From the President Dear Friends of Rivier, I am pleased to share with you new and ongoing initiatives designed to amplify the reach of Rivier University at home and abroad.

Rivier University Online, a strategic initiative to increase academic program offerings at the undergraduate and graduate levels, has launched this spring.

The expansion of online degree offerings will extend our reach, making a Rivier education accessible to a greater number of students.

Beijing City University students and faculty will join Rivier University students and faculty for an intensive applied biotechnology course this summer. The first week will be held on our campus in July and then all will travel to Beijing to complete their coursework.

The Congregation of the Sisters of the Presentation of Mary will hold their International Conference of Education: A Mission of Hope on the Rivier campus this August.

This issue of Rivier Today highlights the significant impact of the Gateway Projects on the transformation of the campus.

Designed to create community and enhance the student and visitor experience, the projects focus on a formal entrance, and the linkage of Rivier’s natural, sacred, and historical landmarks of Resurrection Chapel, the newly enhanced Sharon McOsker Tamposi Alumni Legacy Garden, and Madeleine Hall. In August, the Rivier community will join together at the dedication of the Heritage Plaza and the blessing of a sculpture of Blessed Anne Marie Rivier.

Student and alumni engagement continue as important University goals, and I invite you to participate in our new Alumni Mentor Program.

This is an opportunity for alumni to reach out and share

their wisdom with current Rivier undergraduate students through career coaching. This initiative, sponsored by the Alumni Council, has been well received by students and alumni alike.

During our 80th Commencement this spring, we welcomed 799 new graduates into the Rivier University Alumni Association. This fall, we invite all Rivier graduates back to campus for our Alumni Reunion Weekend where they can remember, relive, and reunite with fellow alumni, celebrate their anniversary, and learn about the University’s new and exciting initiatives. The Kreick Family Scholars Program will support adult learners through: Scholarships—The Kreick Family Scholarship will provide tuition aid for returning adults to pursue their bachelor’s degrees.

The Kreick Family, longtime Nashua residents and Rivier benefactors, have established the Kreick Family Scholars Program to assist adult learners who wish to complete their bachelor’s degrees at Rivier University.

The program was inspired

by Carol Kreick, who attended Rivier as a young mother to complete her bachelor’s degree in 1979 and a master’s in psychology in 1984.

Dr. John Kreick, former president of Sanders Associates (now BAE), served on the University’s Board of Trustees from 1992 to 2010. He is

credited with instituting policies that established a foundation for the institution’s financial vitality, which remains in place today. Bradley Kreick followed his father’s leadership and joined the Board of Trustees in 2010, providing wise counsel in finance and investment policy.

This program addresses a critical need in New Hampshire, where it is estimated that more than 19% or 140,000 residents have earned some college credit, but not completed a degree.

New Vice President for Academic Affairs joins the Rivier Administration

Dianne Mercier of Manchester, President of People’s United Bank for New Hampshire, was recently elected Chair of Rivier's Board of Trustees.

She has served as a member of the Board since 2010 and also serves on the Finance and Investment, and Enrollment committees.

“We are pleased to welcome Dianne’s exceptional vision, practical advice and business acumen as the University moves ahead with its strategic initiatives,ˮ said Sister Paula Marie Buley, IHM, President.

Mercier has vast experience in the banking industry with a career that has spanned 30 years in a variety of leadership positions in both regional and commercial banking. She has served in her current position of President of People’s United Bank for New Hampshire, where she directly oversees commercial banking and executes division banking strategy, since 2009. Prior to this, Mercier served as senior vice president and group manager for commercial lending at Ocean Bank. She has held several positions at Citizens Bank, including state director of community banking, commercial lender and credit department manager. Prior to Citizens, she was operations manager for First NH Bank.

Committed to civic and charitable organizations, Mercier also serves on the boards for The New England Council, Elliot Health System, Manchester Chamber of Commerce, NH Center for Public Policy Studies, and RiverWoods at Exeter.

Mercier was recognized as the 2014 Business Leader of the Year by Business NH Magazine—honored for her effectiveness on numerous, key nonprofit boards and at the fourth largest bank in the state. She received the Outstanding Women in Business Award from NH Business Review, and was a member of the 2009 class of Leadership New Hampshire and 2000 class of Leadership Manchester. She holds a bachelor’s degree in marketing from Southern New Hampshire University.

With 25 years of experience in higher education administration, Douglas W. Howard, Ph.D. has been appointed Vice President for Academic Affairs. He leads all academic programming in the four divisions of the University, as well as oversees academic services.

He served Rivier as Interim Dean of Arts and Sciences from August to October 2014 and as Interim Vice President for Academic Affairs from October to December 2014.

“Dr. Howard has demonstrated a collaborative spirit and a keen sense of the issues facing private higher education,” says Sister Paula Marie Buley, IHM, President. “He is an experienced academic administrator, and I am delighted to have him join the Rivier University community.”

Dr. Howard previously held key administrative roles at St. John Fisher College and most recently served as Vice President for Academic Affairs at Medaille College. His broad experience extends to the areas of accreditation, academic program development, faculty development with a focus on learnercentered pedagogies, and academic partnerships.

“I am impressed by Rivier University's commitment to meeting the needs of diverse learners—from traditional undergraduates to adult, online, and international students. Serving the needs of multiple constituencies not only extends the University’s educational reach, it also positions Rivier for continued success in the crowded marketplace of private higher education,” says Dr. Howard.

In addition to having served as an outside evaluator for the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and as a periodic review evaluator for the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, he has authored several articles, contributed chapters and essays to collections, and served as the editor for several publications.

A Shakespearean scholar, Dr. Howard has published on 17th- and 18th-century English drama and has presented widely on topics ranging from learning communities to 20thcentury American art. He holds a Ph.D. and M.A. in English from the University of Rochester, as well as a B.A. in English from Miami University.

5.5.15 Rivier celebrates an historic Day of Giving in May On May 5, Rivier alumni, faculty, staff, Sisters, and friends across the country joined together in support of the University’s students and its mission. The first-ever Day of Giving offered an invitation to the University’s diverse constituents to stand united in their support by making a gift to the Rivier University Fund. With the generous support of all constituents, the one-day fundraising event raised $45,000 from more than 320 individuals.

In addition to increasing dollars raised to provide scholarship support for students, the Day of Giving also raised awareness of the importance of giving back to the University. “Through creative posts on social media, electronic communications, and direct mail campaigns, the University has increased awareness of the impact of alumni support and the importance of our participation rate,” says Karen Cooper, Vice President for University Advancement. “We were proud to see the united support of so many of our constituents on one day, all showing their collective pride in Rivier.”

First-Year Student Day of Service promotes awareness, goodwill, and community Rivier first-year students, upper-class peer mentors, and staff participated in the third annual First-Year Student Day of Service.

The event provided nearly 500 hours of service—the equivalent of three months of full-time work—to Greater Nashua non-profit organizations.

Rivier students performed spring cleaning tasks, engaged in client activities, and completed several garden and landscape projects at Anne Marie House, Boys and Girls Club, Girls Inc., Harbor Homes, The Hunt Community, Nashua Parks and Recreation, Nashua Police Athletics League, The PLUS Company, Salvation Army, and the YMCA. The Biology Club hosted its 11th annual 5K charitable walk/road race on this day to benefit the Beaver Brook Association in Hollis. The race drew fifty runners and raised a total of $825.

A group of students and peer mentors spent three hours at Mine Falls Park, raking leaves and picking up trash and debris.

“As a peer mentor, I was glad to see how the freshmen seemed to enjoy helping, some of them going to great lengths to get their task done,” said Sarah Levesque ’17. Being able to make a difference by doing this work was very gratifying to Levesque and did not go unnoticed by the community. “Many people who were enjoying Mine Falls stopped and thanked us for helping to beautify the park.”

The Day of Service is a component of the University’s Student Success: Campus to Community program. This year-long course helps first-year students strengthen their academic skills and promotes cultural awareness, commitment to service, and vocational discernment. The event demonstrates the University’s commitment to service and puts into practice Rivier’s mission to ‘transform hearts and minds to serve the world.’

This year’s Day of Service activities received grant support from the Million Dollar Round Table Foundation. The Foundation is the philanthropic arm of the Million Dollar Round Table, the Premier Association of Financial Professionals®.

Carly Fiorina, former CEO and Chairman of Hewlett-Packard and candidate for U.S. President, spoke to a group of business and community leaders at the University’s President’s Circle Leadership Forum in May. The first woman to lead a Fortune 500 business when she served as CEO and Chairman of HewlettPackard, Fiorina advanced the company from the 28th to the 11th most profitable company in the United States. In her six years leading the organization, she doubled its revenues to $90 billion, more than quadrupled both growth and cash flow, tripled the rate of innovation, and achieved market leadership in every market and product category.

Fiorina currently serves as Chairman of the American Carly Fiorina, former CEO and Chairman of Hewlett-Packard Conservative Union Foundation, and candidate for U.S. President educating and elevating public discourse on conservative principles; Good360, the world’s largest product philanthropy organization; and Opportunity International, the largest, nonprofit micro-finance lender in the world.

Comprised of distinguished business and community leaders, the Rivier University President’s Circle opens dialogue and promotes the exchange of ideas on topics impacting the businesses of New Hampshire and Massachusetts.

The President’s Circle has hosted a variety of business leaders as well as politicians including former Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives Newt Gingrich, U.S. Ambassador to China Jon Huntsman, former U.S. Senator Rick Santorum, and others.

Nursing conference supports N.H. workforce diversity Recognizing the increasingly diverse population of the state of New Hampshire, the University remains committed to educating an equally diverse workforce.

An outcome of Rivier’s grant from the Health Resources and Services Administration—one of approximately 15 grants awarded nationally—the University hosted a nursing workforce diversity conference in April.

The event featured Marianne R. Jeffreys, Ed.D., RN, Professor of Nursing at CUNY-Staten Island, whose Nursing Universal Retention and Success model has been nationally recognized.

The Jeffreys model highlights the broad range of academic and environmental factors which lead to integration within the nursing profession. The model focuses on creating an environment in which nursing students persist in their studies, graduate, and successfully pass the RN nursing exam with the goal of entering the workforce.

Faculty from Rivier’s Division of Nursing and Health Professions attended the conference along with faculty of regional programs and representatives from the New Hampshire Board of Nursing.

Participants utilized case studies to further apply retention and persistence statistics in support of academic success.

Graduates of the Class of 2015 recognized for outstanding service and welcomed into the Alumni Association

Acknowledging the generosity of the graduating class

In celebration and acknowledgement of the many accomplishments of the Class of 2015, the University hosted the annual Senior Student Send-off Brunch, presenting awards to several outstanding students and formally welcoming the Class into the Alumni Association.

Sister Paula Marie Buley, IHM, President congratulated students and encouraged them to reflect on their achievements and transformation over the last four years, and to commit to a life of service.

Several members of the Class of 2015 were recognized for their exceptional leadership and outstanding service.

Each year at the Senior Student Send-off, members of the graduating class present the Class Gift to the University. A long-standing tradition at Rivier, and at colleges and universities across the country, the program recognizes the generosity of graduating students as they give back to the University in support of current and future students.

Senior Class Challenge Leader Elizabeth Groves proudly shared that the Class of 2015 raised close to $3,000 for the Rivier University Fund. Comprised of the Senior Class Challenge, as well as a Class Gift program for the University's Professional Studies and Graduate students, the program provides an opportunity for graduating students to make their first gift to Rivier in honor of their graduation year and to directly support students through financial aid and scholarships.

In recognition of their support of the Class Gift program, participants received gold recognition cords to wear at the Commencement ceremony. “We were very proud that so many of our classmates were wearing their cords, which symbolize our united support of Rivier,” said Groves.

The Dr. Jamison Gilder Hoff Leadership Award, established in 2013, was presented to Mackenna Murtagh ʼ15.

Murtagh is the second recipient of this award, which is presented annually to a Rivier graduating student who, like Dr. Hoff, the former Chair of the Board of Trustees, leaves Rivier with a legacy of leadership and service.

During his undergraduate career, Murtagh served as a Student Government Association officer and senator, as a peer mentor; and as a three-year orientation leader. He was a member of several Student Affairs committees and was instrumental in starting the

Rivier Emergency Response Club to bring student EMT services to campus.

Elizabeth Groves received the Rivier University Spirit Award, which acknowledges students for their commitment and contributions to campus life. Those who receive this ‘unsung hero’ award have clearly demonstrated loyalty to Rivier and dedication to enhancing the University experience.

Tia Strong, Jennifer Bowers, and Yifan Meng were given special recognition, receiving the Distinguished Service Award for their outstanding contributions of volunteerism and leadership, support, and commitment to the University’s mission.

When the University unveiled the Gateway Projects in 2013, Sister Paula Marie Buley, IHM, President stated, “We only have one opportunity to make a first impression. Our campus environment needs to reflect the quality of our academic programs and resources in order for the University to compare and compete in the higher education marketplace.”

Less than two years later, Rivier University stands poised to make a powerful first impression for prospective students and their families, business and community leaders, and a host of other guests visiting campus each day. That impression is not just surface deep—it is not made solely by the impressive granite gateways that mark the campus entrances or the sprawling green spaces lining South Main Street that were once merely parking lots.

The impression is much deeper than landscaping and construction, and is found in the presence of the University’s history and Catholic heritage infused throughout the Gateway Projects. The new exterior of Madeleine Hall provides a welcoming entrance for prospective students and their families.

For prospective students and their families who experience the University’s history and heritage when they enter the campus, this experience is reinforced upon their arrival to Madeleine Hall, which serves as the University’s Admissions Welcome Center. Formerly named Foundress Hall and serving as the original campus building when the institution relocated from Hudson to Nashua in 1941, the building

now proudly bears the name of Rivier’s foundress, Sister Madeleine of Jesus, pm. It is fitting that Madeleine Hall serves as the first point of contact for students beginning their journey at Rivier, named for an inspirational and devoted leader who believed in reaching higher and better following the University’s motto of “altiora et meliora.” The renovated exterior includes a welcoming visitor entrance, a campus map

to orient prospective students and their families to the Rivier campus, as well as walkways connecting the building to the Resurrection Chapel, the new Chapel Plaza and Quad, as well as the Heritage Plaza.

Madeleine Hall is also home to the recently renovated and dedicated Perreault Room, named in honor of Sister Jeanne Perreault’s 50 years of devoted service to Rivier as a Sister of the Presentation of Mary and former Rivier College President from 1980-1997. The Perreault Room was transformed through the generous support of Linda Lemery Robinson, Classes of 1969, 1979G, and 1994H. The renovated space will provide the location for a variety of gatherings, reflecting the

University’s commitment to community engagement.

With enhancements spanning South Main Street, the Gateway Projects have lived up to their name—serving as gateways to faith and engagement and ensuring that the University takes advantage of its one opportunity to make a first impression. Creating a distinct campus experience that reflects Rivier’s Catholic heritage and history, the projects are raising the profile of the University throughout the city and beyond and ensuring that the legacy created by the Sisters of the Presentation of Mary is proudly represented—not through bricks and landscaping—but through history and tradition.

Recognizing the impact of leadership, perseverance, and extraordinary achievement at the 80th Commencement ceremony

by Patricia Garrity Rivier University honored Commencement speaker Karen A. Daley, Ph.D., RN, FAAN with an honorary doctorate of humane letters in recognition of her eminent career as a nurse, public health advocate, and educator at its 80th Commencement at the Tsongas Center in Lowell, Massachusetts.

The University awarded 799 degrees to doctoral, master’s, bachelor’s, and associate degree graduates at the May 9 ceremony.

Serving as a front-line caregiver and senior staff nurse for 25 years and advancing to leadership roles, including President of the American Nurses Association in which she represented the interest of the nation’s 3.1 million registered nurses, Dr. Daley has had a far-reaching impact on the nursing

profession and the field of healthcare.

After a workplace accident in which she was co-infected with HIV and Hepatitis C by a needlestick injury, Dr. Daley’s career transitioned from practice to prevention. She is a vocal, nationally recognized advocate for legislation mandating the use of safer needle devices in healthcare practice settings.

“Dr. Daley’s life’s work and message have inspired our University community,” says Sister Paula Marie Buley, IHM, President.

“Her resilience, passion, and commitment to others remind us that transforming the world is a privilege and that education is a pathway to service.”

Addressing graduates on the importance of self-awareness, courage, and finding

meaning and purpose in their lives, Dr. Daley shared, “When life takes an unexpected turn, like it did in mine, when life seems incredibly unfair and beyond control, understand that that is the nature of life. It is how you deal with those difficult times that matters most and reveals the most about who you are as a person,” says Dr. Daley. “Become your own hero. Live your life with a sense of authenticity, passion, courage, and purpose. Those will be the things that define you in your life.”

Dr. Daley serves as a living example of Rivier’s mission; a mission that has been sharpened by significant initiatives in nursing, public health, and global engagement. A leader in the education of

nursing and healthcare professionals, Rivier offers degrees from the associate to the doctoral level. The University has prepared the largest number of nurses in the state of New Hampshire and recently launched bachelor’s and master’s degrees in public health.

The launch of Rivier University Online Strategic initiative drives growth in online learning

ivier University Online launched this spring through a strategic initiative designed to diversify and amplify current academic program offerings in online learning. The University has elevated the presence of its programs in business, nursing, public health, and psychology to more widely recruit students who will benefit from the Rivier advantage offered in an online format.

“As we continue to develop our programs of academic distinction and seek to diversify our enrollment, we recognize that our adult learner population is a critical audience and that the flexibility of online learning is a significant advantage for working professionals,” says Sister Paula Marie Buley, IHM, President.

Rivier University Online will offer degree programs for professional studies and graduate students. “Maximizing the use of web-based technologies, Rivier's dynamic and distinguished faculty offer real-world experience and deliver high-quality academic programs,ˮ added Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Douglas Howard.

Alumni mentor program enhances alumni engagement and student success

Paraglegal Studies) and her student mentee Tia Strong ʼ15 (B.A. in Sociology). Believers in the power of mentoring, Johnson, an attorney and director with the McLane Law Firm, has

had several mentors throughout her academic and professional career, and Strong was a peer mentor herself.

Designed to prepare students for the transition from college to career and to provide meaningful engagement for alumni with their alma mater, the Alumni Mentor

Program was launched this past January with an orientation session for alumni and students. “The program has been very well received by our alumni,” says Mary Bollinger, Director of Alumni Relations and Special Events. “They are grateful for the opportunity to help Rivier’s next generation

of students prepare to make their mark on the world.”

Sponsored by the Alumni Council in partnership with the Office of University Advancement and Alumni Relations and the Career Development Center, the program builds substantial connections between the alumni mentors and their student mentees.

“A common theme among the partnerships is a focus on success in academics, current internships, and an exploration of graduate education,” says Marie Sullivan, Director of the Career Development Center.

A global traveler and advocate, Strong’s first experience abroad was so successful that upon her return, she worked for the University’s Office of Global Engagement.

Strong entered the Alumni Mentor Program as a senior with a plan already in place to live and work overseas upon graduation. “Linda has been an incredible help to me as I’ve planned my life after graduation,” she says.

“She has helped me to clarify my goals and suggested ways in which I might meet them.”

As the result of a conversation with Johnson and her daughter, who teaches abroad, Strong considers teaching English in China as a viable career option. “They helped me see exciting options for my future and the paths to pursue them,” says Strong.

Johnson’s enthusiasm for her student mentee and the mentor experience is apparent. “Tia is a remarkable, talented, compassionate, and energetic young lady.

We have spent time discussing her career options and setting short- and longer-term job goals. We’ll soon be talking about how to manage the payback of college loans,” says Johnson. “I believe in the value of a mentormentee relationship, and have been fortunate to have had mentors in my life. It gives me great pleasure to help Tia in the same way that others have helped me.”

Drawing from their professional experiences, mentors are providing student mentees with networking opportunities in

their fields of interest, assistance with resume development, and support in crafting their ‘elevator pitch’ for interviews based on what employers are looking for in job candidates.

“Most recently the University hosted a Speed Networking event where students were given the opportunity to utilize their elevator pitch in meeting with other alumni mentors,” says Sullivan. “The room came alive as students had only three minutes to impress each mentor. The mentors were quite amazed with the students’ maturity and focus, and the students walked away feeling more confident and connected.”

Connections formed between mentors and mentees add depth to the experience, making participation personally and professionally rewarding. Energetic and enthusiastic Holly DeCarteret ʼ13, RN (B.S. Nursing), a maternity ward nurse at the Elliot Hospital in Manchester, was matched with three student mentees— Brooke Anderson ʼ17, Alyssa Cummings ʼ16, and Nicole Henri ʼ16—all pursing their bachelor’s degree in nursing. A recent graduate, DeCarteret is pleased to be reconnected to Rivier. “Honestly, I was having ‘Riv withdrawals,’ ” she shares. “I was part of the Peer Mentor Program while I completed my undergraduate education.

I loved sharing my experiences as a peer mentor, and thought that I could continue to do that with Rivier students.”

DeCarteret’s student mentees appreciate her willingness to help them with their current academic challenges, as well as preparation for entering the workforce.

“It has turned out to be an awesome experience,” says Nicole Henri ʼ16. “Holly recently graduated from Riv and is working as a nurse. She has helped me study for exams, draft my resume, and provided guidance on building my nursing capstone binder. I am so grateful that I have someone to go to for help and advice, someone who understands what I am going through.”

Anderson, Cummings, and Henri will each spend a day “shadowing” DeCarteret in the maternity ward at Elliot Hospital.

With her sponsorship, these student mentees will receive an insider’s view to hospital nursing care. Real-world experiences like this provide valuable exposure to job opportunities and help guide students’ career choices.

“I have loved being a part of the program and have benefited just as much if not more than the students,” says DeCarteret. “Helping future nurses and giving my time to benefit these students is a joy for me.”

Jake Nelson̓s Rivier education extends beyond his business classes.

He credits his mentors, teammates, and community service experiences with providing valuable life lessons for his continued success.

I would love to be a college or university basketball coach.

Why did you choose Rivier University?

I knew Rivier had a strong business program. I had attended Rivier basketball camps and games since I was 10 years old and had a great relationship with head Coach Dave Morissette, so I knew I’d be happy in the Rivier community.

What did you hope to gain from your Rivier experience?

I came in with a bigger goal than achieving a degree. I wanted an education that would prepare me for my career.

Who have been your Rivier mentors and how have they helped you?

Business professors Dr. Wayne, Dr. Toosi, and Dr. Kivenzor have helped me to not only succeed in their classes, but also to prepare for job success after graduation. Basketball coaches, Dave Morissette and Chris Giordano pushed me to achieve goals I did not think I could reach. Coach Giordano’s motto “hard work and dedication” continues to be a motivator for me.

How has being a basketball team member impacted your college career?

I loved being part of the basketball team because I contributed to something bigger than any individual could achieve alone. I learned to show good character through wins and losses and that no matter what obstacle is placed in your path, you have to attack it. My coaches and team members helped me come back from two ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) injuries. I became a better player and a stronger person as a result.

Rivier’s mission, ‘transforming hearts and minds to serve the world,’ invites students to be the best they can be. Has this been your experience?

Absolutely. One semester I volunteered at The PLUS Company, which serves young adults with disabilities. It was a very humbling and amazing experience because while I was supposed to be teaching sports and teamwork to the group, I was actually learning lessons from them.

Phil, who was in a wheelchair, loved basketball. We practiced every day; he took shots on the net, and I rebounded for him. He never made a basket until the last week when he finally sunk one. His smile was priceless.

Knowing I helped put that smile on his face—well, I’ve never had a more rewarding experience. Phil’s perseverance taught me to never settle—to be the best I can be in every aspect of my life. I can’t thank The PLUS Company and Rivier University enough for the opportunity to learn such valuable lessons. The University is always trying to better the lives of people in need, and I am proud to be a Riv student because of this.

The 2015 GNAC Women’s Volleyball Champions

T

his year, Rivier University intercollegiate teams filled more than 200 roster spots and many student-athletes’ exceptional performances were recognized not only on campus, but in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC).

In the fall, the women’s volleyball team won their sixth GNAC Championship defeating Johnson & Wales 3-1. The Raiders placed five players on the GNAC All-Conference teams; sophomores Dana Mott (Medway, Mass.) and Molly McCormack (Ballston Lake, N.Y.), and junior Emily O’Reilly (San

Francisco, Calif.), and freshman Bethany Trevino (Westminster, Colo.) were all named to the first team and sophomore Lauren Silverman (Chelmsford, Mass.) to the second team. Emily O’Reilly was selected the GNAC Tournament Most Outstanding Player and Bethany Trevino the GNAC Defensive Player of the Year.

Field hockey became an official GNAC sport this year and the Raiders, under new head coach Ellen Maruszewski, qualified for the GNAC Tournament for the first time in Rivier’s history. Seniors Veronica Jones

In Raider men’s soccer, senior Danny Connelly (Bedford, N.H.) and sophomore Gary Archambault (Auburn, N.H.) were selected to the GNAC All-Conference Third Team. From the Raider women’s team, sophomore Maggie Cohoon (Derry, N.H.) earned a spot on the GNAC AllConference Third Team. The women’s team was also selected for the GNAC Institutional Sportsmanship Award.

Senior pitcher Alex Mears (Sandown, N.H.) and junior outfielder Jeremy Ball (Swanzey, N.H.) were selected to the GNAC AllConference Third Team. Senior third baseman Mike Scanlon (Plantsville, Conn.) earned a spot on the first GNAC Gold Glove Team.

The Raider baseball team won their first spring game in Florida on the way to their best season since 2008. The team qualified as the fifth seed in the GNAC Tournament and lost a 1-0 heartbreaker to Lasell College in the GNAC Tournament. Five Raiders earned All-Conference Honors for the season. Senior second-baseman JJ Montello (Nashua, N.H.) and junior shortstop Taylor Black (West Springfield, Mass.) were on the GNAC All-Conference First Team. Senior outfielder David Cusack

The Rivier softball team traveled to South Carolina for spring break then returned to find three feet of snow on Raider Field.

The young team played on the turf for a good portion of the season and placed three students on the GNAC All-Conference Teams.

Junior outfielder Lia Bobek (Hollis, N.H.) was elected to the First Team, sophomore shortstop Shaylyn Freitas (Pelham, N.H.) and freshman utility player and leadoff hitter Tori Dugan (Norwalk, Conn.) were elected to the Third Team.

In the spring season, the Raider teams faced weather challenges with games played in snow, sleet, and cold rain.

Despite the shivering on the sidelines and the rescheduled games, the Raiders had a lot of success. The men’s lacrosse team

Deanna Purcell (Hudson, N.H.), above, made a better kind of Rivier history on the hardwood. The senior from Hudson, New Hampshire scored more than 2,000 points to become the all-time leading scorer in Rivier basketball for both women and men.

Purcell was selected the GNAC Player of the Year and the Rivier Athlete of the Year with a stat line for the season of 21.6 points per game, 8.8 rebounds per game, and 4.6 assists per game. For the eighth time in eight years, the Raider men’s volleyball team finished first in the GNAC in the regular season and earned the No. 1 seed in the GNAC Tournament. The team reached the finals before losing a fiveset match (13-15 set 5) to Lasell College.

Senior Chris Markuson (Cupertino, Calif.) finished his career as the GNAC Player of the Year and the Rivier Athlete of the Year.

Markuson was named Rookie of the Year his freshman year and was selected to the GNAC All-Conference First Team each of his four years at Rivier. Sophomore setter Tyler Blank (Rochester, N.Y.) was selected to the GNAC All-Conference Second Team, and senior Matt Tutino (Manorville, N.Y.) and freshman Grant Andler (Chicago, Ill.) to the GNAC All-Conference Third Team.

At the year-end awards ceremony, several Rivier student-athletes were recognized for their 2014-2015 achievements. Sophomores Nicole Scotti (Concord, N.H.), softball, and Adam Arkell (Dover, N.H.), baseball, were recognized as the 2015 Scholar-Athletes of the Year. Both had the highest cumulative GPA for a female and male student-athlete with at least sophomore status. Scotti is an English education major. Arkell is a homeland and international security major.

“WHAT IS A MEANINGFUL LIFE?”

The answers to this question are as plentiful as the people on this earth, and they are what guide Dr. Naomi Schoenfeld’s life’s work.

Dr. Schoenfeld began her career as a special education elementary school teacher, working primarily with emotional and behavioral needs (EBD) students. Receiving a generous doctoral scholarship allowed her to pursue her Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction, and she became a full-time student in 2005. Research and college-level teaching emerged as her new passions while she advanced through her doctoral work.

When a position opened at Rivier University, she quickly realized the unique combination of undergraduate special education and graduate EBD programs, along with the new doctoral program, perfectly suited all her interests.

Fast forward six years and Dr. Schoenfeld continues to teach at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and she provides leadership for several University programs and committees. She is a faculty member in the doctoral program and an advisor to the student teams that organize the annual Doctoral Conference on Leadership and Learning. An active researcher, Dr. Schoenfeld has published and presented her findings regularly at national conferences.

She also volunteers her time and talents

to several nonprofit organizations and is a strong advocate for children with behavioral challenges.

Dr. Schoenfeld believes instilling an awareness of individual student needs is the greatest lesson for her students.

“The most valuable thing that I try to teach is a special kind of awareness,” she says. “The work of a special educator is never done. There are still so many children with exceptionalities who are invisible to the system, or whose disabilities are misunderstood or could be better accommodated. If I can teach my students to notice what others may not, and to then act on what they see, then I’ve done my job well.”

Engagement with students and colleagues provides vital support. “I value the opportunity to work every day with colleagues and students who share the desire to make a positive difference,” she says. “And I enjoy the connection with students—the ways in which the dialogue between us leads us all to a greater appreciation of special education, and an ever-increasing understanding of how we can best support children and youth with special needs.”

learning in real-world settings. “One of the most exciting things I see is what happens outside of the classroom—the ways in which undergraduate students in our special education program have become active in the community,” Dr. Schoenfeld shares.

“They are making a real difference and that is a wonderful thing to see.”

In addition to her teaching and administrative responsibilities, Dr. Schoenfeld continues to conduct research.

Much of her research focuses on defining new meanings of success and how to best achieve those successes. She contends that “financial success is not necessarily the pinnacle of perfection. There are all types of success.” These definitions vary not only by individual capacity, but also by cultural constructs.

Classes Taught Undergraduate HD 200 – Introduction to Human Exceptionality

Working in collaboration with a faculty colleague in Saudi Arabia, her most recent research project and Current Issues in Education article addressed a new teaching approach to food preparation for young Saudi women with mild intellectual disabilities.

“Since cooking is a culturally important activity in Saudi Arabia, mastering it is an important step in the lives of these young women, both personally and in regard to their ability to be part of their family and community,” says Dr. Schoenfeld. “It can mean the difference between being treated like a child or an adult for their entire life.”

Maintaining an active voice for special educators and special needs students, Dr. Schoenfeld serves on the Board of Trustees for the New England Faculty Development Consortium and the Council for Exceptional

Children (New Hampshire). She is fulfilling a leadership role as Board president for the Council for Children with Behavior Disorders Foundation.

She volunteers in area schools to connect with elementary classroom students and special education teachers.

“I enjoy spending time with younger students,” she says. “Being in the schools is really the only way to stay in touch with current educational practices.”

“Mine is a mission of transformations— of moving people in positive directions so everyone can be successful,” says Dr. Schoenfeld. Each person’s unique successes contribute to the substance of their life and provide far-reaching and profound answers to the question, “What is a meaningful life?”

MAKINGNEWS Director of the Public Health program and Nursing Instructor Bobbie Bagley ʼ97/ʼ14G attended the 2014 Undergraduate Education for Public Health Summit in New Orleans, Louisiana. Participation in the summit provided her the opportunity to explore new approaches to designing, delivering, and assessing curricula and implementing experiential learning activities and innovative teaching strategies. Bagley was also named to the New Hampshire Public Health Association Board of Directors this spring.

Professors of English Dr. Timothy Doherty and Dr. Bradford Stull, and Assistant Director for Library User Services Shawna Smith presented at the First-Year Experience National Conference in Dallas, Texas this February. Presentation topics included: peer mentor programs; student success initiatives; and library instruction and the first-year seminars.

Assistant Professor of Modern Languages, Spanish and Italian Dr. Christine Giacalone was featured in The Hippo article “Speaking Of.” The article offers insights on learning a new language without or in addition to formal instruction.

Rivier students from the public health and nursing programs culminated Public Health Week activities by attending the NH Public Health Association Annual Meeting held at the Christa McAuliffe Discovery Center in Concord. Senior Associate for Global Engagement Dey Barriga traveled to Dubai this spring to meet with Rivier’s IDP Education partners. IDP Education is a world leader in international student placement services with 80 centers across the globe helping students from 32 countries.

Senior Lecturer in Philosophy Dr. John Caiazza has had two essays published on virtue ethics. “History, Tradition and Virtue Ethics” appeared in the spring 2014 issue of Modern Age, and “Paradigms, Traditions and History: The Informed of Philosophy of Science on MacIntyre’s Ethical Thought” was featured in the fall 2014 issue of the American Catholic Philosophical Quarterly.

Professor of Education Dr. Diane Connell presented the workshop “Using Brain-based Strategies to Enhance your Personal Life and Nursing Career” at the 2nd Annual Staff Development Seminar for School Nurses, hosted by the Rivier University Division of Nursing and Health Professions.

She also attended a Learning & the Brain conference in November 2014 titled “Making Lasting Memories: Using Brain Science to boost Memory, Thinking, and Learning.”

Professor Emeritus Dr. Sharon Dean’s debut novel Tour de Trace was published October 2014. A murder mystery, set along Mississippi’s Natchez Trace, finds protagonist Susan Warner—a recently retired teacher—searching out the culprit.

Associate Professor of English Dr. Sally Hirsh-Dickinson, also a board member for the New Hampshire Writers’ Project, sat on the selection committee that named the first four authors inducted into the newly established New Hampshire Literary Hall of Fame. Inductees include Robert Frost, Donald Hall, John Irving, and Grace Metalious.

Associate Professor of Education Dr. Gagan “Mia” Khera, below, has been elected to the Executive Board of the Asian American Psychological Association, South Asian Americans Division.

Professor of Mathematics Dr. Teresa Magnus attended the Conference Board of the Mathematical Sciences 2014 Fall Forum on Success in the First Two Years.

Forum participants explored new directions and recommendations for teaching collegiate mathematics and revising mathematics majors.

Associate Professor of Business and Associate Vice President for Global Engagement Dr. Mark Meehan, below, traveled to China, Japan, and the Philippines this spring developing new relationships and strengthening current partnerships.

Professor and Coordinator of the History, Political Science, and Criminal Justice Department Dr. Martin Menke chaired panels at the New England Historical Association’s fall and spring conferences, and he was elected to a five-year term as Executive Secretary of the Association.

Dr. Menke gave a presentation and chaired the session “The Church in Revolutionary Times” at the American Catholic Historical Association/American Historical Association’s January meeting.

Director of Financial Aid Valerie Patnaude has been named President-elect of the New Hampshire Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators. After serving as President-elect during 2015, she will assume the role of President for the Association in 2016. Patnaude and Financial Aid Analyst Kelly Ingerson met with representatives from the offices of Senator Ayotte and

Congressman Guinta to discuss the higher education legislative proposals that impact state financial aid administrators and their schools at the National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators Leadership Conference. Ingerson also attended the “New and Aspiring Directors” Conference, which was held concurrently with the Leadership Conference in March.

Karen H. Schedin, Vice President for Enrollment, was elected the 2015 President of the New England Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers (NEACRAO). She served as President-elect last year and previously as the organization's Vice President for Enrollment Management. NEACRAO is the regional organization of the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers, supporting the professional development of more than 1,000 members representing approximately 400 institutions throughout New England.

Education Instructor Lisa Strout presented two sessions at the Annual Professional Development Day hosted in March at World Academy in Nashua. Session topics included “Adult Learning Theories and Emotional Intelligence” and “Executive Functioning: Supporting 21st Century Skills for Success.” Strout has been named to a two-year appointment as Professional Development and Accreditation Chair for the N.H. Association for the Education of Young Children.

Dean of Business and Assistant Professor Dr. Amir Toosi, below, presented “Win-Win-Win Situations for all Stakeholders” at the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs Northeastern Region 1 Conference in October 2014.

Associate Professor of Business Dr. Karen Spohn, below, presented “Materiality Matrices and Transaction Costs” in the Economics Track of the March 2015 International Academy of Business and Economics in Orlando, Florida. This research will be incorporated in her new course Sustainable Value offered in fall 2015.

Associate Professor and Director of the Doctorate of Psychology program Dr. Robert Walrath attended the annual meetings of the Clinical Directors of School Psychology Programs and the Council of Counseling Psychology Training Programs.

Additionally, he published a review of the Insight Test of Cognitive Abilities in the Journal of Psychoeducational Assessment, August 2014 issue.

Love of teaching creates a legacy of learning AN ACCOMPLISHED ENTREPRENEUR,

Mary Murphy ’04G started her career in the high technology field, traveling extensively around the world and eventually becoming Vice President of Marketing at several high tech firms, and then General Manager of a global division at IBM. This role required extensive domestic and international travel which took her out of the country for weeks at a time. After her father became ill, she made the decision to resign this position and move closer to home to care for her father and later, her mother.

Coming from a family with a true vocation as educators—her father was a reading specialist and her mother was the

head of the business department at a local high school—it was no surprise that she then decided to pursue a career in special education focused on teaching mathematics.

Murphy earned her Master’s in Education from Rivier and taught math to students with special needs at Manchester West High School. Her most enjoyable experience in this position was mentoring students in their first Investment Club. “My 11 student teams ranked in the top 25 out of 350 teams, including Dartmouth College,” said Murphy.

“I was very proud of them.”

in a row, Murphy decided to return to her business roots as a financial advisor first for USB Financial Services and then MassMutual Financial Group.

In 2011, after a thorough vetting of thousands of applicants, Murphy was named the first-in-the-country Independent Branch Leader at Charles Schwab & Co. Inc., as part of a franchise arrangement in which Murphy owns a branch in Nashua. Murphy is most proud of this accomplishment. “I had to survive a very rigorous selection process, and I am now in a position to create a legacy by pioneering a new model in the financial services industry and helping hundreds of families achieve their financial goals,” says Murphy.

A leader in the financial services arena, Murphy received two major awards from Charles Schwab & Co. Inc. in 2014. The prestigious ICON Award recognizes an Independent Branch Leader for their dedication to professional excellence, demonstration of exceptional growth, and outstanding all-around achievement. She was also nominated by her peers for the Peer Excellence Award—recognized as the Independent Branch Leader who provided exceptional support, mentorship, and collegiality by actively participating in the Independent Branch Community. This is the second time Murphy received this award since opening her branch in 2011.

Last year, Murphy launched the Southern NH Money Club, a free and open group dedicated to the financial education of women. The club offers information and strategies on topics such as savings, credit card debt, mortgages, retirement, investing, and other money matters, taking into account the unique challenges that women often face. She also provides financial support to many charities including Vision International Missions, which operates the Ti Palmiste Community Orphanage in LaGonave, Haiti. The orphanage houses and cares for children orphaned by a devastating earthquake in 2011.

The skills instilled by her Rivier professors continue to serve Murphy well, and her love of learning and education is at the heart of her work and all that she does. “They taught me about multiple intelligences and communications styles, which have helped me in both my education and current financial services careers.” Murphy approaches her role at Charles Schwab and other areas of her life as an educator—using her solid educational foundation to teach people how to be financially savvy and successful. “The best advisors teach their clients how to fish, rather than fish for them,” says Murphy.

After 39 years of teaching in New Hampshire, Laura (Morin) Cooney ʼ68 retired in June. She looks forward to more free time to visit her grandchildren in Ohio and New York. Her sixth grandchild is expected in July.

1970ʼs Bettina Brownyard

ʼ71, above, fondly remembers her time at Rivier. She retired early to enjoy time with her family— including four grandsons and one granddaughter, a horse and five dogs, and to continue her volunteer work with animal rescue. She spends summers on Shelter Island and winters in Vermont. Bettina continues to enjoy traveling with her husband Brendan.

1980ʼs Ellen Moloney ʼ80

has been named Chief Operating Officer/Senior Vice President at Newton-Wellesley Hospital in Massachusetts. She has served as Senior Vice President for Outpatient Services since 2002. Ellen joined the hospital in 1997 as the Director of Clinical Ancillary Services and has been instrumental in the design and planning of new services and programs.

Manon (Lawson) Angelo ʼ89 recently published the book I Found Someone to Play With. The work is a biography of former Negro Leagues catcher and outfielder Larry LeGrande. The last member of the Satchel Paige All-Stars, LeGrande played with this traveling baseball team from 1961 to 1963.

1990ʼs Rebecca Young ʼ90 has accepted the position of Assistant Director of Visitor Services at the Mystic Seaport: Museum of America and the Sea. Located in Mystic, Connecticut, it is the largest maritime museum in the world.

Anthony T. Herda ʼ93G has published an autobiography titled The Life of a Software Developer.

Among other things, Anthony writes about his fond memories of Rivier and is grateful for the time he spent here. A signed copy of his book has been added to the Special Collections in Regina Library.

Paul Spitale ʼ94G has been appointed to the position of Senior Vice President of Commercial Programs at Colt Defense in Hartford, Connecticut. As the new head of Commercial Programs, Paul will be responsible for leading all aspects of the commercial strategy. This includes commercial program sales, marketing, product development, and licensing.

Cindy Arcieri ʼ96/ʼ04G has been appointed the Vice President of Patient Care Services/Chief Nurse Executive position at St. Joseph Hospital in Nashua. Cindy is responsible for leading the nursing division in all inpatient and outpatient care; hospital service departments, centers, and home health care; and the St. Joseph School of Nursing.

Mary Ellen Cooper ʼ96/ʼ03G and her sister co-founded Into Action Recovery, Inc. in an effort to fight the opiate addiction epidemic in their community. The nonprofit organization aims to open a treatment center in Tewksbury, Massachusetts or nearby community with the mission of providing a longterm educational, therapeutic, and spiritual 12-Step program for adults with opiate and/or alcohol addiction.

Mary Ellen is a Nurse Practitioner at the Tewksbury Hospital.

Dr. Chrisann (Carta) Merriman ʼ96, above, is now the Director of Online Faculty Development at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor in Belton, Texas. She also serves the University as Associate Professor of Marketing.

Stephanie (Midolo) Vaughan ʼ96 and The Morgan Leary Vaughan Fund were awarded a grant by the Petit Family Foundation to produce their first educational initiative: a free, audio podcast series about necrotizing enterocolitis. The podcasts will be one-on-one conversations with relevant experts highlighting current prevention, diagnosis, and treatment for the disease and the search for a cure.

Sarah Larson ʼ98 has been promoted to Senior Vice President of Human Resources at Foundation Medicine, Inc. in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Sarah joined the company in 2010 as one of its first employees and has led the human resources department since her arrival. She has contributed her expertise in strategic organizational development, employee relations, and alignment of human resources in support of the company’s rapid growth.

2000ʼs Colleen Badger Rice ʼ00 self-published her first book Rare but not Alone, Raising Kids with Cyclic Vomiting Syndrome in December 2014. She currently lives in Nashua with her husband and six children.

Steve Lebel ʼ03 received his Doctorate of Education from Northeastern University. His dissertation topic explores how fourth grade teachers in New Hampshire are implementing the Common Core State Standards.

Richard Boardman ʼ07G was named principal of North Hampton School in North Hampton, New Hampshire. His appointment is effective in July.

Paul Shea ʼ07, above, was chosen as one of New Hampshire’s “40 Under Forty,” which recognizes the state’s brightest young achievers with a record of professional and volunteer accomplishments. Paul is a registered nurse and was named the Executive Director of Great American Downtown Nashua, an economic revitalization program, in February 2015.

Carolanne Donovan ʼ11 has joined Wedu, a marketing firm in Manchester, in a newly created position titled Social Media Storyteller.

She develops and executes social media strategies and digital marketing campaigns for clients such as Mass Save, the New Hampshire Liquor Commission, and others.

Kerry Morrissey ʼ12/14G received the Nurse of the Year 2015 award from her employer, Southern New Hampshire Medical Center, “in recognition for providing a higher level of care and excellence in service to patients and co-workers.” Kerry works in the Emergency Department, serves on many hospital committees, and is a Unit Magnet Champion.

Christina Lopez Negron ʼ13G was appointed as special education case manager at Marston Elementary in Hampton, New Hampshire. She has found the staff to be very supportive and feels as though she is part of a small family.
