From the President Dear Friends of Rivier, I am pleased to announce several new initiatives that demonstrate the University’s vitality and innovation reinforced by the strength of our distinctive academic programs, committed faculty, global perspective and focus on active learning.

Rivier will offer the innovative Employment Promise Program to incoming students beginning this fall. This program enhances career preparation and employability of students in all academic disciplines by providing a specialized, four-year academic and career plan, as well as leadership opportunities that encourage self-investment and strengthen the connection between the classroom and career success.

Rivier recently launched a new online Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program for fall 2016. The DNP is a clinically

focused, terminal degree for advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs). Graduates will be prepared for leadership roles on multidisciplinary healthcare teams working to improve systems of care, patient outcomes, and population health.

The University has experienced remarkable growth in our graduate international student enrollments and expanded online enrollment with an emphasis on computer science, information management and biotechnology.

If you have visited recently, you have witnessed the impact of the Gateway Projects which have transformed our campus landscape along South Main Street. This summer the Campus Quad connecting the Dion Center, Trinity Hall, and Guild Hall will be reconstructed to

support additional green space and student recreation.

Rivier celebrated its largest graduating class—898 graduates —at our 81st Commencement ceremony in May. I invite you to read the stories about our exceptional students, faculty, and alumni that demonstrate Rivier’s mission of transforming hearts and minds to serve the world.

For the RECORD Board of Trustees expands with additional expertise in law and communications William H. Barry, III and Shelley Walcott have joined the University’s distinguished Board of Trustees.

Licensed to practice law in New Hampshire and Massachusetts, William H. Barry, III is a partner at Barry & Honorow, Attorneys at Law, in Nashua. He is a third generation Nashua native whose grandfather, William H. Barry, was mayor of Nashua from 1911-1914. Barry graduated from the College of the Holy Cross with an A.B. in Economics and received his Juris Doctor degree from St. Louis University Law School.

He has served as Nashua Rotary Club President, Nashua Soup Kitchen and Shelter President, Trustee of Southern New Hampshire Medical Center, and Commissioner of the Nashua Police Department. He has also served as a state representative in the New Hampshire House of Representatives. Currently, Barry is a member of the Board of Directors of the Village Network and a President’s Circle Leadership Committee member for Rivier University.

Shelley Walcott is an award-winning journalist and co-anchor of News 9 Tonight at 11 p.m. on WMUR and News 9 at 10 p.m. on MeTV New Hampshire. Prior to joining WMUR, she worked for CNN, the Sinclair Broadcast Group, and Journal Broadcast Group. A native of Montreal, Quebec, she holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Journalism and Political Science from Concordia University. She also earned a Diplôme Études Collégial in Social Sciences from Montrealʼs Vanier College.

Walcott has received a Gracie Award for a CNN TV series she produced on “The Teenage Brain,” a “Best Live Reporting” award from the Milwaukee Press Club, and a Merit Award for “Best Feature Story” from the Wisconsin Broadcasters Association. She is a member of the National Association for Black Journalists.

“Rivier University is fortunate to have Bill Barry and Shelley Walcott join its Board of Trustees,” says Sister Paula Marie Buley, IHM, Rivier’s President.

Rivier appoints new Vice President for Finance and Administration

The University welcomed Scott M. Fields as Vice President for Finance and Administration in April. Fields serves as Rivier’s chief financial officer and a key member of the President’s Cabinet. He provides executive leadership of the University’s finances and operations.

He is a skilled administrator, having worked at several universities throughout his career including Boston University, Suffolk University, and Harvard University where he was responsible for the strategic management of all administrative, financial, and staff operations at the Derek Bok Center for Teaching and Learning.

Fields completed Harvard University’s Leadership Development Program in 2012.

He holds an M.Ed. in Policy, Planning, and Administration and a B.S. in Administration from Boston University.

Presidentʼs Circle Leadership Forums welcome prominent business and government leaders

Former Governor Jeb Bush at the President’s Circle Leadership Forum.

Distinguished business and community leaders gathered for President's Circle Leadership Forums this spring. The President’s Circle hosted Governor Jeb Bush in January. During his talk, he advocated for effective U.S. leadership that advances conservative policies by not accepting the status quo. “Listen, learn, and lead with a servant’s heart,” said Governor Bush. “Government shouldn’t be the master; it should be the servant.”

Bush served as the 43rd Governor of the state of Florida from 1999 through 2007 and most recently campaigned for the 2016 presidential nomination. He joins several politicians who have participated in the University’s Leadership Forums, including mostly recently presidential candidate Carly Fiorina.

In May, the President’s Circle hosted a forum entitled “Challenges and Opportunities for New Hampshire Businesses.”

The event featured three chief executives: Howard Brodsky, CoFounder, Chairman, and CEO of CCA Global Partners; Michael L’Ecuyer, President and CEO of Bellwether Community Credit Union; and John E. Tulley II, President of Tulley Automotive Group.

The well-known leaders shared their insights on New Hampshire’s competitive business environment and the strategies that have led to their successes.

Opioid education event at Rivier advances dialogue within New Hampshire In response to rising opioid abuse in New Hampshire, Rivier University hosted an AnyOne.AnyTime.NH event in March. Created by the New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services, the program educates the public and professionals about addiction, emergency overdose medications, and support services for anyone experiencing opioid addiction.

The event was sponsored jointly by the University’s Public Health, Nursing, and Social Work programs, the Rivier Task Force on Alcohol, Tobacco and other Drugs, and the Counseling and Wellness Center. Nashua’s Mayor Jim Donchess addressed the gathering, thanking the University for opening the dialogue and being a resource to the community. Governor Maggie Hassan sent a written statement of support, and representatives from the offices of Senator Jeanne Shaheen, Senator Kelly Ayotte, and Congresswoman Annie Kuster attended the event.

The program featured a panel discussion with members of the medical, recovery, and law enforcement communities.

Nearly 100 attendees questioned panel members on the range and availability of treatment and recovery programs in New Hampshire and the use of Narcan, an antidote for the temporary reversal of opioid overdoses.

The panel advocated for greater awareness, education, and understanding of substance abuse; funding for prevention and treatment programs; expansion of community outreach programs and practitioners trained in treatment and recovery; and a shift to alternative therapies for pain management, such as yoga, acupuncture, and physical therapy.

DAY OF GIVING 5.5.16 Alumni and friends generously support second annual Day of Giving in May This year’s Day of Giving campaign raised more than $66,000, a record level of funds to support the Rivier University Fund and student scholarships. The goal of the campaign, named Riv Inspired this year, was twofold: to raise funds for student scholarships, and also to raise awareness of the powerful impact that the support of alumni and friends has on the University.

“Our Day of Giving provides the opportunity for us to talk about the importance of giving back to the University,” says Karen Cooper, Vice President for University Advancement. “Our goal was to provide consistent communications through a variety of channels to highlight the many ways that the support of alumni and friends impacts the University.”

The campaign’s messaging was aimed at inspiring individuals to make a difference and several hundred individuals did just that by making a donation on May 5. In addition to inspiring gifts to the Rivier University Fund and a variety of scholarship funds, the campaign inspired Louise Renaud Classon, Class of 1970, and her husband Kenneth to generously fund a new scholarship endowment to benefit nursing students.

Creative Riv Inspired posts on social media, electronic communications, grassroots efforts on campus, and a direct mail campaign promoted the one-day fundraising event. Gifts were made online, by phone, and in person throughout the Day of Giving, and messages of support were posted on the University’s social media pages.

“We are tremendously grateful for the generous support of all our donors on our Day of Giving and every day throughout the year,” says Cooper. “This support has a direct and lasting impact on our community and shows the powerful support of our University’s mission.”

Government Association Senators Ashley Mulvey and Nicole Henri thanked their fellow classmates for showing their Rivier pride by contributing to this year’s Class Gift campaign, which raised more than $3,000 from undergraduate, professional studies, and graduate students.

The Office of University Advancement and Alumni Relations continued a popular tradition started last year in which contributors to the Class Gift campaign received a gold recognition cord to wear at the Commencement ceremony, a symbol of their united support.

The latest news from around Rivier campus More than 200 Rivier students give back to the community in annual Day of Service

The Network for Vocation in Undergraduate Education (NetVUE) awarded Rivier a $49,000 grant to initiate and strengthen vocational discernment programs for undergraduate students. In this context, vocational discernment addresses the discovery of meaningful life’s work followed by thoughtful academic, cocurricular, service, and professional preparation.

“Vocational discernment is the cornerstone of Rivier’s core curriculum Journeys of Transformation,” says Sister Paula Marie Buley, IHM, Rivier’s President. “Through the discernment process, students are able to articulate their goals and craft pathways to fulfilling careers.”

Currently, all undergraduate students take part in one of two courses supporting discernment: Student Success: Campus to Community (day students) or Dignity, Work, Vocation (adult learners). Grant funds will enhance activities in these courses, as well as create a new experiential program to help students explore compatible career options.

“Programs developed with these grant funds will help students discover where their gifts and the world’s needs can meet, supporting their personal and professional success,” says Professor of English and Coordinator of General Education Dr. Bradford Stull, the grant’s author.

The new initiative, titled “Living a Life that Matters,” will immerse students in discernment work, community service, and engagement with community and business leaders. The program is scheduled for the week before students begin their first year at the University.

Active learning applications built into the process underscore Rivier’s commitment to incorporating real-world experiences into students’ academic and career preparation. The “Living a Life that Matters” experience will support the University’s new Employment Promise Program, an innovative initiative designed to enhance the employability of students in all academic disciplines.

Rivier’s fourth annual First-Year Student Day of Service contributed hundreds of service hours to Greater Nashua nonprofit organizations. Nearly 200 Rivier first-year students, 20 upper-class peer mentors, and supporting staff members participated in the April event.

“The Day of Service directly aligns with Rivier’s mission of transforming hearts and minds to serve the world,” says Dr. Bradford Stull, Professor of English and Coordinator of General Education. “The day’s events connected our students with the Nashua community in very positive and tangible ways.”

Students volunteered their time and talents at Anne-Marie House, the Boys and Girls Club of Nashua, Girls Inc. of Greater Nashua, Harbor Homes, the Hunt Community, PLUS Company, Nashua Parks and Recreation, Nashua Police Athletics League, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, the Salvation Army, and the YMCA. A University service project, Rivier’s Biology Club held its 12th annual Earth Day Charitable Road Race/Walk, with proceeds to benefit Beaver Brook Association in Hollis. In addition to sponsoring and marketing the event, students set up the 5K race route, welcomed and registered participants, and directed racers as they navigated the course through the streets of Nashua.

The Great American Downtown, led by Rivier alumnus Paul Shea ’07, organized Nashua Pride Downtown Park Cleanup Day to coincide with the First-Year Student Day of Service. Rivier students participated in the cleanup of parks and trails around the city’s center along with more than 150 volunteers from other community organizations.

“Many students tell me they get back much more than they give,” says Donny Guillemette, Rivier’s Service Learning Coordinator. “Students’ Day of Service experiences often motivate them to continue as volunteers with their host organizations.”

Career compatibility grant funds vocational discernment programs for first-year students

For the RECORD Reaching out to Rivier students through endowed scholarship gifts Providing financial assistance to deserving Rivier students is one of the most profound ways of transforming hearts and minds. Endowed scholarships, sustaining gifts that provide awards year after year, help make a Rivier education affordable for students and their families.

Through the generous support of alumni, faculty, staff, friends, and corporations, more than 70 endowed scholarships have been established.

“Creating a named scholarship endowment offers alumni another rewarding and meaningful way of contributing to the University’s mission,” says Karen Cooper, Vice President for University Advancement.

“Many of our loyal donors to the Rivier University Fund also choose to establish and fund endowed scholarships to provide additional support to our students in a personalized way.”

With a gift of $20,000, individuals or families can create a named scholarship endowment. Scholarships can be named in honor of a living person, as a personal or professional tribute, or in memory of a loved one.

Scholarships are awarded annually from income generated by the fund’s principal, which remains intact over the years.

“Through the generosity of our donors, the University is able to award more than $450,000 in endowed scholarships each year,” says Val Patenaude, Director of Financial Aid. “These funds are a critical source of support for students, many of whom are first-generation college students, who do not have the financial resources to independently afford a Rivier education.”

The following scholarships were recently endowed: Archambeault Hope Scholarship—Created by Patricia Archambeault in memory of her husband Gerard to benefit undergraduate students from New Hampshire majoring in nursing or a program in the health professions.

Louise (Renaud ’70) and Kenneth Classon Scholarship—Established in recognition of Louise’s appreciation of her Rivier education and to support undergraduate nursing students.

Davis Family Minority Merit Scholarship—Created by Delores Davis ’94G and her family to benefit minority undergraduate students who are majoring in math or science.

Alice LeBlanc Drew ’56 Scholarship—Established by Richard Drew to honor his wife Alice’s dedication to her alma mater and her desire to support undergraduate students majoring in business.

Dr. Wilfrid L. Fortin Memorial Scholarship— Created by Jeanne Fortin ’59 to recognize her husband's eminent career in the field of healthcare as a physician, service to his country, community, and family, and to benefit undergraduate nursing students.

President’s Circle Scholarships recognize and support future business leaders The President’s Circle supports Rivier’s educational mission by hosting business and community leaders on campus to discuss issues that impact the businesses and citizens of New Hampshire and Massachusetts and by providing financial assistance to the University’s most deserving and qualified students through named scholarships.

Leading businesses and organizations can participate in the President’s Circle Scholarship Program by making a $2,500 gift to Rivier University, which will be awarded in full during the academic year. Named in honor of the sponsoring company, the scholarship can be tailored to an industry by selecting a specific academic major as qualifying criteria.

Technical literacy Online learning expands educational access; learning is no longer limited by physical location. Rivier University Online was launched this past spring through a strategic initiative designed to diversify and amplify current academic program offerings in online learning and expand Rivier’s footprint throughout the region.

Online courses and online components of classroom courses promote information and technical literacy; webbased research, communication, and time management skills; as well as virtual teamwork and collaboration.

Experiential learning The University’s intentional focus on experiential learning in academic and career preparation develops both soft and hard skills. Active learning experiences more fully engage students in the learning process by driving them to

apply the knowledge they’ve gained to practical situations.

The Senior Business Seminar places undergraduate students in mock interview situations and includes a formal business etiquette dinner with instruction on proper table manners and conversation in a professional meeting environment. Nursing students spend countless hours in the University’s state-ofthe-art, hands-on simulation labs ‘treating’ lifelike patient simulators. Education majors begin logging observation hours in Greater Nashua schools during their first year of study.

experiences, along with the work we do to help them articulate their skill sets to potential employers, demonstrate a high level of motivation and leadership potential. It sets them apart in employers’ eyes and helps them to secure more desirable jobs after graduation.”

Internships and field experiences are strongly encouraged by all Rivier programs and required by several majors. Mandatory clinical courses place nursing students in New Hampshire and Massachusetts hospitals, including large metro-Boston hospitals like Mass General and Boston Children’s Hospital.

Education majors spend time in the on-campus early learning center, local school district classrooms, and are paired with mentor teachers in regional schools for a full semester of student teaching before graduation. Business and Criminal Justice students must complete at least one internship as part of their major course of study.

Additional hands-on experience is offered to students through an Alumni Mentor Program, sponsored jointly by the Office of University Advancement and Alumni Relations and the Career Development Center. This program partners students with successful alumni working in the fields students plan to enter. Alumni mentors and their mentees meet routinely to focus on career preparation.

Mentors provide a real-world perspective to students,

helping set expectations and providing guidance in their career planning process. A new Job Shadow Program that will enable students to spend time “shadowing” alumni in the workplace is scheduled to begin this fall.

Directed career preparation Rivier’s emphasis on directed career preparation, inclusive of career exploration and academic programming, is a unique differentiator.

Prior to the fall semester, undergraduate students will begin a discernment process aimed at determining a personally rewarding career path. Collaboration between the Office of Academic Affairs and Career Development Center helps students to thoughtfully consider, in many cases for the first time, what they value as professional pursuits and what they see themselves doing during a work day. As the process unfolds, academic and career programming is outlined for each student to help them achieve their defined goals.

Innovative Employment Promise Program enhances career success Confidence in Rivier’s students, faculty, and the education it provides prompted the University to institute an innovative Employment Promise Program for full-time, undergraduate students beginning in fall 2016. Through this initiative, the University promises invested students that they will secure a job within nine months of graduation. If they do not, they will receive additional support in the form of payment of monthly federal subsidized student loans for up to one year or enrollment in to up to six Rivier master’s degree courses tuition free.

The program includes mentorship through Rivier’s Career Development Center, a contract outlining investment goals and expectations, and specialized, four-year academic and career action plans which incorporate a set of experiences proven to enhance overall employability and success in the job search process.

Career investment goals include graduating with a bachelor’s degree and minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA, involvement in leadership, community service and internship experiences, and participation in career counseling and professional development opportunities.

Rivier is the only institution in New Hampshire to offer this program.

Shaping the future Recognizing the importance of a strong educational foundation, resourcefulness, and innovation at Commencement 2016

by Patricia Garrity Rivier University celebrated its 81st Commencement on May 7, awarding 898 degrees to doctoral, master’s, bachelor’s, and associate degree graduates—the largest graduating class in its history.

Highlighting the visual arts and the intersection of technology, business, and education, the University honored renowned international artist Sylvia Nicolas and innovative business leader and

entrepreneur Frederick H. Kocher, President of Kocher & Co., Inc. with honorary doctor of humane letters degrees.

Kocher delivered the Commencement address, remarking on how the workforce of the 21st century is very different from that of the prior century. He challenged graduates to continuously reinvent themselves to overcome obstacles and to take advantage of opportunities.

Rivier awards honorary Doctor of Humane Letters to Mr. Frederick H. Kocher In recognition of his vision, commitment, and leadership in ensuring New Hampshire’s enduring growth and success, Rivier presented Frederick H. Kocher an honorary degree at the 2016 Commencement. Mr. Kocher has made it his life’s work to exemplify the powerful impact of leadership and civic engagement in facilitating change and growth to benefit the common good.

Throughout his eminent career, Mr. Kocher has been an influential voice within New Hampshire’s business, technology, government, and higher education communities. He is the founder and president of Kocher & Company, a marketing and public relations firm specializing in high tech businesses. With more than 35 years of executive experience, Mr. Kocher has worked to advance the New Hampshire economy through his dedicated leadership as president of the New Hampshire High Technology Council.

A noted speaker and host of NH’s Business on WMUR-TV (ABC), he has received numerous awards and recognitions. He is the founder of Politics and Eggs and co-founder of NH Forum of the Future and the NH Coalition for Business & Education.

He has served on the boards of the NH High Technology Council, the NH Small Business Development Center, Granite State College, and Global Relief Technologies; as advisor to the NH Clean Tech Council; and president of AARP-NH.

Sculptress Sylvia Nicholas recognized with honorary Doctor of Humane Letters Honoring her artistry in creating a bronze sculpture of Rivier’s namesake and foundress of the Sisters of the Presentation of Mary, Blessed Anne Marie Rivier, the University presented Sylvia Nicolas an honorary degree at the 2016 Commencement ceremony.

Ms. Nicolas brought the founding spirit of Blessed Anne Marie Rivier to life through this sculpture, allowing us to know a visionary leader, apostle, and educator whose legacy forever moves us forward.

A renowned artist, Ms. Nicolas has received numerous commissions for her stained glass work including the Church of the Annunciation in Washington, DC and St. John’s University in New York, and for her sculptures at St. Anselm College, Stonehill College, Providence College, and most recently at Rivier University. She attended the Lycée Français and Dalton School in New York, the German Institute in Rome, Italy, and the Institut des Hautes Études Cinématographiques and the Académie de la Grande Chaumière, both in Paris, France.

Commencement 2016 Speaking on behalf of Rivier’s undergraduate programs, Luisa Forger, B.S. in Biology, Summa Cum Laude, of Merrimack, New Hampshire, addressed her fellow graduates about the importance of gratitude.

“According to recent statistics, only 7% of the world’s population had a college degree,” says Forger. “You are now privileged enough to be part of that growing 7%, and for that, you should be extremely grateful.” Forger also commended them for their years of hard work. “I know you are all going to do great things: as nurses, teachers, scientists, counselors, artists, entrepreneurs, parents, or maybe even students once again. No matter what your path, work hard to make this world a better place. Never stop learning, never stop growing, and never let others turn you into anything less than what you want to be. Educating Nurse Leaders New online Doctor of Nursing Practice program to prepare global healthcare leaders

Rivier is responding to the shortage of nurse leaders by launching an online Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree for fall 2016. The DNP is a clinically focused, terminal degree for advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) with the flexibility to customize academic and clinical programming to meet each clinician’s career aspirations. Graduates will be prepared for leadership roles on multidisciplinary healthcare teams working to improve systems of care, patient outcomes, and population health.

“The rapid rate of change in our nation’s healthcare system, worldwide quality of care and patient safety objectives, and the shortage of doctorally prepared

nursing faculty highlight the need for DNP-prepared nurse leaders,” says Sister Paula Marie Buley, IHM, Rivier’s President. “This new program enables nurses to work at their highest potential and to support advances in global healthcare.”

Rivier University has applied for candidacy status to obtain Accrediting Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) accreditation for the DNP. Currently, the University offers associate, bachelor’s, and master’s degrees in nursing, all of which are already accredited

by ACEN. The DNP curriculum aligns with the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) Essentials of Doctoral Education for Advanced Nursing Practice,

which defines curricular elements and competencies for this degree. Successful completion enables graduates to diagnose and care for patients with complex health issues, utilize informatics to enhance clinical decision making, and critically evaluate scholarly research.

Structured for student success, the curriculum design takes into account life’s demands on practicing APRNs. Classes are conducted online with a Saturday session held on campus once a semester.

Campus connections Campus Quad renewal aims to promote student engagement

by Michelle Marrone In the spirit of the Gateway Projects, the Campus Quad will undergo renovation this summer to increased its functionality and promote greater student engagement on campus.

The Gateway Projects, a series of campus enhancements, transformed the University’s landscape in visible and vibrants ways and inspired the Campus Quad renewal.

“Our goals for the Quad project are threefold,” says Sister Paula Marie Buley, IHM. “We want to increase utilization of

20

this central space, to encourage circulation and mobility across the campus, and to make the landscape aesthetics consistent with those established by the Gateway Projects.”

A large lower patio will be built at the bottom of the steps leading to the Dion Center. Redesigned steps and seating walls, planned to encircle the patio, will be constructed of granite, similar to those at Heritage Plaza. A new walkway and stairs will provide direct access from Guild Hall to the lower patio. Fresh plantings,

including flowering bushes and evergreens, will enhance the green space in the Quad and create a pleasing entrance to the Dion Center. The large grassy area that makes up the majority of the Quad will be maintained for students to enjoy outdoor space.

Work on the Campus Quad began just after Commencement, and the project will be completed by the end of August, prior to Move-in Day and students returning to campus for the fall semester.

his yearʼs Raider Athletics review begins by recognizing former studentathletes and coaches. In September, the Rivier Athletics Hall of Fame inducted five new members. Those recognized were Deborah Vander-Heyden Maloney (1985) Basketball and Field Hockey, Nicole Summers Walters (1994/2002G) Softball and Volleyball, Jeff Carpenter (2008) Basketball, Bobbie Bagley (1997/2014G) Soccer, and the 2006 Men’s Volleyball Team.

The Muldoon Health and Fitness Center got some new visual additions this fall that gave recognition to current and former

student-athletes. ʻAltiora et Meliora’— Higher and Better is the motto of Rivier University, and it has always been what Rivier student-athletes strive for and will continue to drive future generations of Raiders. Rivier provides student-athletes with opportunities and encourages them to work to reach their full potential through the development of leadership, character, and athletic excellence. The Hall of Excellence Wall was created as a space to recognize Rivier All-Americans and Great Northeast Athletic Conference award-winning students

and coaches. It represents the very best of Rivier University athletics. Through their performances, these student-athletes and coaches received the highest honors.

It was the end of an era in Riv Athletics for long-time men’s basketball and softball Head Coach Dave Morissette. He left Rivier after 18 years of service to pursue a new career. Two long-time assistant coaches stepped into head coach positions. Taking over in men’s basketball was Assistant Coach Lance Bisson. Mike Holloran, another longtime assistant coach, took over the reins as head softball coach.

Two Rivier volleyball setters were selected as the male and female Rivier-Athlete-ofthe-Year. As floor quarterbacks, both Emily O’Reilly (San Francisco, Calif.) and Tyler Blank (Rochester, N.Y.) led their teams to the finals of the GNAC Championship this year. Senior Emily O’Reilly was selected to her fourth consecutive All-Conference team and third straight appearance as a First Teamer. Association (NEWVA) Senior Classic game after she guided the Raiders to the 14th best team hitting percentage (.246) in the nation.

O’Reilly wrapped up her stellar career with 1,058 assists and the nation’s 37th best assist per set average (10.08). The fourth-year setter had a remarkable season for the Raiders that saw her eclipse the 4,000 career assist mark and become the University’s all-time leader in career assists (4,403).

Junior Tyler Blank was tabbed a GNAC First Team selection as he eclipsed the 3,000 career assist mark this past season. He became just the fourth member in Rivier history to reach 3K assists and finished the 2016 season with 1,120 assists in 99 sets played and an 11.31 assists per set average.

Blank directed the Raider offense to a .286 hitting percentage while adding in 19 kills of his own throughout the season. Blank was a three-time honoree for GNAC Offensive Player of the Week and was also named the AVCA/Impact Division III National Player of the Week. This was the third consecutive year that Blank has been selected as an AllConference recipient. He was a First Team member as well as the 2015 Rookie of the Year.

The world is our arena This year, more than 200 Raider student-athletes represented the Rivier University not only in New England, but up and down the East Coast.

The women’s volleyball team started the year off in the Virginia Wesleyan Tournament at Virginia Beach. The Raider women’s soccer team spent Labor Day Weekend competing in and touring New York City. Over spring break, three teams headed to sunny Florida to get a jump start on their seasons. The softball team traveled to Orlando and spent some time on the diamond and the Rock and Roll Roller Coaster at Disneyworld. The baseball team competed in Fort Meyers for the week and got the chance to catch a Red Sox spring training game in Jet Blue Park. The women’s lacrosse team also took their first trip to compete in Tampa, Florida. Riv Raiders are representing the University everywhere.

PROFESSOR, ADVISOR, ADMINISTRATOR, researcher, author, and activist—Dr. Elizabeth Harwood’s days and heart are full.

It was during graduate school that Dr. Harwood discovered her passion for teaching college students in the classroom and guiding them on their life journeys in the counseling setting. She traveled to New England to complete her pre-doctoral internship training and has lived here ever since, joining the Rivier community in 2009.

“I truly love and value my role as an

educator,” says Dr. Harwood. “Working with college students, in both my teaching and clinical careers, has been intellectually and emotionally fulfilling. Making a difference in a young adult’s life when they are forming their identities and life goals is such a rewarding experience.”

Society for Psychology. Dr. Harwood is an active researcher, and she is widely published in her areas of interest which include best practices in teaching, depression, relationship conflict and satisfaction, body dissatisfaction, and substance abuse.

Always aspiring to ‘higher and better,’ the University’s motto, Dr. Harwood’s current research focuses on scholarship, teaching, and learning. She is examining her own teaching techniques through evidence-based research with her students. Projects are

Professional and Community Organizations focused on the best practices for teaching writing in undergraduate writing courses and directed note-taking as a strategy for active engagement in the classroom.

“These research projects have made me more mindful of what and how I teach,” says Dr. Harwood. “Engaging students in these projects, I’ve found, helps them to process information on a deeper level and more readily apply learned knowledge to other situations, ultimately achieving greater academic performance.”

This research was inspired by Dr. Harwood’s clinical training, which she has applied to her teaching style. Empathy first— putting yourself in the studentsʼ “shoes” and envisioning what they need to know and do to be successful in the classroom. Next, applying unconditional positive regard to accept each student for who they are, where they are in their academic experience, and moving them forward from that point.

Finally, congruence in teaching style for a more authentic connection with students.

Rather than being a “sage on the stage,” she finds that being her authentic self—using humor and bringing her family into the conversation—makes her and the academic material more approachable.

Most recently, Dr. Harwood has lent her expertise to the dialogue on substance abuse in New Hampshire and throughout the country. She teaches two related courses at the University, Drugs and Behavior at the undergraduate level and Psychopharmacology at the graduate level.

After hearing her speak at a public forum on ‘The Science of Addiction,’ Nashua Mayor Jim Donchess invited Dr. Harwood to participate in an awareness and prevention panel workshop, “The Mayor’s Fall Summit: Our Community Working Towards Substance Abuse Solutions,” and to be a key member of the Greater Nashua Substance Misuse Prevention Leadership Team. As part of the Leadership Team, she helps coordinate efforts to raise awareness and guide substance abuse prevention efforts in the region.

“Since I’m not a treatment provider,” says Dr. Harwood, “spreading awareness in the community and participating on the Leadership Team are my ways of giving back—of contributing to the community as we work to resolve this crisis.”

A valued member of the Rivier University and local community, Dr. Harwood has been named recipient of the 2016 New Hampshire Excellence in Higher Education Award by the New Hampshire College and University Council (NHCUC). This award is given annually to one professor at the college or university level, recognizing her or his professional accomplishments and excellence in inspiring students to learn in the classroom.

“Fostering students’ excitement about the field of psychology is my primary goal as an educator,” says Dr. Harwood. “I firmly believe that if you set your expectations high and inspire students’ innate desire to learn, they will meet your challenges and emerge as lifelong learners.”

Looking back—Rivier transformed me to be the person I am today.

Tenacity, drive, and skill propel Blades through a successful career path DANA BLADES ’12 TOOK AN INDIRECT path to get to Rivier University. A native of a small town in New Hampshire, Blades originally majored in pharmaceutical sciences at an out-of-state university, then transferred to another college with a major in chemistry, before finding his place at Rivier in the biology program—the perfect fit for him. “The professors, advisors, and community were all so welcoming. I knew almost immediately that I would thoroughly enjoy my time at the University,” says Blades.

The faculty at Rivier taught him how to embrace learning about the sciences—from cell biology to immunology, how to read and understand published articles, and by using experimental theory, how to write and execute a grant proposal for his senior research project.

“With this year-long project, I learned the true meaning of being dedicated to a sole project and seeing it through to the end,” says Blades. This project involved writing

a grant proposal to examine the water quality of two different rivers located in the northeastern United States, conducting experiments to extract finite amounts of estrogen out of collected river water samples, and reporting the results.

Blades believes that his Rivier education prepared him well for the job market and describes his senior project experience as critical in obtaining his first, entry-level position in the pharmaceutical industry.

Prior to graduation, he was hired for his first professional position by Lonza Biologics, a global leader in life sciences and a worldwide supplier of biopharmaceuticals, as part of their quality control (QC) team.

He also gained valuable life skills beyond the sciences. “I learned that an excellent work ethic would be crucial to my future success. It taught me how to examine data— something I do every day—critical thinking, and experimental design.”

Blades’ responsibilities at Lonza included technology transfer work between research

facilities. He was selected to travel to Singapore for two weeks to transfer a QC method from the Singapore division to the Portsmouth division. The project encompassed training in Singapore, setting up a new lab within the facility, and countless hours training staff. When Lonza Portsmouth manufactured the drug product using this QC test protocol, the testing was flawless. He was subsequently promoted to a Quality Control Analyst position, taking the lead in global cleaning studies and serving as subject-matter expert for polymerase chain reactions in Lonza’s Electrophoresis Group.

His postion at Lonza prepared him for his next professional challenge. He has recently accepted the position of Associate Scientist II at Bluebird Bio Inc., headquartered in Cambridge, Massachusetts—a growing biotechnology company committed to developing potentially transformative gene therapies for severe genetic diseases and T cell-based immunotherapies.

When Blades meets a challenge, he pushes through it with resilience, staying motivated and positive. He shares this motivation with the employees that he mentors. “Motivating them to stay focused and achieve their own goals is something I find rewarding,” says Blades.

Blades has expanded his mentor role to include two undergraduate students in Rivier’s Alumni Mentor Program.

Launched in spring 2015, the program prepares students for the transition from college to career and offers alumni opportunities for meaningful engagement

with their alma mater. Both of Blades’ mentees are extremely motivated. He had thought that he would work with them on research, experiment protocols, and technical writing, but they were already adept in these areas. Instead, he has assisted them with job searches, resume building, and interviewing skills.

“I take pride in helping them succeed and will do my best to ensure the success of any Rivier future graduate that reaches out to me,” says Blades. “These students are given all of the tools necessary for their success.

I am happy to guide them through the

challenging time of looking for jobs or internships and to let them know what to expect while looking for that coveted position.”

Rivier’s mission has had a significant impact on Blades. “Looking back—Rivier transformed me to be the person I am today.

Assistant Professor of Art and Director of the Art Gallery at Rivier University Sister Theresa Couture, pm, received the Meri Goyette Arts Award in April for her “deep and longstanding commitment to promoting and supporting the local arts scene.” Mayor Jim Donchess presented the award at a luncheon sponsored

by City Arts Nashua and the Nashua Arts Commission.

Associate Professor and Director of the Criminal Justice Program Eric Gentes, Esq., left, presented “Moving Toward Incorporating Relative Crime Severity into the Supreme Court’s Fourth Amendment Jurisprudence” at the Annual Meeting of the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences. His paper on the subject will be published in the Criminal Law Bulletin later this year.

Assistant Professor of Psychology and Director of the Clinical Psychology Program Dr. Karen Meteyer co-presented “Using immigrant interviews to increase critical cultural awareness” at the March 2016 Conference on Language, Learning, and Culture: Reimagining International Education. Head Coach Craig Kolek was voted GNAC Men’s Volleyball Coach of the Year by his peers after guiding the Raiders to a 22-11 overall mark and an appearance in the conference title match.

This marks the fourth GNAC Coach of the Year honor for Kolek, who has also received the GNAC Women’s Volleyball Coach of the Year honor three times.

Nursing Instructor Janice Lindquist, MS, RN attended a NCLEX seminar for Nurse Educators in Chicago. She attended presentations on changes to the NCLEX board exam, which will be shared with the nursing faculty to update student board exam preparation.

Professor of Mathematics Dr. Teresa Magnus delivered the presentation “Introducing IBL to Future Elementary Teachers and Others in a Geometrical Explorations Course” at the January 2016 Joint Mathematics Meeting. The paper was accepted as part of the Mathematical Association of America contributed paper session on inquiry-based teaching and learning.

Professor of History and Political Science Dr. Martin Menke presented a paper titled “The Center Party Between Stability and Crisis in Weimar Germany” at the 2016 American Historical Association/American Catholic Historical Association (ACHA) annual meeting. He also chaired a panel discussion on the Pulitzer Prize-winning “Mussolini and Pius XI: A Secret History” and was re-appointed as program committee chair for the ACHA.

Briana Baileyʼs Rivier education has allowed her to get involved locally and to explore other cultures.

Why did you choose Rivier University?

Rivier was my first choice. I went to a large high school; my graduating class had nearly 900 students, so it was a pretty impersonal experience. I really value Riv’s small, close-knit community and the one-on-one time I have with faculty. Plus, I wanted the college experience, but also wanted to stay connected to my friends and family.

What do you value most about the Elementary Education program?

What I value most is that I’ve had wonderful field experience opportunities. I feel very confident working with students and teachers, thanks to many educational hours spent in numerous schools in southern New Hampshire.

Have you participated in experiential learning or community service projects?

As an education major, I began my field experiences in my freshman year with observation hours in local schools. In my sophomore year, I participated in a service learning experience at Girls’ Inc. in Nashua and ended up becoming a “Big” for a year, which helped me appreciate that teachers are needed not only as educators, but also as mentors. Building a supportive relationship with students can help them thrive socially, emotionally, and in the classroom.

What has been one of your best Rivier experiences thus far?

I went to Costa Rica with the Biology Club where we installed a biodigester with some students from Japan. The Club raised money for this project and traveled as a group to the island. I learned so many new things about these other cultures, and we made a positive impact on the environment and the lives of the family that owned the farm.

If you could do or be anything in life, what would it be?

The thing I want to be most in life is a teacher. My goal is to advocate for the rights of students with disabilities in Latin American countries.

Is Rivier preparing you well for the job market, and what are your plans after graduation?

I think the best way to prepare for something is to immerse yourself in it. I love the fact that Riv allows their students to learn through experiences. The skills I’ve gained by observing, writing, and teaching lessons are extremely valuable to me as a future educator. I’m a TEACH Grant recipient, which means I’ll teach at an inner-city school for a minimum of three years after graduation. I’ve always wanted to work with inner-city students and gear my teaching style to benefit their growth.

Favorite Book: The Outlander series

What would you tell someone who didnʼt know anything about Rivier?

I would tell them itʼs a very welcoming place. As a university, Riv has something for everyone.

There are always events and activities going on, numerous clubs and groups, and trips to keep you busy and involved. There are also classes to fit any interest, which I know have helped me expand my thinking and value my education.
