HEARTS & MINDS SERVING THE WORLD Message from the President Dear Friends of Rivier, As the fall weather settles upon us in New Hampshire, I invite you to share the many dimensions of the Rivier experience highlighted in this issue. Students returned to campus in September and have been champions in maintaining a safe community through best practices of masking and social distancing. As an institution, we have been very fortunate. We share this same hope for you and your family during these continuing days of COVID-19.

Rivier continues to create a vibrant and engaging academic experience supporting students in a pathway from campus to career. The cover story celebrates the completion of our newest academic facility with its focus on science on display and experiential learning. The Science and Innovation Center holds the promise that Rivier will be a beacon to our region’s economy as a partner in developing a workforce embracing the disciplines of biology, biotechnology, nursing, public health, and health science.

As May’s Commencement celebration moved to August, the Class of 2020 joined together on their own “Field of Dreams.” Graduates sat distanced on the infield of Northeast Delta Dental Stadium and embraced a moment in which their families and friends could celebrate their resilience as they crossed home plate to receive their diploma.

The University’s “Taking the Ice in 2021” initiative will bring men’s and women’s ice hockey to Raiders athletics with Nashua’s own Conway Arena serving as our home ice. This expansion of athletics will allow the University to advance not only the student experience, but academic programs in sport management and the health sciences.

This issue also highlights alumni serving on the front lines. These are real people with real stories of success who have used their Rivier education to contribute to safer and healthier communities. To each of you serving your community and advancing our mission, we salute you!

Rivier nurses provide acute care overseas Rivier undergraduate and graduate nursing students traveled to Tanzania last February to provide medical assistance to this small East African nation. Led by faculty members Dr. Marilyn Daley and Jennifer Thompson, students spent 10 days providing a variety of general medical, nursing, and pharmacy services.

Despite the beauty of the wildliferich Serengeti plains and Mount Kilimanjaro, the country faces many challenges—poor infrastructure, low education levels, poverty, and diseases—including a shortage of health professionals and little to no access to healthcare services.

Rivier rises to the COVID-19 challenge In March 2020, COVID-19 presented new and immediate challenges globally. As Rivier students, faculty, and staff transitioned to a remote environment, the University stepped up to support the health and safety needs of the Greater Nashua community.

“Rivier was grateful to be in a position to assist local healthcare providers and community members with donations of medical and protective gear,” says Sister Paula Marie Buley, IHM. “It was our privilege to support our neighbors in the fight against COVID-19.”

“In many instances, we were supporting nursing and public health alumni working on the front lines,” says Dr. Paula Williams, Dean of the Division of Nursing and Health Professions. “Rivier has graduated more nurses than any other institution in the state. It was tremendously rewarding to help our Rivier family and members of our local community.”

New Early Acceptance Program provides financial incentives

The Office of Undergraduate Admissions introduced an early acceptance program for prospective students. The Rivier Early Acceptance Program (REAP) offered qualified students who applied and visited campus the opportunity to receive an on-the-spot acceptance and several financial incentives, in addition to a competitive financial aid package.

REAP students receive up to $2,500 in additional grant awards and one free course when they follow a streamlined application process and apply by November 25.

“Streamlining the application process was a win for students, their families, and Rivier,” says Paul Brower, Rivier’s Vice President for Enrollment Management. “Same-day acceptances and REAP financial awards removed a good deal of the waiting and the worrying that so often accompany college admissions and add stress for high school seniors in their final year.”

The REAP program had a positive impact on both the volume of campus visits this fall and acceptances for fall 2021.

KinderCare at Rivier University to open in January

Rivier has entered an agreement with KinderCare Education to lease and operate the early childhood center previously managed by the University.

KinderCare at Rivier University will care for and educate infants through pre-K children with operating hours that align to working families’ schedules. The center is prepared to enroll students upon receipt of their license by the State of New Hampshire.

“The University welcomes KinderCare Education,” says Sister Paula Marie Buley, IHM. “We appreciate the valuable resources KinderCare will provide to the Greater Nashua community and their strong support for early childhood education.”

Rivier welcomes new vice presidents

Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Brian Ernsting, Vice President for Enrollment Management Paul Brower, and Vice President for Finance and Administration Steven Perrotta joined the Rivier community this year.

Dr. Ernsting serves as the University’s principal academic officer, providing leadership to faculty and oversight of more than 70 academic degree programs. As a member of the senior leadership team, he advances Rivier’s strategic growth through the development of innovative academic programming and initiatives. Prior to joining the University, he served as Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of Faculty at Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa.

Dr. Ernsting’s research has been published in national and international science journals, and he is active in new faculty mentorship and professional development programs. He earned his Ph.D. in

Biological Chemistry and Cellular and Molecular Biology from the University of Michigan.

Paul Brower directs Rivier’s enrollment and admissions operations, retention, advisement, and career services. As a member of the senior leadership team, Brower works to leverage financial aid and recruitment strategies to drive enrollment growth at the undergraduate, professional studies, graduate, and doctoral levels.

Most recently, he served as Dean of Admissions at Nichols College in Dudley, Massachusetts. In addition to Brower’s background in enrollment, he served as Nichols College’s Head Men’s and Women’s Tennis coach, where he led his teams to 13 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) championships and was recognized as CCC Coach of the Year six times during his tenure.

Brower holds an M.S. in Professional Communications from Clark University.

Steven Perrotta provides executive leadership of the University’s finance and operations departments with oversight of Student Financial Services, the Finance Office, Human Resources, Facilities Management, and auxiliary services.

Over the course of his career, Perrotta has held accounting positions in the Greater Boston area and several leadership roles in the University System of New Hampshire. As Assistant Vice President for Finance at Granite State College, he was honored with the Bradford K. Perry Award for outstanding service. He also is a past member of the Hooksett, New Hampshire Budget Committee.

Perrotta holds an MBA from the University of New Hampshire.

He successfully completed the Administrative Management Institute program at Cornell University and is a Leadership Greater Manchester program graduate.

New academic programs support workforce needs

The University has expanded its contribution to the healthcare workforce with the launch of a bachelor’s degree in Health Science.

“The existing shortage of U.S. healthcare workers is escalating,” says Dr. Paula Williams, Dean of Nursing and Health Professions. “According to the U.S. Department of Labor, one third of all new jobs added to the economy will be related to healthcare.

This Health Science major is a muchneeded response to workforce and market demands.”

Also new for the 2020-21 academic year, two 4+1 programs address the U.S. shortage of highly skilled computer science professionals. Now Rivier’s Cybersecurity Management or Mathematics majors can earn a Master of Science in Computer Science degree with just one additional year of study.

“Rivier’s commitment to innovation in the sciences is enhancing students’ academic and career opportunities,” says Dr. Brian Ernsting, Vice President for Academic Affairs. “Graduates of these new 4+1 programs will secure rewarding positions, be prepared to make an immediate impact in their organizations, and advance quickly.”

‘Give a Mask, Get a Mask’ campaign provided limitededition Raiders masks to students

Alumni and friends who made a gift to the Rivier University Fund in October supported Rivier students in more ways than one. In addition to providing support for critical initiatives including athletics, scholarships, and more, donors also helped keep Rivier students healthy on campus this fall.

For each gift of $25 or more, the University gifted a Raiders mask to a Rivier student on the donor’s behalf.

As a “thank you,” the donor also received a mask of their own. Thank you to all those who participated and showed their Rivier spirit!

Golf Classic Fundraiser drives student-athlete success

The University hosted its 23rd annual Golf Classic Fundraiser at Nashua Country Club in September. The event was supported by more than 30 corporate sponsors and friends including Premier Sponsors All Metals Industries and People’s United Bank.

The event raised $46,000 to benefit student-athletes and to provide our Raiders Athletics program with the best health and fitness resources.

“The support of alumni and friends provides opportunities for our athletes to excel, both on and off the playing fields and courts,” says Vice President for University Advancement Karen Cooper ’03G. “Most importantly, our students know they have the support of an outstanding community that respects the effort and determination that drives their success.”

$295K Department of Justice grant expands Project CARE

Colleges and universities across the nation are making it a priority to educate students about issues of stalking, domestic and dating violence, and sexual assault. A recent $295,000 Department of Justice grant will allow Rivier to continue its investment in education for these important topics through Project CARE—Campus Awareness for Raiders to End Issues of Sexual Assault, Domestic Violence, Dating Violence & Stalking.

The grant will fund Rivier’s Project CARE Director position; expansion of education initiatives related to gender-based violence; an expanded partnership with Bridges, Nashua’s domestic and sexual violence support advocate; and ongoing efforts to increase awareness on campus.

The University congratulates the CARE Task Force, headed by Vice President for Student Affairs Kurt Stimeling, for its efforts in obtaining this grant and advancing the University’s mission to engage in dialog about basic human issues facing society.

Rivier’s Board of Trustees expands expertise with new appointments

Mr. Robert Calamari, Jr. and Dr. Melissa Wu have joined Rivier’s Board of Trustees. Their expertise in business management and healthcare enhances the University leadership team’s resources in these two critical fields.

“As the University advances its commitment to 21st-century workforce development and innovation in the sciences, Mr. Calamari and Dr. Wu will make significant contributions to leading Rivier’s growth,” shares Sister Paula Marie Buley, IHM. “Their vast experience and community connections offer opportunities for greater awareness and engagement with regional partners.”

Robert Calamari is a Senior Vice President at Bank of America in Boston. He leads the Corporate Reputation Management Team working with key stakeholders.

His expertise extends to research, strategy formulation, marketing, corporate finance, corporate communications, public policy, and relationship management.

Mr. Calamari holds an MBA from Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College.

Dr. Melissa Wu is a physician and Medical Director at Immediate Care of Southern New Hampshire/ Southern New Hampshire Health. She

received her M.D. from the University of Virginia School of Medicine and completed her fellowship and residency at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. She is Board Certified in Emergency Medicine.

In addition to her medical degree, Dr. Wu earned an MBA at the Johns Hopkins Carey Business School.

Nursing and business programs receive top rankings

Rivier University took the top spot in an independent evaluation of online RN to BSN programs in New Hampshire. Ranked #1 by RegisteredNursing.org, Rivier’s online RN to BSN program provides the quality and flexibility required for working RNs to receive their bachelor’s degree.

“We are honored with this top nursing recognition, which naturally extends from our program to our students,” says Paula Williams, Dean of Nursing and Health Professions. “Rivier BSNeducated nurses improve their patient outcomes, enjoy greater job mobility, and have more opportunities for career advancement.”

Rivier University’s online MBA in Healthcare Administration earned a ranking in the top five of U.S. programs in a national education survey of nearly 8,000 institutions.

In its 2020 rankings, EduMed named Rivier’s MBA as one of today’s best programs for online learning in healthcare management. “Graduates of our program are uniquely qualified to lead hospitals and healthcare organizations in today’s dynamic and constantly evolving environment,” shares Dr. Amir Toosi, Rivier’s Dean of Business and Security Studies.

Commencement honors accomplishments of 2020 graduates in unprecedented times

The University celebrated its 85th Commencement on August 16, awarding 544 degrees to 2020 graduates. Delayed three months due to restrictions on large gatherings, the socially distanced event was held outside at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium in Manchester.

“Last spring Rivier announced that we would honor the accomplishments of our graduates in person consistent with public health guidelines,” said Sister Paula Marie Buley, IHM. “On August 16th, it was our privilege to fulfill that 7

commitment. While the ceremony looked different than any other, it conveyed the spirit of Rivier and acknowledged the tremendous work of our graduates, especially in these challenging times.”

Student speaker Hope Cataldo of North Haverhill, New Hampshire, spoke with pride to the Class of 2020’s perseverance and resilience in the face of change. “We decided that our education was far more important than any strange or unusual predicament the world threw at us,”

said Cataldo. “Our time at Rivier has proven that when there is adversity, there is also resilience, acceptance, love, and compassion. Rivier has transformed our hearts and minds to truly go out and serve the world.”

Adrianne Havlicek ’96 of Litchfield, New Hampshire, earned her MBA in Management this year and spoke on behalf of graduate students. She addressed the journeys of adult learners—individual paths connected by academic challenge and marked determination. “The highlight of

our journey has been achieved by all of us reaching our destination. This moment. This time. Right here. Right now.

Sharing this last moment—one of our most incredible moments—together.”

Altiora et Meliora—Higher and Better Rivier enters a new era of innovation in the sciences with the opening of the Science and Innovation Center

The opening of the Science and Innovation Center this fall serves as a pivotal moment in Rivier’s history. A cornerstone of Rivier’s Vision 2020 strategic plan, the Center ushers in a new era of innovation in the sciences. The University celebrated the completion of this milestone with a Dedication and Ribbon Cutting Ceremony in October. Local dignitaries, benefactors, Trustees, and University administration, faculty, staff, and students attended the event, which honored the many individuals whose leadership, talents, and dedication brought the facility to life.

“Our enthusiasm is not merely based on the completion of this project—it is amplified and energized as we anticipate a future full of promise,” said Sister Paula Marie Buley, IHM, Rivier’s President. “Today, Rivier recommits its resources to the work of understanding the natural world, whether it’s the vastness of the planets or the process of cell mitosis …

Our University’s core mission of transformation, our values of innovation, collaboration, integrity, service and faith, and a motto that has sustained us down through the years—Altiora et Meliora, Higher and Better—brings us to this new era.”

Karen Cooper ’03G, Vice President for University Advancement, recognized the University’s generous benefactors. “As we fulfill our Vision 2020, we do so with you proudly by our side. You transform our students’ experiences so they can go forth and transform the world.

To each and every one of our benefactors, we thank you for your partnership, and we know that we can’t do it without you,” said Cooper.

Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Brian Ernsting provided insight on the potential for future learning and discovery referencing enhanced classroom technology, expanded research opportunities, and students’ greater enthusiasm for study and exploration. “Students are training on the equipment and technology currently in use at cutting-edge scientific and biotech firms, and they are conducting research with faculty mentors in new, fully equipped laboratories. At graduation, our students will be well-positioned for the most desirable jobs and graduate programs,” said Dr. Ernsting.

Keily Pozo, a biology major from the Class of 2022, spoke on behalf of students, thanking those who made the facility possible and sharing her expectations, “With greater innovation in the sciences, we, as students, have an advantage and are one step ahead in the game. By furthering our research and use of technology, we will be better equipped to go out into the world and excel in the careers of our choosing—biotechnology, nursing, medicine, and more.”

Investment in the new Science and Innovation Center highlights the University’s commitment to advancing education in the life sciences. The 36,000-square-foot facility features state-of-the-art laboratories, equipment, learning spaces, and instructional technology to foster experiential learning. Students use the same advanced instrumentation that they would use in the workplace and in graduate study. The Science and Innovation Center will benefit all Rivier students, but especially those majoring in biology, biotechnology, nursing, health science, and public health.

The program began with an invocation and blessing offered by Sister Helene Cote, pm, Provincial Superior of the Sisters of the Presentation of Mary. She acknowledged those pioneering Sisters who advocated faith through science in years past; those who planned, supported, and participated in the building of the facility; the professors who will teach there; and, of course, Rivier students. “The task of shaping future leaders is one of immense importance,” she said.

“We pray for each and every student who will ever grace these halls—that their enthusiasm for learning will not ever wane. God’s blessings upon you as you embrace science and innovation as a way of life.”

Vision 2020, Higher and Better City of Nashua Mayor Jim Donchess recognized the University as a valuable community resource and partner.

“Rivier consistently responds to the needs of businesses and industries throughout our city and state as a partner in workforce development,” Mayor Donchess said.

“Their significant contributions each year to the nursing workforce, educating the largest number of nurses throughout New Hampshire, are critical to our state and region. This new facility is another significant contribution and another resource for the city of Nashua.”

New Biology Innovators Grant offers BIG reasons to visit Rivier During the dedication ceremony, Sister Paula announced the creation of the Biology Innovators Grant (BIG). The University is strengthening its commitment to innovation in the sciences through the launch of this scholarship for undergraduate students. “The University is invested in the advancement of the life sciences and establishing the Biology Innovators Grant demonstrates our commitment in a BIG way,” says Sister Paula.

Made possible through a generous $350,000 bequest from Vivian Cunha of the Class of 1965, incoming students pursuing biology and biotechnology degrees in fall 2021 will be awarded a $3,000 grant each year for four years for a total of $12,000 in financial support, in addition to a competitive financial aid package. Additional one-time grants are available to nursing students.

“We encourage students to go BIG and pursue their dream careers in the sciences,” says Paul Brower, Vice President for Enrollment Management. “The Biology Innovators Grant, new Science and Innovation Center, and the Rivier Early Acceptance Program incentives make a compelling case for students to apply to the University early this fall.

The world of science on display The Science and Innovation Center was designed to put the world of science on display and features glass walls showcasing the learning that takes place inside each classroom and lab. When students and visitors enter the lobby, they are greeted by a twelve-foot interactive, motion touch wall featuring content areas of anatomy and physiology, biology and biotechnology, chemistry, genetics, physics, environmental science, nursing and health science, public health, space and astronomy, and cybersecurity.

State-of-the-art laboratories foster experiential learning and collaborative spaces for faculty and student research.

The wall is populated and continually refreshed with hundreds of news headlines, videos, and photos directly from Science Photo Library and live subscription feeds from PBS, NOVA, and other scientific resources. Students can interact with 3-D models illustrating the human heart, skeleton, a synapse, and microbes. In addition, alumni stories, the University’s mission and heritage, and recognition of benefactors are incorporated into the display.

An array of monitors in the Great Room showcases the University’s social media feeds, and through an interactive touch screen, students can take their photo and add it to a Science in the World magazine cover and send it to display on the Great Room screen. Dual monitors in the lobby feature social media and science headlines, as well as a building map, academic and study tips, and more.

TAKING THE ICE IN 2021 It’s official. Men’s and women’s ice hockey will join the University’s roster of athletic teams in fall 2021, expanding to 15 intercollegiate teams.

At a live campus event, University leadership spoke to the benefits of bringing ice hockey to Rivier in support of Rivier’s mission and growth, a vibrant campus life, and as a point of pride and community engagement for the city of Nashua.

Building momentum “With the launch of men’s and women’s ice hockey programs, the University continues to demonstrate its deep commitment to college athletics and student success,” says Sister Paula Marie Buley, IHM. “Recruitment of athletes for these teams will add to recent momentum generated through the expansion of our athletics and academic facilities, launch of in-demand academic majors, and addition of early admission incentives.”

Through the Vision 2020 strategic plan, the University recently enhanced athletics facilities through the construction of the Linda Robinson Athletics Pavilion, the build-out of a softball venue, and the naming of Joanne Merrill Field. The facilities support both Raiders Athletics and community events. These projects are matched with the completion of the Science and Innovation Center and the introduction of new, in-demand degree programs in Health Science, Sport Management, Homeland and International Security, and Cybersecurity Management.

Learning and leadership Student recruitment and the search for head coaches for the men’s and women’s teams began in October. The University is seeking candidates that embrace a holistic approach to coaching and mentoring student-athletes.

“We’re looking for hockey coaches who share our deep belief in the value of Division III athletics, which prioritizes student-athletes as students first who develop skills for learning and leadership,” shares Joanne Merrill, Rivier’s Director of Athletics. “Rivier athletes receive an exceptional education enhanced by Division III competition in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC), teamwork, and opportunities through the University’s Employment Promise Program.”

Bringing hockey to the Gate City While expanding the University’s athletics offerings, the launch of ice hockey will also add collegiate-level competition to the city of Nashua.

“The addition of hockey is great news for local high school players who want to compete at the University level without leaving the state of New Hampshire,” says Brad Kreick, Chair of Rivier’s Board of Trustees and a former Division I ice hockey player. “Bringing college ice hockey to Nashua is a win for both the University and the city. We look forward to our inaugural teams taking the ice in 2021.”

Bobbie Bagley ’97/’14G Director of Public Health and Community Services City of Nashua, NH Bobbie Bagley tirelessly serves the Greater Nashua community working with city officials and others to keep citizens informed, prepared, and safe. “My job is to promote, preserve, and protect the health of our community and to lead the community response to emergent public health issues. The joint response to COVID-19 has been absolutely phenomenal. Everyone is working together including the City of Nashua, the Office of Emergency Management, hospitals, schools, and faith-based organizations. Together, as a community, we can stop the spread of this disease.”

Cynthia Arcieri ’96/’04G Director of Nursing Dana-Farber Cancer Institute In addition to serving and supporting patients and their families, Cynthia Arcieri has worked closely with her teams at Dana-Farber to ensure proper use of personal protective equipment and to train clinicians on how to perform symptom screening. “At times, I am screening patients at our doors and providing emotional support and education for them,” Cynthia said. “I feel blessed to be able to come to work and to provide care to those who are most vulnerable.”

Mailaja Mohammed ’16G Nurse Practitioner Holy Family Hospital/Southern NH Medical Center Mailaja Mohammed serves in leadership roles at two regional hospitals responsible for surge management as well as caring for COVID-19 patients. At the end of an evening shift last spring he shared, “At Holy Family, we are in the midst of what appears to be a surge. Tonight I was the admitting NP and most of the patients were COVID-19 positive. Although we have not had a surge at Southern NH, there are redeployment plans to move many of us, including myself, to the Emergency Room when it happens. We hope we prepared well, but not to see the surge come to fruition.

Irene Arévalo ’19 Medical/Surgical Nurse Southern NH Medical Center As a recent graduate, Irene Arévalo never imagined she would be a front line nurse during a pandemic, but quickly found herself providing critical care on a COVID-19 ward. “Working directly with COVID-19 patients has been challenging in many ways,” Irene told us, “but also rewarding in many others.” Amid the sadness and loss, Irene looks for the positive. “It brings me so much joy when a patient finally begins to improve.”

Melanie Spillane ’17 Epidemiologist/Data Scientist Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Working for the CDC in Fort Collins, Colorado, Melanie Spillane has worked to gather data for a case control study regarding risk factors for COVID-19 hospitalization.

“This involves interviewing recovered or recovering patients about their symptom progression and contact history, analyzing and modeling public health surveillance data, and creating data visualization tools.” Melanie’s service extends beyond her professional role. She supports her community by volunteering at a COVID-19 Recovery Center for homeless individuals providing a resource for those who fail the screening process when attempting to enter local shelters.

Richard Boardman ’07G Principal, Mount Pleasant Elementary School Nashua, NH School District For Richard Boardman and his leadership team at Mount Pleasant Elementary School, supporting students remains the top priority, but through remote learning their work extends even further. “Just as we aim to support the whole child during a typical school day, we are now working harder than ever to support the whole family,” Richard said. “By collaborating with our staff and families, we are providing not only educational material but more importantly social/emotional support and basic necessities that families need.”

Lindsey Sallese ’21G Director of Medical-Surgical Nursing Lahey Hospital & Medical Center As a nurse leader at Lahey Hospital & Medical Center, Lindsey ensures that nurses are supported and given the tools they need to succeed—a challenging responsibility during a healthcare crisis. Yet, Lindsey finds a reason to smile. Despite or due to the recent challenges presented, “This pandemic has brought the nursing team together in ways I never thought imaginable. I am proud to be part of this team and to watch the nurses rise to the occasion with compassion, dedication, and excellence. It is truly remarkable to witness.”

Johaida Jean-Francois ’13 Labor and Delivery Nurse NewYork-Presbyterian Allen Hospital A travel labor and delivery nurse, Johaida is serving in New York City, an area hard hit by the COVID-19 crisis. This past spring, she found herself coaching new moms and newborns through the birthing process at the height of the pandemic.

She tells us, “COVID-19 has visited, but I believe in my heart like any trouble, this virus can visit, but it cannot stay. We are treating our patients with compassion first and bringing competence and confidence to the front line.”

Celebrating the Class of 1970 We are honored to celebrate the 50th Reunion of the Class of 1970 and welcome these cherished graduates to the Golden Society. The recognition of alumni who reach this milestone reunion is a long-standing Rivier tradition. While we were unable to celebrate in person this year, each member received their commemorative pin.

A Lasting Legacy of Support Alumni and friends have had a direct and powerful impact on Rivier students by creating named scholarships and endowments through outright and planned gifts.

In addition to more than 70 existing scholarship funds, the following new scholarships will make a Rivier education accessible for our deserving students.

The Biology Innovators Grant provides scholarships to incoming students planning to study biology, biotechnology, and nursing in the University’s new Science and Innovation Center. The grant, renewable over four years, was made possible through the generous estate gift of alumna Vivian Cunha ’65/ ’72G. Committed to moving New Hampshire forward, the Montrone Family Charitable Lead Trust made a generous contribution for scholarships for Rivier students with the goal of making education accessible and affordable for as many deserving students as possible.

Northeast Delta Dental created the Nurse Practitioner Fellows Scholarship to provide financial support for graduate nursing students as they launch in-demand careers and prepare to deliver the full scope of primary care within a variety of healthcare settings.

The Michael ’09 MBA and Deborah Croatti Scholarship recognizes undergraduate students pursing business degrees with a desire to serve the business and local community with a commitment to leadership and ethics. Created by Rivier Board of Trustees member and alumnus Michael and his wife Deborah, the

scholarship recognizes their desire to support students on their educational path to degree completion.

The Brother Paul Demers S.C. Memorial Scholarship was recently awarded to two students in memory of his life and 30 years of faithful service to the Rivier community. The scholarship was created by his dear friend Dr. Ann McGreevy and devoted cousin Mrs. Claire Bilodeau to honor his enduring friendships, commitment to service, and lifelong love of teaching and learning.

Dedicated alumna and member of the Rivier Institute for Senior Education, Cheryl Cummings ’70/’92G generously offered the Cheryl Cummings ’70 Scholarship in her name to support a Rivier student pursuing a career in education.

The Steven Spongberg ’04 Memorial Scholarship was created by his parents, Daniel and Joanne, to remember his life and Rivier University education. In memory of his dedicated participation in the Student Government Association and the Rivier Theater Company as a member of the Class of 2004, the scholarship was awarded to students who actively and enthusiastically participate in these student organizations as Steven did at Rivier.

Community, connections, and compassion motivate Kevin Conley ’13 to a life of service, working both behind the scenes and on the front lines to make a difference.

BY MICHELLE MARRONE Your profession and volunteerism make clear your heart for service.

When did you realize your passion for helping others?

Kevin: My parents were very involved when we were growing up; getting our family involved in sports and other activities continued to introduce us to different communities. Connections we made through these different community groups opened opportunities for us to get more involved. My Catholic education also influenced my desire to serve others. I am grateful to all the coaches, teachers, family friends, and to my parents who instilled a strong set of values and demonstrated the positive impacts I could strive to have on others.

You are a 16-year volunteer at Camp Fatima Exceptional Citizens' Week.

What keeps you involved?

Kevin: Camp Fatima Exceptional Citizens’ (EC) Week is a summer camp opportunity for children and adults with physical and intellectual disabilities. For most of my years at camp, I have volunteered as a counselor working with a camper 1:1 for the week to ensure they have the best experience. EC Week is a unique type of service. For many who volunteer, it is a week of reflection on our own personal challenges and how we overcome them. The motto repeated continuously during the week is “Love in Action”; my explanation does not fully describe the impact it has on me personally.

You’ve chosen a career in emergency management. How did Rivier help prepare you?

Kevin: I completed my senior internship with the Emergency Management Department at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. Two key projects included working as a member of the Emergency Management Team to coordinate the hospital’s response to a public health emergency declared by the Governor of Massachusetts related to flu and to the response plan for the 2013 Boston Marathon. On the morning of the Boston Marathon, I participated in the Emergency Department’s set-up for the expected surge of marathon runners and spectators. Just after the first explosion, we received notification to be on stand-by, and I transitioned to actively supporting the Emergency Department medical team as patients arrived. The hospital’s ability to manage the crisis as well as they did was a direct result of the Emergency Management Team’s advance planning and organization. This internship experience still shapes my career track today.

How has your career evolved?

Kevin: These first few years have proved to be formative. With advice and help from a few mentors, I finished my master’s in Emergency Management at Mass. Maritime Academy in 2016.

After completing my degree, I found an opportunity as the Emergency

Management Coordinator at Lowell General Hospital and am currently working as the Emergency Management Coordinator for UMass Lowell.

How has your service on Rivier’s Business and Homeland Security Advisory Councils impacted you?

Kevin: I appreciate Rivier’s effort to engage professionals in various fields that students may find attractive. I have seen the effect the Advisory Councils have on students—the input from field professionals is used to adapt and develop meaningful curriculum for their success.

What is the most meaningful aspect of service to you?

Kevin: I enjoy seeing the impact. In my field, I often see the effect a training or exercise will have on the participants or the agencies drafting the plans. The successful response by the entire city of Boston during the Boston Marathon in 2013 was a demonstration of the impact the planning process can have.

Future plans? What’s next for you?

Kevin: I am very excited to join Rivier’s Division of Business and Security Studies as an adjunct faculty member in the Homeland Security and International Studies Program. I am teaching the HLS 300 Emergency Management course this fall and truly enjoy sharing my practical experience with students.

Sonya Fonseca, Ph.D. ’02 Principal Scientist II | Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research

INSPIRING THE NEXT GENERATION OF SCIENTISTS Dr. Sonya Fonseca, Class of 2002, is a Principal Scientist II for Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research, a global pharmaceutical company that utilizes innovative science and technology to address and reimagine medicine. Knowing that heart disease and stroke are the world’s leading cause of death, Dr. Fonseca was motivated to pursue a career as a research scientist in the field of cardiovascular disease. “There is a high unmet medical need in this area, and I wanted to be involved in making medicines for patients to improve their quality of life, and hopefully someday find a cure.” Her scientific contributions at Novartis are leading directly to novel medications for heart failure. Dr. Fonseca is also involved in studentmentoring programs. In her own words, “Science is a field where you can continually grow and learn new things every day. While this is definitely a key motivator, my real passion lies in helping patients. If I can have a small part in this process, this is all the motivation I need.”

Barbara J. (Zajchowski) Nekula ’79 is a Registered Renal Dietitian for DaVita Kidney Care. She has been working on the front line screening patients for two home dialysis units in Baltimore City and Glen Burnie, MD.

Michael Tanner ’90G joined Chief Outsiders, LLC as a Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) where he works to help businesses gain profitable growth and accelerated market adoption. He specializes in marketing and sales programs for innovative technology businesses of all sizes and categories.

Natasha (Ondzes) Kolehmainen ’98G has been named Assistant Superintendent for School Administrative Unit (SAU) 24 in Henniker, NH.

1980s John O’Shea ’80G was recently elected a member of the Board of Directors for the U.S. Army Officer Candidate School Alumni Association.

John enlisted as a private in 1968 and retired as a colonel in 1999, earning his commission as a second lieutenant from the Infantry OCS in 1969. He and his wife Mary Ellen currently reside in Burke, VA.

1990s Lina (Tenney) Stewart ’90G volunteers with DemCastUSA, a non-profit online media organization, as the Social Media Leader for the state of New Hampshire.

Tracy (Hautanen) Kriel ’00G is the lead for Data Modeling and Data Lineage at Cigna, a health services organization based in Bloomfield, CT. In this position, she sets the policies, standards, and best practices for data modeling across the company. Tracy is also on the Executive Leadership Council for Erwin, Inc., a leading data modeling software vendor.

Steve Lebel ’03 was invited to speak at Cambridge University on the topic of supporting teachers transitioning into leadership roles. He was also recently selected to be part of the inaugural Klawe Fellowship with EdReports. Steve will be designing a toolkit to provide New Hampshire teachers resources to advocate for quality classroom curricular materials.

Ronald Fussell ’05G is a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Education at Creighton University in Omaha, NE, where he serves as a core faculty member in the M.S. in Educational Leadership program.

In May of 2020, Dr. Fussell was awarded the inaugural Outstanding Graduate Mentor Award. This award recognizes a Graduate School faculty member who positively influences student academic success and fosters an environment that is supportive of graduate students through personal care and interest.

Joanne Carota ’08G published her debut novel, The Docks, which was inspired by Rivier’s own Detective Fiction class. In The Docks, Joanne weaves a tale of family, loyalty, and the war between the modern and the traditional commercial fishing industry. Currently, she teaches writing at the University of Massachusetts Lowell.

Clint Whelan ’09 currently works for KPMG International as a Senior Associate Advisory within the Enterprise Solutions group. KPMG International is a global network of professional firms providing audit, tax, and advisory services.

2010s Ryan Fay ’10 is the Managing Director of the New England and New York regions for John Hancock Investment Management.

He is responsible for investment management distribution of mutual funds in qualified retirement plans and works with financial advisors and consultants to help distribute these strategies.

Cassidy Swanson ’10 was recently hired as the media relations specialist for DartmouthHitchcock Health.

Before working in public relations, Cassidy was a journalist for eight years, working for organizations including WMUR-TV and the New Hampshire Union Leader. She lives in Concord, NH, with her fiancé, Eric Smith.

Katie Closs ’13 has been teaching for more than seven years. She currently works as a History Teacher in the Epping School District in Epping, NH. She was recently given the opportunity to take courses to become a certified Principal in the State of New Hampshire and shares her excitement about this potential opportunity for growth.

Stephanie Gagne ’13 has been working as a Registered Nurse for more than five years.

She is currently employed by Memorial Hospital, a small, critical-access hospital located in North Conway, NH. Stephanie wrote, “I am so incredibly grateful to Rivier for preparing me for success in the ‘real world’.”

Mary (Donovan) Harrigan ’15 was recently promoted to Site Co-Director for the Early Learning Center of Milford, located in Milford, NH. She has been teaching for more than five years and shares that she loves her career.

Melissa (Arcari-Wood) Ward ’10 is a Registered Behavior Technician based in Fort Riley, KS. She and her husband John married in 2015 and have two sons, Emmett and Weston. Melissa shares, “My main focus right now is staying home with my two littles and raising kind humans!”

Kayla Davis ’17 is the Board of Health Agent for the town of Mattapoisett, MA. Her position covers an expansive list of responsibilities— everything from trash and recycling collection to inspecting restaurants and residences.

Kayla shares, “Rivier taught me how to become an assertive public health employee!”

Shawn Dumas ’19G is currently a School and College Counselor at Central Catholic High School in Lawrence, MA. He is also the Assistant Boys Cross Country Coach and was named the Head Coach for Girls Indoor/Outdoor Track & Field.

Kyle Flanagan ’19 accepted a position as a TrackMan Operator for the Cincinnati Reds in Chattanooga, Tennessee. “I couldn’t be more grateful to have been given this incredible opportunity. It becomes a surreal moment when you realize you are able to go out and chase your dreams,” Kyle shares. “I’m eager to get started and am excited for the long road ahead!”

Taylor King ’19 is a Residential Rehabilitation Educator for Aspire Health Alliance, located in Norwell, MA. She currently works in a group-home setting for adults with mental health issues, where she helps them live as independent of a life as possible. She is pictured here on the day she graduated from Rivier.

Mahesh Pathipati ’19G works in the Office of Information Technology at Rivier University as a Business Intelligence Analyst. While working towards his master’s degree, he participated in the work-study program. In this position, Mahesh was able to gain experience and knowledge that continues to help him serve the community at Rivier.

Celebrating the Class of 2020!

While this year’s Commencement ceremony looked different than any other, the spirit of Rivier was strong as we honored our 2020 graduates at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium in August.
