a distinction earned by the entire University community, this award celebrates excellence as recognized by New Hampshire’s business community particularly in the areas of academic quality, workforce development, and service learning. You will share in the excitement of Rivier’s 86th Commencement ceremony which had special meaning as the University community celebrated the singular achievements of the Class of 2021. The ceremony provided an opportunity to remind our graduates of those times in which they embraced challenges with perseverance, gratitude, and a focus on service. Reimagining Sylvia Trottier Hall through Project Excel for nursing and Project Elevate for the Division of Business and Securities Studies is the next step to ensure that faculty and students have the resources to engage in real world learning experiences. Building on the components of the Science and Innovation Center, this capital renovation will provide the foundation for continuing enrollment growth and academic distinction. As we look ahead to the fall semester, the Rivier community will prepare to welcome one of the largest first-year classes in fifteen years and prepare for a comprehensive on-campus living and learning experience that will be embraced by all. Nursing alumni recognized for commitment to service The New Hampshire Nurses’ Association (NHNA) recently named Julie Williams ’21 (pictured with Rivier’s Dr. Judi O'Hara and Dr. Paula Williams and Dr. Pamela DiNapoli and Carlene Ferrier of NHNA) of Lowell, Massachusetts as the 2021 Student Nurse of the Year. Julie received this award in recognition of her professionalism, patient advocacy, leadership, and involvement in nursing and in community service. The Massachusetts Coalition of Nurse Practitioners honored Mary-Ellen Cooper ’03 with the 2021 Distinguished Nurse Practitioner Award. She is recognized for being a role model for excellence in the provision of health care services and for contributions to nurse practitioner education. In addition to her nursing practice, MaryEllen is co-founder and Vice President of Into Action Recovery, Inc., which maintains a 12-step sober living home in Tewksbury, Massachusetts.

Rivier proudly supports New Hampshire vaccination efforts This spring University alumni, faculty, and students took lead roles in the efforts to vaccinate New Hampshire and Massachusetts residents against the COVID-19 virus. Alumna Major Lindsey Whelan ’09 led the first Phase 1 clinic held in Nashua to vaccinate front-line personnel. Working as both a Trauma Program Manager at Elliot Hospital and a Chief Nurse for the NH Air National Guard Wing at Pease Air Force Base in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, Lindsey’s service extends beyond these roles into the community and around the globe. (See page 19) Rivier faculty and students volunteered at a mass vaccination clinic sponsored by and held at Fidelity Investments in Merrimack, New Hampshire in March. Seven faculty members, eight nursing students, and a public health student

assisted in vaccinating more than 2,500 people during the two-day clinic. The clinic was hosted by the Nashua Division of Public Health and Community Services, which is headed by Director Bobbie Bagley ’97/’14G. The effort focused on immunizing teachers, school staff, childcare workers, and those 50 and older in the Greater Nashua area. Throughout the past several months, faculty and nursing students volunteered to serve at additional COVID-19 vaccine clinics hosted by the Nashua Division of Public Health and Community Services and Lowell General Hospital. Embracing a real-world teaching opportunity, all junior class nursing students administered vaccines through Lawrence General Hospital

as part of their Community Health rotation during the spring semester. Clinical rotations also engaged students in providing telehealth services, enabling care virtually while protecting patients and nursing staff. “It is gratifying to see our nursing and public health faculty, students, and alumni continue their outreach to combat COVID-19,” says Dr. Paula Williams, Dean of Rivier’s Division of Nursing and Health Professions. “From working on the front lines with COVID-19 patients to donations of personal protective equipment and loans of telehealth and hospital equipment, to widespread vaccination efforts throughout the spring, the University and our community members have been active partners in delivering effective public health solutions.”

Biomedical research grants foster facultystudent research Three Rivier University biology professors have been awarded grants in support of projects that will engage students in authentic scientific research, training the next generation of researchers. The New Hampshire IDeA Network of Biomedical Research Excellence (NH-INBRE) grants were received through an Institutional Development Award (IDeA), P20GM103506, from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences of the National Institutes of Health.

Dr. Marie Elizabeth Ramas is the Medical Director at GateHouse Treatment, an addiction treatment center in Nashua. Currently, she serves on the Board of Directors for the New Hampshire Endowment for Health and is a member of several New Hampshire state medical and health assessment advisory councils. Dr. Ramas was honored with a Union Leader “40 under 40” Award in 2020. Dr. Michelle Beck’s research project will examine element concentrations in song sparrows across urban and rural habitats to determine if element concentrations have effects on stress and immune responses. Using songbirds as a model will allow Dr. Beck to determine if the elevated element levels could negatively impact human health as well. Dr. Tatiana Jones’ project will explore how extracellular ribonucleic acid (RNA) can influence activities of macrophages, white blood cells responsible for primary immune defenses. Student-researchers will learn how these cells are involved in responses of our immune system to different pathogens, including viruses. Dr. William Schmidt will investigate the targeted modification of muscle proteins in hopes of identifying potential biological mechanisms that can be modulated to alleviate or prevent disease. The project will determine if modification of a key muscle protein influences specific molecular interactions that determine muscle function, thus identifying

the protein as a potential target for consideration in future drug discovery and design studies. “Receiving three grant awards reflects our faculty’s dedication to academic excellence and the University’s commitment to innovation in the sciences,” say Dr. Brian Ernsting, Vice President for Academic Affairs. “Rivier’s new Science and Innovation Center was designed to advance faculty-student research and to elevate the student experience. The vision that built the new Center is realized in these projects.” The research projects are anticipated to begin this summer, and grant funds will support stipends for Rivier student-researchers.

Board of Trustees appoints local leaders Expanding its expertise in business strategy, healthcare, philanthropy, and workforce development, the University’s Board of Trustees welcomed four new members

Joseph Bellavance IV is the President of Bellavance Beverage Company, a major distributor of spirits and non-alcoholic beverages for New Hampshire retailers since 1902. Mr. Bellavance has strong ties with the local business community and is wellknown for his success in building the Bellavance business. Douglas Barker is Treasurer of The Barker Foundation, a private foundation that provides funding to social services, education, health, and youth organizations located primarily in Greater Nashua. Mr. Barker has served as a Trustee for Edgewood Cemetery for more than 25 years, as well as having held Board positions at Home Health and Hospice Care and the Hospice House Foundation. Keeva Davis ’00 is a Federal Project Officer specializing in workforce development for the U.S. Department of Labor’s Employment and Training Administration. She has maintained a close and supportive relationship with the University through support of her family’s scholarship fund, the Davis Family Minority Merit Scholarship. RIVIER TODAY / SPRING 2021

Healthcare and hygiene items were included, as well as donations of crafts, entertainment and outdoor activities, and a variety of other themed items. Representatives from Girls Inc., Marguerite’s Place, Nashua Children’s Home, Nashua PAL, Nashua Soup Kitchen, and the Front Door Agency came to campus and spoke to the firstyear students about the populations they each serve and the services they provide.

Thank you for supporting Day of Giving

A record level of participation and generosity resulted in a new milestone reached for the University’s annual Day of Giving in April. In just one day, alumni and friends donated more than $121,000 to support the Rivier University Fund and student scholarships. “Gratitude, appreciation, and thanks … simple words with deep meaning,” said Sister Paula Marie Buley, IHM. “Your record-breaking participation in Rivier’s annual Day of Giving is inspiring and energizing. Your continued generosity makes a difference in the lives of our Rivier students and allows all of us to continue to transform hearts and minds to serve the world.” This year, donations had double the impact through a generous gift from alumna Catherine Eames ’81, who 5

matched the first $10,000 received during Day of Giving dollar for dollar. Donors were able to designate their gifts to support scholarships, athletics, academic innovation, global engagement, or the area of greatest need. These gifts not only ensure access to a Rivier education, but a full and enriching experience that allows each student to reach their full potential. We thank all who donated on our 2021 Day of Giving and who support Rivier throughout the year!

First-year students provide impactful service

Each year, Rivier first-year students spend a day volunteering to serve nonprofit organizations throughout the Greater Nashua community. This year, students assembled tote bags filled with donations customized to meet the needs of each organization’s clients.

“Given limitations of the pandemic, Rivier collaborated with our Nashua community partners to identify the most impactful service project for our students,” says Kevin Cloutier, Experiential Learning Coordinator. “These are trying times for the people and families they serve; they’re struggling, and we were happy to help make a difference.”

Rivier rises to the top of college rankings

Rivier has been awarded top national ranking status for multiple nursing and business programs by two independent, higher education organizations. Nursing Schools Almanac has ranked Rivier in the top 100 U.S. nursing schools of 3,000 assessed. Institutions were evaluated on three critical dimensions: academic prestige and perceived value, breadth and depth of nursing programs offered, and student success, particularly on the NCLEX licensure examination.

NEWSWORTHY Welcoming alumni home The Office of University Advancement and Alumni Relations is planning an Alumni Reunion Weekend (September 25-26) that will celebrate two years of milestone reunions for 2020 and 2021. This year’s annual fall weekend celebration will recognize Reunion Classes ending in 0s, 1s, 5s and 6s.

We are honored by these top rankings for excellence in nursing education,” says Dr. Paula Williams, Dean of the Division of Nursing and Health Professions. “Consistently, Riviereducated nurses are hired and recognized for their strong clinical skills, compassionate care, and dedication to lifelong learning for improved patient outcomes.” Intelligent.com, an organization that provides unbiased research results to assist prospective students in making college selections, released its 2021 higher education resource guide ranking U.S. institutions based on an assessment of 2,277 accredited colleges and universities. Rivier has been recognized for earning the following national rankings:

“After postponing last year’s weekend, we are especially looking forward to welcoming all alumni back to campus for a special weekend celebration this fall,” said Karen Cooper, Vice President for University Advancement. Events will maximize outdoor venues and include a variety of social gatherings, activities, and Raiders athletics events. New this year, the University’s Student Government Association will sponsor a reception for our most recent graduates of the Classes of 2020 and 2021. A Tribute to Mr. Leon Brassard ' 97H

Trustee Emeritus

ommunity leader, philanthropist, and devoted friend, Trustee Emeritus Leon Brassard passed away peacefully on November 9, 2020. His legacy reveals a lifetime of love for his family, his faith, and the Greater Nashua community. An ardent supporter of Rivier, Mr. Brassard gave generously of his time, talent, and treasure. He served as a Rivier University Trustee for many years, as the Board Chair from 1991 to 2002, and as Chairman of the University’s first capital campaign from 2002 to 2007. Brassard Hall, which was dedicated in memory of his son Marc, the Chapel Plaza, and several Gateway Project initiatives stand in testimony of the Brassard family’s commitment to the Rivier community. An icon in the Nashua business world, he was the owner and operator of Heat Incorporated for nearly a half-century. He also served in leadership positions for the Nashua Trust Company, Nashua Memorial Hospital, Amoskeag Bankshares Inc., Nashua Charitable Foundation, and other business and financial entities. His philanthropy extended beyond Rivier University to several

local non-profit agencies including the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Nashua, New Hampshire Catholic Charities, and other organizations that serve to improve the lives of the less fortunate, especially children. Mr. Brassard and his wife Jan grew up in Berlin, New Hampshire, where they first encountered the Sisters of the Presentation of Mary. A man of deep faith, his dedication to the University honored the Sisters and the legacy they created at Rivier and throughout the world. In 1997, the University conferred an honorary Doctor of Business Administration degree upon Mr. Brassard in acknowledgment of his leadership and contributions to the University, the community, and the greater good. Blessed with daily reminders of our dear friend and benefactor, Mr. Brassard is greatly missed but will not be forgotten. His leadership, generosity, and commitment transformed the landscape of the University and the lives of many. Though we mourn his passing, we celebrate his strength, his spirit, and his grace.

Celebrating Innovation Rivier University honored as 2021 Education Business of the Year In recognition of numerous years of distinction and service, Rivier was selected as the 2021 Education Business of the Year by Business NH and the NH Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives. New Hampshire, preparing the largest number of nurses in the state and known for graduating exceptional teachers, educational administrators, and business/community leaders that serve at the forefront of New Hampshire industries and organizations. “The past year has brought both challenges and opportunities to our Rivier University community,” shares Sister Paula. “Through the flexibility, focus on student learning and living, and dedicated work, our mission of transformation was tested and the achievements of our community have been remarkable. Rivier has continued to show its agility and resilience and has remained a place of ideas. teach and learn, we continued to foster academic excellence and a vibrant campus community. During a time when businesses and organizations struggled to keep pace, Rivier maintained its focus on our core mission and commitment to reaching higher and better in all that we do.” says Sister Paula. Rivier ushered in a new era of innovation in the sciences through the completion of its Vision 2020 strategic plan. The 36,000-square-foot Science and Innovation Center, constructed in 2020, provides advanced preparation for the 21st-century workforce, especially for students majoring in biology, biotechnology, nursing, and public health.

The Center will serve the city of Nashua and beyond as a community resource for the pursuit of scientific discovery. The University offers academic excellence through programs that have earned national, regional, and statewide rankings and recognitions. A $1 million donation to create the Nursing Simulation and Clinical Education Center serves as the catalyst for the next phase of technology and learning. Project Excel, focusing on nursing simulation, and Project Elevate with its focus on business and security programs, will ensure Rivier students will be workplace ready through the use of technology and experiential learning. “A visionary benefactor who wishes to remain anonymous supports the next generation of nurses who will serve the Greater Nashua community,” says Sister Paula Marie Buley, IHM, President. “This donor has gifted Rivier students with an environment that will challenge them to 'think like a nurse' and model real-life medical scenarios, and faculty members with

laboratories that will foster hands-on learning and mentorship. This gift demonstrates the singular confidence in Rivier nursing programs that will enable the University to attract additional philanthropic support.” Following the opening of the Science and Innovation Center in September, Rivier’s commitment to the renewal of learning spaces continues with plans to renovate Sylvia Trottier Hall, home to the Division of Nursing and Health Professions, the Division of Business and Security Studies, and Information Technology Services. The 30,000 square-foot renovation will incorporate many elements of a professional environment that students will meet in their future workspaces. “Investment in the facility’s infrastructure, aesthetics,

and technology will foster next-level learning for our nursing, business, and security studies students,” shares Sister Paula. “In addition to our exceptional faculty and curriculum, students will learn in best in-class environments that model the realworld they will experience as they enter the workforce.” Rivier has long been at the forefront of simulation-based learning. “Rivier students will maintain their competitive advantage with access to the most recent hi-fidelity medical and cyber-security technology while integrating cognitive, technical, and behavioral skills necessary for success in the 21st century workforce,” says Dr. Brian Ernsting, Vice President for Academic Affairs.

Nursing Simulation and Clinical Education Center Sylvia Trottier Hall Front Entrance The hallmark of Project Excel will be the creation of the Nursing Simulation and Clinical Education Center with completely renovated teaching labs for nursing fundamentals, clinical assessment, community nursing, and telehealth simulation. The Center will be housed on the second level of Sylvia Trottier Hall and will include six simulation labs and assessment areas, two classrooms, a lecture hall, a suite of nursing administrative and faculty offices, and several areas for facultystudent interaction.

The new entrance has been designed as a place of welcome and interdisciplinary collaboration. Simulation labs will mirror the settings in which nurses most often provide care: medical/surgical and pediatric/neonatal hospital rooms, an obstetrics room, examination rooms, and telehealth offices. Designated labs will accommodate undergraduate nursing, public health, and advanced nurse practitioner training. “Students will experience patientcare situations that take place every day at hospitals, clinics, and homes

in the Nursing Simulation and Clinical Education Center,” says Dr. Paula Williams, Dean of the Division of Nursing and Health Professions. “As healthcare advances, Rivier adapts. The University’s commitment to providing students with a workforceready education is clearly reflected in its investment in Project Excel.” The projects will advance the University in a competitive marketplace, building on recent national and regional rankings.

Project Elevate will enhance the delivery of business programs in management, finance, marketing, sport management, cybersecurity management, and homeland security. “The renovations to Sylvia Trottier Hall will elevate our students’ experiences in many ways,” says Dr. Amir Toosi, Dean of the Division of Business and Security Studies. “The creation of a cybersecurity lab with advanced technology and the development of collaborative spaces for project-based learning will provide them with distinct advantages in their job searches and ability to advance their careers.” An open, collaborative environment is an important component of the project. A modern, spacious conference room will welcome students, faculty, alumni, and visitors at the entrance to the Division of

Business and Security Studies office suite. The Enterprise Zone will offer plenty of “huddle space” and will foster exciting opportunities for interaction and innovation. “Providing students with these settings allows them to experience firsthand the value of teamwork to reach business goals and to develop greater self-confidence personally and professionally,” says Dr. Toosi. The Division of Business and Security Studies expanded its degree options in recent years, adding Sport Management and Cybersecurity Management. Undergraduate programs in Business Administration, Business Management, Finance, and Marketing, as well as all MBA programs, are accredited by the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP), a global business education accrediting

body. ACBSP assesses and accredits business programs that offer a rigorous educational experience and commitment to continuous quality improvement. Rivier’s Office of Information Technology will share the lower level of Sylvia Trottier Hall. New offices, collaboration and workspaces, mechanical, electrical, and network rooms will be created for IT support personnel and technical services. Students will benefit from an IT Support Center offering an exceptional in-person tech support experience. The transformation of Sylvia Trottier Hall began in May and will continue through August 2022. The University has initiated a fundraising campaign to support the projects. Rivier University honors achievements of 2021 graduates at 86th Commencement

The University celebrated its 86th Commencement on May 17, awarding 607 degrees to associate, bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degree graduates. The event was held outside at Delta Dental Stadium in Manchester. “To the graduating Class of 2021, you are proof positive that the mission of Rivier University—transforming hearts and minds to serve the world—has taken root. Congratulations on your achievement. Congratulations on a day that marks both a formal conclusion and a new

beginning,” said Sister Paula Marie Buley, IHM, President. Student speaker Libby Machakos of New Boston, New Hampshire, earned her B.A. in Sociology, summa cum laude. She spoke with pride of her fellow graduates’ resiliency in the face of adversity. “To get to where you sit today took a significant amount of perseverance, focus, sacrifice, and hard work … Even when it seemed like the world was falling apart, we persisted. As the Class of 2021, we represent the next generation of doctors, nurses,

teachers, and entrepreneurs.” Favour Ayuk Tangban, an international student from Wuse Abuja, Nigeria, earned her Master of Education in School Counseling and spoke on behalf of graduate students. She addressed the shared mission of service embraced by the University and its graduates. “Rivier is a university that serves its community wholeheartedly. LINDSEY WHELAN A gifted nurse leader, Major Lindsey Whelan ’09 serves her community and her country. Integrity First, Service before Self, and Excellence in all we do, the U.S. Air Force’s core values, guide her in meeting life’s challenges. BY MICHELLE MARRONE

When did you realize your calling to nursing? Lindsey: Caring for others has always come very naturally to me. As a young adult, I cared for my grandfather through his lung cancer diagnosis and into hospice care until he passed. This early familiarity with healthcare, and nursing specifically, inspired my career choice. In high school, I took the Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) vocational program, which enabled me to get my LNA and solidified my desire to pursue nursing as a lifelong career. How has your career progressed? Lindsey: My first job was as a medicalsurgical staff nurse at Elliot Hospital. I loved that job, but my passion was always to work in the Emergency Department (ED). I took a position in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) when there weren’t any positions available in the ED and quickly fell in love with the ICU environment and critical care nursing. After a few years, I became a nurse manager, which brought me into the world of patient safety and quality. Today, I am the Trauma Program Manager for Elliot Health System, responsible for systems processes, quality patient outcomes, program development, community outreach, and accreditation standards for the American College of Surgeon’s Committee on Trauma verification as a Level II Trauma Center.

What drew you to military service? Lindsey: I was inspired by one of my Nursing Instructors, Pat Hagan, who served as a Navy Nurse. She gave a presentation on her experience and showed us pictures of her deployments. From that day on, I was interested in pursuing military nursing. I considered the Navy for a while and one night while working in the ICU, a co-worker said, “You know you could do all of this in the back of a cargo plane.” She was describing the Critical Care Air Transport Team (CCATT) mission at Pease Air National Guard Base. We researched the mission, and I was hooked. I commissioned into the Air National Guard in 2012 as a CCATT Nurse and began pursuing my career in Aerospace Medicine. At the same time, I was dual-trained to the CBRNE Response Force Package (CERFP), which is a homeland military medical response mission. The CERFP mission requires training in Incident Command Systems (FEMA), HAZMAT, biological/chemical warfare agents, and radiation exposure in addition to my critical care knowledge and skills. What are your responsibilities as Chief Nurse for the NH Air National Guard? Lindsey: As an Air Refueling Wing, our unit’s primary mission is refueling aircraft during both peace and wartime operations, and as the Chief Nurse,

I’m responsible for keeping our airmen fit to fuel so that our mission can continue. My service extends beyond Pease Air Force Base into the community. Most recently, I was called upon to take the lead in New Hampshire’s COVID-19 vaccination distribution. At the State Health Department’s Phase 1 clinic opening, I administered the first shots of the Moderna vaccine to City of Nashua frontline staff. What do you view as the greatest impacts of your service? Lindsey: For many years I felt the greatest impact I could make was to pursue every ounce of expertise, professionalism, leadership experience, and clinical skill I could obtain. My desire for impact was focused on what I, as an individual, could achieve. As I’ve grown, I’ve found the greatest impact I can make is to help others understand how they too can impact our community and those in our care. Individual efforts are futile in the face of a pandemic like we are experiencing now. Without authentic, transparent, and transformative leadership through change (or perhaps through chaos), we will all fail—the military has taught me that. Our greatest impact is not measured by my individual success, it is measured by the teams I help lead and their success stories.

Ivan Navarro ’16G Lead Clinician at Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Galveston–Houston in Texas

DRIVEN TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE

Ivan Navarro, Class of 2016, is the Lead Clinician at Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Galveston–Houston in Texas, where he oversees the youth mental health program. He leads a team of mental health counselors that provide services for underage immigrants, a population that is often vulnerable to trauma. “Seeing clients overcome their trauma is what drives me in my career,” he shares. “Most of the clients that I work with have been emotionally wounded by their traumas, so I work to give them the tools needed to help heal those wounds.” Ivan also makes a major impact in his community by participating in a service program that offers free counseling to those in need. “Knowing that there are people who need mental health counseling but are financially unable to pay for these services motivates me to be part of this program.” In addition to volunteering in his community, Ivan has hosted a radio show about mental illness, and has led initiatives to continue his work virtually since the start of the pandemic. Janet (Smith) Dalis ’69 had a quilt featured in the Sewing Machines Plus Quilting Festival, a six-day celebration of quilts and their makers sponsored by SewingMachinesPlus.com. Janet is an award-winning quilter whose work has been shown throughout the Northeast.

1990s Dr. Donald R. Burleson ’91G spoke in September 2020 at the annual conference of the American Cryptogram Association, giving a virtual lecture and slide show titled “A Statistical Technique for Isolating Vowels in a Ciphertext,” illustrating a mathematical method he had discovered some years ago. He and his wife Mollie live in Roswell, New Mexico, where Dr. Burleson retired in 2017 after teaching college mathematics for fifty years. He continues to engage in research in matrix theory. Joan Bienvenue ’99 has been selected as the first Executive Director of the Oak Ridge Institute at the University of Tennessee, established last year to align the expertise and infrastructure of Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the University in support of world-leading research and talent development. As director, she will also serve as a Vice Provost at UT.

2000s Christopher A. Giordano ’07 founded Gold Standard in June 2020. A basketball training program dedicated to helping players master the fundamental skills needed to become well-rounded basketball players, the program creates a positive and inclusive learning environment for players of all ages and skill levels.

2010s Frank Bourgeois ’13G was recently appointed Chief of Police at Bentley University in Waltham, Massachusetts. He shared, “My academic experience at Rivier University was contributory to the many professional opportunities I received, as well as the successes within those opportunities.” Joslyn Kuchinski ’13 joined the United Way as the coordinator for Greater Nashua Smart Start, a coalition made up of individuals and organizations that work together to ensure that every child in the community has the best possible start to life. “I am forever grateful to the Rivier Career Services team for setting me up with incredible networking opportunities,” she shares. “I am so blessed to have such a supportive alma mater even after graduation.”

Remote work, golf lessons, and exploring oceanfront golf courses provided a delightful respite. Jesse Harless ’16G released his second book, If Not You, Then Who?, in February 2021. Serving as a testimony of Jesse’s own addiction story, this book offers inspiration to those struggling with addiction and demonstrates how recovery is possible no matter the circumstances. He is also the author of Smash Your Comfort Zone with Cold Showers: How to Boost Your Energy, Defeat Your Anxiety, and Overcome Unwanted Habits. Samantha Pindara ’17G is a School Counselor at Lynnfield High School in Lynnfield, Massachusetts. This past fall, she took on the role of Varsity Field Hockey Coach and shares that she is excited to be working with students both on and off the field. Samantha Pearce ’18 has joined The Collaborative, a small nonprofit based in Londonderry, Vermont, as a Community Epidemiologist. “I entered Rivier's Public Health Program with the goal of becoming an epidemiologist,” she shares. “I am excited to have the opportunity to bring the skillset I developed at Rivier to my community!”

2020s Cameron Holdsworth ’20 is an Officer for the Durham Police Department in Durham, NH. He recently graduated from the Police Academy this past January and shares his excitement to serve his community. He credits Rivier for giving him the opportunity to give back and make a positive impact. Kayla Phelps ’20 is a Registered Nurse in the surgical/trauma unit at Concord Hospital in Concord, NH. “Beginning a nursing career in the middle of a global pandemic has been extremely challenging,” she shares. “Nevertheless, it’s been an exciting, rewarding journey, and I can’t wait to see where this continues to take me.” This past February, Eric Santos ’21G began working as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner at Lahey Behavioral Health BayRidge Hospital located in Lynn, Massachusetts. Eric also works as a Clinical Instructor for Salem State University.

Sister Cecile Gamache, pm Class of 1954 Sister Cecile Gamache, pm passed away peacefully on January 3, 2021, in Manchester. She served Rivier University and Catholic education with distinction for more than fifty years and inspired others with her dedication and financial stewardship. Sister Cecile earned a B.A. in Mathematics from Rivier and an M.A. in Mathematics from Boston College. Her ministry included teaching in New Hampshire elementary and high schools. A lifelong learner, Sister Cecile pursued post-graduate studies at the University of Rhode Island and the University of Notre Dame. She returned to Rivier to teach mathematics, serving as the Department Chair and in several key administration positions. Sister Cecile guided Rivier through decades of growth as Assistant Treasurer and as Assistant Vice President of Finance and Operations. Her work included the institution’s conversion to computerized systems, the development of banking and investment policies, along with expansion of the campus. She extended her service and leadership to Rivier as a member of the Board of Trustees and as a member of the Corporation. Sister Cecile’s contributions were recognized in 2006 with the Sister Madeleine of Jesus Award and in 2014 with a Doctor of Humane Letters, honoris causa. Sister Cecile’s legacy is marked by a forward vision and strong collaboration among faculty, administration, staff, and students. Her devotion to her faith, Catholic education, and Rivier continues to be an inspiration to all. 27
