HEARTS & MINDS SERVING THE WORLD Message from the President Dear Friends of Rivier, Breaking new ground is an apt metaphor for this issue of Rivier Today.

The history-making turn of the shovel celebrating the University’s new Science and Innovation Center and groundbreaking initiatives in academics, student life, and facilities are a continuation of the Rivier story that shapes students, faculty, and alumni.

The Science and Innovation Center will provide students and faculty with the most current environment for research and discovery. Already making strides in the biotech field, this issue features alumna Yvonne Sun ’06 and her groundbreaking work in accelerating approval of cancer therapies that empower the body to self-heal.

Breaking new ground in academic programming, the University received positive responses from accrediting organizations this spring for our undergraduate and graduate business programs, the Doctor of Nursing Practice, and the Doctor of Psychology in Counseling and School Psychology degrees. These external recognitions are an acknowledgement of the faculty’s thoughtful and intentional design of quality curricula.

Construction of the Athletics Pavilion and upgrades to Raider Diamond continued through the fall and spring. This initiative takes on special meaning as the Board of Trustees passed a resolution to rename Raider Field as Joanne Merrill Field, honoring Joanne’s forty years of service as Director of Athletics. The dedication of this new facility will take place on September 21, 2019, during Alumni Reunion Weekend.

Finally, this year’s Commencement ceremony celebrated nearly 600 graduates. The photos in this issue capture the joy and sense of accomplishment of that day—a day in which you share, because it is only through your support that a Rivier education continues to break ground in transforming hearts and minds to serve the world.

Rivier faithful make a pilgrimage to Panama World Youth Day 2019 was held in Panama City, Panama from January 21-28.

World Youth Day is an international event promoted by the Catholic Church. In 19841985, Pope John Paul II was inspired to create this religious event with the vision that young people from around the world would converge on a host city without barriers of race, culture, or social class.

Ten Rivier University pilgrims attended this popular celebration, trekking to and traveling through World Youth Day events. With the coordinated efforts of Rivier University’s Office of Global Engagement, three chaperones and seven students made the pilgrimage to the southernmost country in Central America to share faith experiences with young people from all corners of the world.

First-year students donate hundreds of service hours Hundreds of first-year students and staff participated in the annual First-Year Students Day of Service.

Descending on ten Greater Nashua non-profit organizations in carefully orchestrated teams, students helped with a variety of indoor and outdoor spring cleaning projects, trail clean-up at Nashua parks, donation sorting, and social activities at the PLUS Company.

Rivier’s community partners hosting students for this year’s event included Family Promise of Southern New Hampshire at Anne Marie House, the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Nashua, Girls Inc., Habitat for Humanity Restore, Harbor Homes, the Hunt Community, Nashua Parks and Recreation, the Police Athletic League (PAL), the PLUS Company, and YMCA Camp Sargent.

Two groups of students volunteered their time and talents on campus to a roadside clean-up project and to the Biology Club’s Charitable 5K Road Race, held in celebration of Earth Day. This annual event raises funds for the Beaver Brook Association nature center and conservation area in Hollis, New Hampshire.

Raiders Volleyball team takes GNAC Championship … again The Men’s Volleyball team took the 2019 Great Northeast Athletic Conference championship, capturing their 9th overall GNAC championship.

The Raiders, nationally ranked at #12, went on to the NCAA Division III Men’s Volleyball Quarterfinals where they lost to the #1 seed Springfield College.

Coach Kolek became a member of the 500-Win Club and was named GNAC Coach of the Year for the fourth time.

Volleyball alumni returned to Rivier for the annual Men’s and Women’s Volleyball Alumni Games this winter.

The DNP Professional Practice Track is designed for Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs) to elevate their clinical nursing careers. Newly launched for summer 2019, the Systems Leadership Track offers two entry options: one for Master of Science in Nursing graduates and another for non-nurse practitioners with a BSN and a master’s degree in a field outside of nursing. This track prepares nurses for leadership and management roles creating or redesigning systems to meet healthcare market demands.

During the weekend, the Men’s Volleyball team unveiled their 2018 GNAC championship banner in the Muldoon Center.

Rivier expands Board of Trustees with expertise in literary and security sciences The University has appointed two new members to its Board of Trustees: Dr. Reginald A. Wilburn of Dover, New Hampshire, and Mr. Daniel Sauvageau, MBA ’95G of Windham, New Hampshire.

Dr. Wilburn is an associate professor of English at the University of New Hampshire, specializing in African American literature and culture, the poet Milton, and intertexuality studies; he teaches the art of critical thinking, reading, and writing through the science of literary study.

Expanded Doctor of Nursing Practice degree receives accreditation

“Their unique knowledge augments the depth and breadth of our leadership team, informing and aiding the University in this critical period of expansion,” says Sister Paula Marie Buley, IHM, Rivier’s President.

The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) has approved accreditation for the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) with three track options. The DNP prepares clinical nurses and nurse leaders for the highest level of care and innovation in today’s dynamic and complex healthcare environments.

Safeguarding data and personnel for Fidelity Investments, Sauvageau serves as Chief Security Officer and is responsible for a team of more than 300 security professionals performing operations, investigations, due diligence, and background vetting functions for the company’s businesses across North America, Europe, and Asia.

“Nurses are taking on greater roles in patient care, and healthcare system and policy creation,” says Dr. Paula Williams, Dean of the Division of Nursing and Health Professions.

“Rapidly changing healthcare needs and shortages of providers are being addressed by an increasingly educated and engaged nursing workforce.”

Psy.D. achieves national accreditation status Rivier's Doctor of Psychology in Counseling and School Psychology (Psy.D.) received accreditation on contingency by the American Psychological Association (APA), which grants national accreditation for programs in health service psychology.

The program prepares graduates to obtain licensure as professional psychologists. Rivier is one of only two institutions in New Hampshire to receive APA accreditation for doctoral training programs in psychology.

“Applicants across the nation seek programs distinguished by APA accreditation,” says Sister Paula Marie Buley, IHM, President. “This national credential ensures students that their education will meet the highest standards of their profession and will position them for achievement in their field.”

Accredited on contingency is the status granted to programs that meet APA standards but are new enough that they do not have the outcome data required for full accreditation. The University will apply for full accreditation within three years.

Cybersecurity experts speak at President’s Circle Leadership Forum This spring, the President’s Circle Leadership Forum “Cybersecurity: The Evolving Threat Landscape and What Every Business Leader Needs to Know” offered vital information on cyberattacks and how to protect critical business resources and brand reputation.

Featured speakers included Jeremy Hitchcock, founder and CEO of Minim and previous founder of Dyn; Michael West, Vice President of Cyber Investigations at Fidelity Investments; and Jason Climer, New Hampshire Protective Security Advisor, Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, with the U.S. Dept. of Homeland Security and a member of Rivier’s Security Studies Advisory Council.

West and Climer highlighted the importance of information sharing and vigilance in data protection, while Hitchcock addressed data security in our homes. “Cyberattacks are easy,” said Hitchcock. “The threat in 5

the home is now a big threat. Invest in defending your information. Be thoughtful and take the simple steps to protect your data, like security software and two-factor authentication.”

A timely discussion, Rivier launched a new bachelor’s degree in Cybersecurity Management for fall 2019 based on student interest and high projected U.S. employment demand in this field. The curriculum focuses on cybersecurity management, business, computer science, and homeland and international security.

Professor Emeritus status awarded to retiring faculty The title of Professor Emeritus is awarded to retired professors who have made significant contributions of academic leadership to their institutions and to their fields of study.

Three professors celebrating retirement from the Rivier faculty this year have been named Professors Emeritus: Dr. Diane Connell, Professor of Education; Dr. Paul Cunningham,

Professor of Psychology; and Sister Lucille Thibodeau, pm, Ph.D., Professor of English and Writer-inResidence.

Letters of support from their peers detailed the professors many accomplishments in long service to the University, as well as their contributions to the body of knowledge in their respective disciplines.

“Professors Connell, Cunningham, and Thibodeau life’s work has enriched the academic community at Rivier and beyond, as well as the education of countless students,” says Dr. Douglas Howard, Vice President for Academic Affairs. “While Emeritus status recognizes past achievements, I am confident these professors will use their newfound time to continue the pursuit of knowledge with energy and dedication.”

Business programs awarded ACBSP accreditation Rivier’s undergraduate business programs in business administration, business management, finance, and marketing, as well as the University’s Master of Business Administration programs, have been accredited by the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP).

Is there a doctor in the house?

Yes! In fact, four professors in our Division of Nursing and Health Professions received their doctorates this spring!

Assistant Professor Dr. Tracy Hardy received her Doctor of Nursing Practice degree, one of the first DNP graduates of Rivier’s program. Her scholarly project is titled Firefighter Occupational Cancer Risk: Starting the Conversation.

Instructor Dr. Nancy Gallagher, also a graduate of Rivier’s inaugural DNP class, completed her scholarly project on The Implementation of a Physical Activity Group at a Community Mental Health Center: A Pilot Quality Improvement Project to Reduce Depressive Symptoms in Adolescents with Major Depressive Disorder.

Assistant Professor and Director of Undergraduate Nursing Education Dr. Judi O’Hara received her Doctor of Education in Leadership and Learning degree from Rivier. Her dissertation focuses on The Emotional Intelligence Education of Undergraduate Nursing Students.

Assistant Professor and Director of Graduate Nursing Education Dr. Donna Proulx received her Ph.D. in Nursing with a focus in Health Promotion from the University of Massachusetts Lowell. Her dissertation is titled The Lived Experience of Postpartum Women Attending Outpatient Substance-Abuse Treatment for Opioid or Heroin Addiction.

The community thanks them for their dedication to lifelong learning and contributions to the field of nursing.

“Accreditation by the ACBSP affirms the quality of our business programs,” says Sister Paula Marie Buley, IHM, President. “In the U.S. alone, there are 4,300 colleges and universities.

ACBSP accredits business programs at fewer than 1,200 campuses across 60 countries. This is a remarkable distinction.”

Based on the Baldridge Education Criteria for Performance Excellence, ACBSP accreditation evaluates aspects of leadership, strategic planning, relationships with stakeholders, quality of academic programs, faculty credentials, and educational support to determine whether business programs offer a rigorous educational experience and demonstrate continuous quality improvement.

“Rivier University has shown a commitment to teaching excellence and to the process of quality improvement by participating in the accreditation process,” said ACBSP Chief Accreditation Officer Dr. Steve Parscale. “This accreditation is evidence that Rivier is committed to providing the highest quality business education for its students.”

RIVIER REMEMBERS Brother Paul Demers— teacher, chaplain, mentor, and friend

T

he Rivier and Greater Nashua communities, and Brothers of the Order of the Sacred Heart, mourn the loss of Brother Paul Demers, S.C., who passed away peacefully on March 29, 2019, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Brother Paul served Rivier University for 30 years with uncommon faithfulness and a ministry of kind and gentle presence. Always a teacher at heart, he instructed students in bioethics, peace studies, and world religions. He recognized the value of active learning and often had his classes participate in conferences and community activities. Brother Paul was particularly committed to the work of ecumenism and the value of interfaith dialogue and engagement.

As University Chaplain, he prepared individuals for the sacrament of marriage and initiation into the Catholic Church. His celebration of Liturgy in Resurrection Chapel

brought together the Sisters of the Presentation of Mary, students, faculty, and friends of the University.

A devoted Raiders fan, Brother Paul exercised a special ministry to our student-athletes through his presence and encouragement.

Cheering on the sidelines, Brother Paul took pride in generations of Raiders he faithfully mentored and supported.

Those who knew Brother Paul recognized that he was first a Brother of the Sacred Heart. He lived the spirit of his congregation and their charism as quoted, “Our dedication to others, marked by respect, kindness and concern, will be a sign to them of the compassion of Christ.�

As a community, we are grateful to Brother Paul not only for his service and works seen, but also for the quiet good and compassion known only to the Lord. His memory will serve as an inspiration to all who knew and loved him.

From weeklong to semester-long trips, Rivier students expand their worldview through study abroad.

This year a record number of students took advantage of opportunities to study in Australia, Ireland, and Italy, or to participate in academic and cultural service trips to Belize, Costa Rica, and the Dominican Republic. A group of students traveled to Panama for World Youth Day, which included a Mass celebrated by Pope Francis for the more than 700,000 pilgrims that attended.

Through social media, student photos and blogs, and presentations hosted by the Office of Global Engagement, students shared their study abroad experiences.

INNOVATION IN THE SCIENCES

The University community celebrates monumental groundbreaking Rivier marked the newest chapter in its history, breaking ground on the construction of a 35,000-square-foot Science and Innovation Center in April.

Dedicated to expanding teaching and learning in the sciences, the facility will serve as a beacon for the city of Nashua and beyond, providing a community resource for the pursuit of scientific discovery. The Center is a priority in the University’s strategic plan Vision 2020.

Before a standing-room-only audience of students, faculty, staff, alumni, and friends, University and community leaders offered insights on Rivier’s contributions to education and workforce development. “All of our dreams and expectations can be joined in the belief that the Science and Innovation Center will provide opportunities to harness one of the great gifts of humanity—the power of curiosity to seek, to discover, to create, and to expand knowledge,” said Sister Paula Marie Buley, IHM, Rivier’s President. “This is no small task in today’s world to seek the truth, to apply evidenced-based theory, and solve problems in the service of true human freedom and advancement.”

Representing the city of Nashua, Mayor Jim Donchess applauded the University for its contributions to the workforce development of the region. “This state-of-the-art facility will expand Rivier’s contributions to the life sciences workforce in Nashua and throughout New Hampshire,” said Mayor Donchess. “This will add

to the significant contributions that the University makes every year to our nursing workforce, educating the largest number of nurses throughout the state.”

enhancing the general education of all Rivier students. The facility will feature learning spaces that foster experiential learning, laboratories and equipment designed to solve real-world problems, technology that brings science into the classroom, and collaborative spaces for faculty and student research.

Chair of the Board of Trustees Dianne Mercier provided perspective on the University’s commitment to its students and the community-at-large.

“Today, we celebrate a new milestone,” said Mercier. “We are growing our commitment to student and faculty research and hands-on learning to prepare for the 21st-century workforce. We are expanding our contributions to the state, the region, and beyond, through workforce development in the life sciences, and we are marking our place as an institution dedicated to innovation and discovery.”

The Science and Innovation Center groundbreaking follows construction of the Athletics Pavilion currently underway and scheduled to open this fall. The new facility will turn the athletics field into a stadium, elevating the game-day experience for Raider athletes and fans. The Pavilion will provide stadium seating, locker rooms, team rooms and conference space, a training room, and a press box with an enhanced sound system.

The University will dedicate the new facility during Alumni Reunion Weekend on September 21 and will recognize the naming of Joanne Merrill Field.

This distinction honors Merrill for creating an athletic environment of integrity, service, and leadership for both coaches and student-athletes, while also contributing to the University, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), and the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC).

“Joanne's distinguished career deserves nothing less than this honor,” says Sister Paula Marie Buley, IHM, Rivier’s President.

“Her dedication, vision, and enthusiasm for Rivier Athletics have been and continue to be a gift to the University and to the thousands of student-athletes who have competed under her leadership.”

Appointed to the role of Director of Athletics in 1980, Merrill has led the program to more than 25 championships. She is credited with ushering in the era of men’s athletic programs in 1991, when Rivier went co-ed, and served as the first men’s volleyball coach.

In 2009, the GNAC named Merrill Administrator of the Year with accolades for being a role model and mentor for young administrators. Prior to the NCAA sanctioning Men’s Division-III Volleyball in 2011, the North East Collegiate Volleyball Association named founding member Joanne Merrill to the NECVA Hall of Fame. Also recognized within the local community as an educator, coach, and mentor to countless student-athletes, Merrill was named one of the 25 Extraordinary Women in Greater Nashua by The Telegraph in 2014.

The University is making a major investment in New Hampshire’s nursing workforce by awarding 10 Project Advance scholarships to licensed practical nurses (LPNs) employed at Catholic Charities New Hampshire rehabilitation and long-term care nursing centers. Project Advance scholarships enable the recipients to earn an Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) degree, which is a prerequisite to licensure as a registered nurse, without financial burden.

These scholarships are made possible through the $300,000 gift of a Rivier University donor. “It is the vision of a generous and anonymous donor to fund 10 Project Advance scholarships, which include full tuition, books, and fees for employees of Catholic Charities New Hampshire,” says Sister Paula Marie Buley, IHM, Rivier’s President. “Ten students will be able to complete their associate degrees without interruption and will go on to proudly write the letters ‘RN’ after their name.”

The project was announced in February 2019, and the opportunity was presented to Catholic Charities New Hampshire LPNs at their eight facilities throughout the spring. Those accepted into the ASN nursing program and awarded the scholarship will begin their program in the upcoming fall semester.

“Our healthcare professionals work to bring compassionate care and healing to the lives of our residents every day,” says Tom Blonski, President & CEO of Catholic Charities New Hampshire. “To be able to make such a profound difference in the lives of our LPNs is a gift. This initiative will be lifechanging for the Project Advance scholarship recipients, and its impact will extend into the facilities they work within and to the individuals they care for.”

The Project Advance scholarship program offers wideranging personal, institutional, and community benefits.

Commencement 2019 celebrates graduates and highlights diversity and opportunity The University celebrated its 84th Commencement on May 11, awarding 594 degrees to doctoral, postmaster’s, master’s, bachelor’s, and associate degree graduates.

The ceremony highlighted the importance of diversity and opportunity as fuel for individual achievement and community impact.

In recognition of his dedication to the University, his devotion to the pursuit of human and spiritual connection through community building, and his service to others, an honorary doctorate was conferred upon Brother Paul Demers, S.C., posthumously.

Brother Paul served as Associate Professor of Religious Studies and the University Chaplain for 30 years. (See page 7.)

The University also honored Rebekah Splaine Salwasser with an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree. Ms. Salwasser is the Executive Director of the Red Sox Foundation, and a former NCAA Division I and professional soccer player with the Boston Breakers. A fierce advocate for education and for sport as the means through which youth can realize their greater potential, Ms. Salwasser’s experience highlights the integration of academic and athletic success, which shapes

her distinguished career and life of service.

Ms. Salwasser’s Commencement speech addressed the value of diversity in all aspects of life and the positive aspects of sport on academic and professional achievement. “I loved to play because sport is a neutralizer,” said Salwasser. “When you’re in the middle of a game, there’s no popular or rich kids, there’s no cliques or teacher’s pets … in the moment of play, none of that matters. It’s about the output of each participant, regardless of size, color and wealth. The values and competencies I learned on the field directly correlate with my success in my career.”

On behalf of the undergraduate class, student speaker Rebeca Cruz spoke on the opportunity of education and the importance of community. Chunhua Chi, representing graduate students, commented on the transformative power of diversity and inclusivity in the educational experience.

Waging a Battle Against Cancer

Meet Yvonne Meticulous and highly motivated, Yvonne Sun ’06 spends her days pouring over paperwork. Not sales reports or stock projections, but test reports and compliance materials that will bring new technologies, treatments, and hope to cancer patients.

Leading a quality assurance team at a Boston biopharmaceutical firm, Yvonne builds the bridges that transport new medicines and immunotherapies from the laboratory to the marketplace.

"TO GOD THROUGH SCIENCE" These words graced the façade of Mendel Hall for 60 years.

In service to the relief of human illness and suffering, this maxim stands ever true.

Choosing a path Yvonne recognized her aptitude for math and science early in life and earned undergraduate degrees in biotechnology and biology. Pursuing a career in biotechnology, Yvonne held positions of increasing responsibility at several Massachusetts firms before taking on her current role as Senior Quality Assurance Manager at Ziopharm Oncology.

Ziopharm’s research and development projects focus on developing new gene and cell therapies that harness the power of the body’s immune system to fight blood cancers and solid tumors. These immunotherapies stimulate immune system cells to locate, target, and destroy foreign cells in the body.

As a quality assurance manager, Yvonne is responsible for quality control of the company’s clinical trials focused on chemistry, manufacturing, and controls. “My primary function is to ensure manufactured clinical material meets predefined specifications for the following attributes: safety, integrity, strength,

purity, and quality. A large portion of what I do is to review and ensure various departments operate within FDA guidelines and regulations.”

Yvonne embraces a spirit of persistence in her work. According to the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America, “… it takes at least ten years for a new medicine to complete the journey from initial discovery to the marketplace, with clinical trials alone taking six to seven years on average.”

“A typical day is reviewing lots and lots of documentation, such as executed manufacturing batch records and test methods including their results,” Yvonne shares. “Although no one in Quality wants a deviation to occur, I find it the most enjoyable to be a part of an investigation team. I love making process improvements and defining root causes to why an issue occurred and how we are going to fix it.”

Gaining momentum Building on her Rivier foundation, Yvonne became a certified Root Cause

Analysis and Incident Investigator and earned a Graduate Certificate in Regulatory Affairs, Biologics, and Medical Devices. Her studies focused on the ways new drugs, treatments, and medical devices are evaluated and regulated by the FDA, equipping her to manage the regulation process.

Hard work and her credentials prepared her to take on the management role at Ziopharm, and they will be especially useful as the company enters the next phase of clinical trials on a promising new cancer immunotherapy.

Ziopharm announced recently that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has granted Fast Track Designation for its Controlled IL-12 program, a treatment for recurrent or progressive glioblastoma multiforme in adults. This disease recurs in almost all patients. Presenting as brain tumors, recurrent glioblastoma multiforme is an aggressive and life-threatening cancer of the central nervous system for which there are currently few treatments and no cure.

The FDA's Fast Track Program is an expedited drug development and

review process for new drugs that will treat serious conditions and have demonstrated the potential to fill an unmet medical need. A drug granted Fast Track Designation is eligible for priority review and accelerated approval, if it meets the necessary criteria.

Yvonne and her team will play a key role in the Fast Track process.

“My goals are to help put in place the appropriate critical quality attributes and critical process parameters to meet Phase III expectations,” she shares. Phase III clinical trials are the

final hurdle before a drug receives FDA approval as a therapeutic option.

Making a difference The results from previous clinical trials are promising. The Controlled IL-12 program drove T cells deep within a tumor for weeks to months at a time, initiating and sustaining an attack on the cancer cells. Recurrent glioblastoma patients treated with the Controlled IL-12 program experienced shrinking tumors and improved survival rates.

“This means everything to me,” says Yvonne. “I love waking up knowing that I am working towards treatments and cures to bring a level of quality of life which [patients] didn’t have previously … I feel as though everyone has had some direct or indirect experience with cancer, and it continually impacts so many lives in both positive and negative ways.”

Yvonne focuses on the positives.

Her work is truly making a difference in the lives of patients, helping each to wage and, with hope, win their internal battle.

I never really thought of myself as someone who could inspire others. Now I am confident I can take on leadership roles and be in a position to help others.

Rebeca’s story shows us what is possible when students are given the opportunity to reach their full potential. Rebeca is a first-generation student and without scholarship support, she would not have been able to attend Rivier. Nearly all of our students receive some form of need-based financial aid. Since your graduation, you have continued to live Rivier's mission of transforming hearts and minds to serve the world. How did your education encourage and prepare you for community outreach work?

Christina: I had the opportunity to serve in student government and help lead my class. This helped me to understand the need to rally people around a mission.

More importantly, the culture at Rivier inspired me. We were encouraged to be engaged members of the Riv community as well as the greater community. It was part of what we did. Everyone at the University speaks the language of giving back but are able to do it in their own way. When I graduated, I didn’t want to leave that culture and the feeling I had from being a part of it. I made a promise to myself to find ways to stay true to these values and ensure my family understands and has similar opportunities.

You and your husband David generously share your time, talent, and treasure with the University and other educational organizations.

Why is education a priority in your philanthropic giving?

Christina: Simply put, we want other students to have the same opportunities we did. The youth are our future, and we want to help set them up for success. If we can play a small part in making that happen, our goal will be fulfilled.

You and David make annual gifts to the University on our Day of Giving.

Is there a special connection to giving on that day?

Christina: Rivier’s Day of Giving is a day of pride. We would give regardless of the day, but being part of something bigger is powerful. We could give individually, but we join an engaged and motivated community on one day and with one goal—to make a difference.

Fidelity makes substantial investments in the local community. What role do you play in these efforts?

Christina: Fidelity is passionate about making a difference in everything we do. The Fidelity Cares program provides employee volunteer opportunities that support students and families with the educational foundation to attain personal and financial success. In my current role, I ensure the firm’s community engagement activities remain focused on education and financial literacy while making an impact on the communities where we work and live. I am directly responsible for Fidelity’s volunteer programming and other nonprofit funding across New Hampshire, with influence on initiatives across the country.

You and your husband devote a good deal of time to service. Do your children take part in your efforts?

Christina: We believe it is essential to instill these values and the sense of giving back.

With our four-and-a-half-year-old twin

boys, we try to keep it simple, but involve them where we can. It may be selecting some toys to donate to children or picking out some preemie outfits to donate to The Mom’s Place at Catholic Medical Center, where we lived for the first three-and-a-half weeks of their lives. First and foremost, we ensure the words “THANK YOU” are part of their vocabulary. Those two words can sometimes go further than any item.

As they grow, we will find additional opportunities to involve them in the community. We will help them to determine what they are most passionate about and how to be an engaged citizen.

In addition to your service to Rivier, you volunteer on the Board of Directors at NH Scholars and at NH Jobs for America’s Graduates. What meaning does giving have in your life?

Christina: I often ask myself, “How would I feel if I was in a difficult situation?” Whether I am giving back in my personal life or partnering with non-profit organizations in my professional life, I try to remain humble.

I am incredibly grateful for everything life has provided me, but don’t take that for granted. I don’t look at service as what is in it for me. However, if I am able to put a smile on one child’s face, if I am able to let a struggling mom know people care, if I am able to support an educational institution that is going to produce strong and engaged citizens, if my children continue to grow asking how they can give back, then I feel complete.

Matthew Bynon ’15 Director and Cofounder of Mill City Volleyball Club

ENTREPRENEURIALISM AND EMPOWERMENT THROUGH SPORTS Matthew Bynon, Class of 2015, cofounded Mill City Volleyball Club in Lowell, MA, with Terry Matatall ’15. This one-of-a-kind facility offers a family-friendly environment with a competitive atmosphere that promotes player development in the sport. Seeing a need and the potential for growth, Matthew was motivated to provide this opportunity to the Greater Lowell community. His goal is to educate, mentor, and grant local youth the opportunity to play volleyball at a competitive level. With Matthew’s entrepreneurial leadership, Mill City Volleyball Club has grown to 175 players in just three years’ time.

1940s Jacqueline Lessard Finn ’49 published her retirement project book From Habitants to Immigrants: The Sansoucys, the Harpins, and the Potvins. She had several book talks and signings happening in her local public libraries this spring. She proudly shares that she is 90 years old, and this project took 15 years to research, write, and publish.

Vincent Donovan ’91G released his second novel, A Difficult Crossing, in October 2018. He is also the author of Chasing Mayflies. Vincent is a two-time quarter finalist in the highly competitive “Amazon Breakthrough Novel Contest.”

For more than 27 years, he worked in various leadership positions in the biopharmaceutical industry.

1980s In retirement, Mary Bui Nguyen ’63 and her husband, Cuong, moved to San Jose, CA. In 2009, they opened Pho Wagon, a restaurant specializing in its namesake soup and other Vietnamese cuisine. Mary shares that the restaurant keeps them active and allows them to spend time with family and friends.

Retired now and living in Maine, Anita Denis ’68 spends her winters in Cascais, Portugal. She enjoys the beautiful sunny and warm climate of this beach resort located just west of Lisbon, Portugal’s capital city.

Judi Lindsay ’93G completed a 500mile pilgrimage on the El Camino de Santiago in Spain. She is pictured (on right) with her friend Barb Robidoux at the Cross at Cape Finisterre. Judi retired after 23 years at the Moore School in Candia, NH, where she served as the Minds in Motion Enrichment and Challenge teacher.

Colonel John O’Shea, USA, Retired ’80G (above right) and Colonel John Ionoff, USA, Retired, presented wreaths at the WWII Memorial, Korean War Veterans Memorial, Vietnam War Veterans Memorial, and at the Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington National Cemetery last November to honor all who have served our nation. Colonel O’Shea serves as Mid-Atlantic Chapter Commander, U.S. Army OCS Alumni Association.

Diana Mears ’93 became the Director of Strategic Solution Engineers at Datastax in Santa Clara, CA. She manages a team of principal solution engineers who qualify, educate, and lead the design and adoption of real-time database solutions. Her team is responsible for the technical advisory and direction of Datastax’s largest, most complex architectures and valuable customer accounts.

ClassNotes Bruce D. Burleson ’94 recently started as the Day Treatment Director at South Bay Community Services in Brockton, MA. This non-profit agency provides services to people with severe and persistent mental illness.

After obtaining his B.S. in Chemistry, David Bienvenue ’95 went on to earn his Ph.D. in Biochemistry at Utah State University. He has been working in the biotechnology industry since 2001, developing novel therapies that utilize the patient’s own immune system to fight cancer. Currently, he is a Senior Director in the research group at Aptevo Therapeutics, where they have recently initiated human clinical trials for a new treatment for acute myeloid leukemia (AML).

Andrea Leaver ’03 opened Define Fitness in Dracut, MA, in January.

The 10,000-square-foot facility features exercise equipment, classes, and child care services. The gym maintains a philosophy of “Your Choices Define You!” and they provide tools to help individuals accomplish their goals.

Andrea is also the owner of Boathouse on the Water, a bar and grill in Dracut, MA. Kelly Gardner ’04/’06G is a pediatric pulmonology fellow at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. She completed her residency in pediatrics at Massachusetts General Hospital, after receiving her M.D. at the University of Vermont College of Medicine.

Jennifer Resmini ’08 has been named Dean of Faculty at Pinkerton Academy located in Derry, NH. Prior to her appointment, she taught in and served as the chair of the Social Studies Department. Jennifer was active in the Student Government Association while at Rivier and recently became a member of the Alumni Council.

John Sibley Williams ’08 won the 2018 Orison Poetry Prize for his fourth poetry collection As One Fire Consumes Another. A nineteen-time Pushcart nominee, he is also the recipient of the Backwaters Prize, Laux/Millar Prize, and Wabash Prize, among others. John is currently teaching literary arts at Portland Community College.

A Voice for the People Senator Lou D'Allesandro ’71G offers book talk at Regina Library Bondanza, at a spring reception in the Regina Library.

Senator D’Allesandro is an icon in New Hampshire politics. He has served in the Senate for 22 years, in the House of Representatives for 4 years, as well as spending 6 years as a member of the Executive Council, and 10 years on his local School Board.

After finishing three months of training in Cameroon, Africa, Hayley Parenti ’18 was sworn into the Peace Corps Cameroon in November. Hayley lives in the Adamawa region, which is the farthest north volunteers are allowed to serve. She works to empower women, educate the community, help with agriculture, and improve the health of the community. She is pictured above with her host family.

Hayley will be serving through December 2020.

New Hampshire State Senator Lou D’Allesandro shared thoughts from his new biography Lion of the New Hampshire Senate and Thoughts for Presidential Hopefuls, written by Mark C.

He credits his success to years of hard work, the loyal support of family and friends, and the cultivation of many relationships built on trust and service. “So many people have helped me along the way,” said Senator D’Allesandro. “Nobody does this by himself.”

The Senator continues to be a strong and familiar voice for the people of New Hampshire, ever ready with a warm handshake and an offer of help.

A graduate of the Class of 1954, receiving her bachelor’s degree in sociology, Sister Lorraine went on to earn a master’s degree from Boston University. In 1969, she began teaching in Rivier’s Sociology Department; ultimately, she served as the program director and department chair, and she designed the bachelor’s in social work program.

In addition to teaching at Rivier, Sister Lorraine worked at New Hampshire Catholic Charities as a clinical social worker and as a spiritual counselor.

Always open to the needs of others, Sister Lorraine served on the Board of Directors for Harbor Homes and the Board of Trustees for the Greater Nashua Interfaith Hospitality Network.

Most recently, she held the position of Rivier Archivist, preserving and providing valuable insight into the University’s rich history and heritage. She received the Sister Madeleine of Jesus Award from the Rivier Alumni Association in 2009 in recognition of her outstanding contributions and humanitarian efforts.

The University and Greater Nashua communities were blessed with Sister Lorraine’s kindness and spirit of bonhomie. Her memory lives on in the many hearts she touched.
